History of the ProjectBy the year 2024, nanotechnology had
evolved as a practical means for gene
therapy and drug induction. Revolutions
in nano-circuitry and artificial intelligence
had led to the creation of miniscule
robots, capable of autonomous operationfrom both pre-programmed and acquired
knowledge. Dr. West applied this
technology to health science by creating
the Nanotech Chronic Illness Treatment
Program. Her creations were self-aware, A.I. (Artificial Intelligence)
nanobots capable of fighting illness at a cellular level. In 2025, the SMT
100 was the first generation of nanobots tested in humans with cancer.
They met with moderate success. In 2027, the technology evolved to its
current prototype, the RX5-E class.
RX5-E “Roxxi”Design: RX – Nanotech humanoid robot
Size: 510 nanometers (510 X 10-9 m)
A.I. Generation: 5 – Self-aware, learning
Class: E – Endotropic combat chassis
Purpose: Chronic illness fighter
On-Board Advisor: S M T 1 0 0
Weaponry: Multi-purpose med blasterProtocol: Injected into people with cancer, this
nanobot is designed to fight cancer and
infections at a cellular level, monitor patient health, and report symptoms
with the aim of helping patients conquer their disease.
Holographic GuidanceHolographic Guidance is provided by an S M T 100 Mentor
Unit. An A.I. chip from this retired nanobot model is
embedded into Roxxi to act as a learned guide andsimulated holographic companion. The advisor is removedfrom view during combat, but will continue to provide audio
suggestions and occasional guidance through a holographicnavigational arrow.8 9

PlateletsIn Re-Mission , platelets will not affect Roxxi’s
movement through the blood stream.
Definition: Platelets are blood cells that help the blood
to clot. They prevent abnormal or excessive bleeding
and hemorrhaging by traveling to the site in the body
that is cut or injured and plugging up the damage.Platelets are produced in the bone marrow.
Red Blood CellsRed blood cells in Re-Mission will slow Roxxi’s
movement through the blood stream if she bumps
into them.
Definition: Red blood cells are produced by stem cells
in the bone marrow. They travel through the blood
stream carrying oxygen throughout the body. Having
low red blood cells is called “anemia” and makes you
feel tired without enough energy from oxygen.
Enemy CharactersBacteriaIn Re-Mission , there are a variety of bacteria
that can harm Roxxi. Some will cling to the
tissue wall and attack Roxxi. Others will fire
projectiles, or leech energy from her wheneverthey make contact.
Definition: Bacteria are one-celled microscopic
organisms that may cause disease. Many bacteria
are harmless, and several are even beneficial. In
immunocompromised patients, however, bacteria
can be quite deadly.
14 15
Brain Tumor Cancer Cell A brain tumor cancer cell in Re-Mission can move
throughout the level and breed subordinate brain
tumor masses. A brain tumor mass can clamp
onto surrounding tissue and fire duplicates of
itself at Roxxi while clamped. Other brain tumor
cells are free-floating and can fire at Roxxi whilein mid-air.
Definition: A brain tumor cancer cell is an abnormal
growth in the brain. It will clone itself and metastasize
(spread) by breaking off, traveling through the body,
and taking up residence at a new site.
Fat Globule
Fat globules are only in the bone marrow and willimpede Roxxi’s movement.
Leukemia CellsIn Re-Mission , leukemia cells stay together in
groups and will divide to increase their numbers.
Most leukemia cells will attack Roxxi when sheapproaches, while some have the ability to hurl
other leukemia cells in her direction. A slightly
larger and faster leukemia cell is more resistant
to Roxxi’s weapons, and will rapidly spawn new
leukemia cells as it moves.
Definition: Leukemia cells are young cells that
proliferate by cloning and cannot stop, crowding out
and killing the normal cells in the bone marrow. They
metastasize (spread) by breaking away, traveling
through the body, and taking up residence at a new site.

10/72
Neuronal ImpulsesIn Re-Mission , neuronal impulses are electrical
impulses that flare up within the brain and spine
due to stress, and are capable of damaging Roxxi.
Some impulses are stationary while others cycle
through patterns of opening and closing. Nerve
impulse flares are sometimes generated betweenneuronal arches. These flares can be lowered
through activation of the proper relax tap.
Definition: Neurons carry electrical signals and
transmit signals to adjacent neurons by secreting
specific chemicals called neuro-transmitters.
Osteosarcoma CellsIn Re-Mission , the osteosarcoma cells move
in groups and tend to attack in pairs. Someosteosarcoma cells hide in the osteoid pools
while others cluster inside bone dome structures.
These types of osteosarcoma cells will damage
Roxxi by throwing volleys of osteoid at her.
Definition: Osteosarcoma cells proliferate by cloning
themselves. They metastasize (spread) by breaking
away, traveling through the body, and taking up
residence at a new site. Osteoblasts are bone-building
cells running out of control. They make a gooey muck
called osteum that, under normal circumstances,
would harden into bone.
Lymphoma CellsIn Re-Mission , lymphoma cells stay together in
colonies and divide quickly. If Roxxi enters their
attack range, the lymphoma cells will dash toward
her, causing injury. Certain lymphoma cells are
more aggressive while others are more resistant
to Roxxi’s chemo attacks.Definition: Lymphoma cells are found in both Hodgkin’s
disease and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. The lymphoma
cells will break off, travel through the body and take up
residence at a new site. They originally come from
lymph nodes.
Mouth SoresIn Re-Mission , mouth sores within the throat
will cause damage to Roxxi if she fails to
avoid them. They also spout out mucus that
can damage Roxxi.
Definition: Mouth sores are an inflammation of the soft
tissues in the mouth.
Mucous Dropsand Mucous SludgeIn Re-Mission , mucous drops and mucous sludge
are fluids expelled by bacterial infections. A
mucous drop is falling mucus that can hit Roxxi,
reducing her energy level. Mucous sludge clings
to the mucous membrane, causing Roxxi damage
if she runs into them.

Heads Up Display (HUD)Tactical View ScreenVIEW: The view of the world is a computer-generated approximation
of the inside of the patient’s body—the surroundings, cells, and
body chemistry. The view is exaggerated to easily identify enemy
cells and medicines.
RadarThe radar in the upper left part of the
screen displays an overhead scan of
the local region of the body based on
sensor readings.
current position and facing
cancer or bacteria cells
ammo or communication taps
Stool Jag A stool jag is a hardened stool pile resembling
a jagged, stalagmite-shaped protrusion rising
from the stool in the colon. The stool jags are
able to puncture the lining of the colon allowing
for a bacterial infection. Broken fragments from
the destruction of the stool jag can injure Roxxiand cause stool to adhere to her armor, slowing
her down.
Definition: A stool jag is a jagged, sharp,
rock-like chunk of the stool.
Reed-Sternberg CellIn Re-Mission , Reed-Sternberg cells are
frequently surrounded by a shield of dead T cells,
making it difficult for Roxxi to get a clear shot. The dead T cells need to be destroyed first before
Roxxi can harm the Reed-Sternberg cell. The
Reed-Sternberg cell can also throw dead T cells
or protoplasm at Roxxi.
Definition: A Reed-Sternberg cell is an abnormal type
of cell found only in Hodgkin’s disease (but never in
non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma). It metastasizes by breaking
away, traveling through the body, and taking up
residence at a new site.

Patient StatsThe gauge in the top
right corner of the screen
represents a patient’s
stats relevant to the
current mission.
BPM PULSE METER:
The patient’s heart-rate is
measured in beats per
minute (bpm). Stress, anxiety,
and nausea all impact the
heart-rate.
FEVER METER: This meter
reflects the patient’s
temperature in infection
missions. Spreading
bacteria will increase
the fever. When the fever
spikes, the mission fails.
NAUSEA METER: This meter
shows how close the patient
is to vomiting. As nausea
is controlled, the meter will
go down.
Navigation ArrowThis arrow points to the nearest objective if it is off
the radar. The arrow’s color will vary depending on
the type of objective. For example, red for a group of
enemies, and yellow for a communication tap (see
“Communication Taps” on page 24).
Energy LevelThe meter in the lower
left corner of the
screen represents
Roxxi’s energy level.
ENERGY METER: The Energy Meter is used to gauge
Roxxi’s energy level. If the energy meter is depleted,
Roxxi will power down and will be unable to continue
with her mission.
DEFENSE SHIELD METER: When the Defensive
Shield is activated, the Defense Shield Meter
surrounds the Energy Meter with a glowing greenfield. The glowing green field will drop in level as
it absorbs hits from the enemy.

Power-UpsENERGY POWER-UPS: Roxxi’s energy is restored
by absorbing some of the nutrients from the
patient’s dietary intake.When a patient eats, more
energy is available. These power-ups can vary in
size, giving Roxxi different amounts of energy.
AMMO POWER-UPS: Refills Roxxi’s weapon.
These power-ups can also vary in size, giving
Roxxi different amounts of ammo.
ROCKET POWER-UPS: Arms Roxxi with eitherChemo or Antibiotic Rockets. Use the “Alternate
Weapon” command to toggle between Rockets
and Roxxi’s basic weapon.
DEFENSIVE SHIELD POWER-UPS: Pick up this
item to activate the Defensive Shield. It will give
Roxxi a boost of energy which creates a
Defensive Shield that can absorb damage.
Med LevelsThe icon in the lower right corner
of the screen represents the
available medicines. These meds
are the ammunition for Roxxi’s
multi-purpose blaster. There are
a variety of med types, eachassociated with a different trigger
button. By default these are Fire
Weapon 1 and Fire Weapon 2.
CHEMO BLASTER: This is your available chemo blaster
ammo. This is the very first type of ammo Roxxi will have
available to her in the game.
Chemo Ammunition = Fire Weapon 1 to Fire
BACTO BLASTER: This is your available antibiotic ammo.
Some missions require two types of ammo. If two types of
ammo are used, the second fire button will become
available for use.
Antibiotic Ammunition = Fire Weapon 2 to Fire
ROCKETS: Some weapons have rocket-like projectiles that
pack a bigger punch and explode on impact, damaging
nearby targets. To access these, when available, press the
Alternate Weapon button. Press the Alternate Weapon button
again to toggle them off.

RELAX TAP: This tap advises the patient to relax to manage
nausea, anxiety, or pain. This, in turn, makes it easier for
Roxxi to travel through the body.
RADIATION TAP: Activating this tap calls for a radiation
beam in the immediate vicinity.
The RX5-E can be equipped for radiation therapy. Roxxi’ssmall size and unique perspective make her a perfect
partner in targeting tumors and individual cells with
radiation. The task requires coordination with doctors on
the outside using communication taps planted specifically
to call for a radiation beam.
Communication TapsRoxxi transmits and receives information with the outside world through
microscopic relay devices strategically planted in the patient called
communication taps. These taps have a wireless connection to a PDA
(Personal Digital Assistant) carried by the patient or doctor. Each tap
serves a unique function. Taps surrounded by enemy cells cannot be
activated until the surrounding cells are destroyed.
MED TAP: This tap reminds a patient to take
medication, such as chemo and antibiotics, and
generates ammo for Roxxi.
ENERGY TAP: This tap requests that the patient eat food,
which provides energy for Roxxi.

OptionsUpdatesThe Updates options are available by going to Main Menu/Options/Updates.
Occasionally HopeLab may update Re-Mission with new features. If you
are connected to the Internet, you can check for updates anytime by
going to the Updates screen and selecting “Check Now.” If you wantthe game to automatically check for updates, turn on the auto update
feature by un-checking “Disable Auto Checking.”The program will
automatically check for updates the first time you enter the Main Menu.
If your computer is not connected to the Internet, Re-Mission will skip
this feature.
System SettingsThe System Settings options are available by going to the Main
Menu/Options/System Settings.
The System Settings turn features on and off that demand a lot of the
computer processor’s power. If you have a fast computer, you may turn
features on for added effects during a mission. If you have an older,
slower computer, we recommend turning most or all of these features
off. Re-Mission will pre-set the system settings to what is most
appropriate for your computer during the install. Adjustments can be
made by selecting the appropriate check boxes, or moving the slide
buttons left and right. The following is a list of these features:
Detail DistanceThis setting adjusts how much detail will be seen at a certain distance.
A low setting will give you less detail as you move away from objects.
A high setting will maintain more details as you move away from objects.
Fog Distance
This setting adjusts how far the fog is displayed in the distance. A low
setting will produce fog closer to Roxxi and obscure objects in the
distance. A high setting will produce fog farther away from Roxxi,
allowing the user to see more objects in the distance.
28 29
CHEMOKINE: This chemical is used to generate an immune
response from white blood cells.
RADIATION GUN: This weapon fires a stream of radiation.
RADIATION BEAM: These beams of radiation reload Roxxi’s
Radiation Gun when she flies into them, and also destroy
enemy cells. They are active only for a short time, but can be
reactivated with the radiation tap.
Re-EquippingWEAPON UPGRADE PLATFORM: The RX5-E can be
re-equipped during a mission using a weapons platform.
This may replace the weapon, supply chemo packs, or
perform an upgrade.
WEAPON UPGRADES: Upgraded weapons provide faster or
more powerful applications of medicines. Both the blaster
and rockets can be upgraded.

Show Costly Textures
This setting adjusts how much texture detail is displayed in the mission’s
background. Unchecking this feature will turn off background textures
only on missions that demand a lot of computer power. Checking this
feature will turn on background textures for these specific levels.
Enable Dynamic Lighting
This setting adjusts the light reflection off of Roxxi and other objects.Unchecking this feature will turn off the reflective lighting. Checking this
feature will turn on the reflective lighting.
Allow High Detail Textures
This feature is similar to “Show Costly Textures” except it will adjust
the background textures in all missions not covered by “Show Costly
Textures.”Although these missions are not as demanding on the
computer, if you find that the computer’s performance is slow we
recommend unchecking this feature.
Enable Damage Marks
This feature displays damage on the walls when Roxxi fires and hits
them. Checking this feature will turn the feature on. Unchecking the
feature will turn it off.
Note: Selecting System Settings of Low, Default, or High is a quick way
of turning everything off, setting defaults, or turning everything on.
Game Difficulty
The Difficulty options are available by going to Main Menu/Options/ Game Difficulty.
Easy: Roxxi can sustain more damage before affecting her health meter,
and the enemy can be more easily destroyed.

If all available configurations are in use, you will be prompted to delete
an existing configuration before continuing. To delete one of the
personalized configurations, select it and left-click the DELETE button.
NOTE: Control inputs can also be changed during a mission by pressing
the pause key and selecting Options/Controller/Player 1 or 2 from the
Pause Menu.
Controller—More OptionsIn the Controller Config screen, select “More Options” in the lower right.
The available options are:
Mouse Sensitivity
This feature determines how quickly Roxxi will turn left/right and look
up/down on the screen in relation to mouse movement. For example,
at a low setting, Roxxi will turn very little on the screen with a lot of
movement from the mouse. At a high setting, Roxxi will turn a lot on thescreen with little movement from the mouse. Select a sensitivity you are
most comfortable with.
Auto-Target Strength
This feature determines the sensitivity of the auto target reticule
(crosshairs). At a low setting, the crosshairs need to be aiming close
to or on the enemy for the auto target reticule to lock in. At a high
setting, the crosshairs can be aiming to the left or right of the enemy
and the reticule will jump to the target. At higher settings, the auto
target will jump from target to target more often, making it easier toplay the mission. The auto target strength does not increase the
targeting distance, only the side-to-side sensitivity.
Controller Available default controls are listed on the right side of the Controller
Config screen. Go to Main Menu/Options/Controller and choose Player 1
or 2. Then select one of the following controls:
Mouse+KeysThis is the default controller which uses both the mouse and keyboard
to control Roxxi within the game.
Joypad
Re-Mission supports Sony® PlayStation® DUALSHOCK ®2 Analog
controllers using Kiky X Series USB Adapters by Soyo. The controllers
connect to the PC through the USB ports with the adapters. Other third
party controllers and adapters will function, but may behave differently.
Joystick
Re-Mission supports joysticks connected to the USB ports. All Roxxi’s
moves are supported if there are sufficient buttons available. The hatswitch at the top of the joystick is supported if your model has this
feature. If your joystick model does not have sufficient buttons for all
of Roxxi’s moves, some inputs can be assigned to the keyboard.
Joypad B and Joystick B
Since the joypad and joystick are connected through the USB ports,
these devices will be assigned in a specific order by your computer.
If only one joypad or joystick is connected, selecting Joypad A or
Joystick A should address the proper device. However, if two devices
are connected, then one will be the first device and the other will be the
second device. For example, if you have two joysticks attached, then
Player 1 should be assigned to Joystick A and Player 2 to Joystick B.
Modifying and Saving the Controller InputsTo create your own personalized configurations, go to Main Menu/
Options/Controller and choose Player 1 or 2. On the right, select the
configuration you wish to modify. The commands for that controller will
be displayed in the left window. Select the command to modify and an
input window will appear. Activate the button, key, or move the joystick to assign the new input. After completing all of the changes, left-click
SAVE. The new configuration will be saved and renamed automatically.

CheatsThe cheat options are available by going to Main Menu/Options/Cheats.
FULL MAP: Makes all States with Patients available. (Not available for
selection during game play.)
INVULNERABILITY: Makes Roxxi invincible against enemy attacks.
UNLIMITED AMMO: Gives Roxxi unlimited ammo for any weapon she
is using.
Note: We do not recommend using cheats during the tutorial since part
of the training requires Roxxi to replenish ammo and restore her health.
Pause Any time during gameplay, the Pause key or ESC key can be pressed to
bring up the Pause screen. At the top of the screen is a list of objectives.
They will be checked as each task is completed. At the bottom of thescreen are the following four selections:
Options: Same Options available from the main menu. See
descriptions above.
Restart Mission: Will restart the mission from the very beginning.
End Mission: Ends the mission and goes back to the Patient
Location screen.
Return to Mission: Continues the mission (or press the Pause
key again).
Invert Y Axis
This feature will reverse the Move Up and Move Down controls. If you
prefer to have Roxxi move up and down like the controls in a flight
simulator, then check-mark this feature.
Look Up/Down While Moving Up/Down
This feature combines the Look Up/Down with the Moving Up/Down.
When Roxxi moves up she will also pitch upward. When Roxxi movesdown she will also pitch downward.
Accel Along Look
This feature will move Roxxi forward in the direction she is looking.
If Roxxi is looking up while going forward she will also move
upward. If Roxxi is looking down while going forward she will also
move downward. This feature is most useful when using the forward
(accelerate) key while moving the mouse up and down.
Smooth MouseThis feature will smooth out quick movements of the mouse so they
are less erratic. This helps make aiming and controlling the target
reticule easier.
Controller Vibration
This feature is for the Sony® PlayStation® DUALSHOCK ®2 controller.
When checked, the controller will vibrate each time Roxxi is hit by the
enemy or enemy fire.

Credits2-Player ModeThe 2-Player Mode is available from the Main Menu and allows two
people to play together in competitive mode. Player 1 uses the keyboard
and mouse, while Player 2 uses either a joypad or joystick plugged into
the USB port. Other control configurations may be used, but only Player
1 can use the keyboard and mouse.
2-Player Setup ScreenLeft-click on the arrows to select each player’s character, color, and
difficulty level. The “Control” selection will take each player to their
Controller Config screen.
Playing the Game After configuring both players, select START. Then choose either
Bacto Bloodstream Run or Leukemia Luge. The 2-Player games
are competitive. The first player to collect six stars or finish withthe highest score wins.
Strategies:
• Shoot oncoming enemies to gain points.
• Gain extra points by picking up point bubbles.
• Get double score for collecting your opponent’s bubbles.
• Get an extra star for every 15,000 points.
• Pick up special items to get an advantage over your opponent.
x2 Multiplier – Doubles the values of all points received.
Score Magnet – Attracts point bubbles to the player.
Rockets – Arms the player with rockets.
