The South East Police Motorcycle Rodeo committee is hosting the 2016 police motorcycle skills rodeo on April 23 2016 from 800 AM ndash 400 PM Join us for this fun-filled day to support COPS Organization There will be a Silent Auction Sponsor Booths and a Kids Zone The event is free to the public

The purpose of this event is for the motorcycle law enforcement officers who participate to become more proficient and safe while working on a motorcycle The competing motorcycle officers hail from agencies all throughout South Florida and various agencies throughout the United States Following the event an Awards Banquet will be held that evening

The event raises money for the charity COPS (Concerns of Police Survivors) COPS is an organization dedicated to helping families who have lost loved ones in the line of duty This organization assists families with money education housing and support for the members left behind due to the tragedy of a law enforcement officers death Over $40000 was raised to support COPS during the 2015 rodeo Several thousand dollars were also raised for other South Florida charities including Tamarac Explorers Miramar Explorers Seminole PD Explorers Codyrsquos Angels Towers With a Heart and more

On a cool almost rainy Saturday evening in March an outstanding lineup took the stage at the Amp From the opening performance by Yaumlrdij to the late evening guitar wizardry of Coco Montoya the crowd was spellbound

Real FloridaTake a trip to Floridas oldest inland town

Micanopy established in 1821 offers a wealth of fun and history from the canopy of majestic moss-draped oaks to unique and varied shops William Bartram a noted author and naturalist visited the area in 1774 and described it as an Edenic land of ldquoElysian fields and green plainsrdquo The town also has links to President Taylor who built a fort in the area during the 2nd Seminole War in 1835 Recent archaeological findings have uncovered the locations of two forts as well as two battlefields dating to the conflict

Micanopy was rebuilt after the Seminole war and by the 1880s the area became known as the leading orange and vegetable growing area of Florida Many of the larger surviving homes (see below) reflect this previous era The historic district encompasses 38 buildings that are on the National Register of Historic Places

Micanopy is located just south of Gainesville east of I-75 and is a must see for anyone looking to discover the Real Florida For more information visit micanopychambercom

Micanopy is Floridas self-proclaimed antiques capital Named in honor of a Seminole Indian chief and settled in 1821 this Alachua County town ndash about 15 minutes south of Gainesville ndash features dozens of antiques shops many on tree-lined Cholokka Boulevard The street also is the site of the townrsquos annual Fall Harvest Festival ndash think music and crafts The scene is heavy on greenery making it a pleasant spot to while away an afternoon beneath the oaks In addition the nearby Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park allows you to spot bison (yes bison) and wild horses from a 50-foot-high observation tower

Lauren Mitchell is charming even via email When we asked if 1000 am was too early for an interview we were treated to her throaty laugh and proclamation that she expected to be sufficiently caffeinated by then And indeed she was

Tell us a little more about growing up in a musical family Wow It was pretty amazing I remember hearing my grandparents (on my momrsquos side) they always had an organ in their home and Grandma could play and Grandpa could play a little bit - church songs old hymns and both of them and my mother sang in our church choir in Ohio so that seemed the most natural place to play in front of humans for me I remember [the first time I sang in public] I was 7 or 8 years old I remember being nervous but yoursquore in a church and you know everybody and theyrsquore all smiling at you and they love you

Do you remember thinking at the time ldquoI can do thisrdquo I donrsquot remember but everyone would praise me and compliment me Itrsquos always been a very natural thing for me to do I started voice lessons at the age of 9 My mom put me in voice lessons when it became apparent that I had some ability and I enjoyed doing it As a child it was definitely ndash everything was music-related in one way or another All different kinds of dance lots of ballet and that kind of thing I found that I had an affinity for tap dance I still like to watch it I still love it I took piano lessons I played a clarinet Theater classes Everything seemed to revolve around performance and one way or another music was involved

Do you have siblings Yes I have a younger brother hersquos 2 frac12 years younger than me Hersquos a visual artist he does graphic design

Where do you live now Whatrsquos that like Sarasota-Bradenton Itrsquos really wonderful over here - we have such a great music scene all the way up and down this coast Therersquos a wonderful blues and soul scene and also a wonderful cultural scene with the Sarasota Opera [which is] amazing and wersquove got a great ballet over here

If you could meet one musician from the past who would it be Oh You can stop right now It would be Etta James hands down Whenever I get asked that question that is always the answer She was one of the finest soul singers ever to walk the face of this earth That personality ndash she didnrsquot take any baloney from anybody and I would have loved to have met her back in the day

professional image It is already being sabotaged to some degree by the current trend of ldquobusiness casualrdquo There are several ways that you can maintain your image and comfort while looking polished and professional

Bare shoulders low-cut tops naked upper arms and legs will never be perceived as professional for women in the office A sleeveless dress works well with a jacket to throw on for a more polished look Men can also achieve a professional look in the office by adding a jacket for meetings or presentations taking their jackets off and rolling up their sleeves just above the elbow when at their desk Investing in appropriate office wear with good quality loose fit and a cool fabric will give you the ability to layer and will certainly enhance a cool attitude

Summer is the time when you should reassess the way you dress Lean more toward a suit with an A-line or flip skirt Remember that blouses may be worn as jackets and pants should be unlined and have a slightly loose fit While in fashion at the moment figure hugging tops and body suits are not as cool as garments which allow air to flow freely past your skin

Cotton wool linen and silk are just a few natural fibers that promote comfort in extreme temperatures Garments made from these fibers breathe acting as a natural form of climate control and relieving your body of accumulated heat thus reducing the risk of excessive perspiration Of course the weight of any material also has to be taken into consideration which means that any of the fabrics mentioned above as ldquocoolrdquo need to be lightweight and loose fitted if they are to be comfortable in hot weather

Beating the heat means choosing clothing styles that reduce bulk and maximize your professional appearance That translates into single-breasted jackets short-sleeve blouses medium-low necklines less structured garments sheer hosiery and minimal accessories I suggest wearing jackets that are short sleeved and either unlined or partially lined to reduce heat Even if the outer fabric is cool when the lining is synthetic it will be hot and uncomfortable to wear Be sure to always buy the best quality you can afford as high

quality non-lined jackets have specially finished seams and will not ravel

By incorporating these tips you may see dynamic changes in how you are perceived by others in the workplace and you are more likely to get the results you want every day

ploy can be trickier and you may feel like a juggler but you can do it When the voluminous relative walks by ndash drop your handkerchief ask about his new shoes ndash you get the gistdistract distract and then distract some more

The final most precarious step is the real hook and it takes a little psychological jump on your part ndash so bear with me - why is Uncle Denny the way he is Is he really rude Does he know hersquos being that loud Does he miss Aunt Marge so he fills spaces of silence with bad-mannered jibber-jabber You get the drift

When my first two sons were three and one years old my husband and I received the diagnosis that my oldest son had autism As parents we were initially crushed We went through a period of disbelief and were depressed I did not understand how this

could happen to ldquomy sonrdquo

We were so scared that our younger son also had autism When he continued to progress without signs of the disorder we were ecstatic

A few years later my husband and I decided to try for a girl (although we would be happy with a healthy baby of any sex) and when I was just a few weeks pregnant I received the shock of my life when I was informed that I was carrying twins Seven months later (yes they were preemies) two beautiful boys were born Yes four boys When the twins were two years old we were advised that they had autism as well Again my husband and I were in disbelief depressed and could not understand how three of our children had autism

Most parents of children with autism go through similar emotions when they first receive the diagnosis We were fortunate that when we received the diagnosis for the twins we already were familiar with this disorder and knew where to turn and what treatments to begin All of our sons went to various therapies and when they were three began school

When dealing with the diagnosis it was hard to find support Our families did support us but they did not understand autism so they really could not provide us with advice throughout

I do not think there is anything that is typical

when speaking about autismour journey The greatest form of support we have received is from parents of other children with autism It is comforting to speak to someone that understands the disorder and how it impacts everyday life The funny thing I have learned talking to parents is how different the disorder is for every child Yes there are some commonalities but overall I believe that the disorder manifests itself so differently in each child I do not think there is anything that is ldquotypicalrdquo when speaking about autism

If your child has received this diagnosis my best advice to you is talk to people your family your friends and others who have children with autism I have seen many parents try to deal with this diagnosis in isolation You should not try to embark on or continue this journey yourself

Take the kids camping - or at least on a day trip - to a state park

One of my favorite things to do is travel across Florida to discover all of the statersquos hidden gems and spotlighted places I have found that visiting state parks are a wonderful way to experience Floridarsquos natural beauty and connect with its environment

Open year-round and with over 150 state parks there is no shortage of fun and educational activities to keep the calendar full While each park offers its own menu of activities such as kayaking swimming horseback riding and camping of course the state parks are consistently well maintained and visitor friendly In 1999 2005 and 2013 the National Recreation and Park Association recognized the Florida State Park system as the best state park system in the United States Several of our state parks are home to National Natural Landmarks but to visit one will require a short road trip A short trip west to Fakahatchee Strand Preserve State Park in Collier County will reward you with a view of cypress forest from the Big Cypress Bend Boardwalk My wife and I visited Weeki Wachee Springs State Park on our honeymoon and a few years later we ventured to Silver Springs State Park to celebrate our anniversary Now I live just 18 miles north of Edward Ball Wakulla Springs State Park and I canrsquot wait to visit it I appreciate the beauty that the Atlantic Ocean brings to the South Florida landscape but for a change in scenery that rivals the ocean visit one of these springs

For a more local state park outing try Oleta River State Park in North Miami Beach John U Lloyd Beach State Park in Dania Beach Hugh Taylor Birch State Park in Fort Lauderdale and John D MacArthur Beach State

Florida has over 150 state parks in 2013 our park system was recognized as the best state park system

in the United States

Park in North Palm Beach Renting a kayak and experiencing the park from the water is an enjoyable way to beat the heat during the hot summer months

As for camping in one of Floridarsquos state parks you will find RV camping cabins lodges primitive camping boat camping (yes boat camping) and equestrian camping

How old were you when you first picked up a basketball I was eight years old and I retired at 38

The Alonzo and Tracy Mourning Senior High School has quickly become one of the most highly regarded schools in the country To what do you attribute that Good staff good leadership Lisa Garcia is an amazing leader and shersquos put together an amazing staff and provides all of the necessary direction and creates the best atmosphere for these kids to be productive and flourish

You and Tracy must be very proud of Trey whorsquos at your alma mater Was he always interested in languages His [high school] alma mater is Ransom Everglades He goes to Georgetown Portuguese and Spanish are two of his favorite languages

You have one daughter Myka ndash what impact do you think Tracyrsquos community efforts such as Honey Shine have had on Myka When we think about our kids theyrsquore influenced by all of our actions Me and my wife what we do theyrsquore influenced by that because theyrsquore around it on a daily basis They understand the importance of giving back becoming active participants in making the community better because we made that part of their lives From the Honey Child perspective my wife works with the young girls to help them understand the importance of taking care of their bodies and making the right decisions as young women That has definitely been an influence on my daughter as well

Alijah is just six ndash as the youngest child does he get spoiled as the ldquobabyrdquo of the family All of our kids are spoiled and we have a pretty sizable family so all of them are spoiled but they also have their priorities straight and understand the importance of being humbled and the importance of being thankful

Whatrsquos your favorite thing to do when you have downtime ndash if you have any When we have downtime we like to spend time at the beach And we travel a little bit

Whatrsquos your favorite place to travel The Caribbean Itrsquos right in our backyard so we love the Caribbean

What is your once piece of advice to a young basketball player just starting his NBA career Go to school Basketball isnrsquot guaranteed I know there are a lot of kids out there that have professional aspirations But you have a better chance of being a team doctor or team attorney or team broadcaster than you do of becoming a professional athlete Never stop aspiring to be a professional athlete if thatrsquos what you want to do but also understand that you create other options for yourself to still be connected with professional athletics by going to school and getting an education

As a professional athlete sometimes things happen that arenrsquot to our control I know Chris Bosh is going through a similar situation to what you did What is your advice for him My only advice is to prioritize your health more than anything Basketball again is temporary Hersquos got a family to raise Thatrsquos our focus right there Just to make sure hersquos healthy

Tell us a little bit about the Mourning Family Foundation The Mourning Family Foundation was established in lsquo97 and the focus is to provide educational opportunities for children and families from very low socioeconomic areas taking a holistic approach towards the development of these young people understanding that all of these kids have the ability they just donrsquot have the resources and trying to provide as many resources as possible

Of your many incredible accomplishments both on and off the court what are you most proud of Irsquom most proud of the work we do with our foundation itrsquos significant work because wersquore changing lives for the better Basketball again is temporary Obviously it opened up opportunities and created a pretty comfortable lifestyle for myself and my family But basketball is not forever I think that the legacy that we leave through the support we provide to young people and their families ndash thatrsquos what we want to be remembered for thatrsquos the legacy we want to leave because itrsquos something that theyrsquoll never forget and hopefully itrsquos somewhat like a cycle ndash you give to others and they wonrsquot forget it and it encourages them to make a difference in someone elsersquos life

When I think of camping the first thing that comes to mind is lobster in Maine Growing up in the northeast I never realized that the majority of the population in the United States considered lobster to be something most often ordered in restaurants on special occasions I took it for granted that was what families brought along on camping trips to kick off the first night of the adventure

Once the pop up camper was set my grandfather would get out the portable gas stove and start a pot of water boiling It was just what we did when I was a kid Once dinner was ready we all sat around a fire and happily devoured those little crustaceans along with corn on the cob and sometimes even littleneck steamed clams that were dipped in melted butter The rest of the meals included the usual hot dogs toasted marshmallows on a stick and suchhellipbut Irsquoll always remember the lobster I donrsquot go camping anymore so thoughts of those times now provide me the memories of quality days spent with relatives that are now either long since gone or those that I donrsquot currently spend nearly enough time with due to geographical distance between us And it makes me a bit melancholy if Irsquom honest Because even if we attempted to recreate such an event itrsquos likely that such moments would never equal the original times spent together

I do yearn for the occasional nostalgic moment Is it even possible to go on a weeklong vacation without Wi-Fi connectivity anymore Or leave the laptop and iPad on the desk at home

Sure I know that millions of people still go camping on a regular basis But itrsquos not MY idea of camping so in my mind itrsquos just not ever going to be as good as it was when I was a kid We went to so many different places and explored territories that no one had ever ventured to My cousins and I climbed hills in the woods better than any mountaineer we barrel-rolled down sand dunes on the Cape and washed our hair in icy cold streams Idyllic but then again these are all selective details Irsquove kept in my head

Maybe the territories had actually been ventured into before And maybe the barrel rolls werenrsquot such a good idea since it took us three days to wash all that sand out of our hair One could argue that those times canrsquot be recreated But now consider that they donrsquot have to be If camping could just

be interpreted to loosely translate into time when we break away from the norm If it gets us away from our daily routine and provides us the opportunity to create wonderful times to reflect on whatrsquos important well then letrsquos just say wersquore camping

Havenrsquot been able to find the time or money to rent that cabin in the Blue Ridge Mountains No matter Why not pick up a pop-up tent and pitch it on the beach for a couple of hours when the sun starts to set Bring a deck of cards a blanket and teach your daughter how to play ldquogo fishrdquo

The point is donrsquot wait for the sun and the stars to align themselves to provide that special moment in time that will be remembered for years to come Too many days can pass us by and then they quickly turn into years if we let them

Choose to make time that you will fondly remember twenty years from now Just donrsquot wait any longer and put it off to one day soon That one day soon is now So make it happen

And on that note Irsquom off to call my uncle to see when we can arrange a lobster date and talk about those good old days on the Cape
