Parishes in Collaboration Collection today On May 30-31, all people of the Diocese of Orange will have the

opportunity to donate to the Parishes in Collaboration Collection. This collection is for the purpose of assisting parishes in the Diocese of Or-ange that exhibit ongoing needs that cannot be paid for by their ordi-nary income and have urgent needs (such as repairs and maintenance).

All money donated is put into a restricted fund that will be admin-istered by a group consisting of laity and clergy of the diocese. Par-ishes with needs as stated above will apply for grants from this fund to be used for their specific needs. Most recently the committee has fo-cused the grants to safety issues.

Donations for this should be placed in one of the designated enve-lopes and put in the collection basket along with your Sunday donation.

THE TRINITY IS LOVE

Theologians throughout the Christian centuries have spilled much ink (and, on occasion, some blood) in describing and defining the mystery of the Holy Trinity. One of the earli-est, most poetic, and beautiful descriptions comes from St. Augustine in De Trinitas, wherein he describes the Trinity as One (the Father) who loves, One (the Son) who is loved, and One (the Spirit) who is love. And these three Ones are also one Three.

It might be wisest for us to leave the technical wranglings to the academic theologians, and focus on the fact that the three Persons of the Trinity are indeed persons; they are best known and understood in their love for each other and for us. We are made in the image of those loving persons, and our best rela-tionships are lived out in the context of love. Truly loving rela-tionships are inexhaustible mysteries to be lived in joy. If this is true of our human relationships, how much more so is it true of our relationship with the Trinity. And how much more does it call upon us to be joyful, loving witnesses of the holy mys-tery of the One-in-Three. This is the mystery to which we were called when we were chosen to be God's own, baptized with water in the name of the Holy Trinity. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

Treasures from our Tradition There are plenty of "treasures" in our tradition that if resur-

rected today would cause anxious moments for bishops! Many concern marriage. There was a time when the church "consecrated" both virgins dedicated to prayer and charity, and brides dedicated to husband and family. Virgins were blessed in the sanctuary of the church, and brides in the sanctuary of the home. The custom of blessing the bride in the marriage chamber was standard in England, Ireland, Spain, and France until the eleventh century.

If the groom (the groom's side planned the wedding) chose from the full menu of liturgy, there would be a blessing of the bridal room, solemn evening prayer on the eve and morning prayer on the day of the wedding, a blessing at the church door of the spouses, and then in the church for the wife alone during Mass, and Communion. After the feast, a priest would repre-sent the bride's father in presiding over the legal process by which the bride transferred from her father's clan to her hus-band's. Some enduring customs hearken back to these days when marriage was seen as a contract between men (the bride's father and the groom) and was not so much about living out one's baptismal call, and certainly not about the equality of the spouses in Christ. Young Adult Retreat St. Justin Martyr Catholic Church presents the annual

"Testify to Love" retreat for young adults, ages 18-39. This year’s theme is “Fix my Eyes on You”. Come hear young adults share their experiences and how they live their Faith in today’s society. We will discuss topics such as relationships, reconcilia-tion, prayer, God’s love, and community. The retreat will be in English, but we invite young adults from all communities to come together as one Catholic family. We will enjoy meals and music together, celebrate Mass, pray, play, and learn to develop a deeper relationship with God and others.

The retreat will begin on Friday, July, 10, at 8:00 p.m. at St. Andrew’s Abbey in Valyermo, CA, and conclude on Sunday after the 5:30 p.m. Mass at St. Justin’s. A message from Fr. Joe… Faith Formation Mission Statement

After many meetings to discuss the parish Catechetical Plan for our Faith Formation Pro-grams we have developed a mission statement. It was the intention of the Faith Forma-tion staff to keep it short so that everyone could remember what our mission statement is. Here it is:

Making All People Disciples of Jesus Christ

I would like to let you know why we came to this mission statement.

“Jesus Christ” is what we are all about. It is him that we receive in sacraments. It is he whom we glorify with our lives. It is he whom we proclaim to others in the way we live out his teachings.

To be a “Disciple” is to follow with all our mind, heart and body Jesus Christ. Not only what he taught in the Gospels, but to follow him who is alive today, to have a relationship with the risen Lord in our daily lives and growing in his love and faith with his gifts of the sacraments. Jesus Christ is not a historical figure alone, but he is alive and well today.

“All People” is to remember that Jesus Christ came for all people and so we are called to invite all people to join with us. It is about being hospitable and welcoming to everyone we encounter and helping them to feel at home in our midst.

“Making”, goes to the great commission that Jesus gives to his disciples at the end of the Gospel of Matthew; “Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” It is in the spirit of this commission that we have derived our mission statement.

Our next step in this process is to develop a logo. I invite anyone who is interested to make a logo for our parish Faith Formation Ministry. It should include the mission state-ment. It needs to include the names of St. Justin Martyr Church and Sacred Heart Mission. Please submit your ideas to me.

Reflexiones sobre la Palabra Creados para algo Mucho más grande

Deuteronomio 4:32-34, 39-40 Lo que Dios ha hecho con Israel es absoluta-mente único e inaudito. A ningún otro pueblo le ha hablado Dios desde el fuego, como lo hizo con Israel en el monte Horeb. La elección que el Señor ha hecho de la descendencia de Abraham hace que el pueblo sea un pueblo consagrado a Dios. Romanos 8:14-17 La persona abandonada a sus propias fuerzas no puede medirse con un enemigo tan poderoso como la ley del pecado. La derrota significa la muerte total, la ausencia de Dios; pero ahora contamos con un aliado formidable: el Espíritu Santo que nos está poniendo la victoria al alcan-ce de la mano. La batalla continúa, las fuerzas del pecado siguen amenazando con su capacidad destructiva, pero la situación ha cambiado. Todos los temas de predicación de Pablo se dan en este capítulo donde se presenta la visión de la fe cristiana como camino de fe y esperanza, contemplada como revelación del misterio de amor de Dios en el Padre, Hijo y Espíritu Santo. Mateo 28:16-20 La introducción narrativa sitúa el encuentro en la montaña, sitio que en Mateo tiene un claro sentido simbólico, como lugar especial de la revelación divina. En una montaña Jesús pronunció su discurso inaugural y otra montaña fue el escenario de la Transfiguración. Los discípulos se postran y en el antiguo Oriente postrarse delante de otro era un signo de absoluta sumisión, practicado únicamente ante los dioses y los reyes. Al postrarse de-lante del Señor resucitado, los discípulos reconocen que a Él se le debe el mismo honor que a Dios.

Nuestra cultura: El lenguaje de la comunidad hispana está lleno de reconoci-mientos de Dios: “si Dios quiere”, “primero Dios”, “que Dios lo bendiga”, “vaya con Dios”, “gracias a Dios”, etc.

Reflexiones para la homilía A menudo asociamos cumbres y lugares altos con lugares sagrados; para los

peruanos puede ser el pico Machu Pichu; para mexicanos o guatemaltecos, se puede tratar de pirámides. El mirar hacia arriba hace que la vista se aleje de otros diosecillos más pequeños y del mundo y vaya al encuentro de un Dios más alto, más transcendente. Hacerse ídolos es fácil y a veces casi inconsciente: consiste en concentrar la atención, el amor y el tiempo en algo que no es Dios ni lleva a Dios, como puede ser el dinero, una afición a un juego, el trabajo, el propio prestigio… y quedarse con la vista baja, mirando a lo que es, en realidad, el suelo. Esos dioses no duran; pasan tan rápido como se pusieron ante nuestros ojos; y, a la larga, no satisfacen. Nos hacen, en lugar de más grandes, mucho más pequeños y limitados. Nos encierran en nosotros mismos. Nos hacen confiar únicamente en nosotros mismos y, al final, si hay un fracaso, nos hunden en la frustración o en la depresión.

Nosotros estamos hechos para algo mucho más grande; como nos dice la primera lectura hoy, lo que ha hecho Dios con nosotros es enorme e inigualable. Existe un solo Dios al que merece la pena seguir y ése es el Dios que nos ama personalmente y nos llama, y nos concede toda fuerza y gracia. Lo demás es locura, porque sólo conduce a la tristeza.

Dios nos llama y nos elige por su inmenso amor. Es Él quien nos regala la fuerza para luchar en la vida, por difícil que sea. Es Él quien nos hace capaces de ver y reconocer el amor y levanta nuestra mirada y nuestro corazón hacia algo más grande. Es Él quien nos concede la enorme dignidad de poder llamarnos y recono-cernos como sus hijos.

Este reconocimiento y adoración del único Dios verdadero, como a los discípu-los, nos cambia totalmente la vida: Podemos ahora entregar amor a otros, sin que-darnos vacíos. Podemos crear un sistema de relaciones con nuestros familiares y con los demás en los que la atención, el servicio, la entrega y la generosidad sean la norma. Podemos crear familias, como dice el lema del Encuentro Internacional de Familias que tendrá lugar en septiembre de este mismo año, con la misión de amar; y eso nos dará una alegría mucho mayor que las pequeñas y mezquinas satisfaccio-nes que nos dan los diosecillos del poder o del dinero.

El Señor ha estado grande con nosotros y estamos alegres. Para la reflexión: ¿En algún momento he sentido que algún interés dominaba mi vida más que Dios? ¿Cuáles son mis valores e intereses principales?

Obispo insta al Congreso a aprobar reforma migratoria

El obispo Gerald Kicanas de Tucson, Arizona, testificó a nombre del Comité de Migración de la Conferencia de Obispos Católicos de Estados Unidos (USCCB), ante el Subcomité de lo Jurídico sobre Inmi-gración y Seguridad Fronteriza, el 11 de febrero, en oposición a tres proyectos de ley. En conjunto, los proyectos afectarían a niños inmi-grantes y refugiados; criminalizarían a indocumentados y a quienes les brinden ayuda de necesidades básicas, incluidos los trabajadores reli-giosos; y permitiría a los estados crear y hacer cumplir sus propias leyes de inmigración.

En su declaración ante el subcomité, el obispo Kicanas dijo que los tres proyectos de ley “llevarían a nuestra nación en la dirección equivocada”, y no arreglarían nuestro sistema de inmigración. En lugar de ello, instó al subcomité a aprobar legislación de reforma migratoria integral, que incluya un camino a la ciudadanía para los indocumenta-dos.

“Señor Presidente, creemos que estos proyectos de ley no arre-glan nuestro sistema de inmigración”, dijo el obispo Kicanas. “Más bien, lo harían menos justo y socavaría la autoridad moral de nuestra nación, tanto a nivel nacional como a nivel mundial”.

El Obispo Kicanas señaló las numerosas disposiciones de los tres proyectos de ley que afectarían a los niños inmigrantes y refugiados, incluyendo la derogación del programa Acción Diferida para la Llegada de Infantes (DACA), que afecta a 600 mil niños, y la derogación de las protecciones para los niños extranjeros no acompañados que huyen de la violencia en América Central, sometiéndolos a regresar a posibles peligros, sin el beneficio de una audiencia de inmigración.

“Nuestro país es juzgado por la forma en que tratamos a los más vulnerables y la eliminación de la protección de los niños —tanto del programa DACA como de aquéllos que buscan refugio— atenta contra la decencia humana y viola la dignidad humana. No debemos castigar a estos niños, que en sí son inocentes y sólo buscan oportunidades y seguridad”.
