Welcome
The Oaktree Manor Recovery College will help you learn skills to become more independent. We will help to develop the skills you need to move on or into the community.

Oaktree Manor Recovery approach The Oaktree Manor Recovery College works with you to:

The Recovery College has lots of different courses. Most of the courses will be held at the Occupational Therapy Centre. This is also known as OTC
Some courses may be held on the ward.

How do I attend a course?
Ask to see the booklet. There will be a list of courses for you to choose from.
Tell one of the staff at the Occupational Therapy Centre (OTC) which course you would like to do. Someone in your MDT may suggest a course they think you might like to go to.

Oaktree Manor Recovery College courses
1. Developing Life Skills The Developing Life Skills course will help you learn new skills, or improve the skills that you already have, to make you more independent. You will also have the opportunity to gain a national accredited ASDAN award.
Introduction to Money Management and

Budgeting– (ASDAN)-level 1 Will help you to know how to use your money to buy things you can afford. The course helps you with adding and taking-away and how to know if you are given the right amount of change in a shop. This courses runs for 30 weeks.
Money Management and Budgeting – (ASDAN level 2) Is for those who already have a basic understanding of how to manage money. You will learn how to make a list of things you want to buy and how to decide if you do not have enough money. The course helps you to work out how much money you have. It will also help you work out when you will get more and how often this happens. This is a 30 week course.
Functional English course This course helps you improve your reading and writing skills to produce written letters. This is an accredited course and the course, which will help you work towards accreditation. The course is offered by the Essex Adult Community College and their tutors are on site once a week. This is a 35-week course.

Health Promotion course
Helps you understand more about your health and how to improve it. You will learn about men’s health and women’s health issues. You will learn about different health problems like diabetes. This is a 8 week course available throughout the year.
Food Preparation for beginner’s (ASDAN level 1) Will teach you about kitchen safety. You will also learn how to make sweet and savoury snacks Cooking lessons last for one to two hours depending on what you are making. The course lasts for 10 weeks and is available throughout the year.

Basic Cooking course (Asdan Level 2) Will teach you about kitchen safety. You will also learn how to cook dishes that are more difficult. Cooking lessons last for one to two hours depending on what you are making. The course lasts for 10 weeks and is available throughout the year.
Therapeutic Media course Will help improve your social and team work skills while giving you the opportunity to sing and learn about different types of music. The course is designed with your input and the aim is to enjoy it while learning a new skill such as listening, teamwork and conflict management. The course lasts for 10 weeks and is available throughout the year.

2. Employment Skills This is a practical module that offers the chance to get a qualification in animal care.
Caring for animal’s course ASDAN (Level 1&2) You will help take care of rabbits and chickens. You will learn how to feed and care for them and how to keep their homes clean and safe. This is a rolling 12 week course and is available throughout the year.
Vocational Skills
3. Leisure and Hobbies
You will have the opportunity to learn new skills for work in the Vocational Skills group to support you in the future such as being on time, respect for one another, team work, personal hygiene, completing a task successfully, work skills
Tasks will include animal care, shed cleaning, grounds maintenance such as litter picking and checking stock for animal feed.
This course is on a rolling 30 week course with opportunity to enrol for shorter sessions throughout the year

In this module you will have the chance to expand your hobbies or to learn about something new.
4. Pop-up workshops
Art and Creativity for health This course Is supported by Essex Community College. The course will show you different forms of art and crafts. You will be able to participate in crafts activities for events such as birthdays, Easter, Halloween and Christmas. This is a 14-week course and is available to enrol on 3 occasions throughout the year.

Oaktree Manor Recovery College also offers ‘pop-up’ sessions throughout the year, including the following:
The aim of the Communication Needs session is to support the patient’s knowledge about communication, what their support needs are and how they can be supported by the team here at OTM. A certificate will be provided to acknowledge attendance.
The Caring for Chickens workshop shows how to handle a chicken, learn about what a chicken eats and how to look after it and keep it healthy.
The Independent Advocacy workshop gives the chance to meet an advocate from ‘Rethink’ and learn more about the help and support available.

If you have any skills and experience that you would like to share with your peers, please let your Occupational Therapist know. Your MDT will support you in facilitating some of these sessions and workshops.
