Performing Arts Events & NewsCreative opportunities for patients, staff and visitors at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust.

The Performing Arts Programme is delivered by Breathe Arts Health Research and made possible with support from Guy’s and St Thomas’ Charity.

2 3

Hello from Breathe Arts Health Research and welcome to our autumn season, jam-packed with Performing Arts for staff, patients and visitors at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, made possible by Guy’s and St Thomas’ Charity.

Within this programme, we are excited to share our Breathing Spaces live performances over the coming months; Guitarist Pablo Domínguez fills St Thomas’ Central Hall with Flamenco flavours, Magpie Dance returns with a unique performance to mark Remembrance Day and an added extra this season from our friends at Dance Umbrella, who bring The Urban Playground team to Guy’s Courtyard with a dynamic dance and parkour display.

The Breathe community continues to expand in more ways than one. Tim introduces a sprinkling of new artists set to make their Breathing Spaces

debut, including Jazz-scene rising stars James Davison and Misha Mullov-Abbado. Hannah has been working alongside the Respiratory team with our new Singing for Breathing Group, which has significantly grown in size and confidence. And, Georgia has met with Guy’s and St Thomas’ staff interested in helping us to shape our programme and speaking with inspiring patients about their Breathe experiences — thank you Stephanie for sharing your story with us (check it out on page 18).

We hope you enjoy getting to know more about the range of Performing Arts activities we design and deliver as you browse through!

Looking forward to seeing you at an event soon.

About Breathe Arts Health Research

The Breathe Arts Health Research team believe everybody has the equal right to lead a happy, healthy and fulfilled life. For some people, however, there are significant barriers to this: ill health, a stressful job, loneliness, or simply living in a society that is not well adapted to their physical or emotional needs.

The arts can offer people facing these challenges something very special: the chance to discover their creativity and interact with others, giving them purpose and value. By breathing music, magic, dance — and much more — into healthcare spaces and communities, we offer people hope, friendship and fulfilment when they need it most.

Breathe Arts Health Research do this through a diverse range of evidence - based Performing Arts Programmes, co-created with clinicians in order to deliver specific health and wellbeing outcomes for patients and staff.

We are a renowned Arts in Health Social Enterprise, also known for Melodies for Mums — our pioneering programme for mothers with or at risk of postnatal depression, and our Breathe Magic Intensive Therapy Programme for young people aged 7-19 with hemiplegia.

We are the proud charity of Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, which includes Guy’s, St Thomas’ and Evelina London hospitals as well as community sites.

We raise money that helps the Trust fund life changing research, specialist equipment and better facilities, above and beyond what the NHS can provide. We are able to provide this support thanks to the generosity of patients, families, staff, philanthropists and members of our community who donate or fundraise for us.

These vital funds have enabled the Trust to buy toys for children cared for by Evelina London at Christmas, a 3D printer that will help improve transplant care and pioneering robotic surgery equipment. The funds also support the welfare and professional development of staff and improve the clinical environment for everyone.

Breathe Magic Richard Eaton

“Breathe is a prime example of developing new approaches to healthcare which harness the therapeutic benefits of the arts and creativity. I was incredibly impressed by the miracles worked by this small social enterprise.”

“Donations to the Charity help fund life changing research, specialist equipment and better facilities — all above and beyond what the NHS can provide.”

Former MP Secretary of State for Health and Social Care

Breathing Spaces: Live Performances

The Performing Arts Programme at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust is a suite of participatory music, dance, poetry and other arts projects that improve staff and patients’ health and wellbeing. This is underpinned by our regular live performances (Breathing Spaces) across the healthcare spaces, which contribute to a more welcoming and relaxing environment. All of this is delivered by an exceptional team who believe the arts offers people facing challenges something very special.

Live Performances: Breathing SpacesBased on research that the arts can significantly reduce anxiety levels, encourage relaxation and help with pain relief, our free live performances including music, dance, theatre, poetry, puppetry and magic invite you to enjoy a Breathing Space and are run in all areas of Guy’s and St Thomas’.

Participatory ProjectsProjects that creatively integrate and use Performing Arts in clinical and therapeutic programmes, tailored to specific patient and staff groups. Designed to improve clinical outcomes and create new ways of working.

Singing for Breathing Group

Participatory Projects: Latest News

We have had a fantastic response to our new Singing for Breathing Group, which now has 25 members enjoying fun breathing exercises and songs from around the world. The demand for singing to improve breath control and wellbeing for patients with respiratory conditions is clear, and it has been amazing to see Guy’s and St Thomas’ patients seeking opportunities that will benefit their lung health.

We are excited to be developing this programme in collaboration with Guy’s and St Thomas’ Respiratory Team — and due to high demand, we are increasing our sessions to two a month.

Singing for Breathing Participant

“Singing has really made a difference to my lung function, I feel much better after a session. The improvement is significant and long-lasting. The group sessions are really something I look forward to — singing together in a group is really good fun.”

Cleo Lane is a singer/song-writer/arranger and choir leader. She has worked with acappella vocal groups for over 30 years. Having written and performed with various bands and been signed to Warner Chapel Publishing, driven by her belief in the unifying power of music, she went on to set up a variety of community music groups in and around London since the early noughties. Projects included Make some Noise music workshops for parents and toddlers in Jackson’s Lane Community centre, and teaching singing and song writing skills to excluded children through the Children’s Fund in Wandsworth schools and play schemes.

In 2002 Cleo co-founded Creative Inclusion and has managed and taught on a variety of exciting projects with young people and adults combining the mediums of poetry, art, musicianship and voice to produce original material

in and of local communities. In 2010 Cleo set up Hackney Voices Community choir with co leader Joanna Foster bringing a variety of folk, world and pop music to the heart of Hackney in glorious acapella harmony.

As well as the Singing for Breathing sessions at Guys and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, Cleo has been running Singing for Breathing sessions at All Saints Health Centre over the past 2 years. Cleo also runs The Mudlarks Choir — founded 2012 — and The Feel Good Choir — fresh out of the box last year! — in Southend where she lives with her husband and daughter. Cleo enjoys singing, song writing and arranging for her 3 piece all female folk band The Ondines and in jazz/folk quartet Anima, who you may encounter in our Singing in The Building strand.

Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust patient Stephanie Armstrong was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease in 2005. A Primary School teacher originally from Canada but now living in Surrey, she saw an increase in symptoms last year and struggled to get them under control. This meant periodic visits to Guy’s Hospital and feeling gravely ill. Stephanie told us;

“Crohn’s is a hideous and embarrassing disease. Talking about how it affects you is humiliating, even when speaking to physicians... I was living a ghost-like life, just going through the motions of living.”

In May 2019, Stephanie went to Guy’s Hospital expecting a routine appointment like any other, but approached us after an inspiring encounter with Breathe Musician, Guillermo Rozenthuler. Guillermo transformed Stephanie’s hospital experience with a Breathing Spaces performance in the outpatient waiting room she was in.

“I cannot tell you how appreciative I am to you for arranging for Guillermo to visit and offer that brief, but wonderful, escape from our worries

and stresses as we sat in that waiting room… I was pleasantly surprised when a guitarist arrived and offered to play his guitar and to sing to us. This gentleman was kind and empathetic to those waiting to be seen and incredibly engaging.”

Guillermo is one of 14 Resident Musicians in our Breathing Spaces programme who play daily across clinical units, wards and waiting areas helping to calm, uplift and inspire patients. Each session is sensitive to the surrounding healthcare space, and offers a shared cultural event, sense of community and social interaction across Guy’s and St Thomas’.

Stephanie said;

“Guillermo’s musical playing and singing was beautiful, but it was the connection that he made with his audience that was so special. After telling everyone a little bit about himself, an elderly Mexican couple asked him to play some Mexican music, which he happily did. The elderly gentleman proceeded to sing along with an equally wonderful voice.

@BreatheAHR#BreathingSpacesStephanie’s Story

A hospital appointment I couldn’t wait to tell my friends about

Guy’s and St Thomas’ patient Stephanie Armstrong speaks to Breathe’s Communications Coordinator Georgia, following a recent unexpected experience at Guy’s Hospital... “Your programme

turned what was an uneventful and routine hospital appointment into something special.”

The experience was magical… Guillermo’s visit offered an opportunity for all of us waiting there to be more than a room full of worried and ill people. For those thirty minutes, we were music enthusiasts and an audience that hung on every word that Mr. Rozenthuler uttered.”

“Your programme turned what was an uneventful and routine hospital appointment into something special that I could tell my colleagues about when I returned to work today! Thank you very much for everything that you do to support the increasing of wellness in hospital patients. It does make a difference.”

At Breathe Arts Health Research, we are committed to providing moments of music, magic, dance — and much more — to improve patient, visitor and GSTFT staff wellbeing. Stories like Stephanie’s help us tell others about the work we do. If you would like to share your Breathing Spaces story, please get in touch with Georgia at [email protected] Br
