Sundays September 8 Opening Day & Meet the Teacher lunch (11:30) September 15 Regular classes September 22 Regular classes & Grade 7 Field trip September 29 No classes (Erev Rosh Hashanah) Midweek Hebrew Clubs will begin in October, 2019.

The School Calendar and Parent’s Manual is on the Temple Sholom website. Paper copies will also be available on the first day of classes.

First Day: Sunday, September 8, 2019 Welcome to a new year at Temple Sholom School! Please make sure you have completed your enrollment online through your shul cloud account. The school will be open by 9:00am for any parents with questions about their registration. At 9:30am the whole school will meet for our Ruach Rally and Minyan services. Please join us in the Sanctuary.

Beginning at 10:15am in the library, our Sister-hood of Temple Sholom will be hosting a coffee and nosh. Jen and Rabbi Dan will be available to answer any questions about the school or the year ahead.

At 11:30am we will be having a Meet the Teacher pizza lunch in the classrooms. There will be lunch available in each classroom and parents with more than one child in the school are encouraged to go to each class and introduce themselves. Parents are encouraged to attend and then stay and mingle with the other school families.

A Ruach filled start to your day! Each week we will be joining as a school with the Rabbis and Annette, our music specialist. After the Ruach Rally you are welcome to stay and make Minyan a weekly tradition that you can share as a family.

After staying for Minyan, you are invited into the library. There are many opportunities for adults to learn, too! Check out the calendar on the Temple’s website (under Education) for the calendar of events. Or, just stay, have a coffee, and meet a family or two!

Registration for Hebrew Club (Grades 4-6)Hebrew Club begins in October. We are really happy with how many families have already been in touch with Tami. If you haven’t done so, and your child(ren) are in Grades 4-6 please make sure to also register in a Hebrew Club by speaking with Tami Gabay at [email protected]

Consecration On erev Simchat Torah, Sunday October 20th, we will be honouring our new students with a special blessing and service. Join us to welcome our newest members as part of this fun, short service. Dinner begins at 5:45pm and registration is available online or through the temple office.

Grade 7 Cemetery Field Trip (meet at Temple at 9:30 or White Rock at 10:15) Grade 7 students will be visiting the Temple Sholom Cemetery in White Rock on Sunday September 22nd. Parent drivers are needed, and parents are strongly encouraged to attend. This will be a memorable trip to a lovely cemetery, and it is an excellent way to debunk the idea that cemeteries are spooky places. It is also the perfect venue to learn about Jewish customs surrounding death. Our students will participate in the mitzvah of cleaning the headstones. If you have, please bring along a bucket and scrubbing brushes, toothbrushes or cloths.

Think Green Our theme for the year is Think Green. Throughout the school year our students will be learning about the links between Judaism and the environment. They will participate in environment related mitzvah projects and see the theme integrated into their electives as well. Stay tuned for information about Holiday programs and other family opportunities.

Staff Check out our staff board on the bulletin board on the parkade level. There are many returning teachers and also some new faces. They are bringing lots of energy and creativity to the school! A big welcome to our new teachers, and we are also thrilled to have some great new high school students working in the school as Madrichim.

Any questions about the school? Email Jen Jaffe at [email protected]

A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles immerses us in an elegantly drawn era with the story of Count Alexander Rostov. When, in 1922, he is deemed an unrepentant aristocrat by a Bolshevik tribunal, the count is sentenced to house arrest in the Metropol, a grand hotel across the street from the Kremlin. Rostov, an indomitable man of erudition and wit, has never worked a day in his life, and must now live in an attic room while some of the most tumul-tuous decades in Russian history are unfolding out-

side the hotel’s doors. Unexpectedly, his reduced circumstances provide him a doorway into a much larger world of emotional discovery.

Cost: $2.00 per person to cover expenses. RSVP by October 10. To join the group, or for further infor-mation, contact the Co-Coordinators, Iris Dayson or Alisa Streat, through Sisterhood at 604-200-0539 (voice mail) or [email protected]

Temple Sholom is pleased to welcome the Oakridge Montessori Children's Learning Centre to their new home here.

In operation at Oakridge Mall for almost 20 years, the Oakridge Montessori preschool has been a beloved fixture of the Oakridge community, includ-ing the Oakridge Seniors with whom they tended the same garden and cooked soup together. With Oakridge Mall’s recent redevelopment, the preschool needed a new space.

Starting this fall, Temple Sholom will be happily brimming with children. During the weekdays, five of our classrooms will be used by Oakridge Montessori, which will have groups of up to 36 students per session. We will be truly sharing our ecological footprint.

On Sundays, those rooms will continue as the home of our Temple Sholom School, where we proudly expect to welcome more than 150 children this fall.

Oakridge Montessori is completely on board with

our kosher-style practices, has agreed to close on the High Holy Days, and will refrain from using our backyard play-ground during funer-als and other sanctu-ary services.

We have entered into a renewable three-year license with Oakridge. Their financial contribution to Temple will help us to meet our staffing and budget goals, while also providing an opportunity to extend relations beyond our own community. In the unlikely event this arrangement proves to be unworkable, both parties have the option of stopping after the first year.

We have every hope that the Temple and Montessori families will have many happy years together!

Bruchim Habaim - welcome!

TEMPLE SHOLOM WELCOMES OAKRIDGE MONTESSORI

We are very excited to share with you that Cathy Lowenstein has joined the Temple Sholom administrative team as Director of Congregational Engage-ment (DCE) for an initial three-month contract.

Cathy and her husband Jeff are long-time

Temple Sholom members, and Cathy just completed 17 remarkable years as the Head of School at Vancouver Talmud Torah.

Her accomplishments at VTT are vast, leading it to become one of the foremost Jewish Day Schools in North America, and her leadership in the larger community are a source of great communal pride and admiration. Generations of Jewish families have been inspired and transformed by Cathy’s leadership and vision. We are honoured that she has decided to join our Temple Sholom team, bringing her love of Judaism, deep knowledge and experience in the Vancouver Jewish community, and decades of commitment as a member of Tem-

ple Sholom to the sacred work of our congregation.

As Director of Congregational Engagement, Cathy will oversee membership services and our continu-ing efforts to nurture and support our culture of philanthropy. This part-time position is part of the next phase of our planned staffing that began two years ago when we engaged Wendy Soobis for a two-year contract as Director of Strategic Communica-tions and Philanthropy. The DCE is a strategic evolution of that role.

In these initial three months, Cathy and a team of staff and volunteers will focus on membership outreach, communication, retention and philan-thropy, through our Temple Talks initiative (one-on-one conversations with each member household), the Half Shekel Campaign (High Holy Day Appeal), and working to ensure that we embody our Temple Sholom motto of being a place to belong for everyone.

Please join us in welcoming Cathy to our team! She can be reached at: 604.266.7190 or [email protected] .

T E M P L E S H O LO M & T H E J E W I S H F O O D B A N K This month Temple Sholom will once again be distributing the High Holy Day Project Isaiah bags to congregants. Over the holidays (and for a few months more) these bag will be brought back filled with nourishing, non-perishable food items to supplement the perishable eggs, fruits, vegetable, and other items purchased by JWI-BC and JFS for the bi-weekly food banks. Last year the donated food lasted for more than 4 months.

However, long before Project Isaiah, the Rabbi at Temple Sholom made a High Holy Day Appeal to members to fill their grocery bags, one or more, with food from their cupboard or special purchased. The response was unbelievable. There were the odd

tins of spam or pork and beans, (to be given to another food bank) which brought smiles to the volunteers who sorted the food in the parking lot.

At first there were only a couple of volunteer who sorted and packaged the donations, but in time there were entire families from Temple and the community who came together to make it an enjoyable community volunteer event.

Let’s make this year’s Project Isaiah bigger than ever.

For information, call Sara Ciacci 604.325.4810 (JWI-BC) or Marnie Greenwald (JFS) 604.257.5151.

TEMPLE SHOLOM A Canadian Reform congregation that honours and sanctifies each and every person, integrating a deep sense of Jewish tradition with contemporary life.

Kits for Kids is a project of the Sisterhood of Temple Sholom, Women of Reform Judaism.

Since 2009, this social action program has provided hundreds of packs with new, age-appropriate comfort items, clothing, hygiene items, books, toys and school supplies for children from new-borns to high school students staying with a

parent in emergency shelters across the Lower Mainland.

This past year, the project was funded by the Sisterhood, The Edith Lando Charitable Founda-tion, The Al Roadburg Foundation, Winners in the Lansdowne Mall and individual and corporate donors. It was also supported by book funding from the National Council of Jewish Women and item donations from BC Children’s Hospital and Chompers Family Dental. Many suppliers offered extensive discounts to the project, helping stretch our funding even further.

In 2018/2019, Kits for Kids again provided 100 packs to five different shelters across the Lower Mainland. The shelters provide emergency shelter

and services to a cross-section of women and children of various faiths and nationalities, ranging from First Nations to new immigrants to Canada. In August 2019, the packs were delivered; they contained a wider range of items than in previous years, thanks to substantially increased funding from the foundations and community partners that help us. For example, for the first time, the baby packs included two changes of sleepers/onesies instead of just one. Also for the first time, packs for all school-aged children contained a hoodie, a multi-purpose item of clothing that offers warmth as well as comfort and protection from the elements. Finally, school aged children received an expanded range of school supplies, packed in a separate string-carry-pack and added to the backpack.

The response from the shelters is uniformly positive. The children and their mothers are particularly grateful for these donations. Sisterhood is contributing to its mandate of Tikun Olam (Healing the World) with the Kits for Kids project.

We are grateful to our supporters, both financial and in-kind, and thankful to the volunteers who make this project work. And we look forward to another successful year in 2019/2020.

For further information on Kits for Kids, please contact Evelyn Lazare, Chair, Kits for Kids c/o [email protected]. To volunteer or to make a donation, please call the Temple Sholom Office at 604 266-7190.
