“The beginning of the good news of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.” -- Mark 1:1

January is often a season of new beginnings, and and at Ridglea Presbyterian Church, we have many new

beginnings to celebrate!

In October, the congregation elected Martin Cleworth, John Godwin, Jerry Rottler, Ivey Ramsey, Marsha

Dueease, Lynne Payne, Megan Register, and Sara Riley as elders in the church. Throughout the late fall,

these women and men underwent a season of study and preparation for undertaking their leadership roles in

the church, and at the 11:00 worship service on January 10, we will ordain and install these elders-elect to

their respective classes on the session. (In a Presbyterian church, the session is the governing board made up

of the elders and the pastors.) This is a wonderful time to celebrate new beginnings in ministry and to

celebrate and remember the promises of baptism!

We are also beginning a new series of sermons from the Gospel According to Mark. From now through

Easter (March 27), we will be following Mark’s gospel in our Sunday worship. We won’t be taking it verse by

verse, but we’ll be hitting some of the major stories and developing the major themes.

If you’re looking for some new winter reading material, I suggest reading through Mark’s gospel. At 16

chapters, it’s the shortest of the four gospels, and Mark writes with a “Reader’s Digest” style that many

readers find appealing.

If you’d like to read ahead in preparation for Sunday worship, find below the readings from Mark that we

will be tackling this winter from the pulpit.

January 3 - Mark 1:1-8

January 10 - Mark 1:9-20

January 17 - Mark 4:1-34

January 24 - Mark 5:21-43

January 31 - Mark 6:1-29

February 7 - Mark 8:27 - 9:8

February 10 (Ash Wednesday) - Mark 9:30-37

February 14 - Mark 10:17-31

February 21 - Mark 10:32-52

February 28 - Mark 12:1-17

March 6 - Mark 12:28-44

March 13 - Mark 13:1-8, 24-37

March 20 (Palm/Passion Sunday) - Mark 11:1-11 and 14:1 - 15:47

March 24 (Maundy Thursday) - Mark 14:22-42

March 25 (Good Friday) - Mark 15:16-39

March 27 (Easter Sunday) - Mark 16:1-8

Happy New Year!

Dear RPC Family,

Merry Christmas! I will miss worshipping with y'all this Christmas Eve, but

have good news to share. I have been called as Associate Pastor of Christian

Education at Pleasant Hill Presbyterian Church in Duluth, GA, a suburb of

Atlanta. My husband Steve and I are settling into our new apartment over the

holidays, and I will be starting my new job in January. From the day of my

baptism, our congregation has truly upheld their baptismal vows to guide and

nurture me by word and deed, with love and prayer, encouraging me to follow

Christ and be a faithful member of Christ's church. It was as a child of this

congregation that I first heard God's call to ministry, and have been accompa-

nied on this journey. Thank you for loving me, teaching me, and encouraging

me along the way.

Joyfully,

Jennie (formerly Smith) Sankey

“Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass. It’s about

learning to dance in the rain..” ~Bhangra We Wish you a merry Christmas! And we did as we sang along with the church preschool class at our December meeting.

How can one not be cheery looking at all those smiling faces singing their hearts out. Good bell ringers too. Our other, much loved, musicians, The Funky Town All Star Bass Quartet, delighted all with a program of Christmas hymns, holiday and show songs. A special treat was a selection written especially for the bases only. All this and a delicious pot luck made a blessed morning. Upcoming Events:

All Circles resume in January as we continue our study of important “water” stories of the bible.

RPC 2nd Annual Women’s Retreat will gather on Feb 20-21 at Still Water Lodge in Glen Rose. Here is a wonderful chance to grow our faith and fellowship

In the coming months the coordinating committee will be discussing possible Honorariums and Life Membership recognition. If you know of a woman in the congregation you would like us to consider, please send a note to PWR. Please include the name and reason you think she should be honored by Jan 15. January calendar:
