Finally, I would like to wish nothing but the best to some members of our Redvers Staff who are

retiring or moving on to new opportunities next fall. To Mrs. Boutin and Mr. Sukut, thank-you for

the countless hours you have put into the teaching profession. It has been wonderful to hear

how the efforts of your career have impacted numerous students, teachers and community

members. I wish you nothing but great things in your retirements. To Miss Brown, we will cer-

tainly miss your caring attitude and big smile every day. You have had a great impact on many

people and as a school we will miss the contributions you have made to make this a great place

for students. We are sorry to lose you but happy that you will be closer to your family. To Mrs.

Cameron, thanks so much for bringing your talent to Kindergarten and Elementary Phys. Ed. this

year. Thanks for the dedication you show to your profession and to the students.

It has been a pleasure working with the staff and students of Redvers School. I hope everyone

has a wonderful and relaxing summer. See you in the fall!

What is kindergarten readiness?

You know your child best. Think about what your child is like when playing with others

and when alone in their room. Then ask yourself the following:

1) Can my child listen to instructions and then follow them? Children need these skills to function

in class, to keep up with the teacher and with their peers.

2) Can my child put on their coat and go to the bathroom by himself? Children need to be some-

what self-sufficient by school age.

3) Can my child use scissors, hold a crayon or a pencil or pick up small objects or manipulate piec-

es to complete a puzzle? Children will need these fine motor skills.

4) Does my child show an interest in books? Do they try to "read" a book by telling a story based

on the pictures? This is a sign that their language development is on a par with other kinder-

gartners.

5) Is my child curious and receptive to learning new things? If a child's curiosity is stronger than

their fear of the unfamiliar, they will do well in school.

6) Does my child get along well with other kids? Does my child share and know how to take turns?

Your child will be interacting with other children all day, so your child's social skills are particu-

larly important for success in school.

7) Can my child work together with others as part of a group? The ability to put their needs sec-

ond, to compromise and join in a consensus with other children, is also part of emotional compe-

tence.

If you answered "yes" to most of these questions and "sometimes" to the rest, your child is ready

for kindergarten.

If you child will be turning 5 in 2017, please contact the school in your area for information on

registration.

Dear Educator,

Summer break is quickly approaching! A time for relaxation and rejuvenation! However, for many

students, summer break means the "summer slide" — the loss of learning and reading skills that

occurs when away from school. We know from research and experience that the impact of

"summer reading loss" on students in general, and for at-risk students in particular, is significant.

The antidote for this problem — SUMMER READING! Children and teens who read just four or

more books over summer break have a good shot at avoiding "summer reading loss." Rather than

backsliding, daily reading helps children solidify the gains they've made all year.

Try some of these research-proven summer reading strategies and let Scholastic help you re-

verse the summer reading slide.

Introduce Students to Potential Summer Reads In June, instead of reading aloud from a single

book, introduce students to three or four different texts each day. Over the course of a month,

you will have highlighted over 60 titles that may spur on summer readers. Also prepare students

for summer reading by reviewing comprehension strategies such as predicting, making connec-

tions and summarizing.

Gain Parental Support: Did you know that only 31% of parents have heard of the summer slide?

Raising parents' awareness of the importance of summer reading is critical, and providing them

with guidance and suggestions as to how to support their children has a positive effect on read-

ing. This Parent Letter outlines why summer reading is integral to children's continued learning

and provides five easy ways parents can support their kids. You can also include these Summer

Reading Tips.

Provide Students with Texts They Want to Read: Whether you distribute older books from your

school library, open your school collections to summer borrowing, or purchase books for students

to take home for the summer, ensure that students have access to a variety of texts (fiction and

non-fiction) that engage them. Check out Scholastic's Summer Reading List for books that kids

love to read.

Join the Summer Reading Challenge! Students can join the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge

where they can log their reading minutes to unlock weekly activities, and have a chance to win

150 books for their school library. Teachers and Parents can access free summer reading re-

sources including book lists for all ages in English and French.

Have a great summer!

It's no secret that preschoolers have a ton of energy. A preschooler seated in a car seat for longer than 20 minutes at a time is usu-ally long enough to make you rethink road trips altogether. So how do you keep a young child's attention? Try interactive, short, easy and fast-paced car games — and change it up frequently!

Car games and activities for toddlers, preschoolers and younger children

Draw it: Call out letters, numbers, animals and places, but instead of dealing with messy markers, use a Magna Doodle.

Nursery rhymes and songs: Brush up on your nursery rhymes and toddler songs! Little ones love to sing their favorite tunes from preschool and playgroups.

I Spy: Before you embark on your road trip, strategically place large, colorful items around your car and within your child's view from his or her car seat.

Puzzles: Provide wooden puzzles for your little one. Storing them in zip lock bags helps to keep all the pieces together. Be sure the pieces are large enough to not be a choking hazard.

Car games and activities for older children

Older children enjoy learning new things, being active and being creative — even while in the car.

I Spy: Challenge your kids with a game of I Spy while on the move.

Alphabet game: Encourage your kids to explore their surroundings to find the letters of the alphabet on road signs, license plates and other signage visible from the road.

License plates: Make a list of the provinces of Canada and silently check off each one as you see a matching license plate. Then set a number and the first person to reach that number wins.

Name that tune: Make a playlist of your family's favorite songs and ask your kids to guess the name of the song and the artist.

Finish the song: After guessing the name of the song and the artist's name, stop the music to see if your kids can finish the rest of the song on their own.

Books and magazines: Be sure to bring a good book, comics and/or child friendly magazines.

Word and number books: Word search, crossword puzzles and Sudoku books can occupy children for kilometres. So be sure to bring a variety.

Make a travel kit.

Here are some ideas of budget-friendly items to add to your kit:

Allow your child to help choose what kind of items go into the tote bag. However, be sure that your child does not decide eve-rything, because the element of surprise will keep your child from getting bored.

Bring snacks for on the trip. Choose healthy snacks, low in sugar, which are easy to pack such as: fresh fruit and vegetables, cheese, multigrain crackers, nuts and pretzels.

Include Post-it sticky notes, stencils and stickers in your child's tote. Your child will love writing messages and drawing on them, and then he or she can stick them on the windows and create an art display.

Don’t forget the crayons and pencils.

Wrap all new items in the tote bag in recycled gift wrap or construction paper. Give your child a new surprise every so often to

keep them from getting bored.

Kindergarten Spring Literacy Evening

On May 24, several kindergarten families participated in our Spring Family Literacy

Evening at the school. Parents attended a short, informative presentation by Ms.

Bue. The focus was on the benefits of playing games with your children. Mean-

while, the children played in the classrooms with Mrs. Berry, Ms. Kay and Mrs. Bou-

tin. Afterwards, families played a variety of games together and enjoyed the cookies

made by Mr. Ulmer’s commercial cooking and one of his PAA classes. Students took

home a Snakes & Ladders game. Thank you to all the families who were able to

attend and to the staff who helped
