A message from the Representative Council of Learners

Hello Readers The RCL just wants to remind the girls again that they must keep their valuable possessions safe and don’t leave them anywhere. Take responsibility for your things and if you do have something valuable, put it in your locker. If something of yours does get stolen, please do report it immediately. C Cogill

An Interact Visit

On 6 August 2010, a few Interact committee and sub-committee members visited Huis Luckhoff and Place of Hope. While there, we handed over the toiletries that were collected in the toiletry drive. We also served cake to the elderly as well as to the mothers at Place of Hope. The toiletries were greatly appreciated. We as the Interact com-mittee would like to say thank you to all those who contributed towards the toiletry drive.

Blood Donor Committee Thanks to the outgoing Blood Donor Committee for all their hard work: Hayley Groom, Desiree van der Scyff and Thando Pahlana. The new Blood Donor Committee is: Head - Kimberley Dale; Deputy Head, Samantha Mar-chant; committee members - Charissa Carter, Lushetha Hermanus and Aneesa Solwa. The next opportunity to donate blood at RGHS will be on 1 December 2010 in the Thompson Hall from 12.30 until 14.00.

Ignition news On Monday 20 September Ignition hosted a movie night pyjama party. This was a fun time to relax with friends after a long term. The girls watched Fireproof in the comfort of blankets, pyjamas and en-joyed hot chocolate and pizza. Fireproof is a romance movie (with tense moments and action) that is applicable to all people of dating age and older. The event ended with a short talk and discussion time led by a guest couple.

General News

Recycling The Earth Children, a society formed for girls who are concerned about the environment, will be taking over the recycling at the school. I have spent many hours over the last 5 years sorting out recycling that some people have just dropped off! It would really help the girls if every-one could put their recycling in the applicable areas. Just a few minutes spent sorting out your recycling can save a lot of time for someone else. You have probably noticed the plastic that has been gathering in the recycling area. This is being collected in Mrs Botha’s Biology class where the Earth Society sorts it out. If you do want to recycle plastic please ask your daughter to drop it off in Mrs Botha’s class.

Please note that we DO NOT RECYCLE TETRAPAK (milk and juice cartons) A special note of thanks to Gwyn Searle who arranged to have Mondi collect 2,6 tons of magazines from her office – she earned the school R780! As I’ve said before, we earn much more money from magazines and white paper than we do for the paper placed in the orange igloos. So it’s really appreciated if these could be kept separate and placed in the bags in the left-hand shed. Thanks once again for your recycling efforts. Irene de Kock

Rustenburg Times

On 21 August 2010, the Rustenburg senior de-bating team flew to Johannesburg for ASDC (the African Schools’ Debating Championships), to compete against schools from all over Africa. The team (of Ameerah Allie, Angeliki Carvounes, Chelsea Kelly and Cara Mazetti Claassen) was managed by Mr van Dyk. An excited team went to St John’s College (the host school) straight from the airport to start the thrilling programme of events immediately. The school has something like 5 houses, all re-quiring fingerprints which we scanned upon arri-val for entry to the dorms and common room. The slogan of ASDC is “Critical Thought For A Critical Future” which set the theme for the entire tournament. We started off with workshops which developed this theme by encouraging better argumentation and also discussing Science and Ethics. We en-gaged in mature, thought-provoking dialogue with prominent, intellectual speakers like Thabo Mbeki, Deputy Chief Justice Dikgang Moseneke of the Constitutional Court and CEO of FNB, Michael Jordaan, amongst others.

The debates, as always, were highly entertaining and stimulating on topics like the Americanisation of African culture and removing critical service workers’ right to strike. We went on multiple edu-cational outings, namely to the Apartheid Mu-seum. Possibly the most poignant moments of this tour to Jo’burg was our visit to Constitutional Hill which made the atrocities of Apartheid much more real and left much of the touring group moved (from the adjudicators visiting with us and members of other teams). Debating definitely goes beyond debates itself as the greatest moments involved the friendships formed and the people we impacted. Debaters from Kenya, Nigeria and Uganda were impressed with the new South Africa and how it has pro-gressed while we met interesting people from other countries and formed “international rela-tions”. We extended our understanding of the world beyond our small corner of Cape Town. We thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity and hope to use what we’ve learnt and apply it to our lives.

A visit to Henry Fagan, the Designer of the Swing Bridge at the V& A Waterfront

On Friday 3 September 2010, we went to visit Henry Fagan, the designer of the Swing Bridge at the Waterfront. We first met with him at his agency in Bree Street Cape Town, where he pre-sented us his plan of the Swing Bridge and told us in depth about the function of the bridge and the purpose that it serves. He also informed us that this bridge is the only kind in the world! After the briefing he handed us each a piece of paper and a pencil on which we were asked to design our own bridge that fulfilled the same purpose as the Swing Bridge. We all came up with many creative and imaginative de-signs which we then presented to him. We then went to the Waterfront to have a look at this bridge, and were all thoroughly impressed as we discovered the many details of the bridge that we were briefed about before. Not only was the bridge opened and closed for us, but we had the most amazing opportunity to climb 4meters down into the ground to the mechanics room be-neath

the bridge. All seven of us squashed into this 1 meter x 2 meter room. There were many inquisi-tive onlookers as our heads suddenly appeared from underground. This outing was incredible as many of us never think twice about something like a bridge, but through this experience and the knowledge that we gained we have truly come to appreciate it. Julia Kabat, D2

Artworks outing: Stephen Inggs On Friday 10 September 2010, we were lucky to attend an Art lecture at Bishops (Diocesan College). Stephen Inggs professional photographer and printmaker and head of UCT’s Michaelis School of Fine Art gave up his time to address us on his work and experiences as an artist working in both disci-plines. His talk was extremely interesting and visually fascinating as he showed us a collection of his works. As a Grade 8, I would strongly encourage all Art and Design learners to sign up and make the most of these Friday afternoon Artworks outings. Thank you for the opportunity. Alex Faber, A4.

Art & Design Society - Badge Competition On Monday 20 September 2010, the Art & Design Society held a badge Competition. All form classes were required to reinvent the conventional badge. Form captains were then required to wear these badges from where they were judged. The winners of the competition will then wear their de-signs until the end of the term. The winners from the competition were: D4, for the badge that showed the most class spirit. C4, for the total reinvention of the badge. B2 & A1, for the most class participation and the incorporation of all the design elements. Thank you to all the Form classes who participated. Julia Kabat Head of the Art & Design Society

Grade Nine: Important Academic Information

Next term, all Grade 9 learners will have to com-plete the Western Cape Education Department’s

diagnostic tests in ENGLISH and MATHMATICS.

We have been notified that testing for our Grade 9 learners will take place on

TUESDAY 12 OCTOBER. The testing has been outsourced by the education department and will, therefore,

be run by externally invigilators. ALL LEARNERS are expected to be present in

order to be tested on this day.

Important Dates and Events for Term Four

Learners are reminded that Term 4 starts on

Monday 04 October 2010. This is Day 6 (Week 2) on the timetable.

Friday 8 October will be a CIVVIES DAY,

at a cost of R10, for our end-of-year thank-you gifts to support staff.

This is our opportunity, as a school community, to thank the grounds and cleaning staff for all

that they do for us during the year. Your support would be greatly appreciated!

Winter/Summer Uniform Changeover

Girls have the option to wear either winter or summer uniform at the start of next term. From Monday 25 October, however, it will be compul-sory for all girls to wear the summer uniform. Parents are advised to use the coming holiday to check that their daughters’ summer dresses still fit and that the hems are lengthened, where neces-sary. Please make new purchases timeously, as stock or certain sizes may not be readily available closer to the compulsory changeover date next term.

The Grade 8 Art students from Ms. Simpson’s

class are to be congratulated for the beautiful clay models of 'Post and Lintel' and 'Arcuated' struc-

tures which they made in class as a practical com-ponent for their theory on Architecture. Our

thanks to Mr. Vosloo for photographing the 'Post and Lintel' structures to create 'Stone Henge at Rustenburg'.

News from the Music Department

Certainly a year to celebrate, what with the ter-centenaries of the invention of the fortepiano by Cristofori and Giovanni Battista Pergolesi, the bicentenaries of Chopin and Schumann, the 150th anniversary of the birth of Gustav Mahler, the 50th birthday of Mark-Anthony Turnage and more, the centenary of the founding of the SACM and the 65th birthday of the South African composer Peter Klatzow. On our home ground, Ms Davis (pictured below) had just announced her intention to retire in De-cember this year after 36 years of teaching, of which, fortunately for us, the past 10 were spent at RGHS. And celebrate we did, at our Annual Music Concert, held in the Kemp Hall on 15 Sep-tember. We were able to showcase the best of our En-sembles, Orchestras, Bands, starting with the String Ensemble who recently achieved an Hon-ours award at the Kaapse Afrikaanse Eisteddfod. The enlarged group of string players, carefully coached by Mrs Raynham performed a lively tango, setting the pace for the Wind and Jazz Bands that followed. Our Wind and Jazz Bands and more recently the Jazz Combo are a tribute to the hard work and passion that Ms Davis has brought to Rustenburg, starting all from scratch and indeed the woodwind and brass tuition. Opening with several move-ments from the delightful Carnival of the Animals by Saint-Saens, the Wind Band certainly impressed, and the Jazz Combo with two new pieces in their repertoire including the Lennon/McCartney Come Together, were enthusiastically received. The challenging Libertango by Piazzolla per-formed by the Jazz Band showed what our musi-

cians are capable of. The Keyboard Ensemble – all seven players on keyboards - was an ear opener with their demanding repertoire including the Ha-banera from Bizet’s Carmen. The Junior Flute En-semble, another new group that has developed this year, is proving to be a useful training ground for our flautists and a good feeder for the Orches-tra and Wind Band. The first half concluded with two lively items from the General Choir, including choreography in the 1930s medley devised by Ms Jamey. Our 21 Grade 12s had a tricky time trying to learn this in one not-so-easy lesson! The second half opened with some solid per-formances from an expanded Orchestra directed by Ms Gordon, including some scary Hans Zimmer music from the film Gladiator. The Re-corder Ensemble offered two new works, one by Hans Ulrich Staeps and a River Song that had us riding the rapids and rowing our boat across a fast moving Berg River. Berocca G presented one item that they will be performing at the National Ensemble Competition on 29 & 30 September from Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater, followed by the Chamber Choir in the lively Amen with a beautiful flute solo from Samantha Filby in the Caccini Ave Maria and a Fever-ish conclusion skilfully choreo-graphed again by Ms Jamey. The evening ended on a rousing note with the Savuyisa Junior and Senior Marimba Bands di-rected by Julia Johnson and Grant Adams respec-tively. EMS

Rustenburg’s Jazz Combo brightens the SACEE awards

The SACEE awards were held in Charlie’s Hope on Wednesday 18 August. The Jazz Combo provided suitable background music as entertainment while the guests arrived. They gave a confident performance which they had to tone down so as not to overpower the guests while they were conversing. All enjoyed their performance greatly. The combo of Gladys Kisela, Yohan Chun, Nicky Cathcart and Cheryl Muchapondwa played some well-known standards such as Honeysuckle Rose and Autumn Leaves, and they accompanied the singers Saskea Jacobs in Stormy Weather and Amy Walton in Cry Me a River.

Berocca G (named after Berocca C, the vitamin booster, with Berocca here, representing Baroque music and G, performed by Girls from Rusten-burg) has been in existence for the past seven years at Rustenburg High School for Girls. It succeeded a very successful String Quartet, which competed regularly in the National Ensem-ble Competition, organised then by Bloemhof Meisies Skool. Berocca G provides Chamber Music opportuni-ties for a variety of advanced instrumentalists and singers at the school, focussing on the perform-ance of mainly repertoire from the Baroque Pe-riod, but not exclusively. A notable achievement in their musical repertoire includes J S Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto no 4 in G major, which they performed at the National Ensemble Compe-tition in 2009.
