Public Holiday - Melbourne Cup Day
Next Tuesday 6th November
A Message from the Principal….
Dear Families,
How delightful to witness our students enjoying the grassed
terraced area adjacent to the hall on Monday. The area certainly
was well used – with students chatting in groups, sunning
themselves and a few even reading. We expect the area to be highly
popular and have labelled it a “no sports equipment” area to ensure
it remains a relaxing space that encourages students to interact
with each other and enjoy each other’s company.
Student Leadership Conference: On Monday, our grade six
leadership team participated in a Student Leadership Conference held
at our school. Student leaders from Beveridge and Upper Plenty
Primary Schools also attended. Throughout the day the students heard from Arthur
Townsend (the DEECD Regional Director), Councillor Sue Marstaeller and
representatives from the Mitchell Shire Youth Forum. The day concluded with
a “surprise visit” from Natalie Smith – the Australian bronze medallist for
shooting from the recent London Para-Olympics. All guest speakers talked
about their leadership role - the challenges and triumphs; the importance of
goal setting; how to delegate to get a task completed; making hard decisions
and being true to your goal and dream. The day was certainly very busy, with
many new things discussed and learned.
Kindergarten Transition Visits: This week we will begin our Kindergarten Transition visits for our 2013
Preps. All future Preps have been paired up with a current grade four buddy, with many of our grade four
students already having visited their their little buddy at kindergarten. At this stage we are expecting thirty two
Prep students next year and we welcome them and their families to our school. During two of their next five visits,
I will meet with the parents to go over some basic information about our school, ensuring our new families are in
the loop and are feeling well prepared and well informed prior to their official beginning next year.
We thank our Parents’ Club for purchasing a school hat for all of our future 2013 Preps.
MPOWER Girls Course: Today I am in Melbourne with our Student Wellbeing Officer, Toni. We are both
attending a course titled “MPOWER Girls” – meaning empower girls. It is all about building and maintaining
relationships between girls and it builds on the course attended by Mr Potesta and Toni last week that was
focussed on boys and their relationships. We look forward to working with our students in the near future to share
the new knowledge we have gained.
Safeway Tokens: Last week we enjoyed ordering the many pieces of equipment that we were able to purchase as
a result of the kind donations of Safeway vouchers we received from our school families and various members of
the wider community. Listed below are the items ordered – well in excess of $3000. As you can see we have tried
to cover many bases – Mathematics, Literacy, Developmental Play, Physical Education and a few fun items to use
on the oval (especially those giant bubble wands!)
Bunnings Barbecue: Thank you once again to the super helpers, the amazing “onion slicers” and Ross for his
donation of drinks - all of whom contributed to our very successful barbecue. My apologies to the adult helpers
whose photos I took on the day but somehow accidently deleted…. or did I really even take the photo properly?????
Anyway we were happy to include your child’s photo last week as the next best option. Next time I’ll get Ros to
take the photos! Sorry.
Melbourne Cup Weekend: A little reminder that our school is open as usual on Monday 5th November but will
be closed for Melbourne Cup Day on Tuesday 6th November.
Have a great week ~ Rhonda Cole
Working Bee
FRIDAY 9th November 3:30PM – Lock it in your diaries!!!!! Our twilight working bees are always a successful
event, so if you are able to offer your services on Friday 9th November, it would be greatly appreciated. There
will be a BBQ and drinks for all those who attend. Jobs for this working bee will include; installation of a new tree
near the cricket nets, installation of a new drain outside the 3/4 portables, installing prep art work pavers around
the school, repairing brickwork and a general tidy up of the school. If you are available on Friday 9th November,
please return the reply slip in this newsletter.

Working Bee Reply Slip
I .............................................................. will be able to attend the working bee on Friday 9th November from 3:30
onwards.
I will be able to supply the following tools;
Wheelbarrow Pick
Shovel Pressure Cleaner
Rake Other (please specify)
Change a light bulb and see what you can save.
An energy-saving light bulk might not seem cheap but over its lifetime it could save up to
75% of electricity consumption and a lot more besides. Like the planet for example. You
shouldn’t flick the switch on and off all the time, because you will waste electricity.

Muffin Break Muffin Vouchers: Haven’t got your vouchers yet?
Time is running out for this great bargain.
Earlier this year we were fortunate to win the Muffin Break Facebook competition. Half of the muffins were
sold to families with the remainder of the muffins being provided through a voucher system. Vouchers are
available for purchase through the newsletter or directly from the front office….. What a great idea with the
school holidays coming up. No doubt many of us will be at Epping Plaza enjoying endless hours of shopping
over the holiday break and a cheap nice muffin with a nice cuppa will fill that hunger gap.
Cost: Each voucher will provide you with FOUR Muffin Break Weight Watchers Muffins
Each voucher of four muffins costs $8.00 each (which totals $2.00 per individual muffin) or 3 vouchers
(12 muffins) for $20 (which totals $1.60 per muffin)
Vouchers can only be used at the Epping Plaza store and are valid until 31st December 2012.
Don’t forget that these muffins can be frozen so they are also a cheap, nice lunch box filler.
Money raised is all profit for the school and will be used to pay for the instant turf we have laid on our new
terraced area near the hall. Thank you for your support.

5/6 Softball Last Friday the 26th October the girls softball
team played against Epping Primary School in
the Whittlesea Division finals. The girls gave
it their all, working well as a team by cheering
and supporting each other, and showing great
sportsmanship towards the other team. Even
though Epping P.S proved too strong, our girls
put up a great fight. They did Wandong P.S
proud!

‘We tried our best although we lost. It was a fun day’ – Shani H
On Friday 26th October the Wandong Primary School Rounders team travelled to Lalor East Primary School to
compete in the Whittlesea Division Final of Rounders. All students were busy training during recess and lunch
time in the weeks leading up to the competition. Each of the students played their best and represented
Wandong Primary School, displaying a fantastic attitude to each other and the other team.
Lalor East won the game but our team did extremely well to make it as
far as they did.

Opening Classroom Doors What’s happening in Prep Giacomini? Wow! What an amazing start to term four. We have been practising writing recounts on dotted thirds. Our
letter formation and letter placement on lined paper has improved greatly! During reading sessions, we are
focusing on reading Sight Words and reading with expression.
During Numeracy sessions, our class has been learning to count on from a two digit number. This week we
began looking at picture graphs. We created a graph looking at how many children have blue,
brown, and black coloured eyes. It was very interesting!
In Investigation sessions, we have been looking closely at Bugs. We discovered
that ants can swim and walk on water. Some of our classmates created ants
using recycled materials. Others wanted to work on constructing buildings using blocks. A
few classmates decided to open a Café, employing front of house and cooking staff.
We have also had a visit from Wandong Kindergarten. It was really nice to show them around our classroom.
We can’t wait to see them again. After giving them a Welcome card we created we were able to play games
together.
This term is shaping up to be very exciting indeed!
Opening Classroom Doors 5/6 K This term our Inquiry topic is ‘We are the Earthkeepers’. We
are focussing on topics such as global warming, the water cycle
and food chains. Students have been exploring aspects like the
effects of human involvement, how each topic works and how
they relate to each other. Students are also discovering how to
be sustainable to keep our world healthy for longer.
Here are some expert posters students have made in groups. This week students are making a sustainable mini
ecosystem which they will have to monitor throughout the term. Come and check it out!
PARENTS CLUB PIZZA DAY This term Parents Club will offer our students a special pizza lunch. The yummy pizza will be available on
Thursday 15th November. Cost is $1.50 per slice. Please select type of pizza and enter number of slices
