THE BRIEF

(+44) 01747 858100

With lighting amounting to 80% of a typical warehouse’s energy usage, the challenge was to make such a large space as sustainable as possible. Primark took the first step towards this goal, by opting for LED, which offers up to 60% reductions in energy consumption compared to fluorescent sources.

As the majority of Dexeco’s LED luminaires are manufactured using the latest 3535 Lumileds chips offering 90% lumen maintenance and 60,000 operating hours, the new installation would run with minimal maintenance costs and avoid disruptions caused by frequent lamp replacements.

Covering a 1.1million sq ft. the warehouse was composed of different areas including loading bays, racking aisles, offices, staff facilities (including a fitness room), which were intended to be used round the clock at varying times. A flexible solution using a wide variety of carefully selected products was therefore needed to provide the right lighting conditions in each area, with luminaires operating only where and when required.

Daylight, presence detection sensors and easily accessible dimming controls were essential to the design, to maximise energy savings and ensure task appropriate light levels at each location throughout the day.

To maintain a safe, comfortable and productive working environment, the installation would be designed following L2 building guidelines, using carefully selected ECA compliant products. Dexeco’s range of LED products go beyond the ECA’s seal of quality assurance and provide efficacy ratings that more than comfortably satisfy all performance requirements. By selecting products on the Energy Technology Criteria List (ECTL), Primark would not only reduce its carbon footprint, but significantly lower its utility bills and Carbon Reduction Commitment scheme payments, whilst giving a positive publicity message by adopting best sustainable practice.

Full emergency lighting coverage was also to be provided in compliance with sector-specific regulations.

Verteco LED – High Level Racking AislesWith a proven track-record of excellent performance, simple installation, significant energy reduction and rapid return on investment, the VertECO LED has secured its place as the industry leading energy-saving lighting solution in the UK for over 5 years.

To maximise visual comfort without compromising on light intensity, the Verteco LED utilises a mid-power LED chip board as opposed to high-output sources commonly seen in most high bays on the market.

The LED source is combined with a high-transmission diffuser to allow both glare reduction and optimal LORs to be maintained in outputs as high as 32,000lm. This glare-limiting optic design protects forklift drivers and staff requiring access to goods stored at high levels from hazardous glare whilst maintaining maximum visibility.

For both the high racking aisles and open spaces, over 1600 Verteco LED luminaires were supplied in 13,200 lumen output versions, with ultra high rack optics to achieve a uniform and controlled light distribution.

Luminaires were provided with integral passive infra-red R14 sensors offering daylight regulation, presence detection, and user-friendly remote control for simple and accurate commissioning at heights of 4 to 18m. The R14 sensor can be customised with a series of lens types (Narrow, Wide, Ultra-Wide) to provide the right detection range for each area.

To add to the low-maintenance benefits of its Lumileds LEDs, the Verteco’s Philip’s outdoor driver offers a constant lumen output feature which eliminates lumen depreciation of the source over the luminaire’s entire lifetime, further reducing the need for re-servicing at such high and inconvenient locations.

EcoPack LED – Mezzanine Storage AreasA total of 10,000 Ecopack LED batten luminaires were supplied for the three mezzanine storage floors. To boost energy savings by up to 30% for a faster return on investment, the luminaires were installed complete with integral R44 sensors for digital daylight and presence detection. Remote control programming was also made available to easily adjust the dimming and sensor functions as required. A range of sensors are also available with this product to tailor the detection functions to suit different mounting heights.

The highly efficient luminaire uses a high-transmission curved opal diffuser and the latest Lumileds LEDs to give high LORs, visual comfort, whilst performing at over 100 Llm/w. Built with versatility in mind, the EPK LED can be supplied in a wide range of lumen outputs from 2200 to 9000lm, lengths, and custom optics providing open area or narrow distributions to suit a variety applications.

Like the Verteco LED, the EPK is designed to simplify installation as much possible, with its separate gear spine and snap-in one piece gear tray and diffuser for easy mounting and practical suspension tags for hands-free electrical connection. The EPK LED steel construction and injection moulded polycarbonate end caps also protect the luminaire from the rigours of industrial facilities.

Protec LED Downlight – Corridors / Stairways / Amenities

Making full use of its wide range of customisable options, the Protec LED was adapted to serve multiple purposes. Built for versatility, the luminaire is available with a number of custom bezels, covers, interchangeable reflectors and colour attachments. BSEN 12464 glare complaint versions were supplied in the office areas, whilst the bathrooms required the luminaire to be silicon sealed to IP65 for added protection to water, dust, and dirt ingress.

With highly efficient reflectors (available in specular or semi-specular options), Lumileds LEDs, and Philips drivers, the luminaire offers LORs of over 90% in lumen outputs of up to 3000lm, offering the same or improved performance of fluorescent equivalents but at significantly lower power loads.

In the corridors and stairways, the luminaire was installed with standalone sensor and DALI dimming controls, offering a corridor mode which dims the lights to a safe 10% light output when areas are left unoccupied, to harvest further energy savings.

Installation was kept quick, simple and cost-effective thanks to the Protec’s practical four-point, self-clamping spring bracket which retains the fitting into the ceiling. The versatile luminaire is also suitable for plasterboard, mineral fibre and metal tile installation in ceiling thicknesses of up to 30mm.

MODLED Office – Offices

The MODLED Office was selected to provide Primark with a comfortably lit and productive office environment with the minimum luminaires and energy consumption for a short capital cost payback period. Purpose-built for office environments, the MODLED office achieves this by using a central micro prismatic optic for glare reduction, framed by a high-transmission opal diffuser to offer 93% diffusion of its high-output Lumileds LEDs. This dual optic design allows the installation to provide the 400 Lux recommended lux level for office areas using luminaire spacings as wide as 3 x 3m, whilst complying to BSEN 12464 glare limitations to support computer usage and ensure maximum visual clarity staff. By meeting these requirements with an average luminaire efficacy of 100 Llm/W for lumen outputs of up to 11,000lm, the MODLED Office offers premium performance and a full compliance package to ECA, L2 and BSEN 12464 simultaneously.

The versatile luminaire is available in a wide range of options including 3 body sizes, emergency packages, sensor and dimming controls, and lay-in or pull-up installation formats to suit each application. Its minimalist design makes it adaptable to a host of environments for a modern and attractive finish.

Flexible and Dynamic Sensor Controls

With such a high number of luminaires fitted in the main warehouse area, luminaire’s with integral sensors helped speed up the installation process by eliminating the need for extra wiring (specify?). With every luminaire equipped with its own sensor, accurate “zoning” could be achieved, allowing the luminaires to be switched to full light level only when staff enter specific areas, as well as react to daylight levels across the warehouse.

In the offices and non-industrial circulation areas, standalone sensors were fitted in strategic locations to work in conjunction with the luminaires’ DALI dimming drivers and dedicated remote controls and wall switches.

Both the integral and standalone emergency drivers can be networked using a digitally addressable auto-test system which produces periodic status reports, allowing staff to easily monitor each luminaire’s energy-consumption, emergency lighting and system faults that may occur, at no extra cost.

Emergency Lighting

VertECO LED, EcoPack LED and MODLED Office were supplied with integral three-hour emergency packages, supported by the IP65 rated, self-contained 2.5w AME LED bulkhead, to provide greater emergency coverage at minimal maintenance. The 4w LED ‘Hanging Blade’ exit sign and EXI LED were used for all emergency exit signage across the premises.
