UCT Mathematics Day The UCT Mathematics Day is an annual activity for Grade 10 and 11 Mathematics learners and their teachers. Alexa Bessinger and Mrs Cameron attended the event last Saturday afternoon . “A number of culturally and economically di-verse high school pupils throughout Cape town participated in the Maths afternoon. Many mathe-matical concepts, such as statistics and the appli-cation of algebraic equations, were covered. We even related the shape of what used to be the Athlone cooling towers to a mathematical graph known as a hyperpola. I found it interesting meet-ing maths “boffs” from unlikely places. To top it all, we had doughnuts and coke provided for us.” Alexa Bessinger

Harmony Gold Mathematics Olympiad

The Second Round of the 2010 National Har-mony Gold Mathematics Olympiad was written on 18 May. This is a very different difficulty level to Round One and only the very best (top 100 nationally) go through to the Third Round. It is also much harder to score a high percentage than in Round One as is seen by the ratings given to the most successful candidates. Lauren Denny (Grade 9) is to be congratulated on reaching the Third Round in the Junior section (to be written on 8 September) once again, having reached it last year as a Grade 8.

Other candidates to achieve a rating of “Good”: Juniors (“Good” means between 19% and 42%) Grade 8: Ji Yoon Kim ; Abigail Mallows and Anya Muhr Grade 9: Alex Nel ; Natalie Luyt and Haseena Solwa. Seniors ( “Good” means between 30% and 63%) Grade 10: Yohan Chun ; Ye Jin Hur and Hyun Joo Park. Grade 11: Karen Schuster and Nicola Steinhaus. Grade 12: Jennifer de Villiers ; Firdaus Khan ; Laurie Scarborough and Laura Skippers.

All the above achieved the honour of being placed in the top 103 in the Province.

Our debaters have had a very busy schedule this year and they are still at it. Ameerah Allie and Chelsea Kelly together with Adene Daniels and Phaphama Tsolekile of Oaklands High School will participate in the United Nations Debate on Sat-urday, 4 September. It is the first time that Rustenburg and a partner school will debate in this prestigious annual event. The four girls will be advocating the for-eign policy of Germany in the topic Balancing Na-tional Sovereignty and the ‘Responsibility to Protect’. They had to research Germany’s possible ap-proach to this topic and they also had to familiar-ize themselves with the procedure of an United Nations debate leading up to the tabling of an ac-tual Resolution that will be drawn up during an informal caucus.

The debate will take place in the Western Cape Legislature where a provincial winner will be chosen. In the final round a national winner will be selected. The national winning team together with one member of each provin-cial team will attend a session of the United Nations in New York. We wish the four girls all the best and would like to thank the Oaklands educa-tor, Mrs Wouters, for the able manner in which she assisted the team. Mrs Anita Pretorius Debating: United Nations Competition

Inventure SA has been assisting us in setting up an exciting leadership programme which starts in the Grade 8 year and is “stepped-up” annually, build-ing on previous learning, in a carefully planned developmental framework. This programme aims to empower all our girls with the skills and confi-dence to take on leadership roles within the school. The one-day workshop for Grade 8 (Me – Identity and Survival) is designed to include a focus on both personal, team and general leadership develop-ment through a series of dynamic indoor and out-door activities, incorporating both theoretical and practical/ experiential activities.

These processes have been designed to provide maximum learning through personal introspec-tion, group work and participation using challeng-ing games and activities. They are also great fun and serve the added benefit of being an excellent Grade team builder and unifier! As the school is covering the cost of each and every learner, all girls are expected to attend for the full duration of the workshop. We trust that parents will support us in this pro-gramme and share our enthusiasm and excitement at what it has the potential to achieve. Our aim is to impact every girl, equipping her with confi-dence, the courage to lead, and skills that she can take with her when she leaves Rustenburg. Mrs Susan Schnetler

Friday Art and Design outing 20th August The first thing that we noticed about Brett Murray was his ability to make a satirical joke out of nearly everything. From the minute we set foot in his studio we were blown away by his amazing yet simple art works. It was as if our text books had come to life, finally seeing the man behind some of the most famous and criticized works of art in the history of South African art. Mr Murray immediately jumped into an explana-tion of his art works, motivating questions and providing us with booklets of his recent works. The books, which he generously gave us, were filled with political, economic and social state-ments which he clearly, in a new democratic South Africa, needed a lot of guts to make.

After showing us various processes of his work and taking us behind the scenes, he kindly allowed us, to our amazement and utter delight, into his beautiful, artistic home. We were ecstatic to see works that we had only dreamed of seeing; like ‘Black Like Me’, a satirical take on the face of Kentucky Fried Chicken, Colonel Sanders; in which he simply adds an African twist by adding an afro, commenting on the history of Africans in America. A huge thank you to all the art teachers who made this exquisite visit possible. Those of us who were lucky enough to choose the 26th of Au-gust to go on the excursion, were truly inspired. Tessa Collington-O’Malley and Qiniso van Damme

Michaelis Galleries On the 13th of August a group of Grade 10 Vis-ual Art learners visited the U.C.T. Michaelis School of Fine Art to view a dynamic photo-graphic exhibition. “Regeneration 2”, is the second of a very suc-cessful exhibition that features 45 young photog-raphers from around the world whose work ex-plores how they view the world and their sur-rounding. The photographs were not only beautiful; it also made us see how life can be viewed in a variety of ways, showing life through the various photogra-phers’ eyes. We were amazed at how wide the me-dium of photography actually is and what is con-sidered photography. We were stunned at how Photoshop is so widely used and we are still dis-cussing whether this work can be considered pho-tography. There were pieces that appealed to each of us individually and there were some that didn’t, as with your normal fine art. This experience was enriching and very inspiring and we left the exhibition wanting to ex-periment with our cameras.

Art & Design Awards: Report The annual Art and Design Awards were held on Thursday 19 August 2010. The exciting Awards evening was kicked off by a festive art exhibition reflecting the wonderful works from both Design and Visual Art. Characteristically, the works on show reflected the talent and dedication of the

girls taking Design and Visual Art, as well as their unique, creative interpretation and expression of prac-tical projects. The award cere-mony itself was

officially opened by dynamic guest speaker James Webb. James Webb is a contemporary South Afri-can artist working with sound as a medium of ex-pression; and currently included in the Grade 12 Visual Culture Studies curriculum. He encouraged the girls to create relevant cultural products in their art making process - emphasising the fact that they work within a rich cultural environment that could be the source of a range of interesting artworks and design products. We would like to congratulate the girls who were awarded certifi-cates and thank them for their hard work and dedication throughout the year.

Artscape CellC Initiative Five of our Grade 11 Subject Music pupils had the good fortune of spending a day with the Cape Town Opera Company at the Artscape Theatre Centre on Thursday 19 August: Megan Hand, Sara Lambert, Ingrid Pienaar, Hye-In Shin and Amy Walton. They joined a group of about 20 high school female pupils from schools in the Cape Peninsula on a Cell C promotion day, to find out something of how Cape Town Opera functions. Some had the chance of attending a rehearsal, others went backstage to see the extent of the Artscape opera stage and others joined the admini-stration staff, for a day in the Artscape office. All attended a lunchtime concert and were given refreshments and lunch and a lift to and from the Artscape Centre and a free CD. Thank you to Cape Town Opera and Cell C for this useful opportunity.

Personalities of the Month: Kelsey Bloom, A4, and Tracey-Lee Flanders, E‘02

Old Girl News

Tracey-Lee Flanders

Upon matriculating, Tracey-Lee Flanders en-rolled to study Medicine at the University of Stel-lenbosch. It was in her third year of study that she was ap-proached by a model scout and entered, and won, the ‘Face of Stellenbosch’ competition. In 2006 Tracey-Lee used her platform to enter the Miss South Africa pageant, where she was named Sec-ond Princess (third). In 2008 she graduated from medical school and was stationed at Addington Hospital in Durban to complete her internship. It was in this year that she was also invited back to Rustenburg High School for Girls as guest speaker for the year-end awards ceremony, the Celebration of Excellence. Tracey-Lee says that she absolutely loves her job and that, although it is often very challenging, being a doctor is rewarding as it affords her the opportunity to help those in need.

Next year she will return to the Western Cape in order to complete her community service. There-after Tracey-Lee intends to travel, before return-ing to her studies once more by either specialising in Psychiatry or Internal Medicine.

Kelsey
