HOW DOES OUR CULTURE AFFECT THE DECISIONS WE MAKE?2nd Quarter: Day 1
GETTING STARTED…
In your writer’s notebook: Write about an important decision you have
made in your life. What influenced it? How did you figure out what to do? What people or situations may have shaped this decision?
Be prepared to share!
LET’S REVIEW.
VERBS show action or state of being and make up the main part of the predicate of a sentence. In your writing, use
STRONG action verbs…don’t overuse WEAK linking verbs! (is, are, was, were)
VERBALS are words formed from verbs, but they function like another part of speech.
THE PARTICIPLE
PARTICIPLES look like verbs, but act like adjectives! They are a type of verbal.
The reading student A fallen leaf A tried solution
COMMON ENDINGS FOR PARTICIPLES
-ing -ed -en -t -n
Reading Returned Broken Lent Mown
EXAMPLES!
The singing girl drove to school. The opened can of chili was thrown away. He saw the broken window in the abandoned
house. The lent library book got lost in the move. The dog ran through the freshly mown grass.
THE PARTICIPIAL PHRASE
…consists of the participle and any words that modify it or connect it to these words!
Remember, participles function as adjectives, so the phrases will include the nouns they modify.

Only morality plays were really popular before the Renaissance
The new genre of comedy was introduced; tragedies were also performed
Plays used to be performed in courtyards before theaters were built during this time
THE GLOBE THEATER
This was the most popular theater in England at the time
Built on the south bank of the river Thames in 1599
Could hold several thousand people Plays were very popular at the time, brought
in lots of money The actors just followed prompts; the actual
plays were written and produced after the performances

THE GLOBE THEATER
The audience: Groundlings: commoners who stood in the pit by
the stage Gentry: sat in galleries in the main theater area Nobles: could sit at the side of the stage
On June 29, 1613, a fire broke out and destroyed the original Globe. A new one was built, but that one was also destroyed in 1642 when the Puritans influenced Parliament to ban theaters.
