God – the ultimate source of light and of holiness.

On Erev Rosh HaShana we gather together in a variety of family settings for a festive meal to celebrate the beginning of the new Jewish year. We share challah and apples dipped in honey. We bless one another with the Jewish blessing of “Shana Tova u’metukah” – a good and a sweet year. Coming on the heels of the Jewish month of Elul, we have had the opportunity to do some soul searching. We are now ready to embrace our deepest spiritual reality and to re-connect with God and with one another.

Jewish wisdom teaches us that we have more spiritual power, as well as increased worldly power, when we reach beyond ourselves, beyond our individual families, and connect with community. That is why I so look forward to seeing you all, in person, at our Erev Rosh HaShana services this year.

Erev Rosh HaShana is a powerful spiritual moment not to be missed, in community. It is the moment when our personal introspection comes together with our connectedness to others. It is a time when we acknowledge not only our own divine spark, but the presence of that divine spark in those around us, as well.

Imperfect as we are, our increased awareness of the essential holiness of each and every soul strengthens our sense of humility and of purpose. We stand before God, in the presence of one

another, to acknowledge not only our appreciation of life, but also the potential of each one of us to contribute to a sense of increased blessing in the world.

This year, on Erev Rosh HaShana, we will make a few small changes in our service. We will begin our service with the singing of the well-known round of “Ma Tovu.” In similar fashion, we will conclude our service with the easy-to-sing-along tune of “Ozi V’zimrat Ya,” also sung in a round. Our Men’s Club led this round at our Rodef Sholom Temple hundredth anniversary celebration service, so it will be familiar to many. But we will also post recordings of these two rounds in our weekly emails so that you can listen again and enjoy the tunes in advance. In addition, there will be no appeal on Erev Rosh HaShana this year. It will be a time of pure communal joy and celebration. And, of course, we will have our famous Oneg desserts after services!

This Rosh HaShana will be the 15th time I will be celebrating the High Holy Days with Rodef Sholom Temple, and I truly hope to see you all on Erev Rosh HaShana as we usher in the New Jewish Year of 5776. May it be a year of sweetness and light for us all!

I take this opportunity to wish you and your loved ones a Shana Tova U’metukah – a good and a sweet year, filled with blessings and with joy!

I want to share with you one of my favorite teachings from our mystical tradition:

When God first contemplated creating the world and said, “Let there be light,” a primordial light came into being. This primordial light reflected God’s being. It was a light of holiness and of goodness. Only later did God create the sun, moon, and stars.

The mystics also taught us that a small spark of that primordial light is reflected in each and every one of us. Those small sparks of holiness make us who we are. Yet, daily life has a way of obscuring our essential holiness. We lose touch with the inner light of our souls. We grow more distant from ourselves and from

Tot thru Kindergarten Session in the Nursery: Parents are welcome to attend with this age group.

Elementary school Grades in the Library: Parents are encouraged to attend with this age group. When this program is over, children in this age group may continue to be supervised in quiet activities in the foyer. Supervision will end at 1:00 p.m. at which point unsupervised children will be returned to the sanctuary.

President’s Message Whenever this time of year rolls around, I always feel a sense of excitement. The excitement of a new year and a fresh start. A time when we are looking ahead and are planning for our future.

For many, this happens around January 1. We often hear folks planning their New Year’s Resolutions. For me, the planning happens now. Where can I get involved? Where can I be of service and a help to my family, my temple, and my community? How can I be and do better? I know that I am not alone. There are many who would also like to get involved and do more.

Consider becoming involved with our Social Action Committee. We are looking for a chair for this very worthwhile committee as well as more committee members to continue the projects and work that helps so many in our community. Our Member Services Committee, led by Elinor Gruber, could always use an extra hand to enhance the programs that welcome new members and support the current members of our congregation. The Men’s Club and Sisterhood continue their efforts on behalf of our synagogue and are a wonderful social outlet as well. As we approach the Days of Awe, let me extend my sincere wishes for good health, happiness and prosperity to you all.

Torah Fund Every woman at Rodef Sholom Temple has the opportunity to participate in preserving, promoting and perpetuating Conservative/Masorti Judaism through active giving to the Torah Fund Campaign of Women’s League in support of The Jewish Theological Seminary (New York, NY), Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies (Los Angeles, CA) and the Schechter Institute of Jewish Studies (Jerusalem). Our support of the Torah Fund Campaign helps strengthen Conservative/Masorti Judaism throughout the world and enhances the Jewish community by recognizing and appreciating our diverse families.

This year’s theme is “Nat’ah Karem--She plants a vineyard,” a phrase from the beloved prayer, Eishet Chayil, taken from the biblical book of Proverbs. We re-envision this prayer today with appreciation for the hard-working, generous, family-oriented woman, who “plants a vineyard by her own labors” (Proverbs 31:7). We honor her productivity, independence, creativity, and her orientation to a hopeful future with the 2016 Torah Fund pin/pendant, which is a gift to those who are Torah Fund Benefactors with a gift of $180 or more. Dedicated Production Team

After months of organizing and planning, the rehearsals are underway for The Action Against Sol Schumann, Rodef Sholom Temple Players’ first production. Perhaps some of you have you have noticed large, wooden panels residing in the auditorium. These are a part of our set that comes out on Wednesday nights and Sunday afternoons during rehearsals. The members of the production team include RST congregants, their families, friends, as well as congregants from Temple Beth El and Congregation Emet v’Or. It’s a dedicated group of people who are working very hard to make this play successful.

This one-act play is approximately 90 minutes long and is comprised of 25 short scenes. It is based on the story of Jacob Tannenbaum, an American Jew who was discovered in the 1980s to have had a history of being a kapo in a concentration camp during World War II, where he gained privileges for himself by behaving brutally toward the other Jews in the camp. Like Tannenbaum, Sol Schumann has emigrated to New York. Widowed and a pillar of the Jewish community, he has raised two sons who represent extremes of the Jewish experience. Aaron is an activist, sacrificing any possibility of personal life to his quest to avenge the lives lost in the Holocaust. Younger brother Michael, a successful accountant, has essentially left his Jewish identity behind and married a “shiksa.” The content of the play explores the sons’ and the Jewish community’s reaction to Sol’s revelation. We are left with questions. Is Sol a decent man who was forced to do the Germans’ bidding, or did he actually turn on his fellow Jews with unnecessary brutality?

The play touches on a very sensitive and a controversial topic. For those interested, Rabbi Dror will hold a discussion immediately after the performance about the nature of kapos and their roles in daily operations of concentration camps. We are hoping for a large audience not only from the RST community, but from other congregations and the Jewish community at large. The performance will take place Sunday, October 25th, at 3 pm. The tickets will be available for purchase at the door and online.

Rodef Sholom Damsky Memorial Golf Tournament Breaks Records…Again!

The most sponsors, the most prizes, the most dollars raised and the most fun! The 5th Annual Rodef Sholom Temple Golf Classic in Memory of Martin Damsky was definitely a record breaker!

Tournament Chair Kenny Murov welcomed 76 golfers on Sunday morning, June 28th, to Kingsmill Resort’s beautiful Woods Course. The weather was perfect throughout the day. RELOCATION: MOVING FORWARDHONORING OUR PAST—BUILDING OUR FUTUREWe are pleased to report that there has been a great deal of interest shown by potential buyers for our building. A Vietnamese Catholic Church has visited five times and is in the process of ordering an appraisal. In addition, interest has been shown by a few other churches and the American Legion. We are anticipating the likelihood of an offer, although at this time we have no indication of how much the offer will be or when the potential buyer might want to take possession.

We are developing a contingency plan to operate from the UJC campus in the event that we must vacate the current building before our new Temple is completed. We are going through a process to determine what we want to take with us, what to leave behind, and what can be disposed of.

On the building front, our site consultants and engineers have examined three potential sites at the UJC and have made a recommendation that we build in the area where the swimming pool is currently located. That site does not impact any wetlands, gives us easy access to parking and the existing UJC facilities, and has better access for stormwater management. The use of that site would necessitate the relocation of the pool, which appears to be an acceptable concept. Our Design Committee has accepted this recommendation and passed it on to our Steering Committee. A report has been submitted to the Army Corps of Engineers, who must agree that there is no impact on wetlands. The next step will be discussions with and seeking the approval of the UJC Campus Committee and Board.

In the meantime, Mark Levin, our architect, has presented a revised draft of a design for the building that has been reviewed by the Design Committee. Comments and suggestions were made, and Mark will provide the next iteration in the next few weeks.Fundraising is in full swing. We have raised approximately $1,500,000, primarily from major donors. Our wider fundraising activities will begin soon.
