Let’s Begin!Another word for begin is start . The words start and begin are

synonyms . That means that these two words mean the same thing.Often, if we see the word begin in a sentence, we can erase thatword and write the word start in its place and the sentence will stillhave the same meaning. Let’s try!

Before we begin reading the Qur’aan, we have to make our intention.We make our intention in our heart – never out loud.

What is The Qur’aanThe Qur’aan is the Word of Allaah, both the words and the meaning.

Allaah spoke it in a real sense and gave it to Jibreel the

trustworthy, and then Jibreel brought it down to the heart of the Prophet ,

so that he might be one of the warners, in a plain Arabic tongue. We know

this because Allaah says in the Qur’aan:

And truly, this (the Qur'aan) is a revelation from the Lord of the 'Aalameen (mankind, jinnand all that exists), Which the trustworthy Rooh [Jibreel (Gabriel)] has brought down Uponyour heart (O Muhammad م ل ھ و ی ل ى ع )ل ) that you may be (one) of the warners {26:192-94}

Allaah, may He be glorified and exalted, revealed it to Muhammad

piecemeal , i.e., bit by bit, over twenty-three years, in accordance with the

wisdom of Allaah, may He be glorified and exalted. Some of the revelation

was revealed for a specific reason for which it was sent down, and some of it

was revealed without a specific reason. And some of it was revealed to tell of

something that happened to the Prophet and his companions. Some of it

was revealed concerning shar‘i (legal) rulings, according to what the scholars

have said concerning this matter.

salam ). There are 114 suwar in the

Qur’aan. Suwar is the plural of surah.

The first surah in the Qur’aan is al-

Fatiha. The last surah in the Qur’aan is

Surah An-Nas. Every surah in the

Qur’aan, except surah at-Taubah,

starts with al-Basmallaah. Before we

begin reciting al-Qur’aan, we say al-

istiadah. We do not say any special

words when we finish reciting al-

Today in Islamic Studies we learned about the Qur’aan. We learned that

Allaah revealed the Qur’aan to the Prophet Muhammad W e also learned

that the Qur’aan was not revealed all at once; it was revealed over 23 years

We learned that the Prophet Muhammad was the last messenger that

Allaah sent to mankind. After the Prophet Muhammad , Allaah will not

send any more messengers or prophets. Finally, we learned that Allaah will

protect the Qur’aan from being changed in any way. I hope we learn more

The Revelation of the QuranOur Prophet, Muhammad ibn Abdillaah , used to love

going to spend time alone in the cave of Hiraa. He liked to

do this even before he knew that Allaah had chosen him to be

His Last Messenger to mankind.

Once, when the Prophet was in the cave, the angel

Jibreel came to Muhammad and asked him to

read. Muhammad, like most of the Arabs at that time, did not

know how to read nor did he know how to write, and he told

Jibreel “I do not know how to read.”

The angel Jibreel grabbed Muhammad

forcefully and pressed him . Jibreel pressed the

Prophet so hard that he could not bear it. Then Jibreel

let go of the Prophet and once again

he asked him to read. Again, the Prophet told Jibreel

that he could not read. The angel Jibreel

grabbed the Prophet a second time and again Jibreel

pressed Muhammad forcefully until he could

not bear it anymore. Then Jibreel let him go. Like before,

the angel asked the Prophet to read, and again the

Prophet told Jibreel that he did not know how

to read. The angel Jibreel grabbed the Prophet

a third time and again Jibreel pressed him . This

time, when the angel Jibreel let the Prophet

go, he did not asked the Prophet to read. This time,

Jibreel let the Prophet go and he said,

Makkee and Madanee Suwar

As you know dear student, there are 114 suwar in the Qur’aan. Our

beloved scholars sort the suwar into two categories: Makkee and

Madanee. How do the scholars know which suwar are Makkee and which

are Madanee?

If the surah (or most of its verses) was revealed to the Prophet

Muhammad before his hijrah to al-Madeenah, the surah is considered

a Makkee surah. If the surah (or most of its verses) was revealed after the

Prophet’s hijrah to al-Madeenah, the surah is considered to be a

Madanee surah.

Some suwar that are Makkee are: Surah Al-Alaq, Surah Al-Fajr, Surah

At-Takathur, and surah Al-Humaza . Some suwar that are Madanee are:

surah Al-Baqarah, surah Aal-’Imraan, surah An-Nisaa, surah Al-Maa’idah,

and surah Al-Anfaal. Knowing if a surah is Makkee or Madanee helps us

understand the Qur’aan better. We ask Allaah to reward our noble

scholars for sorting the suwar in this way…ameen!
