Suicide car bombing in Iraq kills upto 15, wounds 60

BAGHDAD, 5 May— Up to 15 people were killed and some 60 otherswounded in suicide car bomb attack on a group of a police force Thursdaymorning in Iraq’s central City of Hillah, a local police source said.

“The latest reports said that 15 were killed and 60 wounded by the suicidecar bomb attack in the City of Hillah,” the source from Hialla police toldXinhua on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak tothe media.

The attack occurred in the centre of Hillah, the capital City of BabylonProvince which locates some 90 km south of Baghdad, when the police wereon a morning shift, the source said.

Many of the killed and wounded were policemen and several cars andnearby shops were damaged in the blast, he said, adding the police force hascordoned off the area for investigation.

The attack came as the Iraqi security forces increased security alert inBaghdad and other Iraqi cities as they expect deadly attacks to be carried outby alQaeda militants in retaliation for the killing of al-Qaeda head Osama BinLaden in Pakistan. designer Sukhoi had recently carried out test flightsof its first series-produced Su-35S Flanker-E fighter,state-owned RIA Novosti reported Thursday.

The new multi-role fighter was of the “4++generation using fifth-generation technology,” theagency said. The aircraft spent 90 min in the airtesting propulsion and control systems after it tookoff from the Komsomolsk-on-Amour airfield inRussia’s Far East.

The Su-35 Flanker-E superiority fighter canreportedly engage several air targets simultaneouslyusing both guided and unguided missiles andweapon systems. The fighter is powered by two117S engines.

The Su-35 follows the famous Su-27 and featuresa new navigation and attack system, a missilesearch and guide radar placed between the engines,more power, and a fuselage-based IR search systemfor missiles. NASA: Blown circuit foundin shuttle fuse box

CAPE CANAVERAL, 5 May—NASA says a switchbox removed from space shuttle Endeavour has ablown circuit.

The repair work is taking longer than expected.That means Endeavour’s launch on the next-to-lastshuttle flight may face yet another delay. NASAcurrently is targeting a launch for next Tuesday atthe earliest.

Endeavour was supposed to blast off last Friday.But fuel-line heaters did not turn on during the finalpart of the countdown. The problem was traced tothe switch box. A replacement was installedWednesday, but more testing is needed.

Scientists set to study Pacific rimearthquake risks

WELLINGTON, 5 May—Portable seismographswill be installed at 900locations in NewZealand’s lower NorthIsland as part of a studyto help scientists betterunderstand earthquakehazards in the PacificRegion.

The miniature quakerecorders will be buriedat regular intervals,some just 100 metresapart, in a 100-km lineand scientists will thendetonate explosives indeep bore holes tomeasure the soundwaves being reflectedback from rock inter-faces deep under-ground.

The 21-day project,scheduled to begin on 2May, involves scientistsfrom Wellington-basedVictoria University, NewZealand Institute of

Geological and NuclearSciences GNS Science),Tokyo University andthe University ofSouthern California.

The study will focuson the boundarybetween the Pacific andAustralian tectonicplates that lie just 20 to30 km beneath thesouthern North Island.

Professor Tim Stern,from Victoria’s Instituteof Geophysics, said theproject was one of thelargest of its kind to becarried out in NewZealand.

“The seismographswill tell us about thethickness andmechanical state of rockunits beneath the seismicline down to depths of50 kilometres or more,”he said.

The data would helpbuild a high resolution

three-dimensional image of therock structures and the tectonicplate boundary in the region.

The project will be one ofthe biggest temporarydeployments of seismicequipment in New Zealand’shistory.

It will also be the first timethe boundary zone of the twotectonic plates under the regionaround New Zealand’s Capital,Wellington, has been studiedin such detail.

But the costs of the acquisitionhave been mounting for Bharti as ithas been investing heavily in the loss-making firm since June and hasstruggled to integrate it into itsbusiness. The performance, which wasalso hit by costs of buying third-generation mobile (3G) spectrum inIndia, undershot market expectationsthat Bharti would post around a 17billion rupee net profit for the fiscalfourth quarter.

Bharti shares initially fell 2.54percent to 360.20 rupees on the resultsin early trade but then retraced to sit1.64 percent down at 363.55 rupees.

CHICAGO, 5 May—Breast shields are the best way toprotect the breasts of women from radiation exposurewhile they have a chest CT examination, according toa new study. The researchers compared a breast shieldwith a new technique called posteriorly centered partialCT, in which the CT scanner turns on and off as it scansthe patient.

For each approach, the team at Penn State HersheyMedical Centre measured the radiation dose to the frontand back of an object called a breast phantom, whichmimics the size of the breast area of a woman. “Wefound that posteriorly centreed partial CT does decreaseskin entrance radiation dose to the breast by 16 percent,but increases overall radiation dose to the chest by 8percent,” lead author Dr Rafel Tappouni said in anAmerican Roentgen Ray Society news release.

Housing financer Freddie Mac returns toprofit

WASHINGTON, 5 May — The USgovernment-controlled housing financerFreddie Mac reported its first quarterlyprofit in three and a half years Wednesday,after years of losses on its huge mortgageportfolio.

ZURICH, 5 May— Global reinsurance giant SwissRe reported a first quarter loss on Thursday as itsresults were hit by exceptionally high claims fornatural disaster damage including the giant earth-quake and tsunami in Japan. Australian police charge four in recordseizure of methamphetamine valued at

$54 million

CANBERRA, 5 May—Australian police seized a record 527 pounds (239kilogrammes) of the illicit drug methamphetamine smuggled from Europeand have charged four suspects, officials said Thursday.

The four men — two Australians, a Belgian and a Dutchman — face amaximum penalty of life in prison over the drug haul, which police value at50 million Australian dollars ($54 million).

The suspects were arrested in Sydney and the western coastal city of Perthin operations starting in late March. They have been charged with traffickingcommercial quantities of a controlled drug, also known as ice, and possessionof the drug, Australian Federal Police said in a statement.

Assistant Commissioner Kevin Zuccato alleged the 41-year-old Belgianand the 43-year-old Dutchman — whose names have not been released — ranthe operation from Sydney’s upscale eastern beachside suburbs on behalf ofa global syndicate.

Honda adds 833,000 vehicles toairbag recall

DETROIT, 5 May—Honda Motor CoLtd expanded an earlier recall of Hondaand Acura vehicles over airbags thatcould deploy with too much pressure,causing injuries or fatalities, thecompany said.

The expanded recall adds more than833,000 vehicles for the model years2001 through 2003.

Some of these vehicles containreplacement airbags that could containthe defect. Honda is looking for 2,430replacement airbags that could containthe defect, but could not locate them all,leading to the large recall.

This is the fourth time Honda haswidened its airbag recall. The first recallrelated to this issue was in 2008.

The number of vehicles affectednow stands at 1.65 million, according tofigures reported to the National HighwayTraffic Safety Administration.

These additional vehicles were not

included in earlier safety recalls becausethe original airbag modules on thedriver’s side were not affected by theissue. But replacement airbags couldcontain the defect, Honda said.

Honda told safety regulators thatjust 0.29 percent of the affected vehiclesare likely to contain the defect.

In certain vehicles, excess pressurecould cause the airbag inflator to rupture.Metal fragments could pass through theairbag cushion material causing injuryor even a fatality. A “small number” ofinjuries and two fatalities are linked tothe airbag recalls, Honda spokeswomanChristina Ra said. These were not recentand did not kick off this move, Ra said.

The recall includes some 2001 and2002 Accord and Civic sedans, 2002Odyssey minivans and 2002 and 2003CR-V crossover vehicles. It alsoincludes 2002 and 2003 Acura 3.2 TLand 2003 3.2 CL vehicles.—Reuters

LONDON, 5 May—A recent study has found that people who play soccer computergames are more aggressive than those playing other violent games like war games.It explained that while participants remain ‘numb’ when they see someone being‘killed’ on screen, apparently harmless games that mirror real life can have a far greatereffect. MEXICO CITY, 5 May—China has become one ofthe most important investors in Latin America andthe Caribbean accounting for almost 9 percent ofthe total investment flow to the region in 2010, theUnited Nations Economic Commission for LatinAmerica and the Caribbean (ECLAC) said onWednesday.

“In 2010 Chinese companies invested about 15billion US dollars in countries in Latin America andthe Caribbean, basically through mergers andacquisitions,” said the ECLAC in a new reportpublished here Wednesday.

It said that more than 90 percent of Chineseinvestments in Latin America have been used towardthe extraction of natural resources, especially inmining, but China is expected to start diversifyinginvestments into a lot of new areas in the years tocome.

“In the medium term it is expected that thetransnational companies of that country (China)will continue to reach the region and that theydiversify towards the infrastructure andmanufacturing sectors,” it added.

The ECLAC said that the flows of investment isreinforcing the production of specialized items inthe region, but it did not provide any example ofthis.

The woman, 70, was hospitalized for foodpoisoning and fell into a serious condition aftereating a raw meat dish at an outlet of the Yakiniku-izakaya Ebisu chain in Tonami, Toyama Prefecture,on 23 April, according to Kyodo News.

She was a family member of another woman inher 40s who dined with her and died Wednesday.

In addition to the two women, two boys inToyama and Fukui prefectures also died in April inthe food poisoning cases involving the restaurantchain operator, Foods Forus Co, based in Kanazawa,Ishikawa Prefecture.

The restaurant chain has admitted that it hadfailed for the last two years to conduct hygieneinspections of raw meat supplied for the dish by aTokyo-based wholesaler.

MEXICO CITY, 5 May—Mexican rescuers havefound five bodies out of the 14 miners who weretrapped underground on Tuesday after a gasexplosion in a coal mine in northern CoahuilaState, authorities said Wednesday.

Mexico’s Labour Minister Javier Lozano saidthe possibility that the remaining 9 miners trappedabout 60 metres underground are still alive is“close to nil” but stressed that rescue efforts willcontinue.

MOSCOW, 5 May—The qualification competitionsfor the World Chess Cup kicked off in Kazan, capitalof Russia’s Tatarstan republic, on Thursday. Thepresident of World Chess Federation (FIDE) KirsanIlyumzhinov said that chess players would participatein the qualifying tournament until 26 May.

SCIENCE DAILY, 5 May— Evolution is provid-ing the inspiration for University of Adelaide com-puter science research to find the best placement ofturbines to increase wind farm productivity.

Senior Lecturer Dr Frank Neumann, fromthe School of Computer Science, is using a "selectionof the fittest" step-by-step approach called "evolu-tionary algorithms" to optimise wind turbine place-ment. This takes into account wake effects, theminimum amount of land needed, wind factors andthe complex aerodynamics of wind turbines.

“Renewable energy is playing an increasingrole in the supply of energy worldwide and will helpmitigate climate change,” says Dr Neumann. “To furtherincrease the productivity of wind farms, we need toexploit methods that help to optimise their performance.”
