Volume 59, No. 18 26 October 2017 Meets Thursdays at 6pm for 6.30pm at the Foundry Hotel High Street Golden Square. Rotary Making a Difference President’s update Club meeting 26 October 2017 It was a case of Merlyn the Magician this week, not pulling rabbits out of hats or hares out of her nose, but doing the triple act of chairperson, guest speaker (at short notice) and movie ticket seller. As expected from our accomplished international stage performer, Merlyn of course achieved this with aplomb, taking us on a pictorial journey around Kyoto as we heard about her recent invitation to perform early 20 th century Australian music with other international performers. Her repertoire even included a cooee song. Something for RC Bendigo President Val Broad to consider for the Bendigo Youth Choir! On the subject of ticket sales for the movie premiere of Murder on the Orient Express to support End Polio Now, Foundation Chair Merlyn has reported a wonderful response with 55 tickets sold to our club members and their friends. I am looking forward to a fun social night. Thanks to RC Bendigo Strathdale for leading this cluster initiative, and thanks to members for supporting the End Polio Now cause so strongly. Anne also extracted some additional donations from members towards the cause in exchange for ‘purple pinkies’. We had a glitch with our internet connection this week, so Clive could only live stream and record the early part of our meeting unfortunately. Apologies to our remote viewers. Terry presented to me banners from three clubs that he visited during his recent Rotary Friendship Exchange visit to Canada. We also welcomed Greg back into harness as Treasurer after his travels out west. We celebrated the prominent story on our half century achiever Ron Deveraux in the D9800 Networker this month. Ron joined the RC of Warracknabeal on 4 January 1967, when meals cost $2.20, and Rotary dues wer$22. Ron has had many Rotary achievements over the years, including club president, PHF, overseas aid projects, and District RYLA roles including Chair in 1986/87. I was interested in Ron’s observations about the importance of Rotary needing to evolve and modernise to remain relevant and successful. Thanks to Anne and Matthew for promoting Ron and our club. It was also reported in passing that the Ellis’s are continuing their proud family association with the CFA, with Max recently receiving his 65 years service medal, and Ian, already a Bendigo Fire bendigosouthrotary.org.au http://www.twitter.com/RotaryBendigoS Rotary Club of Bendigo South Signpost

Rotary – Making a Difference

President’s update

Club meeting 26 October 2017

It was a case of Merlyn the Magician this week, not pulling rabbits out of hats or hares out of her

nose, but doing the triple act of chairperson, guest speaker (at short notice) and movie ticket seller.

As expected from our accomplished international stage performer, Merlyn of course achieved this

with aplomb, taking us on a pictorial journey around Kyoto as we heard about her recent invitation

to perform early 20th

century Australian music with other international performers. Her repertoire

even included a cooee song. Something for RC Bendigo President Val Broad to consider for the

Bendigo Youth Choir!

On the subject of ticket sales for the movie premiere of Murder on the Orient Express to support

End Polio Now, Foundation Chair Merlyn has reported a wonderful response with 55 tickets sold to

our club members and their friends. I am looking forward to a fun social night. Thanks to RC

Bendigo Strathdale for leading this cluster initiative, and thanks to members for supporting the End

Polio Now cause so strongly. Anne also extracted some additional donations from members

towards the cause in exchange for ‘purple pinkies’.

We had a glitch with our internet connection this week, so Clive could only live stream and record

the early part of our meeting unfortunately. Apologies to our remote viewers. Terry presented to

me banners from three clubs that he visited during his recent Rotary Friendship Exchange visit to

Canada. We also welcomed Greg back into harness as Treasurer after his travels out west.

We celebrated the prominent story on our half century achiever Ron Deveraux in the D9800

Networker this month. Ron joined the RC of Warracknabeal on 4 January 1967, when meals cost

$2.20, and Rotary dues wer$22. Ron has had many Rotary achievements over the years, including

club president, PHF, overseas aid projects, and District RYLA roles including Chair in 1986/87. I

was interested in Ron’s observations about the importance of Rotary needing to evolve and

modernise to remain relevant and successful. Thanks to Anne and Matthew for promoting Ron and

our club.

It was also reported in passing that the Ellis’s are continuing their proud family association with the

CFA, with Max recently receiving his 65 years service medal, and Ian, already a Bendigo Fire

Station Life Member, being awarded Life Membership of the CFA, which is a state-wide

recognition. Congratulations to two community service achievers.

Our tall poppy this week, taking home the Foundry voucher, was Jennie Hughes. Jennie, supported

by Clive, hosted and catered for our ‘Pleasant Sunday Afternoon’ Celtic music recital for the End

Trachoma by 2020 initiative. Jennie’s sister Pauline and husband Rob from Avonmore Estate

donated and served their organic wine. Tony reported on the relaxing social afternoon enjoyed by

members and friends, and the successful fund raising that was achieved.

The ‘Pleasant Sunday Afternoon’ proceeds will be presented to PDG Murray Verso for the Rotary

End Trachoma by 2020 initiative when he addresses us on this project at our meeting this week.

There will then be a Board meeting to follow.

And finally, remember to check if you are rostered for meeting duty, make sure you know what you

are supposed to do (ask Rod or Tony if you aren’t sure), and don’t forget to tell the attendance

officer listed in the Signpost (Zoe, or Paul in her absence) if you will not attend a meeting.

Cheers

Bernie Young
