Sunday, October 4 The Table is Set!

We will participate in this Special Offering on October 4th.

Our session has approved that 25% of the offering we collect will go to The Ladder Alliance, a local non-profit agency who provides women victims of domestic violence or low-income women with the tools to lead self-reliant, independent and successful lives. Meets most Thursdays at 11:30am at church to ponder

the Narrative Lectionary Readings for the week.

Bring your lunch and join in!

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

As you may know, in a called congregational meeting on September 13, the members of Ridglea Presbyterian Church elected to sell the church property. This vote was the culmination of more than two years of careful research, prayerful conversations, and Spirit-led discernment that began when Lincoln Property Company approached the church with an unsolicited purchase offer in June 2013. As we move forward, it’s more important than ever to remember that together, we are the body of Christ, and individually members of it (1 Cor. 12:27). This is a time for all of us to be especially diligent in cultivating the fruits of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Gal. 3:22-23).

Just four days after the congregational vote, the elders of the church met together to pray for the congregation and develop more concrete transition plans. Find below a list of some of the immediate action steps that the session took at its stated meeting on September 17: • Approved a proposed operating budget for calendar year 2016. While there are many important

decisions yet to be made about the future life of the church, mission and ministry must continue. More detail about the proposed 2016 budget will be shared at a called congregational meeting on October 11, 2015, at 12:45 p.m. in Williams Hall.

Expressed an intent to meet with the sessions of Westside and John Knox Presbyterian churches as soon as possible. Now that we know for certain that Ridglea is moving, we need to ascertain whether or not the Holy Spirit is continuing to direct us toward a possible merger.

Authorized Elder Kathy Severson to obtain written proposals for representation from licensed commercial real estate brokers. Should the congregation elect to purchase property, we will likely need professional representation in identifying and securing such property.

Authorized Elder Gordon Ramsey to obtain written proposals from licensed architects. Should the congregation elect to construct a new building or renovate an existing structure, we will likely need professional help in this area.

Authorized Rev. Ryan Baer to obtain written proposals from professional stewardship consultants in anticipation of a possible capital campaign. It is the strong desire of the session that we accomplish this transition without taking on debt, and a professionally organized capital campaign will help us toward this goal.

As always, should you have questions or concerns or just need to vent, please know that we are here to listen and to pray with and for you. May God bless you and keep you. The Session of Ridglea Presbyterian Church

November 1

Is All Saints’ Day in the Church Calendar. This is an opportunity to honor and celebrate those who have gone before us.

If you have someone you wish to be remembered who has passed on to the Church Triumphant in the past year, please email their name to [email protected] by October 26. We will recite church members’ names and print the others in the bulletin insert on All Saints’ Day, November 1st. The time changes on October 31st this year, so after Trick-or-treating, set your clocks BACK one hour. Treat yourself to an extra hour of sleep!

Once again, a limited number of free flu shots will be available through Texas Health Resources Faith Community Nursing Program for those 18 and above. These shots are available to the public, so bring a friend or two!

During this Season of Peace, our thoughts turn to the meaning of peace and how, through Christ, we can nurture it inside ourselves and out in the world. Yet, to understand the value of peace, we must also understand the cost of conflict, and the many forms it can take.

Conflict can be individual: 1 in 4 U.S. students reports being bullied at school. Conflict can be collective: Up to 70% of women experience violence in their lifetimes. Conflict can be domestic: 1 in 3 women has been the victim of violence at the hands of an intimate partner. 1 in 4 children has been physically abused. Conflict can be international: Conflict and political violence are on the rise in 48 countries. Conflict can be historical: Structural racism creates long-term deficits of opportunity. Conflict can be contemporary: Human trafficking and forced labor affect 3 of every 1,000 people in the world

today.

To help address these diverse challenges, the Peace & Global Witness Offering supports a range of ministries de-voted to peacemaking and reconciliation. This includes bearing witness in communities of conflict around the world, hosting education programs to raise awareness, driving local peacemaking efforts, offering catalyst support to our mission co-workers, and much more.

Imagine what a gift it is to those who have been hurt, in both their spirit and their community, to find a lasting peace and resolve conflict in its many forms. When you give to the Peace & Global Witness Offering your true gift is the peace of Christ, for all of God’s children. With each gift, we can begin to create a world of peace—together.

Please give generously by placing in specially marked envelopes or writing “Peace” on the memo line of your check.

“The One who made the water invites us to go deeper.”

~Bob Goff

Presbyterian Women of Ridglea is “Coming to the Waters” this year as the theme of our new bible study states. About 15 women attended the workshop at 1st Pres, FW. We were treated to an informative and entertaining introduction to our study. Three great presenters, the author, Rev. Judy Fletcher, and her two

mentors, Rev. Betsy Pense and Rev. Mona Bailey, gave us helpful tips on teaching each lesson. How exciting to have a truly “Texas” study this year!

Circles are up and meeting! It’s never too late to join in these circles of support. Don’t forget the new Evening group. For more information, call Delaine Godwin at 817-238-8623 or Lynne Payne at 817-782-9451.

Another opportunity to gather is coming on Oct. 17 at Grace Presbytery’s Fall Gathering. We will meet at Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church in Dallas at 10:00 am with a business meeting and lunch at noon ($8.00). Guest Speaker and communion leader will be Rev. Dr. Julie Atkins.

October brings the annual Church Women United Membership drive. Dues are still just $5.00 that go to support many ministries. This month we will also collect the “Thank Offering.” Since 1888, Presbyterian Women have joyfully shared our gifts through this offering so that others may know God’s abundant grace. Thirty-two projects were given grants this year, including twenty two in the US. Just a few were: scholarships to students of low income families in Van, TX; building a dormitory at Christian Nile Theological College in the Sudan; Teaching work skills education in Maryville, TN; providing a furnace fore a homeless shelter in Newton, PA.

Giving to God: Estimate of Giving for 2016

Our session will be presenting a plan for mission at the October Congregational Meeting. You will be asked to take part in this plan by prayerfully committing to the church a portion of what God has given you to manage. Your contributions are a critical part of how we make a difference in our church, our community, and our world. You will receive your Estimate of Giving cards in mid October which we will dedicate on November 8.

Rally Day FUN!

Rally Day was a huge success in the clean

basement. Thank you all who prepared it for us.

We had a dance party on 400 square feet of

bubble wrap to get the party started. This year’s

theme is Keep Dancing. And, do we have some

kiddos that can bust-a-move!

RPC, how will you Keep Dancing?

Messenger Fellowship (2nd—5th graders and friends)

Sunday, Oct. 11th After the (short) congregational meeting, let’s have some fun by

serving, sharing, and laughing! We will stay at RPC. Someone provide a snack for the kiddos? Pick up at 4pm. RSVP mandatory by 8th

Thank you Littles for opening up your home for us to enjoy one last splash for 2015. What a

great group we had to spend our afternoon with giggling, splashing, and a special ‘dip’ for

snack. It is such a gift to see these beautiful faces enjoying community and supporting each

other!

This is a fantastic group of Messengers!
