Cool versus heat. Clean versus dusty air.
Heat and dust are significant risk factors for modern
electronics. Reliable cooling, therefore, is an immensely
important preventive measure to avoid costly production
downtimes. The inside enclosure temperature is held
constant at the desired level, independently of the ambient
conditions. With carefully separated and well-insulated
internal and external cooling chambers, dust penetration
into the enclosure is eliminated. Rittal has addressed these
common climate control obstacles with its most effective
solution yet!

Cooling output – efficient generation, focused air
circulation.
These units feature even more efficient cooling outputs,
unrestricted installation options, modern analysis methods,
and flexible performance – not to mention long-term
investment value. And all of this adds up to increased
reliability for high-tech electronics and decreased process
downtime – thereby resulting in higher yield and profita-
bility for you.
The number one cause for costly production downtime is an excessive component temperature. The priority, therefore, is to discover and eliminate the hot spots.
Roofmount versions are perfect for every situation. The air intake for the external circuit is always from the front, with the outlets to the sides and rear. An outlet to the top is also possible as a special configu-ration. The internal air circula-tion is targeted and efficient: the warm air is removed cen-trally and the cooled air is sup-plied as necessary at the four corners. An air-ducting system permits targeted distributionof this cooling stream.
Easy installation.Identical installation cut-outs for various output ranges help to safeguard investments and permit easy retrofitting for different coding requirements.
Reduce costs. All three-phase units are suitable for both 400 V/50 Hz and 460 V/60 Hz. No expensive transformers are necessary.
Wallmount designs provide even cooling throughout!A “short-circuit” in the internal air circulation is avoided – even without baffles – due to the distance between air inlet and outlet.

Maximum flexibilityCompletely redesigned interior air circuit. The warm air in the enclosure is removed centrally by the air conditioner. The cold air is then introduced at up to four outlets arranged at the side corners. This optimizes cold air circulation within the enclosure.
Many possibilities for air routingVariable external air circuit. The air intake is at the front of the air conditioners, while the warm air exhausts for the external circuit are to the sides (right and left) and to the rear of the unit. The customer is therefore totally unrestricted in a choice of site or in the decision to mount a series of air conditioners on a bayed enclosure system against the wall. For bayed enclosure suites located against a wall, roofmount air conditioners with warm air exhaust through the top surface are available as a special order.

The sealing gasket is used to screw the quick-change frame to the enclosure, allowing the ready-wired air conditioner to be installed or removed from the quick-change frame from the outside, using quick-release fasteners. This means shorter assembly times and minimum downtime during servicing. In addition, quick-change frames offer effective protec-tion against the ingress of oil in oily atmo-spheres, due to their integrated drainage trough.

Rittal System Climate Control/Air Conditioning Innovations 2002
IntroductionModern production technology has be-come far more powerful since the advent of electronics, particularly microelectronics. However, as electronic components become increasingly miniaturized and the packing density in enclosures and elec-tronic housings increases, these complex systems have become more sensitive to external factors such as dust, oil, humidity and temperature.
This is critical, since the failure of elec-tronic components inevitably leads to the shutdown of entire production lines. The resulting costs can be astronomical.
Heat in particular is the number one enemy of sensitive electronics.
For semi-conductors, for example, a rule of thumb states that for every 18°F/10°C increase in the operating temperature, in relation to the maximum permissible oper-ating temperature, service life is halved. On the other hand, high temperatures are
inevitable in enclosures because the installed drives, transformers, power distri-bution components, programmable logic systems and electronic components dissi-pate heat while in operation. This results in “heat loss.”
The output-dependent temperature fluctuations in an enclosure or electronic housing can also be substantial. These fluctuations cause stress, which in turn leads to faster aging of the electronic components and may cause premature failure.
As mentioned above, correct operation of electronic circuits and the problem-free operation of entire production lines depends substantially on the extent to which the heat occurring in the enclosure is dissipated to the outside.
Whether enclosures are open, i.e. air per-meable, or closed, i.e. air impermeable, has a decisive effect on the type of heat dissipation. Whereas in open enclosures,
the heat can be dissipated via air flow, in closed enclosures, this can only be imple-mented via the enclosure walls.

Basic terms used in calculationIn order to select air conditioner com-ponents correctly, some calculations are required. The following factors play a significant role: Q
.V [watts]: Heat loss of the electronic
components built inside the enclosure. Q
.S [watts]: Thermal output absorbed or
dissipated by the effective surface area of the enclosure (as specified by VDE 0660, part 500). If the interior temperature of the enclosure is higher than the ambient temperature (Ti >Tu),heat is dissipated by the enclosure (Q
.S > 0). If the ambient temperature is
higher than the interior temperature (Ti<Tu), heat is absorbed by the enclo-sure (Q
.S < 0).
 Q.
E [watts]: Required cooling output of an air conditioner; this refers to the ther-mal output which the appliance must dissipate from the enclosure.
 Q.
H [watts]: Required thermal output of an enclosure heater.
Ti [°C]: Maximum permissible interior temperature of the enclosure as pre-scribed by the manufacturers of the electronic components. Generally between + 35 °C and + 45 °C. Tu [°C]: Maximum ambient temperature at which performance of electronic components is not degraded.
 V.
[m3/h]: Required volumetric flow of a filter fan unit.
A [m2]: Effective surface area of the enclosure determined in accordance with DIN 57 660, part 500 or VDE 0660, part 500.
k [W/m2K]: Heat transfer coefficient of enclosure:
 Sheet steel ~ 5.5 W/m2K Plastic ~ 3.5 W/m2K

Enclosure air conditionersPractical tipsIn all situations where optimum operating temperatures are required inside an enclo-sure, even at high external temperatures, a Rittal enclosure air conditioner can provide the right solution. It is even possible to cool the interior temperature of the enclosure to well below the ambient temperature.
The favorable air flow arrangement of the air inlet and outlet openings in the internal and external circuits ensures optimum air circulation inside the enclosure. This sample calculation will show you a quick, time-saving method for calculating a air conditioner.
Please note the following: Where will the enclosure be sited
(dusty or oily air)? What type of installation to
DIN VDE 0660, part 500 is your calculation based on?
What type of ambient temperatures do you anticipate, e.g. ambient tempera-ture and humidity?
What is the heat loss Q v in the enclosure?
What is the required maximum interior temperature of the enclosure Ti ?
What are your protection category requirements to DIN 40 050?
In the case of bayed enclosures, any output radiated by the neighboring enclosures must also be taken into account.
The radiated output e.g. from the environment into the enclosure must be taken into account.
The air conditioners should always be connected via door operated switches in order to prevent excessive conden-sation.
The installation site of the enclosure and the arrangement of the air conditioner must be carefully selected to ensure good ventilation of the external air circuit.
The distance between the units and from the wall should be at least 7.87˝/200 mm.
In order to prevent an air short-circuit in the internal circuit, the air inlets and outlets should not be covered over.
To prevent increased condensation, the enclosure should be well sealed on all sides, including wireways and conduits.
Selecting an air conditionerConsequently, an enclosure air conditioner with a refrigeration output Q
.E = 1063 watts
is required at an ambient temperature Tu = + 50°C and a desired enclosure interior temperature Ti = + 35°C.
Using the performance diagram, we selected an enclosure air conditioner (SK 3305.100) to mount against a wall with a continuous useful cooling capacity of 4250 BTU/1250 watts (see diagram).
Condensation and dehumidification of enclosure air when using air conditionersAn unavoidable side-effect of using air conditioners is the dehumidification of the enclosure’s interior air. As it cools down, part of the humidity contained in the air condenses on the evaporator coil. This condensate must be discharged reliably from the enclosure. The amount of conden-sate occurring depends on relative humid-ity, the air temperature in the enclosure and on the evaporator coil, and the air volume present in the enclosure. The Mollier h-x diagram shows the water content of air depending on its tempera-ture and relative air humidity.
