Volume 58, No. 43 18 th May 2017 Meets Thursdays at 6pm for 6.30pm at the Foundry Hotel High Street Golden Square. “Rotary Serving Humanity” President’s Report Our regular dinner meeting held on Thursday May 18 found us at the Foundry Arms where we welcomed along Graeme Meager the chairman of The Bendigo and Central Mallee Lifeline. During the week we had forwarded off our donation of $2500 of which $1500 was raised at our dinner held recently and the board approved an additional $1000 be added to the pot. Graeme gave us a brief run down on the operations of Lifeline in our district where they are averaging 60 calls per week from lonely and some very distressed persons. It costs around $3000 to train a Lifeline volunteer and given the state government only contributes a third of the overall budget, it puts a huge burden back on our local community to attempt to raise the additional funds. At present, there is no shortage of potential candidates wanting to become councilors for Lifeline but the lack of funding does mean many applicants have to be deferred. Members of our current board share the view that perhaps our club should try to conduct an annual event and encourage some of the other local Rotary Clubs to work on a more combined approach to ensure the potential of Rotary as a supporter of Lifeline can be maximized. Currently a number of clubs are paddling small canoes in all directions and each only raising a drop in a bucket compared with what we could do if we came together and worked as a team on perhaps one or two combined major efforts. Tickets are now on sale for The Silvie Paladino and Victorian Welsh Choir Concert scheduled for Sunday September 10 at the Ulumburra Theatre. Club members can take advantage of our group booking arrangement and purchase a ticket at a special rate of $45 p.p. by paying into the club account. To purchase your tickets from the club- use direct banking arrangements as follows: BSB No. 633000 Acc No. 140951740 State the word: Concert and your name of course. Members writing cheques need to hand them directly to Greg Noonan ASAP. It will be first in best dressed with the money paid no reserving seat and paying later will be permitted. Also advise your friends that they can now purchase via the Capital Theatre booking office and the group booking price is also available to them if they can round up a group of at least 10. Scatter fortnight has been scheduled in place of a regular club meeting next week. Please try to make an effort to visit one of our neighbouring clubs and let Bernie know where you are intending to go so we can try to cover all clubs. Meeting arrangements for the other clubs are listed in the Signpost as they are in every weekly edition. In partnership with the Rotary Club of Eaglehawk we have decided to accept a male exchange student from France commencing sometime in July by the name of Victor Arnaud Pierre SAELENS. Victor happens to have a birthday day on August 15-same date as me. Must be a good chap! He will turn 17 at his next birthday just a little younger than me by a tiny margin. His sponsor club is in district 1520 and is known as Lille-Septentrion. Victor lives in the town of CROIX. The Science and Engineering Challenge was again a major event for our club and again very successful. Thanks to Rod Spitty for all his hard work. I know Rod is seeking some support perhaps from some of our newer members to help plan this event. If it is something you would like to help support seek Rod out for a chat and more importantly offer your services. Tony Plant - President

A letter from our newest exchange student Victor Arnaud Pierre Saelens Dear Tony, First, I am so exited to do this experience in this amazing country, thank you so much to give me this chance. For sure, I and my family will be very pleased to meet my host family in Lille, we invite them in our house. We can also visit Lille together. This is not so far away from Paris, one hour by high speed train, in north of France. If they could not, we can arrange a meeting in Paris too. In order to contact them, would it be possible to send me their mobile phone numbers. I live in Lille. This is the forth city in France behind Paris, Marseilles, Lyon. We are around 1 millions inhabitants including the suburbs. Lille is the cross of Europe, closed to London, Bruxelles and Paris. I want to thank your club to host me first and also the second one. Can you give me also the contacts of your Rotary Club of Eaglehawk in order to thank them. I have already visited the school’s website, it seems wonderful, I am looking forward to go there. Thanks for your quick return. Warm regards, Victor Saelens

Victoria Welsh Choir Concert

Ulumbarra Theatre and the Rotary Club of Bendigo South present The Victoria Welsh Choir on Sunday September 10 at Ulumbarra Theatre. The event is a fundraiser to support the provision of additional theatre facilities, as well as providing bursaries for talented local musical artists. The Victoria Welsh choir is well known by Bendigo concert goers and, with their beautiful singing in four part male harmony, and their entertaining and humorous concert presentations, is always a favorite event. For this concert, the choir will be joined by principal guest artist Silvie Paladino as well as Bendigo Senior Secondary College Musician of the Year award winners for the past 2 years, Aidan Purdy and Deanna Jerman. Silvie Paladino is one of Australia’s most versatile and talented musical theatre entertainers. She has had leading roles in many Australian productions, as well as performing at notable events in Europe and America. She is also well known as a regular in Nine Networks “Carols by Candlelight”. Aidan Purdy is a classical tuba player currently pursuing further musical training in Adelaide. Deanna Jerman is a vocalist currently pursuing further musical training in Melbourne. Tickets are now available at the Capital Theatre booking office, by phone on 54346100 or on line at www.gotix.com.au. Tickets will be on sale at 9.15am, Wednesday May 3.
