Romsey Town 6-2 Alton Town Romsey extended their unbeaten run in style last Saturday as we ran out 6-2 winners against Alton Town despite having top goalscorer Simon De‘ath out unwell. Two goals from Ryan Long, and one each from Macs Sampays, Ross Gregory, Chris Hall and Ben White against his former club was enough to secure Romsey an eighth win in 9 games and sent The Town to 5th place in the table!

6-2

3-2

Lymington Town 3-2 Romsey Town Our incredible unbeaten streak was brought to an end on Tuesday night when we went down 3-2 away, for the second time in the past two seasons, to Lymington Town. Things were looking promising when Romsey took a 2-0 advantage following goals from Chris Hall and new signing Jack Vallis but Lymington came back to shock Romsey with a 3-2 win.

New Signing: Jack Vallis I was delighted to see Jack Vallis had grabbed his first goal for The Town on his first start on Tuesday. Jack has signed for us on dual-registration forms from local Conference South side Eastleigh having previously made appearances for England Schoolboys. Jack plays in defence and will add a wealth of talent to the Town‘s defence.

Cup Draws The third round draw for the Hampshire Senior Cup and Sydenhams League Cup were completed re-cently and we have drawn New Milton away on the 6th December in the Hampshire Senior Cup and New Milton again in the League Cup on 13th December.

Nothing can be definitively found to indicate the exact date when Hayling United F.C came into existence, however we do know that there was a team playing under the Hayling Island name in 1884. Two fixtures are evidenced in the Hampshire football annals both played and reported upon in 1884. The second was reported upon in the Hampshire Independent newspaper of the 28th November 1884. This mentioned a match under "Association Rules" played at St. Georges recreation ground Portsmouth between Hayling Island and The North Lancashire Regiment, the northern opponents took the honours on that day with an emphatic 8-0 win. The first match known to have been played by a Hayling Island team was against the team or club that eventually went on to become Portsmouth F.C. Records indicate that this match was played on 15/11/1884. Despite being on the wrong end of a 5-1 drubbing to our near neighbours, who played at the time under the name of AFC Portsmouth, the fixture threw up an even more interesting fact in that appearing for Portsmouth that day was a struggling Southsea doctor who played under the name of A. C. Smith. Arthur Conan Smith has become better known as the creator and author of Sherlock Holmes. Teams under the Hayling Island F.C name continued to play through until 1952 in the Waterlooville and District League at which time they entered the stronger Portsmouth League. They remained in this League until joining the Hampshire League in 1990-91 season when an away fixture at Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber backed Ec-chinswell gave Hayling its introduction to County League football. The end of the 1960‘s was also memorable for the football club as they wrote themselves into the record books on 29th December 1968 when two teams made up of Hayling Island F.C players played non-stop for six hours. This feat took the world record for the longest game away from South American sides Panoral and Santos. The early 1970‘s saw the club change it‘s name from Hayling Island F.C to the current of Hayling United F.C. With the restructuring of the National football pyramid system Hayling United joined The Wessex League for the season 2004-05, making their de-but away at Ordnance Survey of Southampton. A debut season runners-up spot and the promise of improved facilities ensured promotion to the second division. The 2005-06 season again saw an outstanding on the field effort to again finish runners-up, however the slow progress in moving to the new ground with the required facilities for the higher division meant promotion was not awarded on this occasion. Through the years the football club under whatever name has played at various sites across Hayling Island. Switching several times between Hay-ling and Mengham parks before overcoming planning and educational issues to hopefully settle at the new ground at the Hayling College where the potential is available to improve the facilities still farther and allow the club to progress beyond it‘s current league standing. For the start of 2006/07 season this has seen the installation of floodlights, a barrier around the pitch and some hard standing, and along with dugouts is the big-gest step the club has taken in recent times. Currently Hayling United has two mens teams playing in the Wessex Premier and Combination 1 Leagues respectively together with an Under 18 youth team. The club are also represented by numerous childrens teams across the many age groups and by a Ladies team. Hayling United‘s most famous ―son‖ has to be Bobby Tambling who not only played youth football for the club in the early 1950‘s but also briefly returned to mange the first eleven in the 1990‘s where he managed a couple of games as outside left despite being 50 years old. In between his youth football days and his managerial ones for Hayling United Bobby went off to play professional football for Chelsea, for whom he scored what is still a club record of 202 goals for and in doing so also made 3 appearances for England scoring one goal against France.

Today‘s opposition is Hayling United who are currently languishing at the bottom of the Sydenhams Wessex Premier Division. However, Hayling will be confident they can bounce back from a slow start and will be looking to start their comeback today although Romsey will be looking for revenge for last season‘s 7-0 loss against Hayling at the Bypass Ground. Last season‘s results: 4-4 and 7-0 to Hayling

Romsey Town: A brief history The history of Romsey Town Football Club goes back to 1886 when a meeting took place at the Town Hall to consider the desirability of forming a football club in the town.

In the season 1889/90 they played their football at Alma Road, playing in local football. By the 1920‘s they had gained entry into the Hampshire League and played their games at Priestlands which is now Romsey School. They had great success and won the Hampshire Intermediate Cup for the first time.

After the Second World War Romsey Town went on to produce some of their best attacking sides. In 1949 they reached the 2nd Round of the F.A. Cup and the final of the Hampshire Senior Cup in the same season. By 1955-56 they moved to their current home – the Bypass Ground – however they were relegated and the club fell into decline.

By the 1970‘s the club started to climb out of the doldrums of lower league football and in 1974-75 won the Hampshire League Division 4 title. By the late 80‘s Romsey had reached the Hampshire League Division 1 and in 1990 became the second club (after Bashley) to win the Wessex League title.

In the years to follow the club could not maintain the high standards and went into another decline until re-cently. In 2007 the club finished 3rd in Division 1 of the Wessex League and gained promotion to the Premier Division. After a good start to the 2007-08 campaign, the side suffered a poor second half of the season and finished 18th. The reserves finished 4th in Combination 2 and were beaten finalists in the Southampton Sen-ior Cup Final at St Mary‘s.

Wednesday Review (09/11/11) On Wednesday night, NEWPORT (IOW) won 2-0 at home to HORNDEAN in the League Cup and NEW MILTON TOWN won 2-1 away at

VERWOOD TOWN despite Mike Haskell scoring for the home side.

Tuesday Review (08/11/11) On Tuesday night in the Premier Division, BLACKFIELD & LANGLEY ran out 5-2 winners away at HAYLING UNITED. Steven Black

and Joshua Case were on target for the hosts, but goals from substitute Lloyd O'Neill and an incredible four-goal haul by Bobby

Scott gave the visitors all three points. Elsewhere in the Premier Division, LYMINGTON TOWN produced a dramatic come back to

win 3-2 at home to ROMSEY TOWN, having been 2-0 behind. Chris Hall and Jack Vallis had put the away side on course for victory

but Chris Marwood and the in-form Steve Whitcher levelled proceedings before Gareth Byres completed the comeback.

In the League Cup on Tuesday night, ALRESFORD TOWN were thrashed 7-2 at home by MONEYFIELDS. Jamie Hore struck a hat-

trick for the visitors and ex-AFC Bournemouth front man Steve Hutchings hit a brace for the Portsmouth-based side. Also on target

for the visitors was Danny Horrell, back at Moneyfields after a brief spell at Blackfield & Langley, and Luke Middleton. Alresford

were level at one point when Mike McEnery struck the post and Dean Cole converted the rebound, that made it 1-1 at the time. Mike

McEnery scored Alresford's other goal, a consolation goal which made it 6-2 before Moneyfields completed the scoring. Elsewhere

in the League Cup on Tuesday night, BOURNEMOUTH POPPIES comprehensively beat STOCKBRIDGE 7-0 at Victoria Park. Kayne

Daish and Dave Ewen both found the net for Poppies and Martin Warren scored a hat-trick. Substitute Luke Ingram also bagged a

brace for the hosts in front of a crowd of 48. CHRISTCHURCH won 1-0 at home to WARMINSTER TOWN thanks to a solitary goal

from Paul Roberts in front of 32 at Hurn Bridge. LAVERSTOCK & FORD beat their Wiltshire neighbours, PEWSEY VALE, 2-1 at the

Dell. Ricky Franklin was on target for the visitors but Eddie Perrett scored a brace for the hosts to seal their place in the next round.

COWES SPORTS produced an upset, winning 3-2 away at TOTTON & ELING. Jamie Feasey and Jo Tessem scored for Totton and

Eling but goals from Dominic Burbridge, Tom Dye and Darren Williams gave the Islanders the win.
