The University of West Florida’s Health, Leisure and Sports Facility has been declared a Red Cross Emergency Shelter. It will be the first shelter opened in many emergency situations. In the event that circumstances warrant it, the HLS Facility will be closed to the public and will be under the control of the Red Cross until the event has passed. Should this occur, HLS Facility patrons will be notified through Argus, WUWF 88.1, Recreation’s website (uwf.edu/recreation), and signs posted at the entrances and throughout the facility.

The University is very pleased that we are able to offer this service to our community in times of need. We apologize in advance of any incovenience this may cause you, and we thank you for your support and patronage.

WAKEBOARD CLUB PRESIDENT

HI, I’M LEAH GIBNEY, I’M PRESIDENT OF

THE UWF WAKEBOARD CLUB. I’M A

SOPHOMORE MAJORING IN HOSPITALITY

AND RESORT MANAGEMENT.

// HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN WAKEBOARDING?

I LEARNED TO WAKEBOARD WHEN I WAS 7,

BUT I’VE BEEN DOING IT COMPETITIVELY

FOR 4 YEARS.

// WE KNOW YOU COMPETED IN THE NATIONALS THIS SUMMER. HOW WAS THAT EXPERIENCE?

IT WAS CRAZY COMPETING IN NATIONALS. I WENT TO MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA WITH

MY MOM, AND I COMPETED IN THE AMATEUR WOMEN’S DIVISION. I GOT 2ND IN

QUALIFIERS, AND I ENDED UP GETTING 3RD IN FINALS. THAT MADE ME QUALIFY FOR

WORLDS IN INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.

// WHAT WERE SOME OF THE TRICKS YOU DID AT NATIONALS?

IN NATIONALS I DID A TOW 360, A BACK ROLL (WHICH IS LIKE A HEELSIDE CARTWHEEL),

A SCARECROW (WHICH IS A FRONT ROLL WITH A 180) AND A HEEL 360.INDIANA.

// WHERE WILL YOU TRAIN IN PENSACOLA?

THE UWF CLUB HAS THEIR BOAT ON ESCAMBIA RIVER

AND WE CAN TAKE THAT OUT WHENEVER WE WANT,

BUT I ALSO HAVE MY OWN PERSONAL BOAT AT BAYOU

GRANDE. IT’S A 30 MIN DRIVE, BUT IT’S WORTH IT

SINCE IT’S CALM AT ALL TIMES. SO HOPEFULLY I CAN

GET TEAM RIDERS TO HELP ME TRAIN EVERY DAY,

AND I CAN TEACH THEM HOW TO DO TRICKS TOO.

// WHAT WAS YOUR TRAININGLIKE?

MY DAD AND MY MOM DROVE ME AN HOUR TO INVERNESS, FLORIDA EVERY

DAY THIS SUMMER TO RIDE FOR AN HOUR STRAIGHT. IT WAS A HUGE

COMMITMENT, AND MY PARENTS WERE SO SUPPORTIVE. WE WOULD WORK

ON DIFFERENT TRICKS AND TAKE A MILLION FALLS, BUT IT WAS WORTH IT

BECAUSE I GOT THIRD!

// WHO ARE YOUR MENTORS / INSPIRATION?

MY PARENTS! THEY DO EVERYTHING FOR ME. MY

MOM HAS NEVER WAKEBOARDED BUT SHE IS IN THE

BOAT EVERY SINGLE DAY, CHEERING ME ON. EVEN IF I

DO A LITTLE TRICK, SHE DOESN’T KNOW THE

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BIG AND LITTLE TRICKS SO

SHE SCREAMS NO MATTER WHAT. HER EXCITEMENT

MAKES ME WANT TO DO MORE.

// WHAT ACTIVITIES DO YOU HAVE PLANNED FOR THE UWF WAKEBOARD CLUB THIS YEAR?

WE JUST BOUGHT INSURANCE FOR REGIONALS, SO I’M EXCITED ABOUT THAT.

WE HAVE TO DO A LOT OF FUNDRAISING TO HAVE THE MONEY TO GO TO

DIFFERENT TOURNAMENTS. THERE IS ONE AT FLORIDA GULF COAST

UNIVERSITY (FGCU) FOR REGIONALS. IF WE DO TOP 5 IN REGIONALS THEN

WE’LL QUALIFY FOR NATIONALS IN SAN DIEGO. I WENT LAST YEAR AND

COMPETED AS AN INDIVIDUAL AND GOT 3RD, SO IF THE TEAM COULD GO WE

WOULD DO SO WELL. HOPEFULLY WE CAN GET PEOPLE!

TO START: WITH YOUR HANDS PLACED ON THE FLOOR IN FRONT OF THE STABILITY BALL, REST YOUR TORSO ACROSS THE STABILITY

BALL AND WALK YOUR HANDS OUT UNTIL YOUR TOES COME OFF THE FLOOR AND ARE ON TOP OF THE STABILITY BALL. MAKE SURE YOUR

ARMS ARE PLACED DIRECTLY UNDERNEATH YOUR SHOULDERS ON THE FLOOR. KEEP YOUR LEGS ACTIVE TO ENSURE YOUR BODY REMAINS

STRAIGHT AND ALIGNED PARALLEL TO THE FLOOR. BE SURE TO KEEP YOUR CORE ENGAGED SO YOUR LOWER BACK DOES NOT SAG AND

KEEP YOUR ARMS STRAIGHT.

TO CURL: KEEPING YOUR LEGS STRAIGHT, EXHALE AND BRING YOUR FEET TOWARD YOUR CHEST. THE BALL WILL ROLL FORWARD AS

YOUR HIPS PIKE UP TOWARD THE CEILING. CONTINUE UNTIL YOUR HIPS ARE LINED UP WITH YOUR SHOULDERS; YOUR LEGS, TORSO AND
