Measuring project success goes beyond hitting project end dates. It requires an honest post-mortem on the project portfolio as a whole. Assessing portfolio results allows organizations to identify what went well and what missed the mark. If done correctly, Lessons Learned prevents organizations from repeating the same mistakes over and over again. In this session, you'll learn process tips on how to effectively conduct a retrospective review, so you will never be fooled again. The two key areas of focus to be successful include answering a set of questions: 1. Did we launch the "right" set of projects? Did the project best support our goals? Did

we meet our business outcomes? How does this information help inform us for next year's planning?

2. Did we manage projects "right"? Did we manage each project successfully? Did projects end on time? Can we improve in our project management practices to manage project more efficiently?

About Lois Zells

Lois Zells is an international author, lecturer, and business consultant, specializing in software engineering consulting. She is the co-founder and past co-chair of PMI’s IS SIG, a past co-chair of the PMI General SIG Council and a PMI Woman of the Year (1993). Because of her widely-acknowledged expertise, it is not unusual for her to be called upon to serve as an expert witness in software project failure litigations. Ms. Zells is the author of, and consultant in, a number of popular management workshops on strategic planning, project management, total quality management, strategic systems planning, process maturity assessments, methodologies and techniques, business processes-engineering, and other related topics. She also wrote the best seller, Managing Software Projects, and has published many articles in the major periodicals of the industry. Agile Project Management with Scrum

Panel Discussions are only presented once. This Panel will begin at 11:00AM in the Independence Ball Room across from the main Ball Room.

This discussion will focus on the adoption of Agile with Scrum within a corporate environment. Three panelists will have ten minutes to discuss their Agile with Scrum experience for a total of 30 minutes. This will be followed by a fifteen minute panel discussion. The final fifteen minutes will be an open question and answer period.

Moderator: Richard S. Kornstedt, PMP, CSM Mr. Kornstedt has been a member of PMI since 2005 and involved with the Delaware Valley chapter ever since. He first volunteered and managed the PMP Awareness event and simultaneously worked with the Tools Conference Team. The 2009 Tools Conference will be the third Tools conference he has been involved with. Richard is currently the Mid-Atlantic Regional Project Management Lead at CA, an Enterprise Software provider. His highest priority initiative at CA is evangelizing and adopting Agile Project Management with Scrum.

Cathy L Nanovic, PMP Recently, Cathy filled the role of Senior Manager, Back Office Systems PMO at Music Choice, a digital content publisher for the cable TV industry. Earlier this year Music Choice undertook the conversion of their Engineering/IT development area to Agile/Scrum. Basically new to Agile and Scrum, Cathy spent the last 6 months in the trenches with the troops working out the details of implementation, tailoring it to meet Music Choice's specific needs and coaching developers and managers. She has 35 years experience in IT development and project management.

Daniel J. Gullo, PMP, CSM, CSP Mr. Gullo has over twenty years of IT project management experience with more than five years of experience managing and implementing Scrum for large scale enterprises. A seasoned programmer and QA engineer, Daniel has dedicated the majority of his career to continuous process improvement, delivery of quality products and services, and overall customer satisfaction. He currently manages the Enterprise Architecture Program at Project Management Institute (PMI).

Panelist: William F. Nazzaro, MSCS, CSM Mr. Nazzaro has twenty years experience successfully delivering enterprise software solutions for Fortune 100 companies. Bill has provided unparalleled services in Agile SCRUM, XP, TDD, Iterative PM, and user stories. 10 Ways My Hobby Made me a Better Project Manager Randy Bennett Training dollars are among the first to be cut in economic hard times. That is espe-cially true when the training covers the key ingredients to success as a project man-ager: The "Soft Skills." However, with a slight shift in your mindset, you can pull your own professional development of these key skills from the most unlikely places. Randy’s hobby is being an official at sports car races. It is about as far from the clean, air-conditioned offices we work in, but he still uncovered 10 solid reminders to boost the soft skills of project management. In this presentation he will share those lessons.

A project manager for 20+ years, Randy is currently employed in the DataSafe product line of Fiserv, Inc. His experience includes a wide variety of industries – con-sumer packaged goods, financial services, pharmaceutical – with some stops along the way as an owner of a consulting firm, and serving as COO of a home ser-vices start-up. He has presented at several PMI Congresses, and is a practitioner-faculty member of the University of Phoenix Online. He holds the PMP certification and is a Certified ScrumMaster and signatory of the Agile Manifesto. Within PMI, he has worked on the original and second edition of the OPM3. He is a Registered Corporate Coach from the Worldwide Association of Business Coaches.

Using Mind Maps to Prepare for the PMP Exam Jim Deiner This session will present a different approach to preparing for the PMP exam. The speaker will introduce the visual tool, mind mapping, explaining how to construct maps, both manually and using one of the popular software tools. He will then walk through how he used mind maps (and other visual tools) to prepare for the PMP exam. Finally, Jim will show how mind mapping can be used to support various pro-ject management activities, including Project Dashboards, Brainstorming, Presenta-tions and general integration of various forms of information.

Jim Deiner has directed and managed projects for 20 years, with experience in both IT and Research & Development. He has worked in the pharmaceutical, logis-tics and financial services industries, and supported virtually every business func-tion. Currently he is a project manager in early R&D for Centocor, Inc. Mr. Deiner holds an MBA and BS Engineering from Cornell University. He is certified a Project Management Professional, and a Six Sigma Green Belt.

Program Management tied to Project Stage Gate Approval Processes Ken Fulmer This presentation will show the integration of many concepts used to link portfolio/program management with specific project management, and to the SDLC (software development life cycle) in a more unified approach. It will also discuss how to be flexible in using agile, packaged software and waterfall based methods for code construction to deliver project products. The premise is that the initial phases are essentially the same, and that the progressive elaboration of all require-ments, and all deliverables are based on factors such as project size, complexity, strategy. This is intended for an intermediate to advanced senior project manager to deal specifically with business projects that use information technology as part of the total business outcome management for the project.

Ken Fulmer is currently the CEO and Principal consultant at Information Workplace Solutions. He is focused on solutions to Business Process and core collaboration and business intelligence projects for Financial, industrial and energy companies. Ken was previously the CTO of Sunoco where he managed technology and planning as well as the PMO. He developed the techniques presented in this session while at Sunoco and provides examples of how to handle difficult situations. He holds a bachelors degree from LaSalle University, and an MBA from Clarion University.

An Introduction to SharePoint & Project Management John Senk This session will review the basics of Microsoft SharePoint, its features, and approaches for using it to manage projects of all sizes. Users without technical experience will see how to create sites and use the many SharePoint tools to address everyday project management needs such as creating document repositories, project calendars, issue logs, and memo libraries. John will share lessons learned from real-life experiences and guide attendees in planning a site and getting started.

Mr. Senk has twenty five years of experience managing and directing IT development, operations, and delivering PMO services for State and Local Government, Pharmaceutical, Electric Utility, Manufacturing, and Banking industries. He focuses on Project Management (including managing significant system development efforts, setting up and maintaining Program Management Offices, and providing Project Management Training) and Quality Assurance/Quality (including Independent Verification and Validation, establishing Standards, QA/QC Processes and Reports. Best Practices & PMBoK Updates Frank R. Walker, P.Eng., PMP Frank will give a brief overview of the new PMBoK Guide and some real-life examples. New management tools are much more powerful than most people realize. Everyone can now do what only companies like NASA, Fluor-Daniel, and Bechtel could do on the mainframe twenty-five years ago. These new tools and litigation changed the contracting process dramatically. Owners and consultants can now use such methods as fast track PM and multiple primes to align contractor and owner goals and to complete projects much faster than ever before.

Now we are managing portfolios of projects rather than large single projects. The most suc-cessful companies are sorting their projects into multiple Tiers and using Total Float to bor-row resources from Tier 3 projects to keep Tier 1 projects on schedule. Resource leveling at the Portfolio level, “managing by exception” just the activities that are close to critical and behind schedule and new risk management techniques have raised the bar once again.

Frank is president of TWG Project Management, LLC. TWG supports clients through all stages of the program or project life cycle. He has worked for 40 years on many unique and chal-lenging projects worldwide for many different industries and public agencies. He is adept in all the aspects of project management. You can receive up to 7 PDUs for attendance at all presentations on Saturday and an additional 7 PDU for attending a seminar on Friday. Log on to www.pmi.org and look for the option to View PDUs. Get Involved! Welcome to the Sixth Annual PMI-DVC Project Management Tools Conference. Our chapter has been dedicated to providing an annual event for our members, educational in nature, to enhance the careers of our project managers. Volunteer teams use their own creativity to develop the venue and prepare conferences such as this one. The success of these teams inspires us, as a chapter, to produce more results by way of projects and events using volunteer teams and we now have many teams actively working on important events. As project managers, we all know the value of a strong team. As a chapter and as the Chairperson for this event, we could not have asked for a better team to develop this conference. Their dedication, creativity, and professionalism has been overwhelming and this event is the result. I thank this year’s team for their efforts and for the privilege to work with them. Several members have been participating in this event for four or more years. Don’t be surprised when we tell you that volunteering for a chapter project is very rewarding.
