Every day, people with limps, walkers, canes and wheelchairs come to an important realization - the pain is just too much. Choosing to have any elective surgery is no easy decision; even when you know the end result is saying goodbye to your pain and hello to your life. While total hip replacements have been one of the most successful surgeries since they began, deciding to have the procedure has always come with its costs, until now.

Orthopedic surgeons at the Joint Replacement Center at Broward Health North offer an innovative new approach to hip replacement surgery - anterior hip replacement using the specially designed hana® table. Patients who choose the anterior approach to hip replacement as opposed to the traditional posterior approach don’t just say goodbye to the pain, they say goodbye to the restrictions as well.

Patients receiving anterior hip replacement experience none of the precautions related to traditional hip replacement, including no post-op dislocation precautions, no restriction of post-op activity, immediate use of normal toilet height, no post-op abduction pillow (between the knees) required, cross legs as desired, no shoe lift requirements and no post-op sexual activity limitations.

“Approximately 375,000 Americans undergo hip replacement surgery each year,” says Dr. Bruce Janke, Medical Director of the Joint Replacement Center at Broward Health North. “With this number expected to almost double over the next 25 years due in part to the aging population, it is important that people know they have a choice in the type of procedure they undergo.”

With the anterior approach, a small four inch incision is made just below and to the outside of the groin. Two muscles are then pushed aside, giving the surgeons access to the hip socket to perform the replacement. No muscles

at any time during the procedure are split or detached. For the patient, that results in a faster recovery, less pain, smaller

incision, less blood loss and less scarring.

“The outcomes are incredible,” says Dr. Steven Naide, Medical Director of Orthopedic Trauma at Broward Health North. “Within weeks our patients are getting back to golf, tennis, yoga, whatever it is they enjoy doing

that became impossible due to pain.”

The Joint Replacement Center is the recipient of the Florida Hospital Association 2011 Celebration of Achievement in Quality and Service award for Innovation of the Year in Patient Care. The Center is also first in Broward County to be Joint Commission Certified for Hip and Knee Replacement.

Our experienced surgeons at Broward Health North have

performed more than 2500 anterior hip

surgeries using the hana® table. Why

live in pain when you can choose to

put the fun back in your life?

CELEBRATIONS

M a y

"More matter for a May morning”

- William Shakespeare, Twelfth Night

May begins with May Day, of course. Some of us may remember Maypoles; others think of the international labour movement (which we here in the United States more commonly celebrate on Labor Day).

The May flower is the beautiful and fragrant lily of the valley, pictured above, and the birthstone, the glorious emerald.

V-E Day On this day, we celebrate Victory in Europe, the day when the Allied nations declared victory over the Nazis during World War II.

Cinco de Mayo! Contrary to popular belief, this is NOT a holiday in honor of drinking. Celebrated far more widely - and likely enthusiastically - here in the United States than in Mexico. The origins of this holiday date back to the 19th century, when the Mexican army defeated France during the Franco-Mexican war.

Bike to Work Day Generally held on the third Friday in May, this year's falls on the 16th. Oddly enough, Denver's will be held on June 25. No jokes about why this might be, please!

protecting your family.

Wear Purple for Peace Day We did not find much verifiable information about the origins of this day, but we figure every day is a good day for both purple and peace.

Lucky Penny Day Really. Sadly, we could find no local events celebrating this important day. But look down - perhaps you'll find a lucky penny!23

18International Museum Day According to the International Council of Museums, " This day is an occasion to raise awareness on how important museums are in the development of society." We'd agree, but note: oddly, National Museum Day in the United States occurs in September. That's ok - we'll take two days a year to celebrate such marvelous institutions!

26Memorial Day This is, of course, a day that traditionally marks the first day of summer, and least in cooler climes. Its true meaning, however, is to remember those who have made "the ultimate sacrifice" serving in the armed forces. Note: we HIGHLY recommend attending Pompano's celebration. It's an extremely moving event.

EVENTS || YOUR LIFESTYLE

The gran-daddy of South Florida Fishing Tournaments is the 49th Annual Pompano Beach Fishing Rodeo, set for May 14 – 17th. “The Rodeo” as it is known to local anglers is four days of fun for fisherman and the public. Headquartered at Alsdorf Park (14th Street Boat Ramp), the tournament is open to anglers of all ages and skill levels.

The tournament kicks off with a Wednesday night party and Captain’s meeting. Fishing starts on Friday with a Bimini Start Fishing out of Hillsboro Inlet as anglers search for Dolphin, Kingfish, Wahoo, Tuna, and Cobia. The tournament ends on Saturday with another days’ fishing and the best angler’s party and awards ceremony that goes well in to the evening.

The unique Drift Division opens up the tournament for anglers without their own boats. This, tournament within a tournament, on both the Helen S and the Fish City Pride is one of “The Rodeo’s” most fun events.

All Rodeo parties, weigh-ins and festivities are open to the public. For more information, visit pompanofishingrodeo.com, or call 954-942-4513.

The 2014 IFBT-USA Beach Tennis World Cup will take place in the beautiful city of Pompano Beach, FL on May 23-25, throughout Memorial weekend, with the support of sponsors such as Frank Congemi, Red Bull and Vita Coco.

Last year over 200 of the top beach tennis athletes from around the world, gathered to compete for prize money and the title of being the best, in the soon to be Olympic sport.

The 6th annual Beach Tennis World Cup has grown into one of the premier beach events in South Florida. The atmosphere is that of a beach festival with music, good energy, spectators, and players competing in a fast-paced, dynamic sport, while representing their country.

Players from over 20 countries are expected to participate in the tournament. The event, which has traditionally taken place in Deerfield Beach, will be held for the first time in the welcoming community of Pompano Beach. There will be permanent beach tennis courts set up for the public to participate, with free demonstrations and clinics, during the weeks leading up to event.

It will be a great Memorial Weekend of beach tennis, music, food and fun. Everyone is welcome to watch or participate in the tournament. There are many different levels offered, from Beginner to the Professional category. For more information, visit MyBeachTennis.net.

While details of the city's official activities were not available at press time, we urge you to attend this event. In 2012, we covered the ceremony at the Pompano Ceremony and had this to say: "This year’s event came with a call for the city to come together and celebrate as one city, and it certainly felt that way. Children, adults, seniors, bikers, police officers - all walks of life came together on this hot May morning, and never was it more obvious than at the end, when all of us stood, held hands with complete strangers, and sang “God Bless America.” At that moment, it could have been 1925, or 1943, or almost any year in between. And really, that’s one of the things that makes this city so appealing, isn’t it? It’s a place that often still feels like small-town America, in all of the best possible ways." We're sure this year's remembrance will be equally moving.

May. . . the roads are clearer, the temps are climbing - let's go fishing! If fishing's not your fancy, how about some beach tennis? Really!

This event, now in its sixth year, has moved to Pompano beach for the 2014 World Cup. Competitors from over 20 countries are expected. Let's be sure to give them Florida's Warmest Welcome!

Whatever your pleasure, be sure to enjoy every day.

Happy May!

our quest for this month's feature innocently enough, by asking the Internet community a simple question: "What animal gives birth to the most babies at once?"

Thus began a fascinating - and sometimes terrifying - look into the reproductive habits of some common and uncommon creatures.

The first place we landed was on slate.com, where we learned of the arrival in the world of those "adorable" baby hyenas: "...offspring ... are comparatively large and [are born] fully ready to kill, with their sharp teeth completely emerged through the gums." Oh, my!

Perhaps the darling seahorse has a kinder, gentler story. Um, no. We DID know that it is the male seahorse who carries the eggs and gives birth, a rarity among animals. But did you know (thank you, pawnation.com) that neither Mom nor Dad seahorse actually raises their young? Once they are born, baby seahorses are on their own. Some days, this sounds like a great idea!

On to the Tasmanian Devil! Incredibly, this creature of lore gives birth to about 50 (50!) babies at once. Alas, the Tasmanian Devil is a case study in survival of the fittest. Of the 50, only the four who can find their mother's milk supply will survive. Talk about long odds! (for more information, visit tv.com/shows/the-most-extreme/births).

We then landed on what is our new favorite black hole - um, website - listverse (listverse.com). We could have spent DAYS on this website, but deadlines called. Listverse has compiled a list of the "ten species that start their lives as ruthless fratricides." Really.

While some members of the "top ten" list were not surprising - think insects, EWWWW - others were a shock.

Take, for example, the snowy egret. Yes, that beautiful feathered fowl. It turns out that they are "highly prone to fratricide." These birds generally lay three eggs at a time. While the first two are provided with the appropriate level of hormones for survival. The third, however, um, does not. It appears that the third young egret is produced as somewhat of a "spare," who often serves as a meal for brothers and sisters. Again according to Listverse, "When food is scarce, the two older egret chicks often harass their younger sibling, which, being more passive, usually can’t defend itself and is eventually killed, either stabbed by the sharp bills of its siblings, or thrown out of the nest. This means more food for the murderous chicks."

Number one on the Fratricide Hit Parade, so to speak, is the Sand Tiger Shark, known (and, we'd say, misnamed) in Australia as the "Grey Nurse Shark." The females of the species have two wombs, and "The eggs hatch while still inside [each] womb, and the Sand Tiger embryos soon develop sharp teeth and start killing and eating their brothers and sisters and any unfertilized eggs in the womb, until there is only one embryo left alive in each womb."

What we were most proud of in the writing of this, however, was our ability to ignore the other festive headlines that popped up. We managed to resist slate.com's tempting link to " A Brief, Terrifying History of Viruses Escaping From Labs”. But hey, feel free! Let us know how well you sleep tonight.

MIND GAMES AND MORE!

PLUS...WAS YOUR MOTHER RIGHT?

© Zsolnai Gergely - Fotolia.com This month, we bring you more news about the mind/body connection, spiritual healing, and relaxing under pressure. And - in honor of moms everywhere - is "better safe than sorry" always true? Read on for more!

Did You Know? • Question: What weighs three pounds, is 75 percent

water and 60 percent fat, can’t feel pain, plus has 10,000 miles of blood vessels? Think. Think. Think. Answer: Your brain. To help keep it tuned-up—after all, it does generate enough energy to power a light bulb—playing mind games is highly recommended. Fun and free brain activities can be found on the Internet by searching “free brain games.” Or check out this link http://www.aarp.org/brainhealth. Now where did I put my car keys?

• These “mind games” might be even more important than you think! The mind-body link is strong. It has been estimated that up to 70 percent of doctor visits (other than a regular check-up) are due to psychological reasons. Studies have shown that, in some cases, meditation, rather than antidepressants, should be prescribed for anxiety. Find it hard to concentrate? There’s an app for that! Zen-sational news!

• Are you finding you have to “go” more often than you like? How annoying—especially when you have to get up in the middle of the night. Here’s where exercise might help. According to a recent study in Neurourology and Urodynamics, hit the dance floor. That’s right, dancing—doing any type of fancy footwork—is an excellent way to help avoid incontinence. All that movement, it seems, works to strengthen the muscles in the pelvic-floor, which leads to better bladder control. Salsa anyone?

If you’re under the misguided impression that “reflexology” is just about getting your feet rubbed, you’ll get a real kick out of this item. First off, it is true that foot massage and

reflexology both feel amazing, but that’s where the similarity ends. According to Lucy Brooks, owner of Lucy’s Dream Spa, an Asian-inspired oasis, which specializes in a variety of body relaxing modalities, “Reflexology is very, very good for the body. And for many of our clients who get it every week or so, they don’t need lots of medicine.” Unlike massage, which uses touch to relax the muscles, reflexology focuses on specific pressure points. It’s believed that each point—whether on the feet, hands, or ears—corresponds to a specific body organ and system. When the reflexologist puts pressure on a particular point on the bottom or top of the foot, for example, it is said to open the channels to a target organ, helping it to reenergize and heal. For instance, pressing the joint of either big toe could help relieve back issues, while putting pressure on the four remaining digits can alleviate sinus troubles. When used as a complement to other treatments, reflexology has been successful in helping Brooks’ clients to deal better with anxiety, asthma, headaches, sinusitis, and PMS. Interestingly, when the effects of reflexology were studied in Denmark, employers found a marked reduction in sick leave and absenteeism among their employees. Hmmmm, could it be that reflexology was a major contributor to the fact that Denmark holds the 2013 title of “Happiest Country in the World”? Lucy’s Dream Spa, 231 E. Commercial Blvd., Oakland Park, 954.229.1740, facebook.com/pages/Lucys-Dream-Spa/.

INVESTMENT DRESSING

ow often have you thought you had found a great deal on a blouse or a dress and bought it on a whim, only to get home and discover that it practically disintegrated with the first washing? All too often, we are taken in by these so-called deals that are really just low prices for low quality clothing. It is a waste of money and time as well. Spending $200 a month on these poorly constructed clothes means you are wasting $2,400 a year!

Investment dressing requires you to pay more money per item of clothing, but you are going to be getting high quality items that will look and feel great and last a long time. The trick is to spot spot these smart buys that will help you build up an investment wardrobe that you can use for years to come.

Look for Timeless PiecesThere is something to be said for the little black dress that is appropriate for all occasions. If you look for clothing that has lines that aren’t trendy but always look good, no matter the latest style, you have a winner. This includes pencil skirts, sheath dresses and simple blouses. These are items of clothing that could hold their own in any decade, not for being at the height of fashion, but for their simplicity and quiet class.

Go for Quality FabricsPaying more for clothing that is made of better fabric is a smart decision. In fact, the type of fabric used in your clothes can make all the difference in how good you look. A cheap polyester dress will look far worse than the exact same design in a classy linen blend. Choose the better fabric and you won’t regret it. Real silk, linen and wool are all fabrics that look terrific and will help build your investment wardrobe. Blends are fine too. Wool blends will be less itchy, linen blends will wrinkle less and silk blends will usually breathe more.

Remember That More is Not BetterHaving a few expensive classic pieces of clothing in your wardrobe is worth far more than having two or three closets full of cheap clothing that will never pass as good quality. Make sure you remember this when sticker shock hits!

Make It All Work TogetherThe best way to build your investment wardrobe is to plan your entire wardrobe for versatility. Having two or three pairs of pants, three to five blouses, a couple of skirts and a nice jacket and suit can actually work for you if you plan it. Choose just two or three classic colors that all complement each other and you’ll be able to mix and match your entire wardrobe, creating dozens of different outfits. Throw in a scarf or two and a couple of different belts and accessories and you can have even more looks, all with just a few select items. Opt for mostly solid colors rather than prints and you’ll have more combinations available to you.

Investment dressing is becoming a trend these days and it’s one that is well worth jumping on. Take a few minutes to plan out your basic wardrobe and choose a couple of colors to base it on. Then it’s time to go shopping. Stick to the plan, choose high quality items and at the end of your day, you’ll have a wardrobe that will last you a long time and suit any occasion.

Paying more for better quality

HThe ABCs of "Fashion Investing"- Ask yourself: Will this stand the test of time? Be honest!

- Better fabrics make better investments. Period.

- Classic colors will last forever. Save the neon for accessories and manicures.

Burgundy, although known for its producers that sometimes fetch five-figure prices at auction, has a plethora of producers who offer wines in the $20-$40 per bottle range. The whites are known for their minerality and the reds for their savory characteristics. When out shopping, examine the bottle and search for the appellation, which is usually the largest and most prominent lettering on the label. Some examples are “Gevrey-Chambertin,” “Puligny Montrachet,” or “Chablis.” Below the appellation designations are many words that you might not understand and will likely have trouble pronouncing. That’s ok! Look for words that say “Regional Cru,” “Village Cru,” or “Premier Cru.” These designations are based on the wine law system of Burgundy, called the AOC (The Appellation d’Origine Controllee). This system allows the consumer to know, by reading the label, characteristics of the wine such as the area of production, variety of grape, or vineyard practice.

Regional Cru wines are made from blends of grapes grown in vineyards within the Burgundy region.

A regional wine can be named after the region that it comes from, such as Bourgogne Côte Chalonnaise or Bourgogne Hautes–Côtes de Nuits. Often these wines are simply labeled Bourgogne Blanc or Bourgogne Rouge.

There are 22 Regional appellations that produce 52% of Burgundy’s total annual production.

According to a University of Iowa presentation on AOC rules, “Village [Cru] wines are produced by grapes grown around the name of the village identified on the label. Village wines are blended from grapes grown in multiple vineyards. While these vineyards do not have the terroir of either the Grand or Premier Cru appellations, and are not as likely to produce grapes that make exceptional wine, the wines are recognized as of consistently superior quality, and are affordable.”There are 44 village (or communal) appellations in Burgundy. These village wines account for 34 % of Burgundy’s annual production.

The presentation notes that "In the Unofficial Classification of 1861, nearly 600 single vineyards in Burgundy were designated with the appellation ‘Premier

Cru.’ The Premier Cru appellation identifies single vineyards that have terroirs with the potential for exceptional wines. These vineyards were established and documented by the monks who, for centuries, made wine from the grapes grown in them. They were officially designed as such in 1935 when the present day AOC system was created. Widely misunderstood as a measure of quality, the AOC laws are really a guarantee of authenticity. In other words, they ensure that the wine in the bottle actually comes from the place stated on the label, and adheres to a set of winemaking regulations. Often, the best Premier Crus can equal the quality of Grand Crus at a much lesser cost. Premier Crus account for about 11% of Burgundy’s annual production; the Premier Cru labels provide the commune and then the vineyard name. ‘Appellation Premier Cru Controlee’ will also be displayed on the bottle. Often, the producer will say 1er Cru instead of Premier Cru.”

For general knowledge, and to understand the relative value-pricing Burgundy wines can have versus the rarest and most expensive Burgundies – Grand Crus. The University of Iowa presentation explains the Grand Cru as follows:

“The highest appellation in Burgundy is Grand Cru. These vineyards were established and documented by monks centuries ago, and formally recognized in 1861. The combinations of soil, exposure, rain, wind and sun provide exceptional terroir. Only 33 vineyards in Burgundy have this designation. 32 of these vineyards are located in the Cote d’Or, the remaining Grand Cru vineyard is found in Chablis. Of these prestigious vineyards, 24 grow Pinot Noir grapes, and 9 grow Chardonnay grapes. Grand Cru wines produced by these grapes account for less than 2% of the wine production from Burgundy each year, making these wines rare, highly sought after, and expensive. Only the name of the vineyard appears on a bottle of Grand Cru wine.”

Source: uiowa.edu/~c07w135a/wine/village.html.

Here are some suggestions for burgundies which are always "on sale":

2010 Paul Pernot & Fils Bourgogne Chardonnay ($20)2012 Domaine Thierry Matrot Bourgogne Blanc ($15)

2012 Frédéric Esmonin Gevrey-Chambertin ($21)NV Domaine Capuano-Ferreri & Fils, 1er Cru ($22)

Drinking wine can be an expensive luxury, but it doesn’t always have to be. There are many affordable wines out there for the wine lover who is willing to dig deep and find

some value bargains that don’t compromise quality. Certain regions and grape varietals offer value by the nature of their production processes. Because of their production volume or the relatively low cost of bringing the wine to market, these gems are always “on sale.” For this month, however, we will focus on Burgundy, France.

saving for retirement. Also, among pre-retirees saving for retirement and not becoming a burden to loved ones was among their most important financial goals. To get the most out of your retirement savings, you should figure out where you want to be and how you're going to get there. Since people are living longer than ever, retirement savings need to last longer and work harder. It's more important than ever to make smart financial decisions.

A recent survey of working age Floridian’s revealed:

• 1 in 3 of working age and retired Florida residents lack the basic knowledge of investing and saving for retirement.

• 36% of workers have less than $1,000 in savings and investments that could be used for retirement.

• 24% of people are not at all confident they have enough saved for a comfortable retirement.

Other survey respondents listed not being a burden on their family and having enough money to cover rising medical costs as key retirement goals. Also, the majority of current retirees surveyed revealed that their biggest regrets were not saving for retirement earlier in life and not saving enough.

ENJOYING OUR CITY IN THE OFF-SEASONOK. It's a bit, well, warm. Make that HOT. Nevertheless, we still live in paradise, and paradise is not only less crowdedin the "off" months, it's cheaper, too!

olf. According to the city's website, "April usually signifies the end of our golfing season in south Florida....On April 15th, our discounted summer rates begin. In addition, Pompano Beach residents enjoy discounted memberships all year long." #Winning.

In addition, join the General Manager and Superintendent for coffee, every other Thursday from 7:30 to 8:30, at Galuppi's. Dates in May are the 1st, 15th, and 29th.

According to the city's Tennis Center website, "The Municipal Tennis Center offers 16 professional Fast Dry Clay courts for day and night play. Eight of the courts are lighted. We have a fully equipped ProShop which includes ball machine rental, snack bar and restrooms.

The Municipal Tennis Center was Named "One of the top Municipal Tennis Facilities in the Country" by the United States Tennis Association."

In addition, there are courts all over the city at many of our more than 50 parks. All of these courts are WAY less crowded in the off-months. Get there early to beat the heat, or plan a game after work. Enjoy!

No, it's not in Pompano. No, the Mai-Kai did not sponsor this plug. Yes, they offer an awesome summer discount. Join the Mai-Kai "Molokai Club" and, from May 1 to December 1, get a variety of club member benefits including a 25% discount on your entire check Sundays through Thursdays, drink coupons, and more. Starting in June and lasting through the summer, there's a Kids' Show every Sunday evening. As part of this show, children under 12 years old enjoy the show at no charge and there is a children's menu available. Each child receives a lei and a Polynesian activity book. We've done this on many a summer Sunday, and it's one of our children's favorite childhood memories. Don't have kids? Go anyway! It's a charming evening.

Virtually every local hotel, from the plethora of old Florida mom and pops to the growing number of national and international chains, offers significantly lower rates in the summer. Two of them, in fact, advertise in these pages. We are huge fans of the staycation - no battling the airport crowds, you can (if you insist) run home for anything you forgot (though we don't recommend it), and really - why fly to a beach paradise when it's right outside your door?

Last summer, Cafe Maxx offered "Neighborhood Nights." At press time, no information was available for this summer. One can only hope!

Mark your calendar for June 21! Dive in Movie Night is happening at the Pompano Beach Aquatics Center. Cool off from the hot summer heat while watching the flick “Teen Beach Movie” and enjoying the yummy treats. The featured film begins at 8pm so don’t be late, and wear your swimsuit! For more information, please call 954-786-4111.

The beach itself is always free, always breezy, always amazing. In the summer, parking is plentiful, and discounted parking permits are available for residents. Parking permit decals may be purchased at the Cashiers' Office at City Hall at the annual rate of $60 and a 6-month rate of $30. Residents are required complete an application and present a picture I.D., vehicle registration, and one proof of residency such as a voter's I.D. card, utility bill less than 60 days old, current tax bill, notarized or registered deed, mortgage, or lease. The Cashiers' Office at City Hall is open Monday through Friday between the hours of 8am to 5pm.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT STROKERidwan Lin, MD, PhDInterventional Neurologist

What is a stroke?Stroke, sometimes known as a brain attack, is a term used to describe brain tissue damage caused by interruption of blood flow to the brain. Most of the time, it is caused by blockages within the arteries in the head or the neck due to progressive plaque buildup or by blood clots. This is called ischemic stroke. Sometimes, interruption of blood flow can occur when blood leaks out of arteries into surrounding brain tissue and causes damage. This is called hemorrhagic stroke. What are some basic signs/symptoms of stroke?Stroke symptoms usually happen quickly. They typically affect discrete functions, such as loss of vision, loss of ability to speak, or loss of strength or sensation in one limb or one half of the body. In addition, hemorrhagic stroke can produce a sudden, severe headache, change in alertness or loss of consciousness.

If you suspect someone has had a stroke, act FAST. Ask the person to smile – does their Face droop? Ask the person to raise their Arms – does one arm drift downward? Ask the person to repeat a simple phrase – is their Speech slurred? If any of these happen, it’s Time to call 911 immediately!

Where should I go if I feel I am having a stroke?Call 911 to get to the nearest certified stroke center as soon as possible. Do not drive yourself.

Okay, so Broward Health North (BHN) is a Comprehensive Stroke Center. What does that mean?BHN is a comprehensive stroke center because it offers the highest level of stroke care and treatment; including intravenous tpA, clot removal for acute stroke, catheter treatment for aneurysm and neurosurgery for a brain hemorrhage. Medications can reverse the effects of a stroke, but they must be administered within three hours of the attack. Can I do anything to prevent a stroke? If so, what?Stroke prevention involves aggressive control of the risk factors. These include high blood pressure, diabetes, cholesterol, smoking and heart disease. Your personal risk factors depend on your family history, lifestyle and choices. Consult your family physician or neurologist to learn how you can take preventative measures against stroke.

What is the most important thing to remember about stroke?Stroke is an emergency. Brain cell loss occurs at rate of nearly 2 million per minute. The patient’s best chance of recovery occurs when he or she can get to a stroke-certified hospital quickly.

About Dr. Ridwan Lin:Ridwan Lin, MD, PhD, is a board certified interventional neurologist at BHN specializing in medical as well as interventional (catheter-based) treatments of a wide range of cerebrovascular disorders, including acute stroke therapies, carotid/intracranial stenosis, brain aneurysms and vascular malformations. Dr. Lin utilizes a less invasive approach in treating disorders affecting the arteries and veins which supply oxygen to the brain. Endovascular interventional therapy – a less invasive alternative approach to open surgery – uses an X-ray guided catheter to treat stroke and brain aneurysms as well as vascular malformations.

Dr. Lin’s office is located in the cerebrovascular center at BHN, a unique outpatient center providing a comprehensive approach for diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of neurovascular patients. To schedule a non-emergency appointment, please call 954.786.5151.

Broward Health North is certified as a comprehensive stroke center by the Agency for Healthcare Administration. The hospital is equipped with the necessary expertise and programs to diagnose and treat stroke patients who require a higher level of medical, surgical or neuro-interventional care. BHN is also certified by the Joint Commission.

Is that car really “on sale,” and what does that mean to you, the average consumer?

First, is this a car that you can actually buy? Of course, for many of us, this excludes most Ferraris, Porsches, Lamborghinis or Aston Martins. Yet, it is those cars that populate your dreams. The “car that’s on sale that I can actually buy” is not a celebrity model, only attainable by the rich and famous, but the kind of car the average person would buy and use on a daily basis.

Many car manufacturers have realized that the average price-conscious consumer wants comfort, fuel economy, technology and style. Many car makers are now offering high-end features on lower cost vehicles, undercutting the luxury competition.

Kia, Hyundai, Toyota, Chevy, and Nissan have done an excellent job changing the style of their newer cars to be more attractive and modern while keeping up with technology and not out of reach for the average buyer. Another company that has been developing cars for the average consumer is Subaru; their new Impreza has a soft ride, a continuously variable transmission, an excellent safety rating and great fuel economy.

Now, in terms of repairs, Toyota has topped the list of manufacturers on reliability, fewer percentages of engine-related problems and lower average

repair costs. Hyundai, BMW, Honda and Volkswagen made the list too. So, here is a list of the best - lowest cost cars to own, based on following criteria: price of purchase, EPA fuel economy, and repair cost: Nissan Versa, Toyota Yaris, Hyundai Accent, Kia Rio, Chevy Aveo, Ford Focus, Honda Fit, Toyota Corolla, Kia Spectra, Toyota Tacoma and Nissan Sentra.

As a rule, the more expensive the car, the more expensive the parts are going to be. However, some manufacturers are much better than others at keeping stock parts. It is important to select the more popular rather than the obscure makes. If you haven’t heard, Volvo is notorious for that. Indeed, some classic cars can be easier and cheaper to fix, not only because the mechanics are simpler, but also production of the parts have been restarted due to demand. Whether you are purchasing a new or used car, do a bit of research. Check out the insurance cost on the car you are interested in, gas mileage, safety rating and above all: is this your “I can actually own this” car until you purchase your dream car.

For any questions or to get additional information on the different car manufacturers, feel free to contact us at Auto Tech and Body; give us a call at 954-946-9730.

But isn't it really dangerous there? Aren't you concerned about being kidnapped?" These are the first responses heard when announcing my upcoming business travel destination to Cartagena, Colombia.

Stereotypes and misconceptions - what a detrimental effect they can have to our willingness to explore and experience other cultures. I will admit, living in South Florida, I had my own ideas of what this trip would involve...but it certainly didn't end with me in the hands of rogue South American cocaine traffickers.

All too often I've visited countries that I've been told were not safe, only to find that my actual experience has been just the opposite. Do I keep my guard up? Of course. Looking too much like a tourist can attract unwanted attention, even in the "friendliest" of destinations. Heck, even when walking along Florida's beaches, I'm frequently asked where I'm from, or someone tries to sell me a tour package to the Everglades.

One habit I've developed when visiting foreign countries involves a quick bit of research for local festivals or art fairs that fall within my travel dates. In Cartagena, I was able to experience the first city-wide Bienal Internacional Arte Contemporaneo Cartagena de Indias, (BIACI), held this year from February 7th to April 7th.

Curated by Artistic Director Berta Sichel, BIACI included over 120 national and international artists exhibitions in 16 separate venues located inside Cartagena's colonial walled city. The exhibits included a diverse mix of works including paintings, sculptures, film, installation and performance art. With my BIACI map in hand, I went in search of a Juan Valdez coffee fix and the Museum of Contemporary Art.

My day was a chaotic mix of wandering the streets of Cartagena, and ducking into venues to take in a short film or visual arts exhibition. Overall, it was a perfect marriage of past and present. Designated as a part of the UNESCO World Heritage in 1984, the city is rich in Spanish colonial architecture, horse drawn carriages, and exotic food. Combining that with the infusion of modern art sprinkled like wonderful crumbs for me to find along the way, Cartagena proved to be a city that tops my list of places to return to.

So the next time I mention that I'm off to an unfamiliar destination, I still expect to be admonished for my choice. But from now on, I'm asking my own question. "When was the last time you were there?"

The most important lesson I've learned about travelling is that it has to be experienced, and not lived solely through the opinions of others. These parting thoughts brought to you by someone who has never been kidnapped...

FREEDOM IN FALLINGTeri Catlin on life, music, and mind over matter

YOUR CITY || MEET YOUR NEIGHBOR

Story by Dawne Richards; photo by James Stafford

Teri Catlin started writing songs at a young age. “Music was never a choice for me,” she tells us.

We’d guess that it’s this innate talent – and a seemingly bottomless well of inner strength – that has not just kept her going, but gotten her where she is today. Teri was given up at birth, and adopted into an abusive family in Flint, Michigan. She ran away at 16, following in the footsteps of her brother. It seems clear that the two did not have an easy childhood.

While she initially lived on the streets, she moved here at the suggestion of some friends about 20 years ago. She was homeless in South Florida for a little while too, until a friend from Dublin gave her a place to stay. “The planet housed me,” she smiles. She settled in, and worked at Sands Harbor for several years, but the music has always been there.

What drove her, we wondered? “Music!” she tells us. “I’ve had to kick down some doors.” Indeed. “I think a big part of my growth was being homeless and seeing people with nothing give something. I didn’t want to survive; I wanted to live; I love putting music in the world that emotionally touches people.”

Teri writes all of the parts of her songs. “I’m a storyteller…. I write about my life. My songs seem to uplift others, and they uplift me!” Locally, she has appeared at Dive Bar, the Bamboo room, the Funky Biscuit, and Tarpon Bend. “I gotta go to where the ears are…. People tell me my music is musician’s music. And there’s so much untapped talent down here. This is a mecca (for music).” She has played in front of Itzhak Perlman; Jimmy Page has been in the audience. While she performs at Lake Worth’s Pridefest, she doesn’t want to be known as a gay artist.

in the power of mind over matter. “People will hear my stories and I guess I seem approachable; they will share their personal stories and that’s a blessing for me.” She’s always had a dream to pull people off the streets, house them and feed them until they get educated. She still strives to be more

compassionate and understanding. In addition to her music, Teri practices Mixed Martial Arts and is a fierce supporter of supporting our planet.

She is self-taught on the guitar, drums, piano and bass, although she did study classical violin for nine years; her parents sent her to the Flint Institute of Music. “I can’t blow a thing, though,” she smiles. (Ed.’s note: five instruments, four self-taught? We’ll take it.)

We ask Teri what her advice would be to a 20 year old of today. She thinks for a moment, her striking green eyes looking into the distance. “If it’s not a choice for you, give it everything you have. Keep pushing for change in a positive way. About yourself, about people, about the planet. Keep doing what you love. Never give up. I’m a prime example of that….Life isn’t a lesson to be learned; it’s an adventure to be lived.” She’ll soon have an opportunity to share that advice with an even wider audience, when she participates in “the first speech I’ve ever done” in early May. Take note: Boca Raton hosts its first TEDx event at FAU’s University Theatre on May 9, and Teri has been invited to speak.

Wow. Ted talks. Jimmy Page. Itzhak Perlman. When we mention that it certainly seems that she has “made it;” she seems to disagree. Teri feels that she hasn’t reached enough people. Currently, she is looking for funding for her CD; there is a substantial cost to the pressing and studio time.

Whatever the future holds, we’re confident that Teri Catlin is up to the task. She will kick down doors and apply that brilliant, creative mind over any matters that get in her way. “There’s freedom in falling,” she asserts. We’d have to agree.

Listen to Teri’s amazing music and learn more at tericatlin.com. You're welcome.

She is a big believer

Jahlisa, a talented young writer, shares her musings from the perspective of one who is "on the verge" of adulthood. A Pompano Beach resident for ten years, Jahlisa is currently a senior Communications major at Bluefield College in Virginia. She has played soccer for the college for four years, and is a member of a sorority and student government associations. Jahlisa loves to read books of various genres, ranging from horror to fantasy to old classics such as the Brontë sisters. She is “absolutely obsessed” with the Twilight saga, and has hooked her family on it as well. POMPANOON SALE!

|||||||||▐ on the verge

Time to fish or cut baitThe long - awaited cap toss and inevitable tears are deliberately taking the long way around as I sit and wait for the day that marks my success and completion of the best and most demanding four years of my life. You’ve guessed it, graduation is just around the corner, and there are many things to consider as I contemplate the next step. So with the Indy 500 (complete with announcers and screaming fans) going on inside my head, I try to focus on the most important thing: work.

Though I have made a home here in Virginia among the mountains, valleys and quaint streets, there will never be a replacement for the shell - speckled beach and vacation weather town of Pompano. Even while dancing through snowflakes and smiling at falling leaves, there is a small space still waiting for the day that I can walk outside in shorts and a tank top because every day is perfect in South Florida. The only thing about wanting to go home is trying to find somewhere to stay. No job means living with mom for the rest of my life.

Now, I love my mother, and she would love to have me home (as all parents are required to say), but there is a part of me that pines for the chance to

make something of myself and take on my own responsibility. Looking for a job is not as easy as they make it look in the movies by far. You can’t simply type “Journalism” or “Broadcast” into a search engine and find the perfect match. There are steps to be taken, multiple resume uploads to be done and call backs that never happen. There should be a higher level class on how to do this successfully as a graduation requirement. Maybe then I would be able to find, acquire, and keep the Dream Job that people are always talking about. Something that tells you how to input “I am a motivated person with great communications skills who works well with others” and output something that pays for everything and allows you to do something you love.

Until recently, I had not been so eager to jump ship from the motherboard and venture out on my own; however, with Pompano Beach making so many renovations and bringing such a high class clientele to town, I may miss the opportunity to find a place of my own before the market booms and is too expensive for a newly graduated and unemployed stay-at-home daughter. Now I’m not looking for anything too special: a small fully furnished studio apartment with built in models to serve at my every beck and call would suffice. And if this place could be on the beach, so close that I could throw shells from my back porch and touch the crisp crashing waves, that would do just fine if you ask me.

With the exception of my little exaggeration, you can or will surely see that we were lucky to catch Pompano on sale and we all better fish or cut bait. Or maybe just buy before the price goes up.

Widely known across Africa for launching the country’s premier communications agency showcasing the growth of African notables, she was born in Washington D.C. to Nigerian immigrant parents. Eunice is using her diverse upbringing and extensive education (with Master’s degrees from Cornell and Columbia) to shed light on important issues for Africans, women’s needs, and entrepreneurship in their region.

A frequent motivational speaker, she volunteers stateside with ‘Dress for Success’ and created ‘Pana Fête,’ a fundraising event hosted by Applause Africa benefiting United Colors of Fashion for 2013. problem speaking and interacting with others, whether they are strangers or friends. My career to date involves people, whether I’m brokering deals, fundraising for a cause, or meeting new people for the first time and making a connection. People appreciate that I come across as honest and with good intentions and that I’m sincere in the way I help or interact with others.

That’s why I love volunteering and meeting new people. People give me energy and vice versa. I remember leading an image presentation as a volunteer for Dress for Success. The women who attended said they appreciated my practical approach to building a wardrobe and my sharing of personal funny and not so funny experiences of when I first started working after graduating from high school. Being open and honest is about who you are and who you really are shows people how “down to earth” you are. My actions speak louder than words and I think that’s what draws people close to me, I’m pretty down to earth. What do you enjoy most about your career?I enjoy connecting high achievers and companies with resources and information that help them grow. There’s this rush that I get when I’m working on a deal or helping a client achieve the seemingly impossible and especially when I need to come up with creative solutions. There’s nothing like meeting a challenge head on and at the end of the day, knowing that I’m helping others is the best feeling in the world.

What can we expect next from you?The next project I’m passionate about is to provide a platform where people can be and feel inspired to achieve their dreams. I’m also working on an entertainment documentary called “Footprints,” which provides a window into the lives of extraordinary trailblazers, highlighting the challenges and triumphs they encountered along their paths to success.Tell us something new, something bold that you’ve never told any other magazine…news tip. :)

I’ve never told any other magazine that I have a fascination with dresses; in fact, it’s almost a borderline obsession, especially cocktail and formal dresses. There are times that I will just randomly check “images” on Google for the latest trends in dresses. I will also seek out magazines just to stare at dresses. I think there’s something amazing about being a woman and dressing our bodies in a way that makes us feel and look sophisticated and fabulous and to truly own our femininity. I can literally spend hours looking at dresses and I love every moment of it. While I was the Fashion Editor of Applause Africa Magazine, I had a column called “DressMe”, where I would interview designers and ask about their dresses. I even started work on a fictional book called, “The Dress Authority,” featuring women and their favorite dresses and investigating why. It is an intriguing look into dress styles and messages.

One look at the intuitive glimmer in Carole Ramsay’s soulful eyes and you’ll get the distinct impression that she is somewhat of an “ethereal” being. “I was born an empath [a person who can feel and apprehend

the emotions of another], I grew up understanding and being a part of all things magical,” said Ramsay, certain that destiny brought her to the tropics in the mid-1990s to start her journey of spiritual healing. After a highly successful career in the corporate world, Ramsay hit the proverbial wall and decided to change her life. “I wanted to live my dream and share my gifts with others,” said the Canadian-born spiritualist, who strongly believes that without nurturing one’s spirit, the physical body will suffer. “No matter how much you exercise, if you neglect your spiritual essence, your emotional and physical issues will always be there.”

Into the Mystic

The adage “Better safe than sorry” is one that we all grew up with and accepted as truth. However, medically speaking, running a battery of routine tests on symptomless patients could do more harm than good. Here are just three tests a healthy patient might want to think twice about having:

Electrocardiogram or Exercise Stress Test False positive results can and do occur. In this case, unnecessary surgery, radiation and medication could be prescribed. If you are at a low risk for getting heart disease, ask questions before submitting to this test.

Bone Density Scan For women 65-plus or men 70-plus, this scan can reveal problems that need special treatment. But if you’re under 65, the risk of fracture is generally negligible. What’s more, the usual bone-strengthening medications prescribed for osteoporosis have been associated with chest pain, problems swallowing and thigh-bone breaks. The advised Rx for keeping bones healthy includes lifting weights, walking and taking Vitamin D and Calcium.

Colonoscopy Yes, a healthy person should definitely have this screening for colon cancer at 50. But by 75 years of age, if you never had to worry about your prior results, and you have no symptoms of a problem, you can likely skip this test. After all, the prep requirements alone are especially harsh on the older patient. And in some cases, post-procedure the patients can experience days or even weeks of digestive related problems.

Have you ever said “No” to the sale? Has there been a time that you wish you had said “No” to the sale because it ended up costing you twice as much in the long run? Have you been in a position where you wanted to say “No” but you said “Yes?” Did you know that you can say no gracefully and respectfully all while staying true to your brand and your instinct? At times, as business owners all we think of is the sale, the coin, that mean green, aka the “almighty dollar”. That’s perfectly normal but those times when we say yes to the “almighty dollar” are the times where the client ends up costing us twice as much in the long run. During the process, we regret our decisions but we don’t want to back out because of the financial loss. But, if you sit down and calculate what you are worth per hour, versus what the client is paying you, I guarantee that you are not breaking even-you’re working harder, not smarter. It’s ok to say no when it’s just not the right fit. Let’s talk about having the power to say no to the wrong sale:

What’s driving you to say "YES!"?

Think long and hard about what is pushing you to say yes to a client. Is it the prestige, the challenge or the money? There will always be times when we say yes to those unique projects that end up bringing us more business in the long run. Before you say yes to these types of pro bono or grassroots projects, think long and hard about the rewards. If you are purely saying yes to a client solely based on the financial gain – is it really the right move for you? Are you saying yes because you want to please the client? Are you saying yes because it’s polite? Are you saying yes because you can’t think about how to say no quickly enough? As a business owner, you know in your gut when you are acting out of fear or impulse. Go with those feelings and try to think it through and make an informed decision.

There are good aspects to saying "No!"

We all think that no is such a negative word, right? Wrong! It’s all in the delivery. Think about when you offer someone something to drink and they respond with, “No, thank you” versus them just saying, “No.” It’s all in the delivery. When you say no, you allow other opportunities to present themselves- which is a good thing. When you say no, you are setting boundaries and creating the space that you need to be productive in your business. When you say no, try to say it with grace. For example, “Thank you for the opportunity, but at this time I am unable to take on any additional clients.” Personally, when I receive this response (which I have), I think to myself "Wow, they must be really busy – now I really want to work with them." Or some may think, "I can’t believe they turned down my business." Either way, it doesn’t matter. What matters is that you have created the space to freely work with the clients that fit your brand.

Practice makes perfect!

You know how the saying goes: "Practice makes perfect." Do your research prior to meeting with a potential client, ask the right questions to understand their expectations and plan your no response and your yes response in advance. Being prepared to say no is key to feeling comfortable setting your business boundaries. Have the courage to stand by your decision and not hire clients that do not fit the core values of your brand. There may be times where you have to fire those clients that have made unrealistic demands and monopolize your time. In the beginning, hearing yourself saying no doesn’t feel good, but as you become comfortable with understanding the clients that best represent your company, saying no become a lot easier.

Come June, ArtHall will be back within the walls of the CRA Business Resource Center located at 50 NE 1st Street. This event is free and community participation is welcome to appreciate the artwork, meet the artists and enjoy the music and refreshments.

Artist Statement My art strives to uncover the story that lies within the people and places that surround us every day. I have a keen interest in architecture and find that each structure tells a poignant story of its history and occupants. From the weathering of wood, stone and brick, the subtle signs of fastidious care or neglect, to the interplay of light and shadow across its recessed surfaces, each façade is as telling as a human face. In terms of color, I prefer bold, vivid color which evokes the mood of a particular place rather than stark reality.
