A football club was first formed in Brading in1871 and joined the Isle of Wight League on its formation in 1898. During the 1920s & 1930s the Club played in the IOW 2nd Division and won the title on numerous occasions. In 1948 promotion was gained to Island League Division 1, which proceeded to be one of the most successful eras for the club. During the 1950s the Club won the Division 1 Championship for a record 8 consecutive seasons, also win-ning the IOW Challenge, Memorial and Jubilee Cups. In 1973, the Club joined the Hampshire League in Division 4. Promotion was gained in three successive seasons, and in 1975/76 the club won Hampshire League Division 2 and the Hampshire Intermediate Cup for the third time in five years. In 1977 the Club also won the prestigious IOW Gold Cup. In 1977/78 the club finished 4th place in a very strong Hampshire League Division 1. During the 1980s Brading Town became established in the Hampshire League. Unfortunately the Club lost its place in the 1st Division due to relegation in 1992. After finishing 5th place in the Hampshire Premier League in 2001, the Club entered a difficult period. The following season saw us finish 4th from bottom. Despite this, the Club applied and joined the newly formed Wessex League Division 2 for the 2004/05 season. Fortunes on the pitch improved, with 2004/05 being the most impressive sea-son to date with all of the Club‘s three teams enjoying success. The A Team – Champions, IOW Combination Divi-sion 2; Reserves - IOW Junior A Trophy and promotion to the IOW Division 1 having finished runners up in Division 2; and our Wessex League Team securing the IOW Gold Cup for the first time in 30 years. Having enjoyed such suc-cess on the pitch, and with various ground and facilities improvements, the Club was delighted to be promoted to the newly named Wessex League Premier Division for the 2006/07 season. In October 2007, Roy Penney stood down as chairman after 5 years and was replaced by Keith Newbery. After a 28 year absence the club was elected back into the FA Vase and 2008 saw us enter the FA Cup for the first time. FA Cup sponsors E-ON chose Brading Town FC as the team to follow in the competition. This was a proud and historical moment for the Club. Sadly 2008 saw the death of Peter Henry our grounds man who had been associated with the Club for 62 unbroken years. He origi-nally joined the Club as a player. In Pete‘s memory, the ground was renamed ‗The Peter Henry Ground‘, Vicarage Lane. The 2009/10 season ended victorious with the Wessex League Premier Division Team winning the IOW Gold Cup having been runners up for the last 3 years. The Reserve Team won the IOW Division 2, and the A Team were runners up in the IOW Combination 1. The Club was also recognised by achieving 3rd place Fair Play Awards, and received Brading Mayor‘s Community Award 2010. At the end of the 2011 season, the club achieved 4th place in the Wessex Premier League; with the Reserve Team coming 3rd in Division 1 of the IWFA Saturday League, and the A Team winning IWFA Combination 1. Brading Town also won the Ryde & District Cup. Having hosted several matches for the Island Games event at the end of June 2011, Brading Town was voted the friendliest ground at the Island Games.

Today‘s opposition travels over, for the second time this season, from the Isle of Wight and is Brading Town. Brading have already once defeated Romsey this season when the teams met back in August in the F.A. Cup were Brading ran out 1-0 winners in a tight affair. Last season‘s results: 2-0 and 1-0 to Brading.

Romsey Town: A brief history The club was formed in 1886 when a meeting took place at the Town Hall ―to consider the desirability of forming a foot-ball club in the town.‖ Initially they played at Alma Road and in 1889 began playing in local league football where they had successful spells in a number of competitions before joining the Southampton League as founder members in 1908. The 1920s were a good decade for Romsey Town and after winning the Hampshire Intermediate Cup and the South-ampton Senior League they gained entry into the Hampshire League but struggled in the West Division and returned to local football after just one season. In 1930, Romsey moved to Priestlands, which is now Romsey School, and returned to the Hampshire League where they were placed in Division 2. Here the club were better prepared as they went on to produce some of their best attacking sides, featuring well in both league and cup competitions. In 1956, they were relegated and moved to their current home, The Bypass Ground. Romsey continued in Division 3 but the early 1960s saw a further decline in fortune, eventually resulting in relegation from the league in 1964. Because the football pyramid was not yet in existence, the club were forced to drop right down to replace their reserves in Jun-ior Division 1 of the Southampton League and it was not until 1968 that they won promotion back to the senior section. By the 1970s, the club started to re-surface out of the doldrums of lower league football and after three successive pro-motions and a Southampton Senior Cup triumph in 1974. Romsey regained their Hampshire League status in 1975 where they promptly won the Division 4 title at the first attempt. Romsey proceeded to end the decade on a high note, again winning promotion and the Hampshire Intermediate Cup in 1978 followed by arguably their finest hour a year later when they won Division 2 title and unexpectedly defeated Farnborough Town 1–0 in the Hampshire Senior Cup final played at the The Dell. The 1980s saw Romsey consolidate in Division 1 before becoming founder members of the Wessex League in 1986. Here they soon became a strong force, and after some encouraging campaigns, they clinched the title in 1990 and en-joyed numerous good cup runs, most notably in 1990 when they lost 1–2 at home to Littlehampton Town in the 4th Quali-fying Round. A change of personnel saw Romsey fall into decline, and after a nightmare season in 1993 they were relegated back to Division 1 of the Hampshire League, from where they were again relegated. Despite these setbacks, Romsey bounced back and within two years they had won the Southampton Senior Cup and promotion back to the Wessex League. How-ever, they struggled in what had become a much harder competition. In 1998, Romsey were again relegated back to the Hampshire League and a series of managers and large turn-over of players saw them slip into the league's third di-vision. In 2003, the club hit an all-time low when they bottom but the club were re-elected, and since then they have en-joyed a remarkable upturn in fortunes. In 2004 the Wessex League absorbed the original Hampshire League and due to their facilities Romsey were placed in Division 1 and after some encouraging final placings they won promotion in 2007 back to the top flight, now known as the Premier Division. In the 2007–08 season with manager Glenn Burnett at the helm Romsey's team spirit was at an all-time high. The team were performing well on the pitch as well with two consecutive mid-table finishes really consolidat-ing Romsey's position in the Wessex Premier League. At the end of the 2009–10 season, Glenn Burnett decided to step down blaming his decision to leave on how much he had to do at the club. Assistant manager Lee Harrison soon fol-lowed suit. As well as a large percentage of the squad that Glenn had been crafting over the last few seasons. In the 2010–11 season, backed by the new management duo of Wayne Mew and Stuart Long, began with many trials as Romsey searched to rebuild a team. In the end Romsey finished in 16th position in the league despite a lack of players. One of the high points of the season was Romsey's longest-serving and most prolific player in their history, Simon De'ath, who finished with 25 league goals, placing him seventh in the goalscorer charts. Wayne Mew continued at the helm for the 2011–12 and managed to keep hold of striker Simon De'ath despite interest from numerous bigger clubs—including Winchester City.

Saturday Premier Division Review (12/11/11) In the Premier Division on Saturday, following a goalless first-half, GE HAMBLE went ahead away at FAWLEY AFC thanks to Ashley Jarvis. The hosts

then had Nick Lane sent off before substitute Ben Murphy popped up to earn the hosts a point in a game that finished 1-1 at the Waterside Sports and Social Club despite the visitors having opportunities to win the game. The Planemakers were, however, hampered by a handful of absentees with Jamie Musselwhite, Dougie Rowe, Matt Troon, Lewis Fennemore and Dan Turner all unavailable. FAREHAM TOWN went ahead from the penalty

spot away at NEW MILTON TOWN but the prolific Alex Baldacchino levelled to earn NEW MILTON TOWN a point and make it five games unbeaten for them as they continue to climb away from the foot of the table. That spot is currently occupied by HAYLING UNITED who lost 5-0 away at ROMSEY TOWN. Ryan Long hit a hat-trick for Town and Simon De'Ath bagged a brace in their 5-0 win at the Bypass Ground. Louis Bell was on target for HORNDEAN but it wasn't enough as a Steve Hutchings brace, one from the penalty spot, gave MONEYFIELDS a 2-1 away win at Fiveheads Park.

ALTON TOWN won 2-0 at home to NEWPORT (IOW) and ALRESFORD TOWN, Alton's local rivals, also won, impressively 5-3 at LAVERSTOCK & FORD. Sam Lanahan and Dan Pidgley were both on target as HAMWORTHY UNITED won 2-1 away at LYMINGTON TOWN. BRADING TOWN went ahead at home to CHRISTCHURCH thanks to a brace from James Ronson but the visitors produced a rousing comeback and won the game 4-2.

Tuesday Review (15/11/11)

On Tuesday night in the Russell Cotes Cup, John Simpkins' start to his temporary role of manager of NEWPORT (IOW) ended in a 1-0 away defeat at

CHRISTCHURCH. Ben Osborne got the only goal of the game with a header on the hour mark. There was a huge shock at the Dell where Premier

Division side, LAVERSTOCK & FORD were beaten 7-0 at home by Hampshire Premier League side, QK Southampton. Elsewhere, in another upset,

at Dover Road, MONEYFIELDS lost 2-1 at home to neighbours, University of Portsmouth. Premier Division leaders, BEMERTON HEATH HARLE-

QUINS, won 2-1 away at BLACKFIELD & LANGLEY also in the Russell Cotes Cup thanks to goals from Slade and Pratt. After extra time, NEW MIL-

TON TOWN were also victims of an upset, losing 3-2 at home to Liphook United.

In the League Cup on Tuesday, EAST COWES VICS produced an upset, beating FAREHAM TOWN of the Premier Division, 2-0, at Beatrice Avenue.

The Division One side got two first-half goals through Matt Evans. In the Premier Division on Tuesday night, BOURNEMOUTH POPPIES condemned new BRADING TOWN manager Nigel Murray to a defeat, by 5-0 at Victoria Park. Hogan put Poppies ahead on 19 minutes and Dave Ewen added two further goals in the first-half, including one from the penalty spot. James Pinder added a fourth on 52 minutes before Ewen completed his hat-trick, and his second from the spot, with nine minutes remaining. Else-

where, ALTON TOWN won 2-1 away to LYMINGTON TOWN in the other Premier Division game.

Wednesday Review (16/11/11 On Wednesday night in the Premier Division, HORNDEAN ran out 3-1 winners away at FAWLEY AFC. The visitors' goals came from Nathan Paxton, Nick Taylor and Dan Martin.
