» identifying the problem

We are making a ‘cerpen,’ or short story for children from age 7, for

our Language A – Bahasa Indonesia lesson. It is intended to teach

moral values to the children while entertaining them.

We are then asked to make this short story more interesting

especially for children by making it more interactive and engaging.

In this way, our story could be different from others, making it

more memorable and entertaining.

» design brief

We wanted to turn the fantasy short story text into a digital story,

in which the story is presented using a combination of voice,

illustrations, movement and text. Those elements will be combined

together into one animation. The characters in the story and their

characters will be represented as moving illustrations on the

screen. Their dialogues will be voiced. These will help to increase

the audience’s interest and attention more than a text-only story.

» research

We did research on the Internet about digital storytelling. These

are the results:

→ There are various tools available for creating animated

digital stories, but most of them are designed to create

stories based on photographs.

→ Digital storytelling helps the story itself to reach a wider

audience because it can cause people to be less distracted

when listening to the story

→ It helps people in remembering what they learned through

the story (e.g. moral values)

→ In making a good digital story/animation, we must ensure

that we use creative and appropriate elements (sound,

image, etc) and also set a good rhythm/speed.

There will be 2 main characters, a boy and a fairy.

The characters will be drawn and animated on top of a

setting/background from scratch, using animation software.

The characters’ dialogue would be voiced by a recording of

the story text/script.

The whole animation will consist of several short scenes

combined according to a set storyboard.

The animation will be drawn in color.

The duration of the animation will be between 2-5 minutes.

The animation must make people understand the story

better.

The animation must be made according to the story script.

The animation must be easily accessible for its audience (i.e.

in a widely-compatible file format)

» resources

Considering the investigation and design needs, we have decided

that we are going to make the digital story/animation using Flash

MX/Flash 8, because we are drawing the characters from scratch

and because the software is capable of handling all elements in the

specification including drawing, animating, inserting sounds, etc.

For recording the sounds we are going to use the built in Sound

Recorder software in our computers.

» steps

1. Investigate and plan the animation project

2. Collect the designs and story text, turn them into a

storyboard for easier drawing

3. Based on the storyboard, draw the characters in Flash

4. Animate the characters’ movement

5. Record the dialogues and sound effect

6. Insert the recorded sound files into the animation

7. Check, and then export/publish the animation to a widely-

compatible and suitable file format

8. Evaluate the animation
