September is Classical Music Month. Beethoven, anyone? The September birthstone is the sapphire. According to the American Gem Society (americangemsociety.org), “medieval clergy wore sapphires to symbolize heaven, while commoners thought the gem attracted heavenly blessings.” The September flower is, of course, the beautiful aster.

Mexican Independence Day This day is known as “Grito de Dolores, or “the shout of Dolores.” On this day, in the small town of Dolores, Mexico, Roman Catholic Priest Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla exhorted his congregation to revolt against the Spanish. This date marks the beginning of the war for independence which began in 1810 and did not end until 1821.
Banned Websites Awareness Day To raise awareness of the overly restrictive blocking of legitimate, educational websites and academically useful social networking tools in schools and school libraries, AASL has designated one day during Banned Books Week as Banned Websites Awareness Day. On Wednesday, September 24, AASL (the American Association of School Librarians) is asking school librarians and other educators to promote an awareness of how overly restrictive filtering affects student learning.

America's Boating Course is the mainstay of our squadron's existence. It is a traditional civic service of the United States Power Squadron organization. In preparation for this column, we embarked on an Internet journey through the world of pet portraits (total hits, for those keeping
track: over eight million). We found a cleverly named site (Artful Dog) and several Etsy entries. Targeted search results (like it or not) are improving, however, and among these first “hits” was for Pompano artist Robin White.
Since Robin’s right here in Pompano Beach, we figured we’d found the perfect column subject, and began perusing the portraits in her online gallery. And – there they were – Frankie and Dion! Warning: Internet detour ahead.
Stay with us; we’ll be right back to Robin. On Facebook, Mark Zisk and I have 14 mutual friends. Geographically, the 14 of us are scattered from Fort Lauderdale all the way to Jupiter, and just about every place in between. But we’d bet that, in the actual world, we’re far fewer than six degrees of separation apart, given where Mark’s from, where he went to college, and where his parents once lived (Palm Aire). (Or, perhaps, everyone’s parents once lived in Palm Aire and we’re looking for additional coincidences where none exist.)One of the things all of us “Facebook friends” appear to have in common is a love of eastside living and – often - a keen (some might say stalker-ish) interest in Mark’s dogs, Frankie and Dion, although “dogs” seems such a pedestrian term for these two winsome, photo-ready models, both of whom (but Dion in particular) seem to live, just LIVE, for yet another photo op.
Recently, Dion passed away, having lived a long and clearly very fulfilling life. As a measure of his impact, upon his passing, one Facebook post included these words: “You literally brought hundreds of people together on Mark's FB page and in his life, you picked Mark and brought him lots of love and happiness.”
Indeed. We’re a little embarrassed about how avidly we followed the Adventures of Frankie and Dion, but they never failed to bring a smile to our face - and, when Dion crossed the Rainbow Bridge, a tear to our eye. Frankie, of course, was lonely. Enter Johnny. Now, thanks to Mark’s clearly kind heart and open, generous spirit, not only does Frankie have a new “brother,” but the rest of us get to look forward to vicariously enjoying the good life, as seen through the eyes of Mark, Frankie, and Johnny, beach aficionados all.
And now, back to Robin White. We reached out to this accomplished artist on – you guessed it! – Facebook – to ask if we could feature the portrait, and her response was almost immediate and generous: “Yes, that would be great. Let me know what you need. I have the painting as a high res (send your email and I can send to you)”. We love the internet (but you already knew that).
Robin’s portraits, in particular the portrait of Frankie and Dion, with whom we felt a special bond, are just astonishing. From Beagles to Goldens to Malteses to mixed breeds to Shih Tzus and everything in between, Robin’s work really captures the spirit of why we love, love, love our animals as we do. DRESSING FOR YOUR BODY TYPE: IT'S AN ART!
Most women realize that choosing clothes that are flattering to their body type is the best way to look great. If you do not pay attention to your body type nor know what it is, the result can be poorly assembled outfits that do not make you look your best.
The tips given here will give you the knowledge necessary to choose the right clothing for you in particular. You’ll be able to dress to flatter your body type easily, rather than staring into your closet wondering what to wear.
Bring Out Your Assets
No matter how many flaws you have or think you have, you also have assets. The best way to look great is to downplay your body flaws and accentuate your assets. For example, if you have great legs, but are a little heavy in the hips, opt for a slender skirt in a darker color to minimize your hips and still show off your nice legs.
Likewise, if you have a good chest and a not so great stomach... use a plunging neckline to show off your asset and distract from your little bulge. Find ways to draw attention to your best parts and you’ll find that you look and feel better.
Use Color to Change Shape
Your body is probably not perfect – not many are. But a little color goes a long way toward creating the look you want. Dark colors slim, while light colors tend to expand and bright colors draw attention. Use this to your advantage. If you have a pear-shaped body, with wide hips and a narrow top, try using dark-colored pants with a light top to balance things out. A bright scarf will draw attention away from the wider hips.
Find Flattering Cuts
When choosing pants, look for a cut that will enhance and balance your body type. A small waist and hips look great with tapered pant legs, while a large bottom can be slimmed by choosing a flared skirt or boot cut pants. Likewise, a crisscross or ruffled top will enhance a small chest by adding more bulk, while a plain shirt with only darts will look great on a larger chest. Peasant shirts, which are more flowing, flatter a smaller torso and fitted tops look better on larger women.
Use Accessories to Your Advantage
Accessories can be your best friend. Not only do they help distract from areas you don’t want people noticing, they can really add flair to your wardrobe and help you make your clothes look better on you. For example, if you are quite tall and want to look a little shorter, a wide belt can help create that illusion by providing a “cutting” line at your waist, which stops the eye.

Knowing how to choose clothes that enhance your body type will result in a boost in confidence. You’ll end up wearing outfits that look excellent on your body and leave you feeling great. The best way to get started is to use the above guidelines to get rid of any clothing that doesn’t suit your body type and then hit the stores to find something that does suit you. Kevin's Collard Green and Bean SoupIngredients
• 1 bag of collard greens• 1 can of kidney beans• 1 can of butter beans• 1 ham hock• 1 can of vegetable broth• 2 large carrots• 2 celery stalks• 2 tablespoons of White Garlic Balsamic*• 1 pinch of salt and a sprinkle of pepper

Directions
Pour the vegetable broth in a soup pot with the ham hock. Bring to a boil and let it cook for 10 minutes. Add 3-4 handfuls of collard greens chopped into bite size pieces. Let that boil for 5 or so minutes. Add both cans of beans, carrots and celery. Add 1-2 tablespoons of White Garlic Balsamic and cook until broth has a nice smoky taste and the greens have softened.This is delicious!
Red Pepper Pocket with Hummus
Directions
Cut the top off the pepper and clean out the
seeds inside. In a bowl, mix the balsamic and oil in with the
humus and fill the pepper 3/4 of the way to the top.
You can add pine nuts or parsley on top for taste and effect. This is super easy and delicious. Change the hummus to your favorite flavored kind or simply get regular hummus and mix in your
own flavored balsamic and oil.
Serve this with the soup, hot or cold and it's amazing. Low
in calories and BIG on protein.
Ingredients
• 1 Red Pepper• 1 container of roasted garlic hummus or any

The little girl from New England, who had her first one-person show at age 12, refined her talents study-ing fine art and illustration and graduating with honors from Paier College of Art in Connecticut. She is proud to have had a major artistic role in the restoration of all 4 stories and the ceiling of the historic Gusman Center for the Performing Arts (her art at the Gusman is presently displayed on their website), the Coral Gables old city hall dome and the dome clouds in the historic The Westin Colonnade Hotel also in Coral Gables. Stu Goldman has been an award winning syndicated editorial cartoonist since 1975, as well as a feature and comic strip cartoonist/illustrator for books, magazines and advertising. Regular readers of these pages already know that we.love.the.internet. Truly, deeply, madly. It was just made for the curious, the inquisitive, those of us who need to be constantly learning about
new things all the time. By now, we’ve got endless examples of how a photograph, a posting, a news clip caught our eye and led us to yet another incredible morning/afternoon/evening spent with just one of the thousands of fascinating people in this city.
In early June, we spotted one such photograph. Taken at BaCA (Bailey Contemporary Arts; you’ve been there, right? Right??), we were struck by the iconic nature of the image. The photo’s description, posted on Facebook by someone named “Brian Peterson [on the right]”, read as follows: “I met this gentleman at a poetry event…after I did my set…He shook my hand and said thank you! thank you! for choosing your words wisely and being you and then he told me he started writing at 50 yrs old...It’s never too late, I thought I was late.”
We sent Brian a message, introducing ourselves and asking that he get in touch. He responded almost immediately, and the rest is history. Well, the rest is below, anyway. But we’re pretty sure we will one day count ourselves amongst the “folks who knew Brian way back when.” Word of advice: You might want to get him to autograph this copy today.
We arrange to meet at Chez Café on a sunny Saturday morning. Both of us rush in, just a little bit late, and grab a table. Introductions are quickly made, and then Brian grabs a seat and starts right in.
“I’m self-everything,” he smiles, showing off perfect, pearly-white teeth, “promoter, marketer, brander.”
Indeed. This ’01 Blanche Ely High School grad (“I was on the five year plan”, he admits) had a rather peripatetic youth, mostly of his own doing, but Brian mostly grew up here. “Three” seems to be the
magic number, by the way – three high schools (Blanche Ely High School, DeSoto in West Florida, and Barnwell in South Carolina), three middle schools (Pompano Beach Middle School, DeSoto, and Forest Glen in Coral Springs), and three elementary schools (more about that later). The detours, so to speak, were a result of his family’s never-ending efforts to do something, anything, about the path that Brian seemed determined to follow, an attempt to get him out of the “fast life” of South Florida and into the more rural environs of DeSoto and Barnwell. For a moment, we idly wonder if Brian still has family in these two places, and if they might want to adopt a modern-day version of….never mind.
“I’m a product of the Parkway East projects in Pompano,” he tells us. [Ed. Note: Parkway East was an apartment complex which was razed in 2004 to make way for an expansion of Blanche Ely High School]. While Parkway East was not idyllic, Brian did have “skybox seats,” as he puts it, to the legendary Blanche Ely High School band practices, which took place right across the street from the balcony of the Peterson family apartment.
Alas, the skybox seats did not provide the needed inspiration to turn Brian’s attention to positive pursuits. “I was so bad that I had to get shipped out to my family in the countryside…nothing but orange groves,” he recalls, and continues, “I failed two grades – sixth and ninth. I went to three elementary schools too – [C. Robert] Markham Elementary, Sanders Park Elementary [both in Pompano Beach], and Nocatee Elementary in DeSoto.” Clearly, Brian’s persistence is in his DNA, as his family was as determined to set him on the right path as he was to take every possible side road.
Unprompted, Brian describes one of these detours in verse:
“My mama talkin’ dramaSend you to your gramma
You’ll stay the whole summaThat country-a—s—
And that loud-a—thunda”
“There were a lot of farm workers in those towns,” Brian recalls, which he was more familiar with than one might think for a “fast lane” kid, since his grandfather was a farmer. Random fact: Brian informs us that there are over 150(!) kinds of watermelons [Ed. note: we checked. There are, in fact, more than 150 – there are more than 1200, a fact provided by the National Watermelon Promotion Board. The things we learn!]. “I could touch a watermelon today, and tell you right now if it will be any good.” Wow!
We observe that, despite a rocky start, he appears to have put that well behind him. “I go back to my roots…that’s what keeps me humble, but I can still get out of hand. My heart is my family. I’m 32, no kids, a single, handsome young man…. From grade school to middle school to high school to the school of life,” he smiles. Indeed.
Brian glances at his watch; it’s 12:18. He mentions that 12/18 is, in fact, his birthday. Since he was born so close to Christmas, we ask if he ever felt cheated on his birthday. Rather than answer directly, he notes, “I was the first born.” The oldest of five, in fact, and a half sibling on his father’s side. Enough said.
“My father,” he reveals, “was smart. He was an English and a science major, but there were problems. I needed a second father, and I had my cousin for that.” We ask about his father, and he directs us to his Father’s Day Facebook post: “Grandma always said ‘he ain't s**t but he still your daddy.’ I see it now…more than ever before…Happy Father's Day!! S/O to the stepdaddies with the stepkids who be getting stepped on.”
Just about now, very early in the afternoon we whiled away together, we realize that everything Brian says has a certain…cadence to it. No, that’s not quite right. It’s rhythmic, maybe, or maybe it’s lyrical. No, we’ve got it! It’s poetry! All of it. Throughout the afternoon, it’s as if decades of hard knocks and fighting back and finding his way have somehow coalesced in his brain and come tumbling out in the most, well, poetic way possible.

BRIAN PETERSON HAS ARRIVEDThe young, homegrown talent is poised to make his mark, and show Pompano Beach - and the world - that perseverance pays off

The words spill out of his mouth in a lyrical fashion that is in some ways akin to gospel music. We resist the urge to participate in call and response. This resistance is not easy.
We ask about the process he follows to put his thoughts into words. As it turns out, there isn’t a “process,” so to speak. Even more remarkable is that Brian only writes every few months. “I have to consume everything for awhile – everything I see – your best ears are your eyes….I don’t write all the time.” It’s more as if his subconscious absorbs his surroundings and experiences and, when the time is right, returns them in a form that can best be described as magical. That’s a typical refrain of those with great creative talent, though, isn’t it? Most, if not all, of the great artists, or composers, or novelists, whatever the frequency with which they produce or whatever discipline they may follow, are largely unable to explain where the inspiration comes from. It’s just there; the creative spark is often mysterious and isn’t something one chooses, but in fact appears to choose you.
“God gave me the gift of gab,” he mentions. “A young lady [yes, he really said “young lady”] I dated in my late 20s told me I had the gift of gab. I didn’t know what that meant, and she told me to Google it. So I did.”
What chose Brian relatively late in life (as if, from our perspective, one’s mid- to late-20s could be considered “late”) was poetry. Yes, poetry. His work is difficult to describe in the abstract; one must listen to it to truly understand it. It’s not rap. It’s not music (but there’s music to accompany it). What it is, clearly, is art, and even more clearly, a gift.
Brian’s best friend, Brian (yes), is white. Does this matter? Well, sort of, in that Best Friend Brian is the one who got Subject of This Interview Brian into writing, specifically rap. “Brian taught me how to write rap,” Brian tells us. What prompted this, we wonder? “He came over one night; he was having woman problems, we went to the Deerfield Beach Pier – you know, the whole movie-like stuff.” Side note: If you’ve experienced a breakup while living in these parts and did not go to the pier to mope, mourn, and wallow in self-pity afterward, well, we don’t want to insult you, but – you’re lying. If you’re not lying, take our advice: There is nowhere on earth like the pier (any pier will do) in this situation. It IS like the movies: It’s dramatic. It’s gorgeous. And, beyond all, it reminds you that the ocean is all-powerful, and huge, and vast, and that you are a very small part of the grand scheme of things, and that life goes on. We highly recommend it. You’re welcome.
“He [Best Friend Brian] comes into my house with a CD remix [remember those?] and oh my gosh, he’s the white T.I.! And I thought, ‘I want to do this!’” But I wasn’t consistent; I never did anything consistent in my life,” Brian remembers about that fateful night. The CD mix and the pier scene led to Brian’s own writing; he gave his first public performance about three years ago, when he took the stage at an event in Tampa at his sister’s urging.
“When I heard him, I wanted to write. I started like you have to start anything, at the bottom. And back then, I didn’t know the difference between fool’s gold and real gold.” Does this talent run in the family, we ask? “Every last one of us,” Brian replies. “I’ve got two younger brothers with…issues…but [we all have this gift]. I only use what God gave me. I think that’s priceless.” Yes, yes it is.
The writing led to poetry, which Brian began in earnest only about two years ago. “When I met poetry, it took me to another place – inspiration comes in different forms. Richard ‘Byrd’ Wilson? He opened my mind. You’re telling me I can put my life to a beat? That’s easy!” Well, maybe for Brian. There’s that “gift” thing again.
What does Brian do for fun? Well, there are two all-American pastimes he rarely engages in – television viewing and the computer (Facebook aside). “I haven’t had a TV in five years. I do like to watch sports, and history, and maybe a little Animal Planet – something educational. Television is the worst thing we have, other than the computer. It takes up so much time, and it’s such brainwashing. If someone is ugly, and I say, ‘Hey beautiful, hey beautiful, hey beautiful’ 10,000 times, eventually you’re going to believe it.” What he does enjoy – in fact, might be just a wee bit obsessed with – is working out. Lots,
and lots, and lots of working out. He’s a member of the Backyard Kings, a localgroup of folks who work out together and appear to be frightfully fit. Brian clearly gives a lot of credence to the mind/body connection, and the necessity of keeping both healthy. In fact, as he’s been putting the finishing touches on his debut CD, “Lines & Lyrics: Open Mic,” he’s also been attending massage therapy school, and is preparing for the state boards. “The sense of touch,” he observes, “is energy. I want to bring this to the black community – that massage is so important for your health.”
Speaking of health, both of Brian’s parents are still alive and healthy. We ask what his mom thinks of all of this, this remarkable transformation of the boy who was “immune,” he recalls, to the near-daily “whuppins” he got growing up at Parkway East. “You know how a mother is,” he tells us. “You’re always just trying to make your mom proud. Just to make her smile…[When I was young], Mom showed me some tough love – that’s what I needed.”
He thinks back to what he describes as the “culture shock” of west Florida, and his days on the football team in Barnwell, SC. “I had this accent…They called me ‘Fort Lauderdale.’ I told them I was from Pompano, but they only knew ‘Fort Lauderdale.’ That was in ’98 – not a good time in South Carolina.” No, we’d imagine it wasn’t, not for this young black man from the “citified” Southeast Florida.
What, we ask Brian, does he want folks to know about his craft? He smiles. He is the first person we’ve ever asked this question of who turns it back on us. “What do you think people should know?” Oh, my. Where to start. Luckily, this wordsmith lets us off the hook. “The first impression is the only impression…I want confusion – am I rapping, talking, reciting a poem?” We ask why confusion – or is it actually mystery? “That’s the perfect word for it,” he replies. The words – no, the verses – tumble from him, and we are unable to keep up.

What is anterior hip replacement?
Anterior hip replacement is a form of hip replacement surgery where the surgeon uses
a natural opening between muscles in the front of the hip to perform the surgery.
Avoiding direct contact with the muscles with the anterior approach allows for a faster
and less painful recovery.
When should you ask your doctor about anterior hip replacement?
Talk to your doctor if you experience pain or loss of function in your groin and thigh
as well as difficulty with routine activities such as tying your shoes, putting your socks
on, getting in and out of a car and walking.
What tests or scans are performed?
Typically, your doctor will perform an X-ray to diagnose the cause of your pain or
discomfort. Occasionally an MRI may be required to determine if surgery is necessary.
Who is a good candidate for anterior hip replacement?
A candidate for surgery would be someone who has not responded to non-
surgical treatments, such as cortisone, prescribed rest periods or non-steroidal anti-
inflammatory medications. In addition, a good candidate is someone who has severe
arthritis, pain that causes difficulty with everyday activities like bending, stretching or
walking, or with lifestyle activities, such as dancing, golfing and exercising.
What technology/equipment is used during surgery at Broward Health North?
The use of the HANA table, along with live X-ray, allows for a more accurate position of
the implants and restoring of leg length. Broward Health North’s comprehensive Joint
Replacement Center offers private rooms for every patient, which helps to ensure a
smooth post-op recovery.
How soon will be patients be walking after surgery?
Patients are out of their beds the day of surgery and using a walker by the next
morning. Typically, patients use a walker for 10-14 days then progress to a cane and
walk independently within a few weeks.
How long is recovery?
The recovery time varies due to a variety of factors, including age and pre-op physical
fitness. It amazes us how quickly patients recover, but typically it is four weeks to
return to full activities.
About Dr. Bruce Janke and Dr. Steven Naide:
Bruce Janke, MD, is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon at East Coast Orthopedics
and is the medical director of the Joint Replacement Center at Broward Health North.
He has been on staff at Broward Health North since August 1997. Dr. Janke is fellowship
trained in sports medicine. He has extensive experience in sports related injuries,
arthroscopy, knee and shoulder reconstruction, total joint replacement and trauma
surgery. He received his medical degree from the University of Miami and completed
his internship and residency at Saint Luke’s Medical Center in Cleveland, Ohio.
Steven Naide, MD, board-certified orthopedic surgeon at East Coast Orthopedics
and is the medical director of orthopedic trauma at Broward Health North. He has
been on staff at Broward Health North since November 2000 and is a member of the
Medical Surgical Review Committee. Dr. Naide specializes in total joint replacement,
arthroscopic knee and shoulder surgery and trauma surgery.
Dr. Naide received his medical degree from Hahnemann University and also completed
his internship and residency at Hahnemann University in Philadelphia, Pa.

Art, as described in the dictionary, is primarily the expression and application of human creativity and imagination. Art is typically presented in a visual form such as a sculpture or a painting. With the development of technology, art is now an extension of the life of luxury that many are privileged to own…So, what is stopping art
to be portrayed on and in cars? What about motorcycles, RVs or airplanes?
Art on vehicles is like any form of art, it represents the individual and what they enjoy looking at. It is an expression of who they are and what they value as beauty.
To have a successful art painted on a vehicle, there should be a degree of craft, artistic skill, expertise and dedication (time and money) to the project involved. The art on vehicles started as a marketing tool for businesses to showcase their goods and services or as a moving banner; and thus the growing business of vehicle wrap.
Then came the choosy individual with an artistic eye and money to invest… that is what created the trend of Custom Cars phenomena whether through paint, accessories (inside the vehicle or additional attachments to the vehicle such as spoilers and fins), then the Sculpted Cars which adds shapes and colors on top of the vehicle as part of the car such as the mouse vehicles we see advertising for a well known pest control company in our area. There is also the Interactive Cars which encourages people to draw on the cars during special art festivals and events.
Being able to drive the vehicle is also important. If it doesn't run and drive, then it's just sculpture, not an art car. Often, the people who create or order art on their cars use it as a daily driver, taking it to work and on errands.
People started creating art cars in the late 1970s and early 1980s, often without knowing that other people were starting on the same strange artistic journey. The first Houston Art Car Parade was held in 1988, and it is now the largest gathering of art cars in the world. In the mid-1990s, art cars began participating in the Burning Man festival in the Nevada desert. In the past decade, art car festivals have sprung up around the country, with various degrees of success.
Adam Lindemann, founder of New York's beloved Venus Over Manhattan Gallery, has curated a stellar exhibition of motor vehicles that have been painted, smashed, revamped and transformed into clunky and captivating works of art. Entitled "PISTON HEAD: Artists Engage the Automobile," the exhibition features art cars from artists including Keith Haring, Richard Phillips, Bruce High Quality Foundation and Damien Hirst. Playboy has gotten into the art on cars and collaborated with Lindemann and artist Richard Phillips for the painting of “Playboy Charger”. This trend shows that it is not going to fade away any time soon…
So, if you are driving around and you see a perfectly good car turned into a mouse or a shark, a body of a beautiful woman or a vehicle completely covered with cameras… Just remember, it is art and “beauty is in the eyes of the beholder”.

By now, the afternoon clouds have rolled in, and the sunny sky has turned foreboding. We mention our oldest child, Charlotte, and are once again treated to those pearly whites. “Charlotte!” he exclaims, pointing to himself, and we see the name “Charlotte” tattooed on his neck. “That’s my mom’s name!”
There. It’s official. We were destined to see that Facebook photo, destined to reach out, just as Brian was destined to respond.
It’s finally time to go. Brian has promised a sneak peek (well, a sneak “listen”) to his CD, which, as of this writing, was a few weeks from release. We get into the car and he pops the CD in and the words (and music - at times faint, sometimes ominous, and always perfectly suited to the prose) surround us as insistently as the rain. There’s a curious intimacy to sitting in a car during a south Florida summer storm, letting the verses wash over you. We feel as if Brian is someone we’ve known forever, and can almost picture that outwardly tough young man with the soul of a poet; we feel as if we were there to watch his life come very close to having a very different trajectory, there to breathe a sigh of relief when the unseen forces that surround us all conspired to awaken his poet’s soul and, eventually, to bring us to this day.
Further proof that the world works in mysterious ways comes on our drive home, when we pass the Furman Insurance sign, and this week’s message reads: “When I let go of what I am, I become what I might be.”

WHAT IS ART, ANYWAY?

The art of trolling. The art of innovation. The art of possibility. The art of non-conformity. The art of just doing stuff. Options are endless; these are just a few found on an impromptu web search. When you hear the term "art", what comes to mind? The most common responses include
examples of the visual arts such as a painting or a sculpture. Or take it a step further and include a poem, a musical composition or a dance performance.
Art requires some talent, doesn't it? Although one could argue that point while staring at a six foot canvas painted completely black with a $15,000 price tag attached. At a time when our educational institutions are abandoning band practice, theater and art programming to focus more on passing FCATS, it makes one wonder where placing a low emphasis on creativity will lead us in the next decade.
Now, now....before you stop reading, I promise I'm not trying to get preachy or philosophical. I have had a passion for the arts as long as I can remember. That being said, I can admit with certainty that I am not the best artist you will ever meet. Clearly you would agree if you saw some of my work. And you definitely don't want to hear me play the clarinet. But some of the most influential teachers I've ever met were my art instructors. Not because they explained the difference between watercolor and pastels, or showed me how to draw a horse. It was because they forced me to approach problems and tasks with a creative perspective.
Sure, you can draw a clothespin on a clothesline. But what if that same clothespin now had to be 30 feet high? Could there be any other applications for it? It's that out of the box thought process that influences our entrepreneurs and engineers to invent tablets, rollerblades, and shrink wrapped buildings. Yes, one day a creative thinker envisioned shrink wrap could be used for more than covering a bowl of Jello in the fridge.
When I was working as a corporate trainer, it reinforced the idea that individuals have different learning styles. These can include visual (using images, pictures
or diagrams), logical (mathematics, statistical studies) and aural (inclusion of sound, music and rhyming). There are many others, but I only cite examples of a few. Clearly Mr. Morgan, my high school algebra teacher, would agree that I did not adhere to the logical learning style at that time in my development.
But what would mathematics and engineering be without the dreams of what those calculations can create? Will one of these students become the Picasso, Da Vinci, or Michelangelo of our time? Maybe. However, that's not truly the point. Our minds require stimulation and inspiration. Otherwise, life becomes a series of tasks....eating, sleeping, going to work. There has to be some diversion from the normal routine.
Have you done anything artistic or inspired lately? Or at the very least, taken a moment to appreciate someone else's creativity? Sit down on the floor with your child and color in a coloring book. Don't be afraid to use that purple crayon. Those trees are crying to be colored purple. Yellow polka dots may even be an option.
No children around? Well, borrow your sister’s kids for the afternoon. Visit the Museum of Science in downtown Fort Lauderdale. Or the new Young at Arts museum in Davie. And then after that, sit down and create a Lego tower inspired by something you saw earlier in the day. While children aren't required for these exercises, I can understand where they may help explain why you're using finger paints on the kitchen table when your spouse walks in.
Looking for something a little more sophisticated? Buy tickets to a theater performance, try your talent out at a spoken word event, or for a new recent trend, those paint and sip events look like they could be fun! Grab a friend and a bottle of wine. No art training needed. And when you finish your masterpiece, take a minute to take a photo on that little phone gadget that Steve Jobs and his team dreamed up, send it off to your high school art teacher and tell them thanks for the memories! We couldn't have done it without you.

NOW: WHEREFORE ART THOU?
A busy Flagler Avenue in downtown Pompano sometime in the late 1930s. For decades, local farmers would bring their produce to this area to be sold and loaded on trains for a journey to northern markets. The intense activity led to the expansion of the downtown area. However, local farmers realized that there was little room for further expansion and so in 1939 a new market was opened west of town -- today's Pompano State Farmers' Market.

your kidsIn the month of September, public school students observe National Constitution Day and Celebrate Freedom Week.
September 17th is National Constitution Day, and accordingly, public school students across the nation will learn about the Constitution and its impact on our government. On September 17, 1787, thirty-nine men signed the United States Constitution in Philadelphia, the nation's largest city at the time. Future U.S. presidents George Washington and James Madison signed the Constitution and when 81 year-old signer Benjamin Franklin was asked about what type of government was established he stated, “A republic... If you can keep it.” This year, Celebrate Freedom Week will be September 22-26, 2014. During this time, students will focus on the Declaration of Independence to gain a deeper understanding of the sacrifices made during the founding of the United States of America and the values on which this country was founded. The signers of the Declaration of Independence risked their lives and their fortunes for their belief in the following words: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. That to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.”
The Broward County Public Schools Social Studies department provides K-12 teachers with a variety of optional resources to support teachers in teaching the Constitution and participating in Celebrate Freedom Week. NEWS FROM THE WEST COAST
When did you know without any doubt that you wanted to act? As far back as high school. There was an electricity from the audience I hadn't felt anywhere else. I was a pitcher in high school, and no question the feeling of striking a guy out was incredible, but it couldn't compare to the feeling of being on stage.What inspires you to act? It's probably the only place where I feel completely alive. It's such a pc society today where you can't lose your temper or be unprofessional in any manner. I believe that deep down inside we're still humans with rage, hate, heightened states of joy, and we need to play out these emotions in a safe environment so that we can continue to be in touch with who we truly are. When did you realize you had reached your goals as an actor? There have been many feats throughout the years. My most memorable was my first guest starring role on national T.V. on NYPD Blue. My ultimate goal is to be a series regular on a crime drama, but I've been very fortunate this year to watch my dream of acting on the big screen happen more and more frequently. This is something that has always been my goal.What was your favorite role to date and why? I love action scenes and even though there wasn't much dialogue for me on this particular day, I felt like a kid again on the final season of the hit show Prison Break. It was a day of speeding in a Range Rover down an airport runway

Dominic Pace (imdb.com/name/nm0655124/) began his career at the ripe age of 18, studying with members of the Actor’s Studio, Mimi Turque, and Susan Batson. He was Off Broadway at 19 years of age, in the hit show “Tony and Tina’s Wedding”. At 20 he was flown to Singapore for a supporting role in the Miramax film, “That’s the Way I Like It”. We need a paycheck, and that's why we do it, but with performing you're working with different people, on different stages, in different filming locations. It's a unique and gratifying experience every time, along with challenging you.Can we expect a book from you? Yes! Not a biography, but I have this geeky hobby of visiting famous movie locations, where I've taken my family all over the country, visiting some of the most iconic movie locations in American cinema. (The Godfather House, the Goonies House, Field of Dreams). I've been all over, and I'm in the process of constructing a “Road Trip Coffee Book” of famous filming locations.What is the best way for your fans to know what you’re working on? Facebook/Twitter? Do you post for your own sites or do you have your assistants do the posts? I love Facebook the most, although I left the site for a couple of years as I felt that I was getting distracted often from what I needed to achieve. I'm back on with pages on Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, and Facebook.Tell us something new, something bold that you’ve never told any other magazine…news tip :) There is a beautiful irony to an actor's survival job - one that can help an aspiring artist almost as much as their coach. Your soul can be crushed from your day to day job. Especially in customer service, you have to take a lot from disgruntled customers. My advice and experience has been to use that frustration, that pain, the mundane day to day life... use it to commit

There’s an art to just about everything, right? The art of war, the art of marriage, the art of shaving and the internet search list goes on. Of course there is an art to being connected to social media. It’s more complex than opening up a Facebook or a Twitter account. You actually have to do the work. It’s an art, there’s a science and if you’re not careful you could be wasting time, money and brain cells.
If you build it... they may NOT come!Just because you paid an amazing graphic designer to create powerful images and compelling branding for your social media accounts does not guarantee that people will automatically flock to your page to connect with you. When you purchase a great new gadget or device, you do have to understand how to use it before the fun can begin. The same logic applies to your social media platforms.
• Put in the work: create compelling, thought provoking and engaging posts to share.
• Plan out your strategy and make sure it reflects the message you are trying to convey to your audience.
• Time is money and your time needs to be tracked. Is this social media stuff the best use of your time?
The BIG C!The BIG C will definitely make or break you when it comes to perfecting the art of being connected on social media. Do you have enough of the “C”? Where are you getting the “C”? Is the “C” event compelling, interesting or worth sharing? Oh yes, you’re probably wondering what the “C” is, right? It’s content. Not only is cash king, but content is king too. The more that you have, the more that you create and the more that share makes the art of being connected much easier.
• Share content from other sources that are relevant to your topic or industry (HuffPost, CNN, Today, Business Insider, Forbes, Travel, and the list goes on).
• Watch the news, read the paper and check the internet to see what topics are trending in the world and piggyback off of that conversation. For
example, if you sell baby products, check out the celebrity moms that are having babies and write a blog or start a chat about how your products will help expecting moms like “Eva Mendez.”
• Content does not mean selling. Stick to the 80/20 rule. Educate your audience 80% of the time and only suggestive sell 20% of the time.
I followed your tips and my numbers aren’t growing!The question I have for you is did you consistently follow the tips? When you’re on a diet and you consistently follow the plan, you will lose weight without even having to go to the gym. But if you only follow the plan during the week and not the weekends, it won’t work. Stop paying attention to the numbers – they do not define your brand. But if they have reached a plateau and have not moved in over a month – then yes, Houston, you have a problem.
• Try creating sponsored (paid) ads through the social media platform. Make the ads catchy, and not too wordy, with a dynamic picture that explains what your message is.
• Invite people to connect with you on the social media platform(s). • Start connecting with others and they will start connecting with you (the
“two-way street” rule).• Add your social media contact information to your email signature, business
card and website.• Be VERY consistent with how much you update your platforms – create a
schedule that you can stick to.
There is an art to almost everything in life, but that does not mean that you cannot master the art of being connected. I guarantee that if you build it correctly, implement the BIG C and implement consistency you will come out a warrior. As you head down this path, the most important aspect that needs to be considered is your time. If you are getting paid $75 per hour when you are working in your business and the art of social media is taking 5-6 hours per day, then let’s agree that this is NOT the best use of your time. Know when to quit the art of being connected and hire a professional that has mastered the art!

Meet Graphic Artists W. James Blanford, Jr. and

Graph ic Des ign is the art of selecting and arranging visual elements—illustration, typography, symbols, and colors—to convey a message. This “visual communication” is a collaborative discipline: writers produce words and photographers and illustrators create images that the designer incorporates into a complete visual message. Graphic Artists Brian Hall and James Blanford will display their illustrative messages at ArtHall on Wednesday, September 17, 50 NE 1st Street from 5:30 pm to 8:00 pm.
W. James Blanford, Jr. (see p. 32) earned his Associate of Science degree in Fashion Illustration at the Art Institute in Ft. Lauderdale. He has been a staff artist for a screen print company, and art teacher for grades 6-8, a volunteer art instructor for after school programs and a superhero illustration instructor! James uses primarily pen and ink. He accents or brings about specific themes through added mixed media including collage. He is presently creating his new comic, “Gloss”. He is also adept at portraits and many other types of illustration. He has exhibited at the Art Institute, Ft. Lauderdale; Atlantic Christian College-Wilson, N.C.; nationally for Scholastic Arts exhibit in N.Y. and most recently at Masterpiece Barber Salon and Art Gallery here in Pompano Beach. James’ work will be displayed at Florida Minicon’s Fall edition later this year. Brian Hall (see back cover), originally from the Pacific Northwest, focused on art at an early age. In junior
high school, Brian began to focus more on detail, light and shading. He experimented with different mediums and uses acrylics, airbrush and computer software to enhance and add dimension to all his graphic art. “I am a self-taught artist using a range of media which includes painting, drawing, airbrush, digital paint, photo shop and anything I can get my hands on! I have a “modern abstract” style and collection; alongside bold and bright, there is dark and sinister. I want an emotional reaction from the viewer.”
This event is free, and family and pet friendly! Community participation is welcome to view the artwork, meet the artists and enjoy the music and refreshments. The public is encouraged to visit the Business Resource Center, Mon-Fri, 9-5 to enjoy the artwork for the month long duration of each exhibit.
