A football club was first formed in Brading in1871 and joined the Isle of Wight League on its formation in 1898. During the 1920s & 1930s the Club played in the IOW 2nd Division and won the title on numerous occasions. In 1948 promotion was gained to Island League Division 1, which proceeded to be one of the most successful eras for the club. During the 1950s the Club won the Division 1 Championship for a record 8 consecutive seasons, also winning the IOW Challenge, Memorial and Jubilee Cups. In 1973, the Club joined the Hampshire League in Division 4. Promotion was gained in three successive seasons, and in 1975/76 the club won Hampshire League Division 2 and the Hampshire Intermediate Cup for the third time in five years. In 1977 the Club also won the prestigious IOW Gold Cup. In 1977/78 the club finished 4th place in a very strong Hampshire League Division 1. During the 1980s Brading Town became established in the Hampshire League. Unfortunately the Club lost its place in the 1st Division due to relegation in 1992. After finishing 5th place in the Hampshire Premier League in 2001, the Club entered a difficult period. The following season saw us finish 4th from bottom. Despite this, the Club applied and joined the newly formed Wessex League Division 2 for the 2004/05 season. Fortunes on the pitch improved, with 2004/05 being the most impressive sea-son to date with all of the Club’s three teams enjoying success. The A Team – Champions, IOW Combination Divi-sion 2; Reserves - IOW Junior A Trophy and promotion to the IOW Division 1 having finished runners up in Division 2; and our Wessex League Team securing the IOW Gold Cup for the first time in 30 years. Having enjoyed such suc-cess on the pitch, and with various ground and facilities improvements, the Club was delighted to be promoted to the newly named Wessex League Premier Division for the 2006/07 season. In October 2007, Roy Penney stood down as chairman after 5 years and was replaced by Keith Newbery. After a 28 year absence the club was elected back into the FA Vase and 2008 saw us enter the FA Cup for the first time. FA Cup sponsors E-ON chose Brading Town FC as the team to follow in the competition. This was a proud and historical moment for the Club. Sadly 2008 saw the death of Peter Henry our grounds man who had been associated with the Club for 62 unbroken years. He origi-nally joined the Club as a player. In Pete’s memory, the ground was renamed ‘The Peter Henry Ground’, Vicarage Lane. The 2009/10 season ended victorious with the Wessex League Premier Division Team winning the IOW Gold Cup having been runners up for the last 3 years. The Reserve Team won the IOW Division 2, and the A Team were runners up in the IOW Combination 1. The Club was also recognised by achieving 3rd place Fair Play Awards, and received Brading Mayor’s Community Award 2010. At the end of the 2011 season, the club achieved 4th place in the Wessex Premier League; with the Reserve Team coming 3rd in Division 1 of the IWFA Saturday League, and the A Team winning IWFA Combination 1. Brading Town also won the Ryde & District Cup. Having hosted several matches for the Island Games event at the end of June 2011, Brading Town was voted the friendliest ground at the Island Games.

Romsey Town: A brief history The history of Romsey Town Football Club goes back to 1886 when a meeting took place at the Town Hall to consider the desirability of forming a football club in the town.

In the season 1889/90 they played their football at Alma Road, playing in local football. By the 1920’s they had gained entry into the Hampshire League and played their games at Priestlands which is now Romsey School. They had great success and won the Hampshire Intermediate Cup for the first time.

After the Second World War Romsey Town went on to produce some of their best attacking sides. In 1949 they reached the 2nd Round of the F.A. Cup and the final of the Hampshire Senior Cup in the same season. By 1955-56 they moved to their current home – the Bypass Ground – however they were relegated and the club fell into decline.

By the 1970’s the club started to climb out of the doldrums of lower league football and in 1974-75 won the Hampshire League Division 4 title. By the late 80’s Romsey had reached the Hampshire League Division 1 and in 1990 became the second club (after Bashley) to win the Wessex League title.

In the years to follow the club could not maintain the high standards and went into another decline until re-cently. In 2007 the club finished 3rd in Division 1 of the Wessex League and gained promotion to the Premier Division. After a good start to the 2007-08 campaign, the side suffered a poor second half of the season and finished 18th. The reserves finished 4th in Combination 2 and were beaten finalists in the Southampton Sen-ior Cup Final at St Mary’s.

It was great to start the season with a win last week against Bournemouth Poppies in our first league and as we played on the Friday night we

were top of the league for a few hours. Although it was a good start and everyone was pleased after all the hard work we have put in, in pre-season we

know that there is a very long way to go as we found out last season.

Today we welcome everyone from Brading Town for this season venture into the FA Cup which is a repeat of last season FA Cup draw with Brading

winning it after a replay. Lets hope we can reverse the result today and progress to the next round where we will face the winners of Whitchurch V

Bemerton. Next Tuesday we return to league action when we visit Moneyfields and then we return home against

Newport IOW on Saturday 27th August. Wayne Mew
