Nanoengineers invent biomaterial thatclosely mimics human tissue

WASHINGTON, 1 June — Nano-engineers have invented a newbiomaterial designed for repairingdamaged human tissue, and it closelymimics the properties of native humantissue. The invention from nano-engineers at the University ofCalifornia, San Diego, marks asignificant breakthrough in tissueengineering, as the biomaterial doesnot wrinkle up when it is stretched.

Shaochen Chen, professor in theDepartment of NanoEngineering atthe UC San Diego Jacobs School ofEngineering, hopes future tissuepatches, which are used to repairdamaged heart walls, blood vesselsand skin, for example, will be morecompatible with native human tissuethan the patches available today.

The new biomaterial was created

using a new biofabrication platformthat Chen is developing under a four-year, 1.5 million dollar grant from theNational Institutes of Health.

This biofabrication technique useslight, precisely controlled mirrors anda computer projection system shinedon a solution of new cells and polymersto build three-dimensional scaffoldswith well-defined patterns of any shapefor tissue engineering.

“We are also exploring otheropportunities. It’s a new material. Ithink it’s just a matter of time beforemore people will pick up and findapplications for it in defence, energyand communications, for instance,”Chen said. His findings were publishedin a recent issue of the journalAdvanced Functional Materials.

Flying wind turbines can provide 100 times morepower than globally used

LONDON, 1 June — Scientists have estimatedthat wind turbines that fly, swoop and float have theability to provide 100 times more the amountneeded to power the whole world annually. Flying, swooping and floating turbines are being developedto turn high-altitude winds into electricity. CristinaArcher, an atmospheric scientist at the CaliforniaState University in Chico, said there’s “not a doubtanymore” that high-altitude winds will be tappedfor power.

Fort Felker at the National Renewable EnergyLaboratory said the industry is 10 years away frommaking a meaningful contribution to the nation’selectricity demands. which is developing a “flying electric generator”.The lure of high-altitude wind is simple: Wind

speed generally increases with its height above theground as surface friction diminishes. Each time windspeed doubles, the amount of energy it theoreticallyholds multiplies by eight times. The world’s mostpowerful winds circulate in the jet streams, which arefound four to 10 miles off the ground and carry windsthat regularly break 100 miles per hour. The dream isto eventually tap the jet streams, but high-altitudewind companies are focusing for now below a 2,000-foot ceiling, above which complex federal air-spacerestrictions kick in. Adam Rein, co-founder of theBoston company Altaeros Energies, said his companycalculates winds at the 2,000 foot level are up to 20times stronger than winds that can be reached by atypical 350-foot land turbine.

“They are projecting crazy numbers. I’m notsaying that it’s true. But it’s really the lowest, thecheapest energy source, possibly,” the Daily Mailquoted Archer as saying.—Internet

Modest vitamin and mineral deficiencymay lead to age-related diseases

WASHINGTON, 1 June— A new study has found that even moderatedeficiency of the vitamins and minerals required for life may lead to age-related diseases.

Scientists from the Nutrition and Metabolism Centre at Children’s HospitalOakland Research Institute in Oakland, California showed that damagecaused due to lack of vitamins and minerals accumulates over time and leadsto age-related diseases.

Joyce C McCann, a co-author of the study, and colleagues tested whetherselenium-dependent proteins that are essential from an evolutionary perspectiveare more resistant to selenium deficiency than those that are less essential.

They discovered a highly sophisticated array of mechanisms at cellularand tissue levels that, when selenium is limited, protect essential selenium-dependent proteins at the expense of those that are nonessential.

They also found that mutations in selenium-dependent proteins that arelost on modest selenium deficiency result in characteristics shared by age-related diseases including cancer, heart disease, and loss of immune or brainfunction. The study was published online in the FASEB Journal.—Internet

PARIS, 1 June—France won’t abandon nuclearpower, but will enhance nuclear safety management, government officials said Tuesday.

Eric Besson, minister of Industry, Energy andDigital Economy, said in an interview with the Frenchdaily La Liberation that the halt of nuclear power willincrease consumption of traditional energy resourceslike coal and natural gas.

This will cause an increase in greenhouse gasemissions, and raise the amounts and prices of importednuclear power, Besson said.

The minister said France isn’t isolated in itsstance, as countries like the United States, someemerging countries, and even Japan after its latestmassive nuclear accident, also chose to continueusing nuclear energy.
