If you came to services last week (Jan 25) you would have had an opportunity to try our new prayerbook, Mishkan T’fi lah, for the fi rst time. It’s different than any prayerbook our movement has created, and it will take some adjustment to feel comfortable with the new siddur. Each month we will be using Mishkan T’fi lah on the last Friday of the month so you can become comfortable with its format and learn how worship can become even more meaningful with it. In addition, our clergy team will be teaching a course on becoming comfortable with the new prayerbook once a month starting this month, and continuing through May. The class will be the same each month, so if you can’t come this month, try to come to one of the other dates that is more convenient. In addition, each one of us is writing about the siddur in each monthly bulletin.

This month I want to explain the unique layout of the prayerbook. As Rabbi Schwartzman mentioned last month, the prayerbooks of our movement since 1896 have all featured one prayer, right after the other on a page, in a linear fashion. With Mishkan T’fi lah, each prayer takes a full two-page spread, called a folio. Using the accompanying illustration, you can see how it works. Knowing this format will help you feel more comfortable when you use the book for the fi rst time.

The prayer below is one recited in the morning service, Yotzier Or, a prayer about praising God for creating the universe, us, and specifi cally light. The traditional Hebrew text is always on the right side page, illustrated by the #2 bracket. The transliteration of the Hebrew (Hebrew words in English letters) is always next to the Hebrew text. What makes this prayerbook different from others is the editors’ intention to have the rabbi or cantor lead the prayer ONLY in Hebrew OR English, but not both. So if we choose not to read or chant the prayer in Hebrew, we then have three English choices to use. The fi rst choice, just below the Hebrew, on the right side, at position #3 is a faithful translation of the Hebrew text, as close as possible to the literal meaning of the prayer. Or, we could choose one of the alternative English readings on the left side of the page, at position #4. These modern readings or poems on the

left side were put in by the editors for “both metaphor and theological diversity. The choices were informed by the themes of Reform Judaism and life: social justice, feminism, Zionism, distinctiveness, human challenges, etc,” according to editor Rabbi Elyse Frishman. Because of the range of choices in the siddur, the editors hope that great care is taken to make sure the spoken and sung prayers fl ow together in terms of context and mood.

At the conclusion of each of the four choices (Hebrew text and the three English readings) is the fi nal line of the Hebrew prayer, called the Chatimah, or fi nal blessing or “signature” of the prayer. These last few words of every prayer, beginning with the formula “Baruch Atah Adonai,” restates the theme of the prayer. Every brachah has one. In this case, “Praised are You, O God, Creator of light.” If you notice, the Chatimah appears at the end of each of the Hebrew and English readings, illustrated by #6 in the picture below. The editors envision that when the congregation hears, chants or reads the Chatimah, whether at the end of the Hebrew prayer, or following an English reading, the congregant will turn the page and go on to the next prayer.

The new siddur also features running commentary at the bottom of every page (see #5 on both right and left pages) which offers sources of the prayers and sometimes helpful choreography.

Finally, illustrated by #1 on both the top right and left margins, it shows you where this particular prayer is in the order of the service. It’s a great feature that helps us understand the service is divided into large

rubrics, and each prayer has a place within a rubric.

Through this new layout, our new siddur offers us unique opportunities to explore and understand our prayers in a way that adds new dimensions to our worship, perhaps helping you feel more connected to the text, our rituals and traditions.

Please join us on Friday, February 29th, for our next Mishkan T’fi lah service!

Artist/Scholar in Residence Danny Maseng Comes to TRS March 7-9!

Celebrating a Special Birthday Sixty years ago, Temple Rodef Shalom’s Founding Rabbi, Laszlo Berkowits, stepped off a ship onto a pier in New York City. On that day, not long after internment at Auschwitz and with little cash in his pocket, Rabbi Berkowits set out to establish himself in the United States, to build a new life and to begin giving back to the country that welcomed him with open arms. Sixty years later, on February 29th, the Temple Rodef Shalom community will celebrate Rabbi Berkowits’ 80th birthday with a special Shabbat service. Everybody in the Temple community is invited to participate in the worship service and share in a joyous champagne toast to Rabbi Berkowits at the Oneg Shabbat. We hope that one and all will join the clergy and the Berkowits family in honoring this remarkable man. From his earliest days as a Chaplain’s assistant in the United States Army, his cantorial and rabbinical training at Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati, and through each year of his wise and deeply spiritual rabbinate at Temple Rodef Shalom, Rabbi Berkowits has brought peace and joy with his magnifi cent voice and leadership. Laszlo Berkowits is our Temple’s Founding Rabbi. The Temple was his fi rst and only pulpit and a community to which he dedicated his energy and love. From the Temple’s consecration in 1963 to his retirement in 1998, Rabbi Berkowits served as Rabbi, Cantor and inspirational leader. During his rabbinate, the congregation grew from 36 families to 1,000 families. He created a pre-school program that is now one of the largest in Northern Virginia, a program that is a respected local and national model. His vision led to the construction of our current beautiful and welcoming house of worship and his wise and practical leadership made him an outstanding and respected member of communities well beyond our Temple. In the spring, his most recent endeavor, a moving autobiography entitled “The Boy Who Lost His Birthday: A Memoir of Loss, Survival and Triumph” will make its debut at a Temple event. In this publication, Rabbi Berkowits poignantly describes his journey from a child in Derecske to the current day. Rabbi Berkowits’ contributions and successes go well beyond his professional life. A devoted husband, he shared 33 years of marriage with Judith Mitman Berkowits. Together they raised two lovely, accomplished daughters, Julie and Deborah. And so you can see why it is with enormous pleasure that we urge you to join us on February 29th at 8 pm to worship with Laszlo Berkowits and his family and to celebrate this amazing man.

i l

In lieu of gifts, donations to the Rabbi Berkowits Educational Endowment Fund are greatly appreciated, which makes possible an annual Scholar-in-Residence weekend, a project that has long been a passion of Rabbi Berkowits.

Friday, February 8 at 8 pmJazz Shabbat featuringThe Afro-Semitic Experience Join us for a mixture of Jazz and Klezmer Shabbat Music as we welcome the nationally acclaimed musical group: The Afro-Semitic Experience! The Afro-Semitic Experience is a band of African-American and Jewish-American musicians who are dedicated to preserving, promoting and expanding the rich cultural and musical heritage of the Jewish and African Diasporas. They present interpretations of music from the rich traditions of our two cultures: Gospel, Klezmer, Nigunim, Spirituals, Bebop and Swing. In performance they also frame the music, telling stories about what the pieces mean, how they relate to us as individual members of the community, and how they refl ect upon the relations between Blacks and Jews. Since 1997, the co-founders of the group, African-American jazz pianist Warren Byrd, and Jewish-American jazz bassist David Chevan have been presenting a unique musical program that merges their distinct cultures and heritages and delivers a positive and meaningful message about Black-Jewish relations. The Afro-Semitic Experience weaves stories and music together as they interpret and explain pieces from the Jewish and African-American sacred traditions. We welcome the Afro-Semitic Experience as they join with our cantors and rabbis in a unique Shabbat service that you won’t want to miss! This program is sponsored by the Cultural Committee.

We learn from the Book of Proverbs, “Teach your offspring in the way the child ought to

go; the child will not swerve from it even in old age.” We are most appreciative of all our parents and the efforts they make in raising their children as knowledgeable and practicing Jews. It’s not easy balancing our students’ busy schedules while insuring that there is time for Religious School classes, Jewish family celebrations, Hebrew reading homework and family worship. We applaud the effort that our parents make in helping to instill the Jewish values of Torah, worship and acts of loving kindness. I’d like to particularly acknowledge a group of parents whose commitment and involvement is most appreciated, but seldom noted –those parents who are not Jewish but who have chosen to raise their children as Jews. Around 40% of our Religious School students have a non-

Jewish parent. I recognize the conscious and deliberate choice these parents have made in their child’s religious education. It is never an easy decision. It takes a special effort to learn about Jewish living and practice and to make it a part of your family life, particularly when you are of another faith. There is also the real time commitment in Religious School transportation, participation in family programming and encouraging Hebrew reading practice. Our URJ (Union for Reform Judaism) President Eric Yoffi e recently said this about non-Jewish parents in a Jewish home: “… when a [non-Jewish] spouse involves herself in the activities of the synagogue; offers support to the Jewish involvements of husband or wife; attends Jewish worship; and, most important of all, commits to raising Jewish children, he or she is deserving not only of welcome but of our

profound thanks. These spouses are heroes—yes, heroes—of Jewish life. While maintaining some measure of attachment to their own traditions, and sometimes continuing to practice their religion, they take on responsibilities that, by any reasonable calculation, belong to the Jewish spouse. And very often they do all of this without recognition from either their Jewish family or their synagogue. I fi nd it so meaningful when I see our non-Jewish spouses taking part in our school assemblies, family programming, and adult learning opportunities. You are an important part of our Temple Rodef Shalom family. Thank you for all you do.

Nursery School Parent Committee

As the children and parents of TRSNS settled back into their routines after the winter holiday break, it was

back to business for everyone at the school. The Parent Committee kicked off the month of January with

an insightful clergy discussion led by Rabbi Jeff Saxe. The topic discussed was “Raising Our Children

Jewish; Being a Minority in Our Larger Community.” Rabbi Saxe was able to provide our parents with wisdom and

insight on how to raise a confi dent Jewish child while respecting the diversity that exists within our society and

culture. We appreciate the time he was able to spend with our parents on a chilly January morning. The education

series will continue with a talk Dr. Carrie Towbes, PhD on Thursday, February 7 at 7:30pm titled “Discipline

101”.

The school-wide mitzvah project with Bright Beginnings Homeless and Transitional School has been a wonderful

new program that was established by the Parent Committee this year. We received a heartfelt thank-you from the

director and families of Bright Beginnings for the generosity shown by TRSNS families during our winter drive

for clothing and necessary items. We will continue the program this spring with a book drive and participation

in the annual Spring Walk to benefi t Bright Beginnings. In addition, many of the TRSNS teachers have chosen to

make Bright Beginning the benefi ciary of their class tzedakah projects. The Parent Committee is thrilled at the

overwhelming support for this very important program.

Although it is only half way through the school year, we are now accepting applications for 2008-2009. On

January 10, the school held a successful open house for all parents interested in submitting applications for the fall.

If you are a Temple member and you missed the open house but are interested in learning more about the nursery

school program, please contact the school offi ce to obtain information.

TRS Fund for the Community Chair:

Margery [email protected]/463-0633

The Fund for the Community is Temple Rodef Shalom’s grant-

making body, making a difference in the local community by help-

ing non-profi t organizations build capacity to meet critical needs.

When you make a donation to the Fund for the Community, your

contribution has a direct impact on people’s lives. In its fi rst three

years, the Fund has given more than $70,000 to help organiza-

tions meet the needs of local residents in the areas of affordable

housing, education and training, health care and counseling, chil-

dren and families, hunger and our aging population.

In September, Temple Rodef Shalom’s Fund for the Commu-

nity made grants totaling $25,000 to six local community service

organizations. Some 29 non-profi t groups submitted requests for

funding this year; members of the Fund’s board dedicated hun-

dreds of hours to choosing this year’s grantees. The recipients of

this year’s grants meet critical needs in the areas of mental health,

our aging population and children and family services. They are:

Arlington Pediatric Center, Northern Virginia Family Service, The

Child & Family Network Centers, Psychiatric Rehabilitation Ser-

vices, Jewish Council for the Aging and Alzheimer’s Family Day

Center. TRS members are encouraged to support these organiza-

tions in partnership with the Fund for the Community.

A closer look at the 2007 grant recipients: Jewish Council for the Aging The Jewish Council for the Aging helps older people in our

region remain in their homes and maintain their chosen lifestyles

for as long as possible. With programs that provide seniors with

transportation, on-the-job and computer training, employment

assistance and health and wellness counseling, JCA helps more

than 30,000 of our esteemed elders every year. The TRS Fund for

the Community’s grant will allow JCA to study existing programs

and services for seniors in Northern Virginia to help it determine

what needs it might be able to fi ll.

The Fund’s liaison with the JCA is Judy Seiff. To learn more

about how you can help JCA, contact her at jseiff@templerodef-

—deeds of loving kindness—such as

sending messages and tokens of support to,

and coordinating assistance for, members

of the Temple who are going through

milestone life events. This may include,

How can I receive assistance

from the Caring Committee? The Caring Committee organizes

the network of members who support the

clergy’s work by keeping in touch with

congregants through visits or by phone,

providing transportation or emergency

child care, sending notes or greeting cards,

weeding a garden, offering a meal in times of

illness or helping with shopping or errands.

If you have a need, or know of someone

who does, please contact Melissa Sporn,

balance offering assistance while respecting

individuals’ need for privacy.

How can I become part of our Caring Community? An intricate aspect of our being Jewish

is the commandment to perform deeds of

loving kindness. As such, every member

of our congregation is a part of the Caring

Committee that assists our members who

are dealing with diffi cult transitions and

crises which life presents. The Caring

Committee functions through the efforts of

many people. The work of this committee

is truly rewarding -- building friendships

while helping others. There is always the

need for volunteers, and opportunities to

help include brief, one time jobs as well

as more involved roles. Whether your

schedule allows an hour or a day, you will

fi nd that helping others is one of your

more meaningful experiences as part of a

Green Corner

Our Bar and Bat Mitzvahs, weddings, and other celebrations can now go “green” and be “carbon-neutral.” As a community, these and other celebrations are a cause for joy and are meant to be

shared with family, friends, neighbors, and loved ones. But our celebra-tions can also have negative impacts on the environment. In particular, the auto mileage, air travel, hotels, and other activities consume sub-stantial amounts of fossil fuels and emit carbon dioxide into the air. This carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas, contributing to global warming.

So as we celebrate, we also want to be mindful of our impacts on the environment. The concept of repairing the world through social action is one of the traditional categories of tzedakah. Acts of tikkun olam provide us with channels through which we can apply our Jewish response to contemporary issues.

TRS’s Green Team has developed a Carbon Footprint Calculator for these types of events. By using a simple Excel spreadsheet, it helps you estimate the greenhouse gas emissions stemming from your event’s activities, including the air travel, driving distances, and hotel stays. It then directs you to different organizations that you can help by funding emission reduction projects to offset your emissions, effectively making it “carbon-neutral.”

TRS’s fi rst carbon-neutral B’nai Mitzvah took place on November 10, 2007, when Rachel and Nathaniel Sharer took the bema. Their mother, Karen Hendrixson, recalls their motivation to go green: “We were already an environmentally conscious household, but my twins’ environmentalawareness was raised signifi cantly when their sixth-grade science teacher had each student calculate their family’s ecological footprint, including the amount of CO2 emitted annually. The development of the TRS Carbon Footprint Calculator several months later was thus timely, as it enabled us to capitalize on the twins heightened awareness in time for their B’nai Mitzvah.

“The Calculator itself proved to be so simple and straightforward that my twins were actually able to do it themselves, with only some help from me regarding the exact number of guests and the distances that they were traveling. The cost of offsetting the emissions was also highly reasonable, particularly relative to the cost of even a very modest Bar or Bat Mitzvah. Our decision to ‘go carbon-neutral’ was further reinforced by Rabbi Schwartzman’s speech at the B’nai Mitzvah. Her speech focused on the name of their Torah portion -- “Toldot” or generations – and the fact that Toldot does not just signify the generations that came before us, but also refers to the generations that will come after us. In her words – ‘one of the most important roles we can play is the role of being an an-cestor’ because ‘we have an impact on generations to come.’ This speech perfectly exemplifi ed our decision to have a carbon-neutral B’nai Mitzvah so we could pass on a better world for our children and grandchildren.”

The Carbon Footprint Calculator is available on the TRS website. These tools help make the “right thing to do” the “easy thing to do” as well. We encourage all the Bar/Bat Mitzvah kids and their parents to consider going carbon neutral. Do it for your Mother (Earth)!

In the early part of the month, Rabbi Schwartzman will lead an adult trip to Israel. The 12 day excursion will include visits to famous ancient as well as modern sites, it will include experiencing Kibbutz life and also take advantage of the Israel’s spectacular natural wonders.

Over the past 18 years, it has been my great pleasure to lead congregational trips to Israel. First with our youth and later with adults, I have shared in the transfor-mative experience of visiting the homeland of our people, Israel. These trips have been life changing for many of the participants. Traveling in Israel for a Jew is not the same as going to Spain or China. To be in Jerusalem and see King David’s citadel, to visit Jaffa where Jonah’s boat embarked, to visit the grave of Rachel or climb Masada is to connect to our tradition and our ancestors in a way that cannot happen in any other place. Youth and adults alike gain a new perspective on their tradition and their identity during these trips. In the coming year and a half the TRS staff is going to host a number of different travel opportunities. Please accept my invitation to join us on these exciting and life changing Jewish adventures.

During the school winter holiday, Rabbi Saxe will lead a teen trip to Israel. This trip will be catered towards our young people and reflect many of their interests. Students will see the major cities of Israel, landmarks and historical sites. They will stay in Kibbutzim and meet youth from Israel.

LET US KNOW THAT YOU ARE INTERESTED IN ONE OR MORE OF THESE TRIPS. PLEASE SEND AN E-MAIL WITH YOUR NAME

AND THE NAMES OF YOUR FAMILY MEMBERS WHO MIGHT BE TRAVELING WITH YOU TO:

Rabbi Schwartzman will lead a family trip similar to the trip that Cantor Shochet lead this past summer. The itinerary will be designed to meet the needs of both adults and children. While much of the trip will be visiting traditional sites, we will also engage our kids with activities such as playing in an Israeli water park and rafting down the Jordan River.

Cantor Shochet will lead a trip to Israel in the spring that will be open to both adults and older children, or teens. We will visit traditional sights for people who have never been to Israel.

Shavuah Tov: A Good Week

Acrylic Paintings by Jennifer Judelsohn

February 7—March 12, 2008Meet the Artist: Sunday, February 1010:30 AM—1:00 PM

Artist Jennifer Judelsohn will be exhibiting a series of acrylic paintings based on her studies of texts from the Talmud, the Sefer Yetzirah and other sources that relate to the meanings and spiritual connections among the seven days of the week. She was fi rst inspired to create this series after visiting the TRS library and viewing the Jerusalem stone wall and its seven windows. “When I saw the windows I thought, ‘Seven win-dows…seven days of the week.’” Jen-nifer’s work goes beyond the Creation story. Each day has its own energy and relationship to the planets, letters of the alphabet, directions, positive and nega-tive human qualities, sephirot from the Etz Chaim and even parts of the body. This exhibit explores the energy of the days as they lead into and away from Shabbat.

About the Artist:Jennifer Judelsohn is an artist, psycho-therapist, educator and author/illustra-tor of Songs of Creation: Meditations on the Sacred Hebrew Alphabet. She has ex-hibited her artwork in numerous solo and group shows in the Washington, D.C. area and around the country. Her artwork is also in private collections around the world. Recently, Jennifer has been working primarily in acrylic and mixed media. Her work is infl uenced by Jewish spiri-tuality and Jungian psychology. She explores how we individually and col-lectively create our reality through what we think, say and do. Jennifer focuses on manifesting refuah shleimah (com-plete healing) in a tangible form with the hope that her art will be a positive infl uence in the world. Come meet the artist, Jennifer Judelsohn on Sunday, February 10 from 10:30 AM to 1:00 PM just outside the library to view more of her work and to discuss this fascinating exhibit.

Report from TRS member Marc Newman: Taking on Israel’s steep hills to raise money for ALYN HospitalALYN Hospital is a leading rehabilitation hospital in Jerusalem providing comprehensive care for children with disabilities caused by birth defects, accidents and violent terror attacks.

Israeli health insurance covers about 70% of Allyn’s annual budget; the remainder comes from donations. To help close this gap, Allyn launched Wheels of Love, the largest athletic charity event in Israel.

I participated in the Challenge Route of the Alyn Bike Ride October 28- November 1st, 2007. We rode 300 miles and climbed about 21,000 feet, about 2/3 the height of Mt. Everest!

But the challenge we faced is just a metaphor for the challenges faced by kids at ALYN. Here is a link to the website of Ameri-can Friends of ALYN:

Dear Needing to Commemorate,The leap month is added to the Hebrew calendar in 7 of 19 years. The extra ADAR is added before the regular Adar and then the regular Adar becomes Adar II in those years. Adar II is the “real” Adar and therefore that is when Purim is celebrated, when a yahrtzeit occurring in Adar is commemorated and when a child born in Adar becomes a bar/bat mitzvah. In other words, Adar I is the extra Adar.

Rabbi Kolberg of our partner congregation in Israel, K’hilat R’anan in Ra’anana joins us again in worship and study. Rabbi Kolberg will ad-dress the congregation at Erev Shabbat Services on Friday, February 15,

8 PM. The topic of her sermon will be Shmita, Leadership and Social Respon-sibility from Past to Present day Israel. On Saturday, she will be with us for Parallel Shabbat Minyan Services at 10:30 AM followed by pot luck lunch and discussion. Those who attended last February felt Rabbi Kolberg’s warmth and passion as she described the Reform experience in Israel. We look forward to further-ing our understanding as we again engage in prayer and study with Rabbi Kolberg.
