The Japanese developed the 5 S practice to improve the work environment

When used effectively, the 5 S tool can help to reduce wastage, increase safety and improve work efficiency as well

Though this practice originated in the manufacturing industries, today it can be applied to any business environment

A heap of sand, pebbles and other

construction material lies on the

footpath outside the college.

Passers-by have to use the narrow

main road to walk which is not

safe. Hence it is imperative to get

rid of this unnecessary things and

dispose them to make the

ambience clean and pleasant

All the items, equipments or

materials required at the

workplace should be arranged in a

proper order so that it is easily

reachable whenever required

SEISO (Shine)Use Cleaning as Inspection

The garbage bin on the street

outside the college is always in a

mess with all the trash and junk

items lying outside the bin.

Improper disposal has led to dirt

accumulating on the road and

thus causing air pollution.

SEIKETSU (Standardize)Maintain high standards and

orderliness

The bikes are parked on

the footpath and the main

road being narrow, causescrowding on the path and

inconvenience to the

people during jams. Thus

there is an urgent need to

standardize, that is, to

prohibit bike parking on

the footpath and maintainorderliness.

SHITSUKE (Sustain)Maintain & review standards

Once the previous 4 practices

are implemented, it should

be taken care to maintain the

same standards over a period

of time. Efforts should be

taken to keep the practices

going on so that there’s no

decline in this new standards.

• Get rid of unwanted things that

lie on the road

• Dispose off the garbage lying

outside the bin and on the road to

make the ambience clean &

pleasant

• Prohibit parking of bikes or other

vehicles on the footpath

• Potholes/open pits on the road

should be brought to the notice of

the authorities to avoid accidents

and water logging during rainy

season

Understood the concept of 5 S, its importance and

value that its adds to any environment because of

its presence or absence

How the implementation of 5 S can impact the

working conditions, the efficiency and productivity

of an organization

How 5 S practices can be used for the college

street to improve cleanliness, hygiene and the

college ambience
