Estimados feligreses,
En tres semanas a partir de hoy, el 26 de febrero es el miér-
coles de ceniza señalando el comienzo de la Cuaresma. Co-
mencemos a reflexionar sobre cómo nos dedicaremos más
sinceramente a la oración, las obras de penitencia y la limos-
na para preparar nuestra alma para celebrar los misterios
de Pascua.
La Iglesia asigna varias virtudes a cada mes, para que po-
damos centrar nuestra atención cada mes en una nueva
área del desarrollo de nuestra vida espiritual. La virtud
asignada para febrero es la humildad. La perla es la joya de
este mes. La forma en que nace una perla, la única gema
obtenida de un animal, es una notable metáfora espiritual.
Un grano de arena se aloja dentro de la cáscara de la ostra
a medida que tira del agua de mar para alimentarse. El
grano de arena se vuelve irritante que la ostra no puede ex-
pulsar, por lo que recubre el grano con muchas capas de
nácar para aliviar el dolor causado por el grano de arena.
Con el tiempo, estas capas de nácar forman una perla bril-
lante. Cuando la luz brilla a través de esta gema, brilla con
una luz radiante.
La metáfora espiritual de la perla es una lección sobre la
virtud de la humildad. No podemos evitar que los males del
mundo entren en nuestros corazones y causen sufrimiento
real. Si respondemos con muchos años de oración, obras de
penitencia y limosnas, con el tiempo nuestra alma alcanza
una luz radiante. Y la luz es humildad.
En el Evangelio según Mateo que escuchamos cada domin-
go de este año, Nuestro Señor explica: “El reino de los cielos
es como un comerciante que busca perlas finas. Cuando
encuentra una perla de gran precio, va y vende todo lo que
tiene y la compra. ”(Mt. 13: 45-46)
Tenemos la oportunidad de experimentar una Cuaresma
verdaderamente extraordinaria si comenzamos a reflexionar
sobre cómo podemos dedicarnos más sinceramente a la
oración, las penitencias y las limosnas.

Dear Parishioners,
Three weeks from today, February 26 is Ash Wednesday
signaling the beginning of Lent. Let us begin to reflect on
how we will devote ourselves more sincerely to prayer,
works of penance and almsgiving in order to prepare our
soul to celebrate the Easter mysteries.
The Church assigns various virtues to each month, so that
we can turn our attention each month to a new area of the
development of our spiritual life. The virtue assigned to
February is humility. The pearl is the gem of this month.
The way a pearl comes into being, the only gem obtained
from an animal, is a remarkable spiritual metaphor. A
grain of sand becomes lodged within the shell of the oyster
as it pulls in the seawater for nutrition. The grain of sand
becomes an irritant that the oyster cannot expel, so it
coats the grain with many layers of nacre to ease the pain
caused by the grain of sand. In time, these coats of nacre
form a lustrous pearl. When light shines through this gem,
it glows with a radiant light.
The spiritual metaphor of the pearl is a lesson in the virtue
of humility. We cannot help that the evils of the world en-
ter our hearts and cause real suffering. If we respond by
many years of prayer, works of penance and almsgiving
then over time our soul attains a radiant light. And the
light is humility.
In the Gospel according to Matthew that we hear each
Sunday this year Our Lord explains: “The kingdom of heav-
en is like a merchant seeking fine pearls. When he finds a
pearl of great price, he goes and sells all he has and buys
it.” (Mt. 13:45-46)
We have the opportunity to experience a truly extraordinary
Lent if we begin to reflect how can devote ourselves more
sincerely to prayer, works of penance and almsgiving.
