South Africa’s Minister of Tourism, The Honourable Marthinus van Schalkwyk

WELCOME.

South Africa’s status as a premier global leisure destination is now firmly established.

We have the capability and the means, the welcoming culture, and the varied, textured,

beautiful destination that the world’s travellers – ever more demanding and discerning –

want when they choose a destination. During the last five years, South Africa has outpaced

the growth of all competitor locations in the leisure arrivals category. Foreign direct spend

in rand terms has grown faster than arrivals, with an 11% per-annum growth rate. South

Africa’s tourism industry has also managed to build on the momentum achieved during a

record-breaking 2010 by growing a further 3,3% and attracting over 8,3 million international

tourists in 2011.

Tourism is poised to play a greater role than ever before, both on the global stage and in

the lives of South Africans. However, tourism is about much more than the policies, statistics

and objectives that often talked about. It is about people. Being a labour-intensive sector

with a supply chain that cascades deep into the national economy and across all communi-

ties, tourism is positioned as a priority sector in Government’s planning and policy frame-

works. In South Africa, as in the rest of the world, tourism remains one of the fastest-growing

economic sectors, with huge potential for future job creation and social inclusion, in particu-

lar with regard to women and young people.

Our country as a whole embodies a very distinct fabric of interwoven cultures and the

world’s eyes have opened up to the beauty, diversity of experiences, and endless possibilities

that South Africa has to offer like never before. The surge of visitors and sustained growth in

tourism to South Africa since the World Cup is a testament to this and we continue to invest

heavily in creating intrigue for our country’s broad spectrum of lifestyle experiences. We are

indeed ‘a world in one country’, from our awe-inspiring environment through to the warmth

and friendliness of our people.

Welcome to South Africa — one of the world’s great golfing destinations

IN THE international golfing world, South Africa’s reputation is sky-high. The Majors Tournament

exploits of the likes of Retief Goosen, Charl Schwartzel, Louis Oosthuizen, Trevor Immelman and

the ever-green Ernie Els have ensured South African golf's extremely lofty global reputation is

well-deserved and secure.

But while the exploits of our golfers at famous courses such as Augusta, Wentworth and St

Andrew s have given our country’s standing a huge boost, it has also enhanced South Africa’s

status as a golfing destination par excellence.

For golfing enthusiasts, South Africa offers the chance to play a round of golf alongside the

ocean and watch the whales play in the waves as your golfing buddies tee off or to putt for a

birdie in the middle of the pristine South African bush, as wild antelope graze close by or the cry

of the fish eagle pierces the big, blue sky. For all golfers, South Africa offers a break from your

business schedules at one of our over 400 unforgettable, unique golf courses — many featuring

on the world golfing circuit.

This country offers every visitor — and certainly every golf lover — the opportunity to fulfill

their dreams. Ours is the ultimate sporting destination, be it playing on our world-renowned golf

courses, the thrill of the extreme: bunji-jumping, paragliding, surfing, caving or being challenged

by our off-road trails.

But our country offers so much more than sport. It offers the chance to reach for the stars and

to feel the universe embrace you under the brilliant clarity of the southern night sky or a chance

to treat yourself to our variety of fine dining venues. Hospitality meets you at every turn. From

the super luxurious hotels, lodges and resorts to intimate and cultural accommodation establish-

ments, we offer you an infinite choice of overnight options.

Our cosmopolitan cities, country towns and villages will amaze you. The cultural rainbow of

our nation brings many lifestyles, traditions, and languages for you to interact with.

Are you interested in safari and wildlife? Yes, take your pick. There are private lodges and

reserves, national parks and wilderness regions to suit every pocket.

Our selection and choice of wines suit every palette. There’s a red, white, rosé and sparkling

wine to pair with the culinary delights of every description.

Be revitalized at our spas, wellness centres and retreats, that will refresh and restore your

mind and body.

We open our doors to you. Share the beauty of our country. Experience the African hospitality

— let ‘ubuntu’ and warmth of our people make you feel at home.

The City of Tshwane to host the Tshwane Open

TSHWANE IS A COSMOPOLITAN city with a rich heritage and cultural diversity. It is also the

diplomatic capital of South Africa. Owing to its location, heritage and economic activity, it

attracts travellers of all kinds — business, leisure, health and sport.

The Tshwane of today is one of the most sophisticated and promising emerging markets

globally. The unique combination of a highly developed economic infrastructure and huge

emergent market economy has given rise to a strong entrepreneurial and dynamic invest-

ment environment.

This magnificent destination is not only about business, but also offers an array of experi-

ences ranging from diversity of cultures, heritage, entertainment, wildlife, outdoor experi-

ences and good weather all year round. Sport, arts and culture, research and development,

industry, learning and the business of running the nation are all captured in the daily lives

of the city’s 2.5 million residents who make this city what it is. Tshwane is also the home to

more than seventeen magnificent golf courses.

The City of Tshwane is proud to associate itself with the Sunshine Tour which will host a

PGA tournament known as the Tshwane Open, being held at one of Tshwane’s most magni-

ficent golf courses, the Copperfield Golf Estate. The Sunshine Tour represents the highest

level of competition for male professional golfers in Southern Africa. The Tshwane Open is

a 72-hole full-field event co-sanctioned by the European Tour and the Sunshine Tour and is

one of six founding professional golf tours that make up the International Federation of PGA

Tours. It will be the sixth and last co-sanctioned event on the Sunshine Tour during summer

2012/13.

I am inviting you to come and experience the splendour of the City of Tshwane and

experi ence the inauguration of the Tshwane Open, a PGA-Sanctioned tournament from

28 February to 03 March 2013 at the Ernie Els Copperleaf in Centurion — Tshwane.

We welcome you to the City of Ekurhuleni – the Place of Peace, Aerotropolis and gateway to Africa and the world.

HOSTING THE 102nd edition of the SA Open Golf Championship, the second oldest golf

tourna ment after the British Open, some of the best professional golfers in the world, will

enjoy the golf, the offerings and investment opportunities Ekurhuleni has to offer. The event

will once again be taking place at the majestic Serengeti Golf Estate in Kempton Park.

This gigantic tournament provides exposure for our City to approximately 300 million

homes in forty-one countries. Ekurhuleni is a preferred destination for national and inter-

national sporting and cultural events and investment. This is in line with our Growth and

Development Strategy 2055 which is informed by the Gauteng Global City Region plans.

The hosting of the SA Open also speaks to our triangular vision for sport, with mass partici-

pation at the base and elite championship sport at the apex. The SA Open sits at the apex of

this triangle, as one of the world’s most prestigious tournament for professional golfers.

The Richer Future Foundation, is the charity arm of the SA Open, currently working with

previously disadvantaged golf clubs from Ekurhuleni, namely the Tembisa and Daveyton Golf

Clubs, supporting them in various self-development initiatives. Last year the South African

Golf Development Board (SAGDB) invited participation in the Kids Golf Development pro-

gramme held at the Daveyton Golf Club. 93 children participated from Tembisa, Daveyton,

KwaThema and Tsakane. This year the city target aims to double this figure.

In conclusion, after having tested the Jack Nicklaus-designed course myself, I must say it

surely will continue to make an impression on the professionals as it has on the South African

golf landscape.

I wish all the golfers the best during the tournament and may Golf be the winner.

WE ARE particularly proud of our immense natural beauty — from the shores of False Bay, to the wine lands of the Stellenbosch district, and everything in between. The FIFA World Cup provided us with a valuable boost to start revamping our public transport service, and already more than 4 million passenger journeys have been reported on our MyCiTi bus network. These buses already connect the airport and the city centre with the Table View area along our West Coast. Future phases will include connecting routes to our beaches and sea-side play zones. Your oversized luggage, such as surf-boards and golf bags, is more than welcome on board. Eventually, this safe and effective network will cover the entire Cape Peninsula. Ahead of 2014 — the year in which Cape Town will

officially hold the title as World Design Capital — we have embarked on a number of creative design initia-tives. One immediate visible result was the relocation of the golf course on the Green Point Common, which now forms part of the Cape Town Stadium precinct. We have also invite d student s from the University of Cape Town to assis t us with ideas on how to finish the unfinished freeway, which you will see in the City Centre. Cape Town is a vibrant, cosmopolitan city with a crea-tive ability that ranks among the best in the world. The City offers everything the business or leisure traveller might require — from top-class accommodation, to safe and reliable transit. It’s not “all work and no play” either; there is more than enough to entertain you. We hope you enjoy your stay in the Mother City. We are happy to welcome you to our shores.

ENTERPRISE ILEMBE, KWAZULU-NATAL NORTH COAST

THE iLembe Region with its unique mix of luxury resorts and wide variety of affordable accommodation, has long been recognized as a prime domestic and international holiday destination. Patches of coastal forest give way to rolling green hills of sugar cane, which, in turn, spill into the rich hinterland of the province. Its ever-present sea views and magnifi cent beaches are what this holiday des-tination is all about and its warm-all-year-round weather means you can swim, sunbathe, surf and fish from early spring right through to winter’s end. The North Coast boasts a rich cultural heritage with strong Eastern, African, European and French Mauritian influences, a unique cultural mix, which provides fascinat-ing insights into the history of this part of the world.

INVESTMENT, EMPLOYMENT AND PRODUCTIONGlittering natural assets abound. Local and global inves-tors have invested some R2 billion in tourism projects in the past two years. Developers have recognized the value of its unspoilt natural environment and have adopted an approach that puts residents and guests directly in touch with the region’s natural beauty.

VINEYARDS The iLembe Vineyards Project is an agro processing busi-

ness with an Agri Tourism component. It takes three years for vineyards to be planted before they can be harvested. The ultimate goal of the project is to capitalize on the catalytic effect of a vineyard, and the ability to create econo mically viable projects and industries supporting and surrounding the vineyards. The objective of the project is to plant and harvest vines with the intention of producing some or all of the following i.e. wine, brandy, juice and the production of table grapes. Villard Blanc has been identified as a grape cultivar that is ideal for the coastline of KwaZulu-Natal as it is resistant to humidity.

26

The iLembe Region was named to honour King Shaka’s Zulu

Kingdom along KwaZulu-Natal’s North Coast, extending 110 km

from Umhlanga Rocks just north of Durba n, up to Amatikulu River.

The Sunshine Tour is one of six founding professional golf tours that

makes up the International Federation of PGA Tours.

BASED IN South Africa, with several tournaments in neighbouring African states, the Sunshine

Tour stages professional tournaments throughout the year. It’s flagship events include the

venerable SA Open Championship, the Telkom PGA Championship and SA Masters, while it now

has six tournaments that are co-sanctioned with the PGA European Tour.

The Sunshine Tour has been the starting point for many professionals who have gone on to

dominate the world professional golf and, since World War II, only the USA has produced more

Major victories than South Africa. Lead by such icons of the game as Gary Player, Ernie Els and

Retief Goosen, the Sunshine Tour continues to produce world-beating professionals with the

likes of Charl Schwartzel, Louis Oosthuizen and Branden Grace the latest to break through on

the world stage.

Divided into a summer and winter "swing", the Sunshine Tour stages tournaments year-

round, with the bigger prize-money events taking place in the summer months from October

through March. During the winter months, smaller three-round events with an emphasis on

Pro-Am participation take place, with many smaller centres around South Africa being visited.

From 2012, these three-round events have been awarded Official World Ranking points, giving

South African “stay-at-home” professionals opportunities to improve their world standing and

contributing towards being able to qualify for Majors and World Golf Championship events.

From late 2013 for a period of at least five years, the Sunshine Tour will host the Tourna

ment of Hope, which will involve the top 50 players on the Official World Golf Ranking as well

as the top finishers on the Orders of Merit from member Tours of the International Federation

of PGA Tours. This limited-field event will coincide with World Aids Day and will have as its

focus the highlighting of HIV/Aids and poverty within Africa. The venue of the Tournament of

Hope is still to be decided.

For visitors to South Africa, professional golf tournaments are easily accessed and boast a

standard of play every bit as good as any of the major Tours around the world.

Visit www.sunshinetour.com for a full year-round schedule.

THE NEDBANK GOLF CHALLENGE, or South Africa’s Major, has a long and illustrious history of providing a stage for the world’s best golfers to enthral the South African golf loving public. The tournament dates back to 1981 when the Sun City challenge was staged at the Gary Player designed course and Nedbank has been involved since inception, sponsoring the 14th hole.

Over three decades the tournament has grown in stature, and what began as an ‘exhibition’ of golf, soon grew into a fully-fledged tournament complete with official world ranking points. The tournament has unquestionably become the greatest showcase of golf on the African continent. Nedbank’s investment and sponsorship grew steadily culminating in the bank taking on the title sponsor-ship in 1996. In 1987 the event was played on a “winner takes all” basis. The prize fund of $1 Million led to the event being named the Million Dollar Golf Challenge. This approach was intended to attract the world’s top golfers to compete in South Africa during the apartheid era. In 1988 the winner’s prize was again $1 million, but additional prizes were introduced. From 2000 to 2002 the first prize was increased to $2 million, but the follow-ing year the winner’s share of the total prize fund was reduced to around 30% of the total prize money. In 2006 the winner received $1.2 million out of a total purse of $4.385 million. The live television broadcast goes out to approximately 200 countries, raising Nedbank’s profile while at the same time marketing South Africa as a tourist destination and drawing attention to Sun City. Over a number of years the profile of the NGC has created a platform for other sponsors to leverage off and created thousands of employment opportu-

nities for the community living in and around the Sun City resort. Additional community building opportunities that have arisen as an indirect benefit of the NGC are:

❏ The annual Sports Trust Challenge is presented by Nedbank and Sun Interna-tional, founding trustees of The Sports Trust, the event is held the day after the NGC and raises over R1 millio n for sport development. Nedbank and the bank’s Sport Affinity clients have over the last ten years helped raise over R15 million for worthy initiatives.

❏ As far back as 2005 Sun International and Ned-bank joined forces to assist adopted families living in poverty. To date, Sun City has built nine houses for adopted families and with Nedbank’s assistance a further five houses were built.

Nedbank remains committed to raising the profile of golf domestically, while at the same time giving deserving underprivileged golfers the opportunity

to make things happen. This includes a significant investment in the Nedbank SA Disabled Golf Open. Nedbank is the official banking partner to the Sunshine Tour; and the Nedbank Affinity Cup Pro-Am, a South African PGA Tour event.

As sponsors we appreciate the fact that the suc-cess of the event depends on the ongoing support of our valued Nedbank clients and the general public. When you’ve been involved in a sponsorship for 32 years, and your brand promise is to Make Things Happen, the pressure to deliver is certainly on and we relish the challenge to make the 2012 Nedbank Golf Challenge the best ever.

ST FRANCIS LINKS, a very “mature” destination at the young age of six, reflects the perfect design balance betwee n man and Nature. The man behind the architec-ture of the course was Jack Nicklaus. He made a number of trips to the dunes above St Francis Bay to ensure the balance was in fact, perfect with the other architect, Mother Nature! In six years, St Francis Links has achieved success with accolades and financial stability. After being named Best New Course in 2007, St Francis Links has moved on to Top-10 status — attracting discerning golfers from all over the world. In addition to the golfing awards, St Francis Links staff has earned their acclaim for providing uncom-promising and anticipating service. The 5-star Experience Award has been achieved every year since opening. As CEO and PGA Master Professional, Jeff Clause states, “We are here to improve your quality time – be it for busi-ness or pleasure, the time you spend at St Francis Links

must surpass your expectations at every turn. Our goal is to anti cipate your needs (and wants) and be flexible to those changes needs (and wants)”. St Francis Links will also provide comfortable accom-mo da tion with the 4-star St Francis Golf Lodge featur ing 10 rooms on the 1st tee and another 50 rooms in beauti-fully appoint ed homes on the estate. Last year, the developers added a R4m Leisur e Centre complete with a fully equipped gym nasium and heated 20m x 6,3m heated pool with retractable roof. In addition to the Leisure Centre, hiking and cycling trails encourage trips into the natural beauty found in the 450 hectres making up the estate. FROM RUGGED to Royal — South Africa's First Golf Club.Visitors are most welcome and we encourage you to come and enjoy our magnificent course, quality facilities and our friendly hospitality. Royal Cape is without doubt one of the best and most challenging courses to play both in the Western Cape and the country. It is a course of championship stature, first played in 1906. As observers and custodians of the traditions of the wonderful game, this Royal club, has a keen eye on the future. We accept and embrace the changing of the times and we strive to maintain an enjoyable balance of tradition al values and the modern lifestyle. The South African Open has been hosted ten times, the first in 1910. In 1996 Ernie Els birdied the last three holes to win by one shot. Gary Player won in 1965 when he became the first player to break 70 in all four rounds, a record. The clubhouse retains its old style charm and tradition-

al design, modernized many times since 1923. The course is on flat terrain. Playing at Royal Cape is subject to three of nature’s beguiling offerings: a near constant wind to challenge, sweeping mountain views to charm you and water features to ensnare you, playing to a championship par 72. Tree lined with narrow fairways and subtle USGA spec built greens, Royal presents a traditional test of golf, althou gh the numerous ponds and lakes teeming with bird life provide beauty and distraction along the way. Facing the course are the lounge, Centenary room and members bar as well as the gallery corridor with its many framed photographs, paintings and memorabilia celebrat-ing the Club’s long history. Apart from providing rest and refreshment for golfers, the clubhouse is also frequently called upon for functions ranging from formal dinners to large parties and other events.

SINCE ITS opening in 1922 Durban Country Club’s par-72, 6157 metre course has been considered one of South Africa’s finest. The original design by Laurie Waters and George Waterman continues to compare with the best nearly 90 years later. As a result the Club boasts the unique claim of being the only course on the African continent to be rated in the Top 100 Golf Courses of the World by Golf Magazine (USA). Durban Country Club is a championship course and it’s not surprising that this excellent layout has been chosen to host the South African Open a total of 17 times as well as the Volvo Golf Champions in January 2013. A combination of lush vegetation, sand dunes and stunning views of the Indian Ocean make this course both scenic and challenging. The design includes a pleasant mix of tall trees, thick bush, severe slopes and punish-ing bunkers, thus providing even the most discerning golfer with a demanding round of golf. It is a shot maker’s course and players are required to think their way around it. Durban Country Club provides the golfer with an opportunity to experience one of the finest and most unique golf courses in existence.

The 18-hole, 6582 m course is intricate-ly incorporated into a parkland setting with its undulating manicured terrain, entwined by the clever use of a major tributary of the Mukuvisi River. Bent grass greens conform to the highest international standards. Peter Matkovich designed water features, an integral part of the course where even professional golfers find them a challenge.

We welcome you to take a walk on the Wild side of SANParks, SA’s natural heritage.

NATIONAL PARKS has become the pride and joy of all South Africans and of the world, man-aging a system of parks representing the indigenous fauna, flora, landscapes and associated cultural heritage of the country. SANParks is the body responsible for managing South Africa’s national parks. Formed in 1926, today manages 20 parks, consisting of 3 700 000 ha (37 000 km²), about 3% of the total area of South Africa. The best known park is Kruger National Park, the oldest (proclaimed in 1898) – and the largest – The Kruger Park and Table Mountain National Park are two of South Africa’s most visited tourist attractions (20 July 2011 Wikipedia). Most of the national parks have over-night facilities, with unrivalled variety of accommo-dation in arid, coastal, mountain and bushveld habitats. We offer visitors an unparalleled diversity of opportunities including adventure tourism, game viewing, bush walks, canoeing, cultural and historic experiences throughout South Africa. Conference facilities are offered in many of the parks. From the beginnings: 1910 the game reserves and general wildlife preservation was placed under the Transvaal Administration. In 1912 Stevenson-Hamilton submitted the proposal to Sir Patrick Duncan for reserves between the Sabie and Olifants rivers, and between the Letaba and Shingwedzi rivers, to become a national park. On promulgation, 31 May 1926, President Kruger’s conservation ideal was realised, when the first board of South African National Parks was appointed. In 1955 the kudu was first used in the Park’s logo. Today the kudu is represented in all parks logos within the SANParks framework, and is supported by the government through the Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism. SANParks is the leading conservation authority in all national parks around this country. The focus in the first decade of democracy has been to make national parks more access-ible to tourists; ensure conservation; and, to contribute to social and economic development in rural areas.

Enjoy “natures best!”

World Heritage Sites belong to all humanity. UNESCO identifies sites of cultural and natural value. Preservation is determined by stringent selection criteria.

Eight scenic and cultural treasures have been declared South African World Heritage Sites:

1999, 2005: Cradle of Humankind (25º 55’ 45” S 27º 47’ 20” E) Sterkfontein, Kromdraai, has 950 hominid fossil specimens, evidence of human evolution over the last 3.5-million years and brings insight about the earliest ancestors of humankind.

1999: Robben Island (33º 48’ S 18º 22’ E), became infamous as a maximum-security prison for anti-apartheid activists including Nelson Mandela. It has become a universal symbol of freedom.

1999: The iSimangaliso Wetland Park (27º 50’ 20” S 32º 33’ E). St. Lucia estuary is one of the largest in Africa and includes the continent’s southernmost coral reefs, wide submarine canyons, sandy beaches, forested dunes and a mosaic of wetlands, grasslands, forests, lakes and savannah. Find nesting turtles on the beaches; migrating whales, dolphins and whale-sharks offshore; and breeding colonies of pelicans, storks, herons and terns.

2000: The uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park (S29 22 59.988 E29 32 26.016) is SA’s watershed. Through 4 000 years, the indige nous San, created the largest collection of African rock art. Diverse habitats protect endemic and threatened species, especially birds and plants.

2003: Mapungubwe (22º 11’ 33” S 29º 14’ 20” E), an ancient civilization near our northern borders, exposes almost untouched remains of their palace, entire settlement area, and two earlier capitals, dating between 1300 to 1220AD.

2004: The Cape Floral Region (34º 10’ S 18º 22’ 30” E) from the Cape Peninsula to the Eastern Cape, takes up 0.04% of the world’s land, contains 3% of the earth’s plant species; is home to nearly 20% of Africa’s flora, is home to 9 600 vascular plants species, with 70% ende-mic. The region has 11 000 marine animal species, 3 500 are endemic, and 560 vertebrate species, including 142 reptile species, of which 27 are endemic.

2005: Vredevort Dome (26º 51’ 36” S 27º 15’ 36” E) is an impact crater formed 2-billion years ago. A 10 km in diameter meteorite hit earth. The impact scar measures 380 km across and consists of three concentric circles of uplifted rock, only 180 km are visible.

2007: The Richtersveld Cultural and Botanical Desert Landscape (28º 36’ S 17º 12’ 14” E), is home to semi-nomadic Nama. “Wine is sunlight, held together by water.”

Galileo Galilei

The South Africa wine industry is proud of our position to maintaining our position as a world leader in eco-sustainability.

THE BIODIVERSITY AND WINE INITIATIVE (BWI), a partnership between wine producers

and the wine sector seeks to protect the highly threatened Cape Floral Kingdom from

further loss. Set aside for conservation are some 132 000 ha, significantly more than the

101 000 ha comprising our national vineyard.

More recently our sustainability focus extends to include social sustainability. We have

created the framework for the wine world’s first ethical seal. This aims to fast-track the

implementation of fair labour practices on our wine farms and in the cellars.

Our wines are showing ever-increasing finesse and complexity. Many estates attract

extremely positive critical attention to advance our standing as a national producer of

excellence across the pricing continuum. We have also broadened the scope of our offer-

ings to accommodate the demand for greater flavour sophistication at the entry level, with

lower-alcohol content, as well as increasing the range of sparkling wine products.

As current chairman of the Cape Winemakers Guild, I truly encompass our philoso-

phy of constantly trying to raise the standard of the South African Wine Industry. As a

dynamic team, we strive to ensure our wines stand out amongst the best in the world.

Our main goal is to extract the full potential from our unique South African terroir and to

set new world-class benchmarks for South African and indeed the world’s wine production

standard s.

It gives me great pleasure to be involved in the ever-growing and exceptional South

African Wine Industry. I believe that through continuously striving for perfection and

maintaining our philosophy of being a world-class contender, we are fast becoming one of

the great wine and tourist destinations in the world.

GROOT CONSTANTIA is one of the Cape’s oldest and most famous wine farms dating back to 1685, producing wine continuously since its inception. The Groot Constantia trademark is one of the oldest surviving trademarks in the world today serving as a testimony of continuous quality wine production over centuries. Therefore, wines and heritage remain at the heart of the Constantia Valley. The land was granted to Simon van der Stel, 891 morge n (about 763 hectares), situated behind Table Mountain, which he named “Constantia”. The farm had several owners of which two were female. The Cloete family put Groot Constantia on the map from 1778 to 1885. Constantia wine was coveted across the globe and those who were fortunate enough to taste it soon refused to settle for anything less. Members of the British Royal House, Napoleon Bonaparte, King Louis Philippe of France, Frederick (The Great) of Prussia, the Lord Seven-teen of the VOC, governors, admirals, captains, and many other dignitaries coveted the Constantia label. Considering that they been making wine for over 325

years from the very first vines planted in the Cape – in what can only be described as the perfect natural condi-tions and under the watchful eye of the winemakers – it becomes clear why our wines have become legendary and unique. The estate today, covers 170 hectares, of which 96 hectares is under vines. Over the last six years Groot Constantia has won 34 gold medals for a variety of its wines. Groot Constantia stands as a pinion of excellence for the South African wine industry and is an ideal example for the preservation of the cultural and historical heritage of the country. The farm has a wonderful array of things to do and see: visit the Manor House and Cloete Cellar dating back to 1791. Daily cellar tours and wine tasting as well as guided vineyard tours, two outstanding restau-rants (Simon’s and Jonkershuis), as well as an art gallery displaying the paintings of local artists. As one of Cape Town’s Big 6 tourist attractions, with over 300 000 estate visitors annually, they are part of the Hop-on-hop-off City Sightseeing bus route.

ERNIE ELS WINES

SINCE FOUNDING Ernie Els Wines more than a decade ago, the wine producer has grown and matured into a successful and multi-award winning enterprise with a magnificent portfolio of wines produced at the winery on the slopes of the Helderberg Mountain in Stellenbosch. Ernie himself is passionate about wine and is very in-volved in the tasting process. In partnership with experi-enced winemaker Louis Strydom their shared passion for premium wine is reflected in the quality of the product right across the price ranges. Since its launch in 1999, Ernie Els Wines has establish-ed a magnificent portfolio of South African red wines, offering quality wines for everyone at various different price-points. Ernie’s passion for these wines, combined with winemaker Louis Strydom’s considerable talents, has proved a winning combination. Ernie Els Wines has won plaudits and many prestigious awards around the world and the team continues to make a big impact on both the South African and international wine markets. Louis Strydom, one of the leading winemakers in the South African wine industry for more than 13 years, and

now the Chairman of the Cape Winemakers Guild, will play a key role. “I’m excited about this new opportunity,” commented Louis. “We are here to show the true poten-tial of the Ernie Els terroir and cellar ability, and to make Ernie Els Wines more accessible to a wider spectrum of consumer.” Louis has produced the only South African wine to be nominated four years consecutively as one of the Top 100 wines in the world. The year 2010 marked a significant and exciting period of expansion for Ernie Els Wines as it introduced additional and affordable red wines to its portfolio. This bold initiative gave Ernie Els Wines greater diversity and also extent to its products across a wider price range, at the same time introducing the brand to a larger audience worldwide. In July 2011, the range was further extended with the introduction of two white wines, which was an-other first for the company. So, an impressive total of six separate red wines, and two white wines are now housed under the Ernie Els Wines portfolio.

HAUTE CABRIÈRE is a wine farm steeped in history and local lore. Originally granted to a French Huguenot farmer, Pierre Jourdan, on the 22 December 1694, it has been part of the Franschhoek Wine Valley fabric for over 300 years. Being a pioneer is intrinsic to Haute Cabrière and throughout its development and evolution it has always remained true to this heritage. In 1982, with a pioneering legacy in mind, the vine-yards were replanted in the tradition of the Champagne. The wines and Cap Classiques that Haute Cabrière now creates are the result of the this pivotal decision made over 28 years ago: To focus only on the classic Chardon-nay and Pinot Noir cultivars. Brave unconventional deci-sions made then ensure that today Achim von Arnim, the famed proprietor and the Haute Cabrière team, continue to add to the farm’s spirit, by specialising in an enticing

range of champenoise – named after the original Haute Cabrière trailblazer and founder, Pierre Jourdan. Comprised of two farms, situated on opposite ends of the breathtaking Franschhoek Wine Valley, Haute Cabrière is something extraordinary. A rich history, a whim sical setting, a seductive approach to wine and a magnetic proprietor ensure that Haute Cabrière is a decadent affair for any visitor. Its celebrated restaurant, Haute Cabrière, enhances the experience. Here, dishes are expertly paired with each wine and méthode champenoise, showing off the ultimate marriage between food and wine. Then there’s the exclusive extravagance of theatrical wine tours and tasting sessions where guests are treated to, among other things, the famous French Cavalry Sabrage show orches-trated by the charming Achim and Takuan von Arnim.

The only constant is change …. — Isaac Asimov

ALTHOUGH THE core definition of spas, according to ISPA is the same: spas are places devoted

to overall well-being through a variety of professional services that encourage the renewal of

mind, body and spirit. We see tremendous change and diversity in the spa industry each year,

allowing it to be one of the most dynamic and growing sectors of the leisure industry.

Spa trends, as identified by Spa Finder each year, show the global movement in the spa

industry, allowing spas to address the changes, and spa-goers the opportunity of new spa

experiences. One key identifiable trend is spas have been trying to move away from the gene-

ric “could be anywhere”. Demonstrating uniqueness and authenticity, through immersion in

signature treatments, food, design and experiences indigenous to the spa’s unique place and

culture.

However, independent of the type of spa, consumer confidence is paramount. One of the

key function of the South African Spa Association is to create consumer confidence in the

spa industry, through accreditation of establishments, according international spa standards,

recognizing spa therapist qualifications, spa research and encouraging further education and

upliftment in the industry.

Why are these requirements important to the consumer? Spa experiences are an impor-

tant component in a person’s wellness regimes, as today’s lifestyle, stress levels and endless

performance requirements are undermining to one health. It is therefore important that the

spa experience is of a high quality and result focused, ensuring the client’s expectation are not

only met, but also exceeded.

Additionally the South African Spa Association provides a platform for consumers to voice

complaints and complements. Should an official complaint be logged with the South Afri

can Spa Association, a South African Spa Association Consultant will visit/liase with the spa

directly, to ascertain the nature of the complaint and determine the subsequent corrective

steps, so ensuring the spa visitor is always protected, when visiting a member spa.

The SA Spa Association provides the consumer with peace of mind when visiting a spa that

bears the South African Spa Association logo. A full list of member spas is available on the SA

Spa Association Website: www.saspaassociation.co.za

So, take a moment to rediscover spas, as we reconnect and redefine ourselves, embracing

AT THE Spa and Wellness Centre, exquisitely nestled in

the African bush, is a piece of paradise designed to uplift

your mind, body and soul. Complete with state of the art

gym, equipped with cardio and weight training facilities,

the centre energizes and uplifts in the healing presence

of nature.

While connecting with the call of the wild, indulge

in an array of specially designed spa treatments. These

include facial, body and beauty treatments.

The 20 spa suites, completed in November 2008, are

positioned away from the rest of the lodge. All rooms

have magnificent private views into the reserve. The

ebony and ivory colours and the use of frameless glass

panels in the bathroom as well as the three meter high

doors makes it possible to fully enjoy the magnificent

views from every corner of the room. The room includes

all other luxuries such as a mini-bar, coffee and tea mak-

ing facilities, hair dryer, mini-safe and even have a built-in

international plug that can accommodate most electric

power plug configurations.

The Kapama family room is situated together with the

Spa suites and includes three balconies and a separate

area with two beds for younger kids if guests want their

kids to be accommodated in one room. This room is in

excess of 70 m². Pamper yourself at the two royal suites,

bigger in every way, which have a separate lounge and

extended balcony with recliner couches. The en-suite

bathroom has a bath and a dual shower cubicle fac-

ing the bush. Embrace the essence of Africa, let your

heart beat to its rhythm, let your body enjoy Kapama’s

magical signature treatment: Marula Miracle Moments.

Experi ence this journey to total euphoria of four hours.

Wonderful treatments such as a Calabash Massage and

Rasul Treatment, to mention only two of the five magical

treatments, are combined to ensure that your journey is

perfectly completed.

Other unique treatments are available such as the

“Kapama Pinotage Bliss” and the “Marula Sensual Steam

Treatment” tailor-made to meet the needs of couples or

on your own.

Talented and experienced beauty technicians remain

up to date with global treatments whilst ensuring the

flow of African wisdom into the pampering experience.

Stepping from one invigorating treatment to the next,

a lap pool welcomes you to lie back and relax under a

breathtaking bushveld sky.

THE ADMINISTRATIVE capital of South Africa, Tshwane proudly hosts national government and houses the ministry and head. The Union Buildings seats our government and is the site of presiden-tial inaugurations. Tshwane hosts the largest number of embassies worldwide, after Washington DC. Many interna-tional organisations working in aid, education, health, research and development are based in Tshwane adding to the melting pot of cultures. Tshwane covers 6 368 km² of Gauteng's 19 055 km² and stretches almost 121km from east to west and 108km from north to south — the third-largest city in the world in terms of land area, after New York and Tokyo/Yokohama. The city offers a lively culture with a variety of mu-seums, monuments, historical buildings, art cen-tres and craft markets. The State Theatre offers a continuous programme of performances. The Botanical Gardens host open air performances.

Sport, arts and culture, research and development, industry, learning and the business of running the nation are all captured in the daily lives of the city's 2,5 million residents. Dinokeng Game Reserve is just 30 minutes north of Pretoria, malaria-free with the Big 5 experience. Tshwane is a shopper's haven. Townships are melt-ing pots of different cultures and cuisine. Tshwane is home to 17 incredible golf courses. The Tshwane Open at the Ernie Els Copperleaf in Centurion, is a PGA tournament, co-sanctioned by the European Tour and Sunshine Tour. The Sunshine Tour Summer Swing, includes ISPS Honda SA Match Play Championship at Zwartkop Country Club.
