MATARIKI AT MATAHUI SCHOOL Yesterday, Matahui School celebrated a significant and important event in the Maori calendar – Matariki, (which literally means “the eyes of god” (mata ariki) or “little eyes” (matariki), the name given to the cluster of stars also known as the Pleiades. It rises in mid-winter and for many Māori, it signals the beginning of a new year. A special feature and ancient tradition associated with Matariki celebrations has been the flying of kites which were seen as a direct connection between heaven and earth as they flutter close to the stars. So, kite flying was an integral part of our day. With the guidance of “Kite man” John Russell and his “apprentice” John Anderson and the support of the staff and parents, Lynley, Dave, Martin, Shirley, Min, Christine Paris, Sarah Cooper and Helen, the students created and made delightful small kites that they were able to fly in the sun after lunch. Tawhirimatea provided gentle gusts of wind, enough so that the kites did reach toward the stars. Prior to flying the kites Gina and Aunty Rose did an incredible job of preparing our community kai which we were able to share. The table of food was a work of culinary art. A treat for the eyes and the tummy. Awesome. We plan to plant seven kowhai trees in a grove to represent the Matariki stars. Moreover, they will stand as a symbolic reference to the students. They, like the trees draw spiritual and personal nourishment from standing as the tangata whenua of Matahui School. Seven rocks will be placed amidst the grove to symbolise the strength, resilience and physical connection we have to Matahui School. Within this grove we will also “plant” the New Year’s wishes many of the students drafted as part of the celebration. Our thanks to everyone who helped make this day so special – our kite helpers, our cooks and bakers, the staff and the students who all embraced the significance of this day. COMMUNITY MEETING 25 JUNE 2018 Many thanks to all who attended the Community Meeting on Monday evening, and to Sam who arranged some awesomely delicious cheese platters to accompany the wine. Topics covered were:

- The premiere showing of “The Wrath of Trish… and how to avoid it” powtoon

animation, explaining about the school’s different bank accounts that you should use for

paying (a) fees, bus levy & voluntary donation; (b) school trips and camps; and (c) parent-

led fundraising such as the ball. For those that missed it, details will be in the newsletter

and (hopefully) a link to the powtoon animation on the website;

- An update on the Marketing team’s progress, with Sharlene having co-ordinated

submissions to several local publications. If you’re in the circulation area for the

Omokoroa Omelette or the Lizard, please let us know what you think!

- The launch of the school’s Give-A-Little page, developed by Darren. This is targeted at

alumni and intended to fund scholarships to assist current families; and

- An in-depth discussion on the merits of Gina’s favourite cheese and the different wines

on offer, along with a more general sharing of ideas.

Please take note!! Further information will be circulated about payments into the correct bank accounts, prior to next due date for fees of 20 July. Also, the Marketing team is looking to refresh the testimonials that are currently used on the website and in the school’s marketing materials. Look out!!!... more to follow on this! Here’s what the community group thought of the meeting:
