In this class, the students are exploring the world of work. They have been working on a set of activities in an on-line program

called myBlueprint, which allows the students to take surveys about their interests and aptitudes, to explore many different

possible careers, to keep track of their achievements and awards, and to save samples of their school work and personal

work that they wish to. In later grades, they will be using this program to track their high school credits and to further refine

their plans for the future. The most recent activity that the Grade 7 students have worked on was to make oral recordings

about their preferred styles of learning and to save these recordings in myBlueprint. They will soon be starting an assign-

ment where they need to select three possible careers and compare those careers in terms of the education and training re-

quired, the work conditions in those careers, what the future prospects are for employment in that field, and what sort of

salaries or wages are expected for people working in those fields.

GRADE 7 HEALTH On Monday, November 27th, our Grade 7 class hosted a guest speaker for Health class. Ms. Jenna Toms came to ad-

dress the class about eating disorders. Jenna’s talk focused on her personal experiences as a teen and young woman

with an eating disorder. She shared with the class how she came to develop the disorder, what it was doing to her men-

tally and physically and how she has overcome the disorder. It was a very engaging presentation, with the students

asking many insightful and interesting questions. We are now moving into the topic of First Aid in class. The students

have started their first assignment, where they are creating comic books with a theme of “First Aid to the Rescue”. The

stories being written and illustrated are coming along very nicely!~

GRADE 8 HEALTH

The students in 8th grade are exploring the topic of “Body Image” in Health. The most recent assignment was for each

student to find examples of advertisements from television, video games, magazines, billboards, movies and the internet

that use certain body images to sell their products. We are exploring the impacts of these images on young people in

terms of both physical and mental health. We are also identifying the messages associated with such advertisements.

When the students have completed their research, they will be reporting their findings to their classmates through a

multimedia presentation.

GRADE 9 HEALTH

The students in Grade 9 are just wrapping up projects about sexually transmitted infections (STI’s). They worked in groups to

prepare and then deliver a presentation about this topic to their classmates. Each group of students was given a separate STI to

report on. The students used a multimedia presentation software to build and present their reports. The project was a real eye

-opener for the students in many ways. Overall, the students have done an excellent job of reviewing the various STI’s they

have researched, and the class have received a collection of well-performed presentations on the topic.

The Redvers Senior Boys Volleyball had a surprising season that culminated in a trip to the SHSAA 3A Provin-

cial Volleyball Championships in Kipling/Whitewood. Although the team was less than successful at the

Championship, the fact that they advanced was unexpected. This bodes well for the team in the future as

there are a lot of good, young players in Redvers School. Throughout the year the team participated in tour-

naments in Rocanvile, Carnduff, Estevan, and Weyburn. At Conferences, the team defeated a strong Oxbow

team to advance to Regionals. At Regionals, the team defeated Vibank in order to advance to Provincials.

The team included:

Noah Aime (Grade 12), Dakota Rue ( Grade 12), Braeden Magotiaux (Grade 12, from Bellegarde), Trevor Du-

maine (Grade 11, from Bellegarde), Ryan Aulie (Grade 11), Austin Dufresne (Grade 11, Team Captain), Josh

Duncan (Grade 11), Kameron Martin (Grade 10), Oliver Poirier (Grade 10, younger Team Captain), Evan James

(Grade 10), Merrick Sanborn (Grade 10), Isaiah Jacobson (Grade 10), Jon Ulmer (Grade 10), Layne Chicoine

(Grade 10)

Mr. Greening would like to thank his players, parent drivers, and fans for a great season.

Our Kindergarten class toured the Redvers Health Centre on September 27th. Students en-

joyed learning how blood pressure, pulse, and oxygen levels are taken, seeing how the “Bear

Hugger” works, trying out the stethoscopes, meeting some Haven residents, seeing the pet

bunny and fish, and walking through the ambulance. They all went home with a goodie bag of

hospital treasures! On October 10th we walked to the Redvers Fire Hall. Several fire fighters

took time out of their busy day to meet us at the fire hall. We went in some trucks, saw lots of

big tools, tried on fire hats, saw what a fire fighter looks like with all the gear on, saw a boat as

it was aired up, held the hose as it sprayed water and foam, watched a video and had a snack.

Students were given a cup, tattoo and safety book to take home. On October 17th, the class

had a fantastic morning at The Moose Mountain Pumpkin Patch. Students were kept busy

learning about where and how the pumpkins were grown, navigating the corn maze, shooting

corn with the giant sling shot, playing in the sand box, climbing on the bales, riding on the

“train”, and using the zip line

On September 6th, the team of National Kids Cancer Ride’s cyclist and volunteers stood on the edge of the water dipping our rear wheels in The Pacific Ocean. We were reflecting on the days ahead of us, the challenge that we all faced; to ride to the other side of Canada in just 18 days. No one knew how it would go, but we all knew why we were embarking on this journey...destination, beyond kids cancer. For every child and family who have to hear the words, your child has can-cer.

I am thrilled to say that together, we have raised more the $1.2 million for the 17 pediatric oncology centers in Canada. This money will help researchers change the future of kid’s cancers to allow more children to live beyond their diagnosis.

We could not have done this without the generosity of people like you and the staff and students of Redvers School! On behalf of everyone at the National Kids Cancer Ride, thank-you for allowing us to catch our breath and relax for a bit at the school before continuing our journey towards Winnipeg. Once again , the reception at the school was amazing and could-n’t have asked for better hospitality!

Thank-you for being a part of the Coast to Coast Against Cancer Family and supporting us . You are making a difference and we are very proud of our association.

Until next year…

Tundra Oil and Gas made a donation of $10,000 recently to Redvers School for a new

wheelchair accessible play structure at the school. Redvers School and the Redvers Lions

Club are raising money for the play structure, which they hope to have in by the spring of

2018. “This is Phase 3. Our first phase that was completed was done in 2013, which was

the basketball court outside,” says Redvers School vice-principal Bryce Birch. “Phase 2 was

a new playground structure which was installed in 2014, and then for phase 3 we are look-

ing to build a wheelchair accessible playground structure.”

Mr. Birch says the approximate cost of the play structure is $100,000. The School Commu-

nity Council and the Lions Club have raised $60,000 already, and the recent $10,000 dona-

tion by Tundra Oil and Gas has brought the fundraising total up to $70,00.

ELA 7

In Language Arts, the students did a study of the novel “The Last Dog on Earth”. This adventure story about

a boy and his dog, there were several villains that were secondary characters. In their final project for the

novel, the students were to select one of four villains, and prepare a wanted poster for the character. Here

are three examples of finished wanted posters that students completed.

We are now doing a new unit in class, where we are examining the topics of theme, tone and mood in a

variety of different forms of literature. Common to all the forms of literature in this unit is that the sub-

jects and/or authors are indigenous people. We have started this unit with a very short story about a man

named Nipikti, and Inuit elderly man who gave up hunting for carving soapstone to sell for cash in the new

reality of his world. The second, and current piece is a longer short story entitled, “The Medicine Bag”. In

this story , a grandfather who is a Sioux man leaves his home community and travels to a city to visit his

daughter and her family. The students are working on a set of activities about the story, where they ana-

lyze the the themes of the story, make inferences from the story, and reflect about the role of elderly peo-

ple in our lives.

The Grade 8 class has just finished their unit on Life Science by using Ziploc baggies to represent cells. The students made a mixture of starch and water and placed it in a baggie. Then the bags were placed in beakers containing a mixture of iodine and water. The bags were left overnight and the next day they checked the bags to see if there was a colour change. There was! The inside of the bag was full of a purplish-black sub-stance. The purple-black substance is starch that has reacted with iodine. The fact that the colour change oc-curred inside the bag shows that iodine, a small molecule, could pass throughout the tiny pores of the baggie and react with the starch. The starch could not leave the bag because its molecules are too large to pass through the bag. This lab demonstration is a modeling of the function of cell membranes, which function to control what goes in or out of the cells in our bodies-and in all living organisms. This fun activity really helped the students understand how cell membranes act to regulate what materials go in or out of cells.

In Grade 7 the students had a wild time in an activity for their unit on Ecology. We cleared a

big area in the classroom, and then gave each student a plastic cup as a “mouth” and a fork,

spoon or knife as their way of feeding. A bunch of different “food” items such as beans, bits

of string, nails, beads and little wooden blocks were spread all over the floor to serve as

“prey” items. The students were different “predators” competing for food. We signaled the

start of the activity and the kids had one minute to gather as many “prey”/”food” items as

possible. We recorded the catch, and then repeated the activity four more times. The stu-

dents had a set of data that they then averaged and answered some questions to help them

understand how living creatures have to compete for resources such as food, and if they are

not good competitors, certain species can go extinct.

The Redvers senior girls volleyball team had a great 2017 season. They had an

excellent record with games against Maryfield, Manor and Bellegarde. The

girls attended the Lampman tournament which the girls played hard and fierce

to come away with a 2nd place win. Conferences were held in Carnduff where

the girls played strong, unbeatable, high caliber volleyball teams. We played

well and determined but unable to further on to Provincials. The girls overall

had a great season with learning a few more skills and knowledge about the

game. The team included: Amber Tinant, Makayla Matthewson, Katelynne

Hansen, Victoria Sanborn, Madison Garnier, Olivia Aime, Obe De Juan, Kaye De

Juan (Team Captain), Jessica Magotiaux, & Gabrielle Poirier

SCIENCE 10

In Grade 10 Science, the students are working on the unit about Chemistry. They have been learning

about the structure of the periodic table of the elements, about the structure of atoms, and about how

atoms join together to form a huge variety of compounds. The photos show students building models

of various molecules using kits made of coloured wooden balls, sticks and spring connectors to represent

the atoms in the molecules and how they are joined together. The students have also performed lab

experiments where they made a substance called “Elephant’s Toothpaste”, tested the mixing of differ-

ent chemicals to determine the characteristics of chemical reactions, and a lab experiment to explore

the rates at which chemical reactions occur. In this unit, the students are also learning about ions, types

of chemical formulas and how to write balanced chemical equations.
