Volume 58, No. 24 15 December 2016 Meets Thursdays 6pm for 6.30pm at the Foundry Hotel High St, Golden Square. “Rotary Serving Humanity” Presidents Report. On Thursday December 15 we held our club’s annual Christmas Dinner Celebration at the Bendigo Club in Park Street, Strathdale. The evening was well attended by members and their partners. Guest speaker was Pastor David Lovell from the Bendigo Baptist Church who also serves as the chaplain at the South Bendigo Football Club. Our Music Scholarship winner, Deanna Jerman from The Bendigo Senior Secondary College who is the school’s musician of the year, was also our special guest. Deanna provided the entertainment for the night with a bracket of 4 very different songs and then closing our night with a lovely rendition of Have Yourself a Very Merry Christmas. The evening had been very well planned by Anne, Jennie and Ros and we all enjoyed the fruits of their labours. Some of us have been busy attending local school awards nights in the past two weeks. It has been very pleasing to meet with some past winners and see how they have gone from strength to strength. Examples are, firstly Kate Salvador, who won the George Symons Award at South East College in 2015 who now in year 11 at BSSC took out 6 academic awards and one major sporting award. Secondly Darcie Andrea, two years ago took out the Jim Osborne Scholarship at Crusoe College. This year in year 12 at BSSC Darcie not only delivered the Student Council report but was recognized with a Student Citizenship Award. Also at East Loddon, our winner of the Bill Ashman Award in 2014 in Lisa Mitchell who also performed the role of MC at our scholarship night was the Dux of the school in year 12. The winners of the 2016 scholarships are- Tom Glazebrook Award, Girton Grammar-Aguel Arok George Symons Award, Bendigo South East College- Sophie Keating Jim Osborne Award, Crusoe College- Phoebe Jane Bill Ashman Award, East Loddon P-12- joint winners-Ella Hocking & Jo Cartwright Ern O’Shea Award , Catholic College –TBA 2017 bendigosouthrotary.org.au http://www.twitter.com/RotaryBendigoS Rotary Club of Bendigo South Signpost

President’s Report.

On Thursday December 15 we held our club’s annual Christmas Dinner Celebration at the Bendigo

Club in Park Street, Strathdale. The evening was well attended by members and their partners.

Guest speaker was Pastor David Lovell from the Bendigo Baptist Church who also serves as the

chaplain at the South Bendigo Football Club. Our Music Scholarship winner, Deanna Jerman from

The Bendigo Senior Secondary College who is the school’s musician of the year, was also our

special guest. Deanna provided the entertainment for the night with a bracket of 4 very different

songs and then closing our night with a lovely rendition of Have Yourself a Very Merry Christmas.

The evening had been very well planned by Anne, Jennie and Ros and we all enjoyed the fruits of

their labours.

Some of us have been busy attending local school awards nights in the past two weeks. It has been

very pleasing to meet with some past winners and see how they have gone from strength to

strength. Examples are, firstly Kate Salvador, who won the George Symons Award at South East

College in 2015 who now in year 11 at BSSC took out 6 academic awards and one major sporting

award. Secondly Darcie Andrea, two years ago took out the Jim Osborne Scholarship at Crusoe

Recently we accepted the task offered by our district to organize a visit to Bendigo by the

vocational study group coming to us from the Phillipines. Lindsay Jolley, Cora and Bob Edgar from

the Rotary Club of Bendigo came together during the past week to set things in train. Lindsay also

asked for members who would be willing to home host during the visit so if you are interested in

helping out please make contact with Lindsay.

Toshi will remain with his current host family, Brendan and Robyn Williams, until around Jan 10.

He will then move to Geoff and Irene Mc Kinna’s for the remainder of the summer holidays. If you

are doing any interesting day trips please consider inviting him along.

As we draw near to the Christmas Day celebrations I am recalling the message from Pastor David

Lovell delivered at our Christmas Dinner night. David mentioned on several occasions how we all

need hope in our lives. On reflection, I thought about what a very negative attitude we can have

when we talk about some individuals being hopeless or certain situations being hopeless. As

Rotarians one would hope that we can try to always approach certain individuals who are down on

their luck or certain scenario’s that seem to have little chance of a good outcome with positivity and

perhaps engender some hope.

I wish you all a very joyful festive season and hope to see you all again when we resume on January

12 at our place in 121 Allies Road to commence another year that will provide lots of positive

outcomes for some who are not as fortunate as we are.

Roundup from our Cluster Clubs….. The Rotary Showcase Programme 2016-17 – A New Initiative As Presidents will now be aware DG Neville John has initiated a Rotary Showcase Program for the District during this 2016-17 Year. Its aims are:-

1. To exhibit the wide breadth of Rotary District 9800 contributions to the local community and internationally.

2. To select the most appropriate venues and/or events within the district where Rotary activity can be showcased to achieve optimum understanding and recognition.

3. To fully utilise the operation of the Rotary Showcases to recruit new members to District 9800 clubs.

On that basis your District Rotary Showcase Committee has selected 3 excellent venues and dates to provide maximum exposure:

Bendigo – Around Lake Weeroona on Australia Day, Thursday 26th January, 2017. Melbourne – In the Atrium alongside Fed Square on Saturday 25th February, 2017. Echuca – At the Steam Rally on Saturday 10th June and Sunday 11th June, 2017.

In Bendigo we will have marquees around the Lake Weeroona boardwalk. District aims to borrow marquees from Clubs. District will provide covered trestle tables and Corflute signage, the latter to provide visual uniformity. There will be some requirement to group exhibitors.
