From Fr. Dan, Pastor

Dear Friends,

For all those with Covid 19, and family and friends, I promise my prayers and heartfelt compassion. May the sick be healed, those who have died share in Jesus’ resurrection, and all richly experience the tender consolation of Jesus and the warmth that comes from the Blessed Mother.

Fr. Kevin’s transfer is a loss for us and a gain for BU. I am personally saddened to lose Kevin, and I also understand that one so talented is needed as a “Director/Pastor.” Please see the longer bulletin item for more details.

Jesus, meek and humble of heart, clothe us with compassion, kindness and humility, make us want to be patient with everyone. Teach us to be true neighbors to all in trouble and distress, and so imitate you, the Good Samaritan.”

Being with you online for Mass and other things has been great. At the same time, I miss you and so look forward to the time when it is safe to resume public Masses.

Please join your neighbors and friends in celebrating the liturgies of Holy Week online or on TV. Please see the information on specifics in this bulletin and on our website. Holy Week is awesome, and the realities celebrated are breathtaking: Jesus really present in the Eucharist, Jesus’ saving death, and Jesus’ glorious resurrection.

Please share with friends how to attend Easter Mass “virtually” at Sacred Heart and Our Lady’s. Our cherished brothers and sisters who are infrequently at church are good people who love Easter Mass. Your telling them how to make the internet or TV connection could well be the difference that makes it happen. Please consider sending an email or text or making a call to them.

1000 people are reading or watching the video and written emails being sent out five times or more a week from our two parishes. How to sign up is in the bulletin and on the website. Please spread the word.

Thank you for the get-well cards! You are so kind. March 6 was a day of joy for me -- getting back here with you after the brain aneurysm repair. I am grateful to God and to you!

Making connections while physically apart. Stories of your reaching out to others are heart-warming.

Sports: When will the leagues resume? I hope it is based on medical facts and they err on the side of health. My guesses: NBA & NHL: next fall. Baseball: July 4, but just televised, and no fans in the stadium until August. NFL: The season starts on time, but with very little time in training camp, and little or no preseason games.

Love & Prayers. Be Safe! —Fr. Dan

Current Information All daily and Sunday Masses and religious services are suspended until further notice. In announcing this, Cardi-nal Sean also has issued a dispensation from the obligation to attend Sunday Mass.

Funeral liturgies are suspended, with the exception of graveside committal services that allow for proper distance. Other liturgical celebrations (like baptisms and weddings) may proceed but only with immediate family.

The Sacrament of Confession offered on Wednesdays and Saturdays is suspended. Our churches are currently closed to the public, following the governor’s stay-at-home advi-sory announced on March 23. If anything changes, we will let you know. Check www.sholnewton.org/covid-19 for the latest.

The parish offices are closed as of March 17, but the staff is available to you by phone and email.

Holy Week Information Please see the box on the opposite page for information about Holy Week services.

Outreach to the Most Vulnerable Many people have acted with great generosity of spirit in asking how we can care for our neighbors most in need during this time. If you are interested in learning more about how you can support someone, whether by a daily or

weekly phone call or by making home deliveries of essen-tial items, OR if you need help, please contact Kate at [email protected] or 617-527-7560 ext.219.

Resources for Faith at Home Sunday Mass from our collaborative: https://www.youtube.

A Note on Fr. Kevin’s Assignment

Friends,

I regret to share with you that we have a big loss for us, and a huge gain for the Boston University Catholic Center. To quote from the official announcement from the Office of Clergy Per-sonnel: “Cardinal Sean has appointed Fr. Kevin Staley-Joyce as Director of the Catholic Center and as Priest-Campus Minister at Boston University in Boston. The effective date of this action will be June 1, 2020.” As this new assignment is full-time, Fr. Kevin will no longer be assigned here as of the same date, June 1.

I have been delighted with Fr. Kevin in every way. His priestly ministry and his companionship in the rectory with myself and Fr. Dennis has been such a blessing. Fr. Kevin is brilliant, de-vout, hardworking, considerate, and so much more. One consola-tion for me is that I would rather have had an excellent parochial vicar like Fr. Kevin for a short time, than a mediocre one for a long time. When you have someone great, like Fr. Kevin, you cannot expect his talent will not be required sooner rather than later as a Pastor or, in this case, “Director.” We will plan suitable ways to say thank you and good-bye to Fr. Kevin. I am glad we still have him for two more months.

—Fr. Dan, Pastor

Dear friends and parishioners,

I want to convey my sincere gratitude to God and to you for the privilege of being a priest at Sacred Heart and Our Lady’s this past year! Being a priest is about conveying the faith, helping people to live the faith, and sanctifying them through the pres-ence of God in the sacraments. It’s been a delight to be able to do exactly this at our collaborative, and to get to know so many of you, all the while learning from your faith and dedication.

When I depart for BU, it will mark my one-year point here in Newton. A year is shorter than I expected, but I will of course look forward to remaining in contact with everyone. In the life of faith, and in bringing Christ to his people, there’s often a sense of trading one great thing for another, and that’s why this is a “both/and” moment. I’m deeply grateful to Fr. Dan, Fr. Dennis, the parishioners, volunteers, and staff here for their faith, leadership, and steadfastness. I’m also now privileged to serve the students at BU as they chart the course of their spiritual lives, and allow Christ to guide them during their pivotal years.

As ever, I will be in touch with everyone during the coming weeks and months on FlockNote, and I will remain here at the parish for a good while, continuing our shared Lenten fast from the ordinary course of spiritual life, but remaining hopeful that we will be at Mass together before too much longer!

With love and prayers, Fr. Kevin

Fr. John Sassani—Homily Given on April 17, 2011 Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion—Liturgical Year A

Homily reflections are also available each week online at www.sholnewton.org/godeeper. Photo Album will return in future bulletins. In the meantime, visit us on Instagram @sholnewton

St. Paul focused my attention in reading the Sacred Scriptures today and preparing a homily. Christ emptied himself, St. Paul wrote in his letter to Philemon. And we see it in the Gospel at his entrance into Jerusalem. He enters on an ass and its foal – two young beasts of burdens. He enters, not as a warrior, but as a poor man and as peacemaker. (The prophet Zechariah foretells this: “Behold: your king is coming to you, a just savior is he; Humble, and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey…The warrior’s bow will be banished, and he will proclaim peace to the nations.” – Zechariah 9:9, 10)

We hear it in the recounting of the Last Supper: he emptied himself to draw them into his very life. Despite this, the Twelve Apostles are all over the place – they are not focused and not with Christ.

In the garden, Christ’s will would be for God to let this cup – the Passion he is about to undergo – pass from him. But, he emptied himself and said to his Father, “Not as I will, but as you will.”

Christ was betrayed with a kiss from Judas – it’s difficult to imagine the insult and pain of this. Yet, there is no chiding, only do what you’ve come to do.

Under oath in front of the high priest, Jesus tells them who he is. They question, “Are you? You have said so.” And there is no drama in his reply.

Then the violence, the humiliation. He suffers it all – he empties himself of any temptation to strike back. Even in death, the chief priests and the Pharisees want to seal the tomb, to post a guard so that Christ’s disciples cannot deceive others – another insult.

In all these moments of Christ’s Passion, the plan of the Father is accomplished and assured by Christ’s self-emptying.

Each of us is made like Christ in Baptism. He makes the choices he makes for self-emptying love for us, and he desires to make us people of Christlike love in his image.

May our celebration today assist us to live, day by day, that same love which we witness in this liturgy.

Take, Lord, and receive all my liberty,

my memory, my understanding, and my entire will,

all I have and call my own. You have given all to me. To you, Lord, I return it.

Everything is yours; do with it what you will.

Give me only your love and your grace; that is enough for me.

-The Suscipe of St. Ignatius Loyola

This prayer, which is found in St. Ignatius’ Spiritual Exercises, was deeply meaningful to Fr. John. He led people through the Spiritual Exercises many times during his priestly ministry, and the words of the prayer became even more poignant in his illness.

As April 21 approaches, the Pastoral Staff invites you to partici-pate in several opportunities to honor Fr. John’s memory and to celebrate his legacy on the first anniversary of his passing to eter-nal life.

First, we will be sharing online a special Mass of remem-brance for Fr. John on Sunday, April 19, recorded at Our Lady’s. Our planned reception following Mass will be post-poned to a later date when it is safe to gather together.

We also now announce plans for several projects to create perma-nent memorials to Fr. John at each parish.

At Sacred Heart, we will be adding Fr. John’s portrait to the pas-tors’ wall in the parish office, and we are planning for an installa-tion of the Suscipe prayer in the Grotto behind the convent.

At Our Lady’s, we will be installing a new marble slab in the Lower Hall with Fr. John’s name and dates of pastorship, adding to the existing memorial there. We are also planning to refurbish the Reconciliation Chapel in Fr. John’s memory, in order to make it a more prayerful space; it will include the Suscipe prayer.

We are seeking your financial support to make these memorial plans a reality. If you would like to contribute, please make checks payable to either “Sacred Heart” or “Our Lady’s” with “Fr. John” written in the memo line. All contributions are tax-deductible. Any funds donated in excess of the projects’ costs will be earmarked for the continued beautification and upkeep of these two parishes that Fr. John loved so deeply and served so faithfully.

We are grateful for your ongoing love for Fr. John and we thank you in advance for your generosity towards these projects. If you have any questions, please contact Kristina at kpreman@ sholnewton.org or 617-527-7560 ext.216.

Care for Creation: Abstaining from Meat Is Good for the Planet, too!

Now that you've changed your light bulbs, why not consider changing your lunch? Make combating climate change a Lenten practice by reducing or eliminating your meat consumption for Lent! Meat and dairy, particularly from cows, have an outsize impact on carbon emissions, with livestock accounting for around 14.5% of the world’s greenhouse gases each year. That’s roughly the same amount as the emissions from all the cars, trucks, airplanes, and ships combined in the world today! Perhaps, besides Fridays, we could add more days of abstaining from meat to our personal Lenten practice as a way to love God, ourselves, our neighbors, and our Earth.

Care for Creation: Opt Up to 100% Renewable Electricity

If you haven’t already opted up to 100% renewable power with Newton Power Choice, now is a good time to do so. If you’re using your electric devices at home more than usual, then you’re using more electricity than you normally would. By opting up to 100%, you will be promoting local solar and wind power. Please join over 1,900 Newton residents by signing up now at: https://masspowerchoice.com/newton/opt-up2 or call 1-833-272-9592.

Our Lady’s News

Update about Easter Dinners Many of you know that we typically offer outreach in the form of groceries for dinner to local families in need at the holidays (Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter). Due to the coronavirus outbreak and the impossibility of guaranteeing safety for the dozens of donors, recipients, and volunteers involved in this project, we are not able to offer our Easter outreach this year. Instead, we are reaching out to families who would usually receive groceries and offering non-perishables instead. If you would like to volunteer for this outreach, please contact Kate at [email protected]. Thank you!

This Lent, Give Hope to Honduras! One of the ways we support our sister parish in Honduras is with our Lenten campaign to support their parish scholarship program. Since 2011, we’ve supported the parishioners in San Marcos in lifting up the poorest young children and teen-agers there, so their families can afford necessities for school like shoes, books and supplies, transportation, and even food. Each week during Lent in the bulletin, we will share a few of the students’ letters, written to thank you:

Hello dear sponsors. It is a pleasure to greet you and at the same time wish you a blessed day, and that in the time of the birth of the child Jesus you can share with your family and close ones. Another purpose of these sincere words is to ex-press my gratitude you for the opportunity you give me by being a beneficiary of a scholarship. I am very happy because through this help I can achieve my dreams. I want to tell you that I moved to 7th grade that that I have liked to partici-pate in the activities of the school and the church.

I am so happy that there are people in the world as good as you, who are interested in boys and girls like me and many others. It is a very beautiful act through which you reflect the love of God, reaching the people that most need it. I wish you a happy Christmas and prosperous new year. I will pray to God to bless your lives always. Thank you. See you soon.

Currently Suspended Every Saturday, 2:30-3:30pm, at both churches on the lower level, or by ap-pointment.

New to our Collaborative? Welcome! Please introduce yourself after Mass or at the parish offices. We want to know and serve you! We hope you will participate in our parishes with your prayers, presence, talents, and stewardship accord-ing to your means.

Pastoral Care of the Sick: We are most eager to help any-one who cannot celebrate Mass with us in church. If you or a loved one wishes to receive the Sacraments of the Anointing of the Sick, Eucharist, or Reconciliation, please call the par-ish offices. The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is celebrated after all parish Masses on the first full weekend of each month. Please also notify us of hospitalizations, so that we may be of help.

Sacraments of Initiation: For adults interested in Baptism, Confirmation, or joining the Catholic Church, please contact Nick Frega; for high school Confirmation, contact Michelle

Solomon at Sacred Heart or Kristina Preman at Our Lady's; for older children to be baptized or to receive Holy Commun-ion, contact Michelle Solomon at Sacred Heart or Rosemary Seibold at Our Lady's.

Infant Baptisms: Infant Baptisms are celebrated at Mass or on special Sundays throughout the year. Parents are asked to call the parish office to begin the process. A program of prep-aration is offered to all parents. For more information, please visit our website.

Sacrament of Marriage: Please contact the parish offices at least 6 months in advance. A preparation program is offered to all couples. For more information, please visit our website.

Saint Vincent de Paul Society: For more information, email [email protected] or call 617-527-7560 x255(OL) or 617-969-2248 (SH).

During this period of separation from the normal course of sacramental life, we continue to pray for the inten-tions of our community of faith, and the priests of the collaborative continue to offer daily (private) Masses for the intentions listed here.

Prayer to Our Lady of Guadalupe, from US Conference of Catholic Bishops

Holy Virgin of Guadalupe, Queen of the Angels and Mother of the Americas. We fly to you today as your beloved children. We ask you to intercede for us with your Son, as you did at the wedding in Cana.

Pray for us, loving Mother, and gain for our nation and world, and for all our families and loved ones, the protection of your holy angels, that we may be spared the worst of this illness.

For those already afflicted, we ask you to obtain the grace of healing and deliverance. Hear the cries of those who are vulnerable and fearful, wipe away their tears and help them to trust.

In this time of trial and testing, teach all of us in the Church to love one another and to be patient and kind. Help us to bring the peace of Jesus to our land and to our hearts.

We come to you with confidence, knowing that you truly are our compassionate mother, health of the sick and cause of our joy.

Shelter us under the mantle of your protection, keep us in the embrace of your arms, help us always to know the love of your Son, Jesus. Amen.
