Weekly Message Dear Parents, Weekly message Dear Parents, We are now halfway through Term 1. While it has been raining for much of the week, there is still a lot of learning occurring in our school. Items of note are: Peacekeepers Our Year 6 Peacekeepers commenced their duties in the playground (and in classrooms during wet weather breaks) and are already providing invaluable support in helping students with any problems they might be having in games and other activities. School Captains acknowledged at Keira Community of Schools Assembly On Tuesday our Captains and Vice-captains participated in a special assembly at Keira High School to acknowledge the student leadership teams from all of the Keira Community of Schools. Each leader was introduced, and our school captains gave a brief address around our school values and their expectations as leaders in the school. Stage 1 Museum Excursion As all our Stage 1 parents would be aware, we had to postpone our walking excursion to the museum on Wednesday due to the rain. We will reschedule these visits once the weather conditions are more favourable. Stage 1 History Interviews On Monday Mrs Lewis and I are going to be interviewed by Stage 1 students about our own primary schooling as part of their History unit. As schools were considerably different when we started our education, it will be interesting to share our experiences with the children. As I was schooled at a bush school with only one teacher, (and 2 other children in my grade), it will be interesting to see the children’s responses! • School Photos Our School Photos will take place on Wednesday March 11th. Please complete MSP photography forms which were handed out in class and return these to school with your child on the day photos will be taken. P&C Meeting – Annual General Meeting Our next P&C meeting is the Annual General Meeting next Tuesday March 10th at 6.30pm and all are most welcome. It will be followed by our regular meeting. School Picnic Our annual School Picnic is on next Friday 13th March at Cordeaux Dam. I am really looking forward to this as it is a great day out where students and teachers can walk, talk and play in a very relaxed atmosphere, while enjoying some time in a bush setting. It remains one of my favourite days of the year, as I actually get to focus on children rather than a computer screen! Community Hub News Today local member Paul Scully visited our Community Hub. One of the programs run through our Hub is teaching English and Mr Scully was very interested in this program and was keen to chat with the mothers who are currently attending. It was a very enjoyable experience and our Director of Educational Leadership Margaret Turner was also able to attend. Our thanks go to Mrs Yacoub and the mothers for their hospitality.

Have a great weekend, Kind regards, Harold Cosier

  • Positive Behaviour for Learning at WPS! What is PBL?

PBL stands for Positive Behaviour for Learning. It is a whole school approach for promoting positive behaviour within our school. PBL is about teaching the desired behaviours to students and showing them how they can be successful, allowing for a safe and supportive learning environment.

    What are our school values?

Our school values are the expectations the school and community of WPS believe are required to create a positive learning environment. The 3 school values are: Respect, Responsibility and Safety. All areas around the school have the school values and expectations displayed on signs to support students in making positive choices on the playground and in classrooms.

    PBL Lessons

Teachers have been working hard to encourage students to display their PBL values throughout the school. This week, we have been revising what Respect, Responsibility and Safety looks like before school. Students should be arriving at school from 8:30 onwards! This week, we have a whole school assembly so students have been revising what Respect, Responsibility and Safety look like at the assembly. Be sure to come to the assembly and see how Respectful, Responsible and Safe the students at WPS are!

FAST AND FREQUENT PUGGLE Last term, WPS launched the ‘fast and frequent’ whole school reward system. This system aims to recognise and encourage positive and appropriate behaviours in all areas at school. A fast and frequent puggle is a small token which all K-6 students can receive when they display the three school values on the playground and in the classroom. All K-6 students were set a target of 5000 puggles to achieve a whole school reward, which is decided by the SRC (Student Representative Council).

Students this week have been working extra hard to earn puggles before school as this was one of the focus areas. Puggles will be collected on Friday and the new school total will be announced at the assembly on Friday. Stay tuned to find out the new school total!

  • Tell Them From Me (TTFM) Student Surveys I am delighted that this term, our school, like many other public schools in the state, will participate in a Department of Education initiative: the Tell Them From Me student feedback survey. The survey measures factors that are known to affect academic achievement and other student outcomes. The focus of the NSW-wide survey is on student wellbeing, engagement and effective teaching practices. More information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au The survey is a great opportunity for our students to provide us with valuable and quick feedback on what they think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them. More than 6,300 schools in Australia and around the world have used Tell Them From Me to survey 5.4 million students. Capturing the voices of our students will help improve how we do things at our school. I want to assure you that the survey is confidential. The survey is conducted online and will typically take less than 30 minutes to complete. It will be administered during school hours between 9 March and 8 May. Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary. A consent form and FAQs for parents/carers about the survey is being sent home with students. If you do not want your child or children to participate, please return the form to school by 6 March 2020. Copies of the form and FAQs are available from: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/information-for-parents. The consent form and FAQs are available in 23 languages. If you have any questions please contact Miss Brooke Axam, Stage 2 Assistant Principal and 3-6 Instructional Coach.

Instructional Leader Update History and English - Stage One Stage One students are learning about life in the past, including how families, celebrations, technology, toys and school are different now compared to years ago. Students have been reading many rich texts and writing engaging narratives focused on historical facts and experiences. To support this learning, Stage One students will walk to our local museum in the upcoming weeks due to our excursion being postponed because of the wet weather this week. We look forward to sharing photos and writing samples of our museum excursion. History and English - Early Stage One Early Stage One students are learning about their own personal histories and how stories of the past can be told and shared. The children have been comparing the present with the past to learn about similarities and differences in family life. Each week the children have been drawing and writing about their family history to make a “Me and My Family History” booklet. This beautiful booklet will be shared with families during our Kindergarten historical story sharing and morning tea in Week 11 of this term. A note outlining the details of our special morning has been sent home and is also attached to this newsletter. We look forward to seeing you on this day and celebrating the history of our children.

A Walk Through History and Morning Tea for Kindergarten Families

The teachers and children in Kindergarten would like to welcome our families into the classroom on Tuesday, the 7th of April at 9.15am. The aim of this morning is to invite families to have a look at our work samples aligned to the Personal and Family Histories unit of work that we have been studying. We thought it would also be a nice way to celebrate the end of our first term of learning by also having a Kindergarten morning tea. The children have been working on many tasks throughout the term to develop a “Me and My Family History” narrative booklet. This will be a keepsake that the children can take home to share with other relatives. As part of the unit of work it is very important for the children to learn about how they can share their own stories about their life through drawings and personal narratives that they have independently written. We would encourage your attendance on this special morning so the children can share their personal history with you through their stories.
