    PERFECT TENSE

    It describes a finished activity.

    ( Complete Tenses ).

    Perfect Tense includes PRESENT

    PERFECT TENSEand PAST PERFECT

    TENSE.

    Present Perfect Tense

    Present Perfect Tense is formed by :

    the auxiliary verb + past participle

    (have/has)

    There are three functions ofPresent Perfect Tense :-

    - Show an action/situation that happened in an unspecified

    time in the past.

    - Show an action/situation that happened more than once atunspecified times in the past.

    - Show an action/situation that began in the past and

    continues to be true

    1. We use the Present Perfect Tense to show an

    action/situation that happened in an unspecified time inthe past.

    Example :

    - UNITAR has opened a new city campus in Kuantan, Pahang.

    - I have been to Europe.

    Time words that can be used in this type of Present Perfect Tenseis such as recently, lately, just and already.

    Example :

    - Recently, UNITAR has opened a new city campus in Kuantan,Pahang

    - Lately, I have been to Europe.

    2. We use the Present Perfect Tense to show an

    action/situation that happened more than once atunspecified times in the past.

    Example :

    - Norma has seen the movie three times.

    - Farah and Lina have flown to London five times.

    Time words that can be used in this type of Present PerfectTense is such as up to nowand so far.

    Example :- Up to now, Norma has seen the movie three times.

    - Farah and Lina have flown to London five times so far.

    3. We use the Present Perfect Tense to show an

    action/situation that began in the past and continues tobe true.

    Example :

    Past Perfect Tense

    Past Perfect Tense is formed by :

    (had)

    There are three functions ofPast Perfect Tense :-

    - show two situation or actions that happened in the past.

    - show a situation or action that happened before a

    particular time in the past.

    1. We use the Past Perfect Tense to show twosituation or actions that happened in the past. The

    verb of the earlier action is in the past perfect, while

    the verb of the later action is in the simple past.

    Example :

    - I had submitted my thesis before the lecturerchanged

    - AfterI had written a letter to my mother last night, I went

    to bed.

    Practice 1: Present Perfect Tense
