Dear Friends of Stevens,

A gift to Stevens is an investment in the future. You are making an investment in today’sstudents—and tomorrow’s teachers and leaders—just as alumni and friends of Stevensyears ago made investments in your future.

Voluntary contributions and actions throughout the y ears have allowed Stevens tocreate and maintain its standard of excellence and valuable reputation as one of thenation’s leading engineering, science, technology, and management schools.

This would not have been possible without y our support. Contributions and volun-teerism to the Stevens community provide the best and brightest minds of our time withopportunities to learn, create and innovate in a supportive atmosphere. It providesthem with the foundation they need to succeed.

Your annual investments support student scholarships and faculty research initia -tives. They allow for expansion and improvement of existing campus facilities and forfunding the construction of new buildings. Y our generosity enables Stevens to recruitthe world’s best students and professors, which in turn allows the Institute to maintainand improve upon its high standards.

The list goes on and on, but the work is never done. As the cost of education contin-ues to increase, your support is more vital now than ever before to provide facilities foreducation and research at the undergraduate and graduatelevels, to expand existing scholarship programs, and to ini-tiate new opportunities for outstanding students to attendStevens.

Volunteers are needed to assist in raising the criticalfunds that improve facilities, support our students andbuild the endowment. Alumni and other friends of Stevensare always encouraged to volunteer for our annual fall andspring telethons, serve on reunion class giving committees, and participate on various advisory boards.

Stevens’ success depends upon the kindness of itsbenefactors and volunteers. We can never thank you enoughfor your generosity.

Sincerely,

George W. Johnston ’72 Chair, Institute Development CommitteeTrustee

Edwin A. Stevens Societymember Gina Addeo has beeninvolved with giving to theInstitute since graduating in1986. “I am proud to havegiven to Stevens and want tomake sure that in years tocome the Stevens reputationstays strong,” Addeo says.

Addeo’s Stevens educa-tion is one of the tools she ’s

used to succeed in her career.“An Engineering degree fromStevens has played a majorrole in many different ways.”Continued support keeps herconnected to a strong net-work of people, Addeo says.

She is grateful to thegenerations before her forbuilding the foundation thatmade Stevens a strong insti-

The steady increasing costof quality education haspushed the combined priceof tuition, fees and roomand board past $32,000 peryear at Stevens. More than85 percent of undergraduatestudents now receive someform of financial aid. Likeother institutions, contribu-tions from alumni to the

endowed scholarship fundsthey create make it possiblefor today’s students toattend Stevens.

Endowed scholarshipsgive Stevens the resourcesneeded to recruit some ofour nation’s brightest minds. While the overall studentpopulation has grown withthe Institute, small class-

size is still an obvious goal.Scholarships give a smallschool like Stevens the abil-ity to compete with largeuniversities like CarnegieMellon, Cornell and MIT.

Hundreds of individualscholarship funds have beenestablished throughoutStevens’ history. Donorshave used this form of phi-

lanthropy to honor a lovedone, establish a familylegacy or celebrate a graduation anniversary orclass reunion. A namedscholarship creates a solidlegacy that reminds today’sstudents that previous generations are guidingthem along their journeytoward greatness.

A few newscholarshipsestablished this year include:

• The Stephen &Karen BoswellScholarship Fund

• The Marty '68 andHolly ValerioScholarship

• The Alvin GeorgeGunther Scholarship

• The KaminskiFamily Scholarship

Class of 1965 graduateFrank Semcer cites theInstitute’s work in developinga great engineering curricu-lum as a factor in his contin-ued support of the school. Hisdesire to help give new stu-dents the opportunity to get agreat education inspires himas well.

“Like many colleges,Stevens is a very expensiveprivate school, and I feel thatI can offer a student financialassistance through my annual giving,” he says.

Semcer truly believesStevens gave him a solidwork ethic and the knowl-edge he needed to achievethe business successthat he’s used tobuild his own com-pany.

He is grateful tothe generationsbefore him thatmade Stevens astrong institution.“The heritage ofStevens, the past, the present, and

hopefully the future studentswill make Stevens an evenbetter college tomorrow thanit is today,” Semcer says.

Semcer’s continued sup-port grows from a personalbelief that he owes his suc-cess to Stevens. “I feel it is

part of my contribu-tion to help others atStevens.” He encour-ages others to helpthe class of 2009 bylending their finan-cial support.

“I feel I need tosupport the Institutein its efforts to raisescholarships for stu-dents,” Semcer says.

Class of 1965 graduate JohnSchepisi feels good aboutcontributing to Stevensbecause he knows he issupporting an institutionthat will give others thesame opportunity that hewas given. “My pride inStevens and what Stevensdid for me was one of the, ifnot the, major factor in mywillingness to give,” hesays. Schepisi says a majorportion of his career suc-cess and the ability to

“logically apply myself” isattributable to his Stevenseducation. He is grateful tothose who preceded him inmaking Stevens a stronginstitution.

“I encourage others togive, but each individualhas to have the samethought process. Some peo-ple need to be nudged. There are many people whohave graduated fromStevens who need thatextra push,” Schepisi says.

“I did get a good educa -

Stevens’ athleticsprogram earned itsfirst-ever top-50 finish in the DivisionIII Directors’ Cup andfinished secondamong technology-based universities.

A growing school needs room to expand, and gener-ous contributions from Stevens supporters have helpedthe Institute develop and renovate its facilities.

The renovation of six buildings on River Terrace for useas under graduate housing is an example of how the gen -erosity supports growth. The River T errace dorms willhouse about 200 undergraduates.

“We have been very careful in planning to addressneeds of all our students; in particular to replicateHoboken living on our campus. We have students who wantto move off campus to live in Hoboken brownstones, andthat’s what we ’re trying to do with this, ” says HenryDobbelaar, Vice President for Facilities, Support Services& Community Relations. “We will go about this renovationwith great care and attention to the needs of our presentand future student body,” Dobbelaar says.

Dobbelaar has also supported renovations to the 90year-old Walker Gymnasium. The renovations included a

new 4,000 square-foot weight room i n the former pool areaof Walker’ s basement, five new locker rooms, new offices, arecruiting lounge, a redesigned trophy case inside the lobb y andvarious infrastructure and exterior improvements. The patio areaat the entrance to Walker Gym was improved to accommodatemore events.

“I felt the facility was in sore need of renovation. With theinstitute’s expanding athletic program, we were embarrassed tonot have first class facilities for them to be involved in. I feelathletics is a very vital part of students’ future success when theyleave here,” Dobbelaar says.

“We want to have athletic facilities that will attract thescholar athlete. We want to have the most up-to-date workoutareas and outdoor facilities. We want to give our students thetools they need to be successful; b y giving them the tools theyneed, that athletic experience is going to greatly aid them in theirundergrad experience, which is going to spill over into their busi-ness careers,” he adds.

Mary Doddy '80 hasserved as a team mother, cheerleader, professionalmentor and financial andemotional supporter forStevens athletics. She wasinvolved in several activi-ties while at Stevens, “butmostly the varsity fencingprogram.” She continueshelping the team withfinancial and emotionalsupport. “I have beeninvolved with Stevens eversince I graduated. Thereputation of the schoolcontinues to serve mewell, so I try to give backto current students aswell.”

Mary joined the fenc-ing team because it wasthe only women’s varsitysport offered while sheattended. “The greatthing since then is therehave been many moresports added. Tennis andbasketball were around, but only at a club level. There are more sportsopportunities now, and itgives folks more opportu-nity for a well roundededucation,” Doddy says.

Mary has been an EASSociety member for close

to 20 years. “I definitelysee that Stevens had abig impact,” she says.“There’s a certain amountthat I want to give back.I’m always on the lookoutto help people reach theirpotential. It’s always

something I enjoyed doingand something that isvery rewarding.”

Ms. Doddy’s strongsupport of the women’sfencing team was recog-nized in 2003 when shebecame the first recipientof the Edwin A. StevensSociety AthleticsVolunteer Award. “It wasnot something I expected. It’s not why I stayinvolved,” she says. “It’slike an extended family. That’s why you stay intouch and stay involved.”

The Class of 1985 celebrated their 20th Reunion b y raising support forstudent-focused activities.

At Alumni Weekend, members ofthe Class of 1990 presented theircheck supporting the StevensScholarship Fund.

Davis Edwards '95, who cele-brated his 10-year reunionthis year, admits he wasn’tthe best student at Stevens.“In spite of that, I got a verygood education, and it’ssomething that’s helped metremendously in my career.”

Working in the financialindustry, Edwards spendstime with alumni from IvyLeague and other exclusiveschools. Compared to manyof his contemporaries, hefeels that Stevens gave him asuperior education. “I wentto Stevens to get a goodeducation and help with acareer. Stevens kept up itsend of that bargain. I wasvery well prepared for the lifeafter college.”

Edwards used his 10-yearreunion class gift as a launchpad to create a merit-basedscholarship. He wouldn’thave been able to attendStevens without scholar-ships, so giving in this way

seemed fitting.“Attracting and retaining

top students is the bestadvertisement for a school.Students are the ultimatemeasuring stick. You’re notgoing to be a top tier schoolwithout top tier students. Iwant Stevens to be competi-tive; to be able to go out andrecruit top talent, and tohave those students do well.”

There are a limited num-ber of talented and motivat-ed people seeking math, sci-ence, and engineeringdegrees. Stevens is recruitingthese bright minds and help-ing them to become futureleaders. “I feel better givingwhen I know its going tosomeone who is talented andmotivated enough to make adifference in the world.”

Davis Edwards with his two children, Spencer and Brianna.

G.O.L.D. member EmilyOsborne Smith '03 staysinvolved because of herStevens pride and desire tosee the school makeupgrades. She wants to helpothers achieve what Stevenshas helped her achieve.Smith also wants to give stu-dents things that she wishesshe could have had, “moreactivities, better facilities,”while staying at the cusp oftechnology.

Emily says her Stevenseducation was invaluable,“not only what I learned inthe text books, but how Ilearned to plan my time andmultitask to accomplish allof the things I set out to do.”She is grateful to the gener-ations before her for makingStevens a strong institution.“I hope people willsay the sameabout what I’mdoing,” she says.

Emily becameinvolved becauseof her desire tohelp future stu-dents and becauseher husband, CarlSmith '02, gives aswell.

The mostcompelling reasonto contribute toStevens, accord-ing to Emily, is toenable the schoolto continue its

success. For this to happen,“it needs outside funding, and that is where I comeinto play. Alumni need tohelp out.” Emily received anEAS scholarship whenattending Stevens. “I wantto make sure that that isavailable for the years tocome, so that everyone whowould like to attend Stevenscan afford to attend.”

“My interest is in help-ing people who have thegrades to go to Stevens butnot the financial means. Ihate to hear the stories ofpromising youth who don’tget the opportunitiesbecause they can’t affordthem.”

Stevens’ Howe Schoolwas named among the“Elite ResearchInstitutions in theWorld for Managementof Technology” by theInternationalAssociation forManagement ofTechnology.

Four years after its historic groundbreaking ceremo-ny, The Lawrence T . Babbio, Jr . Center for T echnologyManagement was dedicated on Oct. 7, 2005. The award-winning 95,000 square-foot six-story building will enclose

the new administrative home of Stevens ’ renownedWesley J. Howe School of T echnology Management.

Construction of the facility was made possible by a generouspersonal gift from Mr. Lawrence T. Babbio Jr. '66 and addi-

tional contributions from strong Stevens supporters likeVerizon, Lucent, A T&T, the State of NewJersey and other esteemed Stevens alumni.

Looking towards the future, the BabbioCenter will play a critical role in the strengthening ofStevens initiatives intechnology innovation, fostering a global per -spective for lifel onglearning and support. TheBabbio Center will be at

the cusp of leadership in all aspects of thefield of management, helping to generate cre-ative business and technological solutions in aspirit of Technogenesis.

“The new facility—which will be an embodi -ment of Stevens ’ creativity , innovation, self-reliance and entrepreneurial spirit—will helpbusiness leaders to better understand how sci -ence and technolog y relate to their operations,”says Lawrence T. Babbio Jr.

The Class of 1955 used its 50th Reunionfundraising project to make a generous donationto the Babbio Center. Dr. Emil Neu '55 says choos-ing Babbio as its fundraising tar get “was a no-brainer.” Fourteen members from the Class of1955 worked on the project.

“We wanted to do something special, and thiswas something visible, ” says Neu, who had seenthe construction progress from groundbreakingthrough completion. “ The building was very muchin the news and nearing completion. There werenaming opportunities at varying costs. TheDevelopment Office did the legwork for us b y pro-viding the naming opportunities, ” Neu says. TheClass of 1955 ultimately decided to dedicate its50th Reunion fundraising effort toward one of theCenter’s flexible classrooms. “It was a visible proj-

ect with clearobjectives,”Neu says.

corporation.

Charles V. Schaefer, Jr.School of Engineering DeanDr. George P. Korfiatis’ per-sonal inspiration for givingto Stevens comes from hisdesire to see the Institutebecome even greater in thefuture. “It’s to ensure thelong term viability and suc-cess of the Institute,” hesays.

Korfiatis points towardStevens’ engineering schoolto quantify the value of phi-lanthropy. The school ofengineering is named afteralumnus and entrepreneurCharles V. Schaefer, Jr.Schaefer was very muchinvolved with the Stevenscommunity. He chaired the

Institute’s Board of Trusteesand endowed the School ofEngineering.

“His generosity and phi-lanthropy created theSchaefer Fund which hasbeen responsible for fundingstartup packages for newfaculty,” Korfiatis says.Attractive startup packagesare vital to the success ofthe Institute; they allowStevens to compete withother top-notch schools inrecruiting quality faculty. These packages can cost upto $400,000, so “it is impor-tant for a school likeStevens to rely on the gen-erosity of its alumni andfriends.”

Without this kind of gen-erosity, Korfiatis says newinitiatives like the biomed-ical engineering programwould not be possible. “Youneed teaching labs; thereare five labs to put together. This was made possiblethrough the generosity ofour alumni. They enabled usto create this new program,”Korfiatis said.

A small school on thegrowth path toward excel-lence—one competing withmuch larger universities—would not be able to com-pete without generousdonations from alumni andfriends. “A lot of financialinvestment is required to get

a school into aleadershipposition,”Korfiatisaffirms.

Perpetualscholarshipsand fellowshipsthat fund spe-cific endeavorsare the mosthelpful types ofdonations.Contributionslike this can bebudgeted anddepended uponas consistentrevenue.“That’s how youcan plan for thefuture,” saysKorfiatis.

“No matter what I did withmy career, I probably wouldhave supported the school insome fashion,” says 1955Stevens graduate ChuckKovarik. Kovarik served as hisclass secretary after gradu-ating and stayed involvedthrough alumni fund drivesand the merit scholarshipprogram. Living in Baltimoremakes it impossible for himto stay directly involved, buthe still contributes to theStevens community.

“The school was not largewhen I was there. You canreally see where your contri-butions go toward buildingthe institution,” he says. “Inaddition to the general feel-ing you get from contribut-

ing, regardless of whetherI’ve had any success, I wouldexpect to support my school,my local church, things likethat.”

Chuck feels he got agreat education at Stevens, and that makes giving mucheasier for him. “I’ve beenvery satisfied with my edu-cation. The critical ingredi-ent was the comprehensiveengineering program that wehad. We were all generallyaware of the many differentfields within engineering. Ihave never felt unprepared; Ifelt very capable coming outof Stevens,” he says.

Kovarik set aside a giftto Stevens from his willyears ago but didn’t realize

until recently thatthe Institute countedbequests as dona-tions. His personalbequest is specifical-ly for maintainingand improving facili-ties. “People shouldthink about includingStevens in their will;it’s certainly, I think,a painless way togive,” he says with achuckle.

The Legacy Societybegan in 1994 to recognizesupport from alumni andfriends who donate toStevens through their estateplans. Stevens was foundedby a bequest in 1870 fromEdwin A. Stevens, so it seemsfitting to provide specialrecognition for such gifts. There are several ways tosupport Stevens, provide for

your family and take advan-tage of tax provisions thatmight increase your availableincome through legacy gifts.

Those who make legacygifts are encouraged toinform Stevens so Stevenscan thank them, and withtheir permission, list theirnames beside other LegacySociety members.

Leaving Stevens a bequest

in your will is the easiest wayto contribute through yourestate. Stevens can be namedas a beneficiary either by per-centage or specific amount.Stevens can also be named asthe beneficiary of your retire-ment plan. Since these assetsare subject to income andestate tax when left to heirs, retirement assets makeattractive bequests.

Legacy Society member DonBlum '45, a former StevensYacht Club commodore andpresident of J.K. BlumConsulting Engineers, servedas an ensign in the Navy dur -ing World War II and survivedthe sinking of the U.S.S.Indianapolis.

Don takes great pride inhis Stevens education andhas made the most of it.“The reputation of the col-lege I attended helps toimprove my reputation, andtherefore I can charge myclients more and obtain jobsmore easily.”

By continuing to supportStevens, Don feels that he’spaying Stevens back for aneducation and the opportu-nities and successes the

Institute helped preparehim for.

He tips his cap toPresident Hal Raveché. “Ithink Hal is doing an out-standing job as an educator, fund raiser and builder.”

Blum’s children haveattended other universities,“where predecessors createdinstitutes of learning forthem, for which I feelindebted,” he says. But Blumhas chosen to create a lega-cy gift to help build Stevens’endowment, in recognition ofthe school where his suc-cessful career has its roots.
