When new corporate headquarters are designed for acompany in the beauty products business, you mightexpect a beautiful result, and thatâs just what you findat Helen of Troy, LP in El Paso, Texas, USA. Yet, thesebuildings are also unique in a very functional way. Ex-terior walls are sloped outward, providing the win-dows with an element of solar control in a sun-drenched environment. At the same time, this refresh-ing statement contrasts well with an array of slender, vertical columns, again controlling the solar gain. Sev-eral curved panels help define a lobby and connectingarea between the two buildings. âThe ALUCOBONDÂź
material was perfect for what we wanted to achieve âa high profile, high-tech image with minimum main-tenance,â said Kevin Farrell A.l.A. of Farrell Design Associates, Inc., the architectural firm in Cardiff by the
Sea, California. âThe design contrast between the twobuildings also helps to define work areas, with admin-istrative type work in one building and marketing, sales, creative type work in another, while the lobbyand connecting area direct the traffic flow,â he added.Farrellâs high opinion of the project is confirmed by anhonorable mention award in the 2000 Design Awardscompetition conducted by the USA-based publication,Metal Architecture. Helen of Troy was one of more than175 entries in six different categories.Manufactured by the Benton, Kentucky plant of Alu-suisse Composites, Inc., gleaming ALUCOBONDÂź ma-terial in custom copper metallic provides a contrast tothe materialâs use in champagne metallic. Attachmentof the exterior panels at Helen of Troy is by a rout andreturn dry system with extrusions painted black.

âThis project was very complex and a good challen-ge,â said John Nolan of NOW Construction, Inc., theDallas, Texas, firm that served as distributor, fabrica-tor and installer of the ALUCOBONDÂź material panels. In an area that sees a lot of âtilt-up concreteâ, theALUCOBONDÂź material provides a unique, modernappearance, he indicated.Such a contemporary image is more appropriate fortodayâs El Paso than some might think. El Paso, sepa-rated from Mexico by the Rio Grande River, is pos-itioned to enjoy dynamic economic growth, as well asa history rich with international tradition. On the Mexico side of the Rio Grande is Juarez, Chihuahua,Mexico. Together, Juarez and El Paso combine to formâthe largest international metroplex in the world,âaccording to the El Paso Chamber of Commerce. This
metroplex is strategically located in a trade corridorthat links Canada and the USA to Mexico. The location allows many advantages, including a bi-lingual workforce on both sides of the border. It is, infact, this international connection that provides sig-nificant opportunities for companies like NOW Con-struction. âAll shop drawings were prepared in our Mexico City office, and the material was fabricated inCd. Juarez, Mexico,â said John Nolan. Other industriesfrom computer manufacturing to telecommunicationsare enjoying the quality of business support that thearea offers. Here, where the sun typically shines morethan 300 days a year, the prospect for more buildingsof ALUCOBONDÂź material also looks very bright.

Office BuildingWarsaw
The new impressive office building with its unusual and individualform was completed in 1998 in the narrow space surrounded by sand-stone-clad administrative buildings erected at the end of the 1940âs,in the very center of the city.It had seemed impossible to construct an interesting and visionarymass and to achieve a maximum usable area with unlimited access todaylight. From the front, the new building as high as its neighbours, seems to be unnoticeable. It is the ALUCOBONDÂź façade shining invarious shades of silver and grey, that distinguishes it from the over-whelming monotony. The protruding oriel courageously inclining to-ward the street, intrigues with its form symbolising the aggressive life-style of the city. This well-known architectural trick made it possibleto achieve the additional space inside the building totalling 11,570 m2,on an L-shaped plan, on the site area of 2,021 m2. The front façadeand the oriel cladding consists of 4 mm ALUCOBONDÂź panels, as wellas the curved surface of the staircase tower rising at right angles.Thedecoration bosses accenting cladding division enrich the aesthetic re-sult but still make the whole surface plain and clear. The example of Nowogrodzkaâs office building shows how easy it isto use ALUCOBONDÂź; the construction and design was carried outby the highly experienced architect Stefan Kurylowicz and his group, who had completed a few other well-known projects using ALUCOBONDÂź, not only for façades, but as the decoration elementas well (i.e. cornices, columns, and bent shaped finishing details).Technological innovations for ALUCOBONDÂź spread the possibility ofcreating high-tech architecture which meets all design and functio-nal requirements; the versatility and flexibility makes it possible tocreate and fulfil any highly sophisticated vision and make it an indi-vidual unforgettable architectural statement.

Exquisite ArchitectureThe Alf Lechner Museum inIngoldstadt built by the Munich archi-tects Fischer, proves to show that evenmeager basic conditions can lead to good results. The jury for the GermanFaçade Prize 2001 has awarded the re-construction of the simple âSheddach-halleâ into a museum the 1st prize inthe category for building recon-struction. The architects have drapedthe building in a glossy silvery coat ofALUCOBONDÂź paneling and created aâneutralâ covering for the sculptures ofthe steel sculptor, Alf Lechner.

Dubai 2000 Airshow â Dubai Airport Exhibition Cen-ter opened its doors to visitors for the first time for theDubai 2000 Airshow in November 1999. Dubai hoststhe worldâs 3rd largest Air Show, after Farnborough andLe Bourget. Due to its immense popularity and ever-increasing visitor turnout, a need was felt to constructa permanent site for holding this exhibition. The needwas realized in the form of the Dubai Airport Exhibition Centre located on the outskirts of the cityalong the Dubai International Airport. Since the Air-show is held only once every two years, the aim whenconstructing it was to develop it as a multi-purpose site where other exhibitions could also be held. TheExhibition Centre is unique as it is interlinked with theDubai International Airport runway with a dedicatedtaxiway for the exhibitors. The complex comprises a
number of independent structures: a Reception Buil-ding, two huge Exhibition Halls, Flight Control Cent-re, Flight Control Tower, Service Building, Fire Pum-ping Station, Corporate Chalets, Royal Pavilion, andC-130 hangar. A marvelous structure of clear cut, crisplines, the site not only stands out for its superb con-struction but is also a wonder when it comes to thecompletion period of the project. Hard to believe buttrue, the US$ 82 million complex comprising a number of independent buildings was completed inmerely 11 months. The ALUCOBONDÂź cladding workwas completed in a record time of 4 months and in-volved a team of 140 people. In terms of the area ofthe facility, the project stands out gracefully. The massive site features 100,000 m2 of static display area,25,000 m2 of exhibition space, 3,000 m2 of exhibitor

facilities, and other supporting infrastructure. The buil-ding has very quickly become a landmark in Dubai. The beautiful finish and magnificent architec-ture of the complex give it a distinct appearance.TheReception Building of the complex is one of the lon-gest continuously arched structures in Dubai. The façade of this building has been covered with ALUCOBONDŸ cladding material in the form of creamcoloured tiles. The canopy of the building is also ra-ted as one of the largest canopies in Dubai and hasbeen beautified using ALUCOBONDŸ. The interior ofthe Reception Building, a large area of open space de-signed to accommodate the queuing visitors, con-tinues this theme in RAL 1013 (cream colour) ALUCOBONDŸ. The tall columns in the interior havealso been cladded with ALUCOBONDŸ to add to the
beauty of the architecture. Passing through the Re-ception Building, one can find oneâs way to the Westand East Exhibition Halls. ALUCOBONDÂź has beenused in these halls as well. An 18 m high control tower, with ALUCOBONDÂź cladding in cream colour, gives an outstanding appearance of an ivory tusk. Theappearance of the Royal Pavilion has also been en-hanced using ALUCOBONDÂź cladding in an aestheticmanner. ALUCOBONDÂź has been used in a number ofplaces as square tiles, horizontal bars and in the formof edge curvature to add to the grandeur of the Dubai Airport Exhibition Centre. A total of 22,000 m2
of ALUCOBONDÂź material has been used in the pro-ject. The project managers chose ALUCOBONDÂź forone simple reason â to add to the magnificence of thisbeautiful complex.

While sophisticated equipment and alert air traffic controllers protectthe aircraft and their passengers and crew from crashing and colli-ding, ALUCOBONDÂź panels protect the exterior of many air trafficcontrol towers all over the world. Some of these impressive structuresare located at very exposed sites in extreme climates such as an Aus-tralian naval base in New South Wales.Architect Bruce Bowden says the facilities at HMAS Albatross compri-sed a 25 m high control tower and a technical support building in-corporating offices, workshops and an engineering plant.ALUCOBONDÂź was chosen as the most suitable product for severalreasons. âThe cladding needed to be able to withstand extreme cli-matic exposure and the harsh airfield atmosphere,â says Bowden. âItalso needed to be strong enough to contain and protect sensitivetechnical equipment.â ALUCOBONDÂź also creates an energy-efficientwork environment, is cost-effective, its appearance reflects the high-tech nature of the buildingâs functions and needs no cleaning.Over in Malaysia a new Airport was created where tropical jungle andoil palm plantations used to be. The Apron Control Tower at the newKuala Lumpur Airport in Sepang is clad with ALUCOBONDÂź to pro-tect it from the tropical sun and rain. The unique shape of the circu-lar control rooms supported by two square pillars is not only functio-nal, but its metallic look radiates a feeling of competency.Since the opening of Kuala Lumpur International Airport, part of theold Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport in Subang has been converted in-to a domestic airport. For this purpose a new Airport Control Towerhas recently been built. The top of the tower is enclosed by glass andALUCOBONDÂź panels. The sloping façade and the interfaces with thestructure and equipment created many different panel shapes and dif-ferent sizes. The installation was completed in less than 4 weeks!

When most people think of India the perception they have is a hugecountry with immense possibilities for development but where thebuilding construction sector has remained in its infancy. This percep-tion quickly changes to admiration once they see the new CrossroadsShopping and Entertainment Mall. Situated in the upmarket Haji Aliaarea in South Mumbai, Crossroads is Indiaâs first and only retail centre which pioneered the concept of âshoppertainmentâ by hou-sing shopping, entertainment and food all under one roof. Today, onesees the front façade of the building as a uniform composition of aglass curtain wall and ALUCOBONDÂź aluminium composite cladding. The façade stands as the curtain raiser for what is revealing a âglocalâ(global cum local) interior that acts as a microcosm of the changingsocio-cultural scenario in the country. The interior Plaza has been de-signed as a forecourt with reflections of glass and ALUCOBONDÂź alu-minium composite panels in a bronze metallic finish combined withpanels in red, blue and yellow. This play with colours gives the buil-ding interior a vibrant and modern look which invites people from thegrey city street to come inside and explore more. For the exterior curved front façade, more than 3000 m2
ALUCOBONDÂź were used. The bronze metallic finished sheets wereformed into tray panels and installed on a light aluminium sub-struc-ture using an economical T-extrusion as a sub-frame, which assuredperfect alignment and quick installation. Crossroads stands as an example of thoroughness in its construction and development. Oneof the mallâs principle accomplishments is the attention to details andits use of modern materials and construction methods. The project also hints at the increasing trend of foreign collaborations and the useof imported material like ALUCOBONDÂź composite panels that willsoon become the norm in India.

Colour lending quality to lifeâBy creating an effect through colour Iam able to contribute towards shapingthe environment. This is my femalecontribution to the building professionand also as a person.â The three blocks of the âParc de laRouvraieâ excel in a prominent waywith their three façades and integratedbalcony elements. Only on the northside do we see four lines of windows setacross the central part and built inflush with the façade. The blocks are of
differing height and are 15, 14 and 13floors high. The major task was mainly structuring the unusually largebalcony space. The north walls were toserve as the backbone of the building. The aim was to avoid any monotonoussingle-colour effect on the surfaces andto create an optical reduction of theirheight. The balcony areas of eachblock were allotted 3 different coloursfrom the 7-colour range and structuredhorizontally, shade by shade, with fibre-cement panels. In combination
with this, the silver-metallic ALUCOBONDŸ panels optically holdthe coloured balconies together in a neutral and elegant way. Furthermore, the entrance areas, me-tallic constructions, windows, rearwalls of the balconies, sun-shadingcurtaining and strip blinds of the threebuildings constitute a unity of unob-trusive colour.
Bianca Pestalozzi

Open newsstands in Sevilla
The project for the construction and in-stallation of new newsstands in Sevilla,Spain, which was set up in 1999, has ledto economizing on space for these publicsales stands. The newsstands, designedby the Tusquets, Diaz & Asociados team, were built with 15 mm thick compositeALUCOREÂź panels, which lend thesestructures particular insulating and rigidi-ty properties. The project includes theinstallation of 600 units manufactured byMobimur, S.L. while the industrial deve-lopment was carried out by MobimurTecnica. The surface of the panels perstand is about 18 m2. The manufacturingsystem for these stands was based on arigid structure by means of aluminumsections, specifically designed and extru-ded for this project, thus producing frames of different shapes, depending onthe coupling method. To this respect, acoupling technique without using any screws, anchorage or adhesive was usedfor the assembly of the ALUCOREÂź panels.
