In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of media products?

On my magazine, I included a medium close up shot of a students, the same as they

have used on the Men’s Health magazine page. Both images take up most of the page to

show what they are representing, one being a student and the other a

celebrity body builder. Another similarity is the consistent colour scheme. They both

contain a range of black, red and grey colour tones to appeal

to the target audience. However, Men’s Health

magazine also uses a bright yellow colour to make some

information stand out.

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of media products?

The differences between 6 life and Men’s Health magazine is that my masthead is included in the top left hand corner whereas the other one is included across the magazine. The image on Mens Health is covering the masthead a bit which I have not done because I want everyone to see what the title of this magazine is. Furthermore I have used a range of fonts to appeal to all the audience however Men’s Health uses a consistent font.

My contents page uses quite a few of the same conventions as a professional magazine such as the use of the date, features and regulars. I have used the same colour scheme of black, white and red to go with the front cover. The word CONTENT is in bold on both pages to stand out and capture the readers eye. Underneath each heading, I have written a synopsis of what each page is about which is the same on the professional magazine. Both pages also have large images to show some of the key features so people can easily flick to the most appealing pages and what’s new. The two headings show clearly what the features and regulars are.

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of media products?

One way which I have challenged conventions is by the amount of pictures added. In the professional magazine, only two pictures have been utilised where as in my magazine I have included 5 different pictures to show more of an insight in the magazine. I have also included a website in 6life so people can see how to access more information.

• Transferring media from still camera to computer using a USB port.

• Using Adobe Photoshop – inserting images and making them fit proportionally into a frame

and resizing them without stretching them.

• How to use Adobe Photoshop and In Design effectively to add text, shapes (flashes), pictures and change colours of fonts etc (swatches).

• Understanding how layers work on photoshop.

• Drop shadow on texts e.g. to make my masthead stand out more.

• Making pictures or text spaced out exactly using the align tool.

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

One thing I learnt about technologies throughout this process is how to transfer pictures to the computer. I used a digital Sony camera to take the images I needed and as it has a large memory capacity it meant that I could take as much pictures as I needed to. Digital cameras also have a USB port which means you can easily connect them to a computer which is what I did. From then you can insert them into the two programmes I used, Photoshop or InDesign where you can edit the pictures and place them where suitable.

Photoshop is a programme I have used before, however I have not used all the features such as the Polygonal lasso tool. This tool allowed me to draw around the image, to get rid of the background so I can have an image by itself. I wanted this because looking at most of the other magazine pages, most of them have an image with a white background so I wanted mien to look as professional as possible.

This is the text tool used in Photoshop. I used this tool quite a lot as I needed to write quite a lot of things on the magazine page . It showed me options such as editing the font type and colour of each text.

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

The layers tool is a really useful item to use in photoshop because you can easily delete items you don’t want or put one item before the other.

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

It was the first time I ever used the programme InDesign which meant everything was new to me. I mostly used the text tool which meant just using a text book and typing but with adding a picture you had to use a different type of box. You then had to click file and place and select the picture you want to add.
