The Bathing Mobility Advisory Service (BMAS) specialises in making bathing easier for those who are struggling to use the bath or shower they have in their own home.Owner Bobby Clyde established BMAS many years ago as a family run business, focused on helping people to retain their independence by providing expert advice and a compassionate service.Bobby explained: “Many of our client’s we have helped wanted to regain their independence and did not want to rely on home care... but they were unaware of the options for bathing or showering in safety while remaining in their own home.” BMAS understands that deciding to install a walk in shower, walk in bath or wetroom, is an important decision and that many of their customers are apprehensive about “salesmen” coming to the door.Bobby continued: “We are bathing mobility experts and we exist to give the proper advice to help you make an informed choice about the best bathing solution for you or a loved one, we also specialise in future proofing your bathroom.”BMAS have fitted hundreds of walk in baths, walk in showers and wetrooms across Edinburgh and the Lothian’s and have an unequalled reputation for listening to their customers and installing cost-effective and beautiful long lasting solutions.Bobby confessed that he was proud of the glowing testimonials and referrals from customers BMAS has helped to regain their independence. He added: “We ensure that we complete all work to schedule and that our tradesmen clean up any mess. All work is only signed off as

complete when both the client and BMAS installation manager are completely satisfied that the standards have been fully met.If you can’t make it to the showroom, a free ‘no obligation’ in-home assessment is available throughout Edinburgh and the Lothian’s.

DEADLINE FOR OCTOBER ISSUE - 17TH SEPTEMBER

Sitting here with the rain bouncing off the window, clad in a woolly jumper, it seems that summer has abruptly vanished for another year and, with the arrival of September, the long awaited independence vote is finally imminent. It’s a subject Peebles Life has tried hard to remain neutral about, (to the point of pretty much avoiding it), however, this month, the Big Issue has bitten the bullet and looks both to the past and the future of our country.

Of course, there are other things going on as we live in such a busy wee place! In a welcome return to its traditional home at Hay Lodge Park, Peebles Highland Games take place on the 6th September and we would like to wish them a lovely day for their competitions. Out and About features an invitation to an open event from Peebles Camera Club, one to join the Ladies Over 60’s Badminton Club and details of a programme of Scottish Country Dance classes – with five running in Peeblesshire alone, there is bound to be one to suit! We also have information on the forthcoming exhibitions at the Tweeddale Museum and the Music In Peebles 2014/15 programme, comprising seven concerts throughout the winter months. Staying with music, Peebles Youth Orchestra introduce their new conductor, taking over from Claire Garnett who has led the group for an incredible 35 years! Finally we look forward to Just Imaginarium, running at the Eastgate Theatre in October.

In regular items, we have reports from the Pensioner’s Association, the rugby and cricket clubs, and the regular gardening column along with our ever-popular recipe from Val at The Sunflower. In our Peebles Portrait we have a first. Philip Hutton was one of our earliest Portraits and this month we are delighted to introduce his wife, the intrepid Robina Hutton. Finally we have our updates from The Bridge and the Community Centre who introduce a new club, School’s Out, which may well be the answer to the Friday afternoon issue for working parents now the asymmetric week is in place.

As ever, we invite your thoughts, opinions and comments. If there’s something you think we should get irate about, something you would like to share with the town (either an event or a success) or someone you think would make a fascinating Portrait, do get in touch. We’re waiting!

Big Issue No-one can argue that Scotland has punched well above its weight in worldwide influence over the years. From inventors like John Logie Baird, John MacAdam and Alexander Graham Bell through to visionaries like John Paul Jones who established the US Navy and John Muir who set up the great American National Parks, Scots have well and truly left their mark on the wider world. Advances in medicine like the discovery of penicillin by Alexander Fleming and anaesthetic by Sir James Young Simpson have given greater longevity to the human race. Heck, even the Bank of England was founded by Scotsman, William Paterson. However the question will always remain as to whether these men, amongst others, were so creative because Scotland formed part of the United Kingdom or whether they would have achieved similar in an independent nation.

By the time this Big Issue reaches the doorsteps of Peebles and Cardrona, Scotland will be on the final lap of a debate that has been going on for years or even centuries, depending on your viewpoint. Campaigning, which appeared to take a welcome break during the Commonwealth Games, will be ramped up as the 18th September approaches with each side determined to convince the voting

population of the veracity of their arguments.

Since the starting gun was fired in Spring 2013, Yes Scotland and Better Together have both attempted to address the main issues. They’ve looked at what currency an independent Scotland would use, which international organisations it would be a member of, how the transfer of membership might work and how the oil revenue would be split. We’ve seen opinions on a new defence structure and overseas presence and even whether Scotland would need a new national broadcaster. Financially, concerns have been raised about what would happen to the pensions and benefits systems, how the tax system might change and whether an independent Scotland would be able to cope in the event of another banking crisis. Debates have included the topic of border controls, the challenges of the UK and Scotland having different immigration policies and who would be entitled to a Scottish passport.

We’ve listened to opinions from politicians naturally but also from international leaders, from business people and, regularly, from celebrities (though quite what makes an actor’s opinion more valid than that of us non famous residents is a mystery). There have

been mailshots, billboards, televised debates and public hustings which have shown a far greater engagement in this debate than in many elections. People do seem to be genuinely involved and that can’t be a bad thing at all. However, through all of this the polls have changed very little and, with neither side apparently having an unassailable predicted majority at the time of writing, the result cannot be certain until the count is complete.

With the cost of staging the referendum alone estimated at around £13million, without taking into account the sums donated to and spent by each side in the debate, one thing is sure, Scotland cannot go back and keep reviewing the same issue, using valuable time and resources to do so. As a country, we need to accept the decision made at the ballot box and work together to ensure a bright future for Scotland and the generations to come, whether that be as an independent nation or as part of the United Kingdom. We owe it to our inventive predecessors to carry their legacy into the future.

Peebles Camera Club is bringing Colin Prior to Peebles on 30th October 2014 for a special open meeting which will be held at The Eastgate Theatre. Colin is considered by many to be Scotland’s leading landscape photographer. His talk is “The Journey So Far” which covers three decades of photography, not only in Scotland, but in many of the wild places throughout the world. He will touch on his current projects, one in Scotland, the other in Pakistan’s Karakoram mountains. Colin was recently featured in an episode of the BBC Adventure Show called “Colin Prior - Mountain Man”. In

his photography Colin captures sublime moments of light and land; the result of meticulous planning and preparation that often takes years to achieve. He seeks out patterns in the landscape and hidden links between reality and the imagination.

Colin is a Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society and a founding member of the International League of Conservation Photographers. He has exhibited in the Glasgow Science Centre; OXO Tower Gallery, London; Museum of Education, Glasgow and The Linhof Gallery in London. His seven books,

published internationally by Constable, include The World’s Wild Places and High Light. His latest, collector’s edition, Scotland’s Finest Landscapes, is presented in a clamshell box and published in November 2014 includes many photographs which are recognisable through his style of photography. His calendars have won in two categories at the National Business Calendar Awards in London on two consecutive years.

The very best live music is coming to the Eastgate Theatre, Peebles, as Music in Peebles unveils its 2014/15 concert season. Over the course of seven concerts there will be music from three centuries, and musicians who include the world-famous and the best of the new generation. There’s also a distinctive Scottish strand to the season, with four concerts featuring musicians or composers from Scotland.

The season is framed by two of

today’s foremost young string quartets, the Gildas (previous winners of the prestigious Tunnell Trust Award) and the Maxwell (four outstanding Scottish string players led by Peebles violinist Colin Scobie). The concert by the Maxwell Quartet will include music by Borders-based composer Ronald Stevenson.

Two of the UK’s leading pianists appear in consecutive concerts, Martin Roscoe in a solo recital and Benjamin Frith with his own piano quartet.

There are also two exciting string and piano duos, Naomi Pavri (cellist of the Scottish Ensemble) with husband Fali and the phenomenal young violinist Chloe Hanslip with pianist Danny Driver.

Completing the line-up, there is a real treat for fans of wind music, as the Eastgate Theatre will reverberate to the thrilling sound of the 13 members of the Scottish Wind Ensemble.

To find out more, you can pick up a leaflet (you’ll find them at the Eastgate Theatre and other selected locations), or you can visit www.musicinpeebles.org.uk where you will find full details of all the concerts and the artists appearing, plus lots of information about Music in Peebles.

Membership has its benefits!

You are warmly invited to come along to any of our concerts, but better still, why not become a member? Membership, which gives entry to all seven concerts, costs just £60, saving you £38 over the season and giving you other benefits including priority booking for next season.

For further details, please pick up a leaflet and application form, visit the website or contact Tony Bell, Membership Secretary (01721 722788).

The Peebles Highland Games are back again, after a year’s absence, and will be held in the newly upgraded Haylodge Park on Saturday 6th September from 11AM to 5PM.

In addition to the pipe band and heavies competitions, we have introduced a haggis hurling competition and brought back the tug o’ war event, subject to enough entries being received. Malt whisky tasting sessions, complete with detailed notes and history, are also temptingly available.

It is expected that over 20 pipe bands will attend, with 30 performances, competing in Novice Juvenile and Grades 4, 3 and 2. There will also be

adult and juvenile drum major competitions.

It is also expected that at least 8 ‘heavies’ competitors will attend to tackle ‘putting the shot’, ‘throwing the 16lb hammer and 28lb weight’, ‘tossing the caber’, etc.

No outdoor event like this would be complete without the various food stalls, entertainment stalls and the fun fares.

To make all this happen, our dedicated committee are greatly in need of helpers, on Friday 5th Sept. for a few hours from about 1pm and on Games Saturday to ‘man’ gates and park cars, etc.

Anyone wishing to offer their services, for an annual local event, please contact:-

Peebles Youth Orchestra was founded in 1978 and since that time hundreds of children have enjoyed playing music together in the weekly rehearsals. They have had a lot of fun getting know a wide repertoire of music while developing the skills and strategies of orchestral playing. Claire Garnett has been conducting the group for the last 35 years. Conducting also involves planning the music, making sure there are suitable parts for every player (often writing special parts), and arranging all the details of the many successful concerts. “I love working with the Youth Orchestra,” says Claire, “But it is a huge commitment and I do feel I have done my stint after all these years!” So it is excellent news that she has a worthy successor in Kenneth McAllister, who takes over her baton this autumn.

Kenneth has worked in London as a freelance player

with all the major Orchestras and both the Opera Houses. He has also taught, examined and coached, throughout his career, and was involved from the outset with the Centre for Young Musicians. He continues to perform, conduct and to teach. Since retiring to Dawyk, he has become enthusiastic about music in the Peebles community and has been helping the young musicians in the Youth Orchestra.

Kenneth brings a breath of fresh air to this long established group – an ambitious and exciting musical programme and plans to draw in new players. There have always been a few adults who play alongside the children and they really enjoy getting orchestral playing at an easier level than in the main symphony orchestra. This season it is hoped to draw in other adults from the community – perhaps you are one of those who

played an instrument at school but work and family commitments meant the instrument stayed in its box for many years? Perhaps now is the time to get it out and start again? You can’t have a better opportunity than in this friendly group, playing fine music with expert tuition - also ideal for the adult beginner.

Children of any age and any stage are welcome to come along – there are challenging parts for the competent players and easier for beginners – everyone can fit in. Any orchestral instrument is welcome and those who don’t play one could join the percussion section, learning to read music as they play.

Every player has the support of instrumental coaches so no-one will be anxious.

Rehearsals are on Wednesday evenings from 6.15 to 7.15 in St Joseph’s Community Centre, starting on September 10th – find out more from Kenneth on 01721 760325 [email protected] or just come along and join in!

J u s t I m a g i n a r i u mThe Eastgate Theatre is preparing to get turned inside out, outside in and upside down next month when the great Imaginarium festival of fun for young people takes over the whole building from Wednesday 15 to Sunday 19 October.

With workshops in everything from film making, to circus skills, craft making to comedy; daily storytelling and informal music sessions; and performances by award-winning companies both in the theatre and on the streets Imaginarium 2014 is set to be the busiest ever.

The festival kicks off on Wednesday 15th at 10am when would-be Spielbergs begin to storyboard their own five minute film to be premiered in the theatre on the big screen on Sunday 19th at 4pm.

Daytime activities then centre on the indoor bothy, downstairs, where visitors can enjoy storytelling, readings by Peebles personalities, ballads performed by visiting mistrels and workshops making the beasties, flowers and bonkers birds that will invade the studio all week.

While all this is going up downstairs, upstairs the theatre is the base for storytelling by the wonderful Poppy Browne and her ginormous book, daily dance and circus skills workshops and a comedy masterclass.

The performance programme this year is the

strongest ever. Toto Tales perform their stunning Starbird (for everyone over 3) on Thursday at 12.30pm. The Edinburgh Guide described it as “Possibly the most Beautiful Children’s Show in the World!” On Friday at 12.30pm Tall Tales Theatre Company brings Emily Brown and the Thing to Peebles, will anyone in town get any sleep ever again? That evening comedian Stephen Halkett and his friends arrive with Happy Laffy Hour for everyone over six.

On Saturday morning Imaginarium spills out onto the streets of Peebles as Ramshacklicious’ Jack takes his shopping trolley on a theatrical musical walkabout, with periodic performances for pedestrians. The theatre is the venue for Professor Heisenhoff’s Big Birthday Bash before it becomes the circus big top. At 7pm Theatre sans Frontieres presents its intriguing new show Heaven Eyesfor everyone over nine years old.

Imaginarium winds down in style on Sunday when Tell Tale Hearts present two performances of Inside Out featuring the hunt for a lost hat, a sock dance and a mountain top rescue for everyone over two. At 4pm the red carpet will be in place for the final event - the world premiere of Imaginarium’s five-minute films.

School holidays have never been this good. Imaginarium is delivered as part of the partnership between Peebles Creative Place 2014 and the Eastgate Theatre. For more information, to buy tickets contact Eastgate Theatre box office on 01721 725777 or www.eastgatearts.com

Nestling in 65 acres of rolling Borders’ countryside Dawyck Botanic Garden, near Stobo, is a world-class arboretum worthy of international renown. Yet, it not only attracts visitors to the area, it has a rightful place in the hearts of the countless local people who have come to recognise the ongoing beauty of its transitions throughout the year.

Dawyck really is a Garden for all seasons. So, with summer fading in our memories and a distinct autumnal feel in the air, there are fresh reasons to enjoy this remarkable landscape. It is in the autumn that Dawyck’s ever-changing kaleidoscope of seasonal tones climaxes. The coming weeks will witness a gradual shift as golden foliage emerges from the green, before eventually bursting through into a sensational vision of vivid reds and rich oranges.

Maples and rowans will take on implausibly striking tones; the silver bark of beech and birch trees will shine in contrast with their golden leaves and the elegant dawn redwoods beside the burn will add softer tones, glowing like the embers of a fire. Fruits are already parading

a startling array of shapes, colours and textures, from acorns in cups and colourful crab apples to maple keys and fir cones. Before long children will be enjoying a rich harvest of conkers, shed from the Garden's horse chestnuts. By climbing up high and looking back down over the Garden, we will be enthralled as a full rich tapestry evolves.

But, as the Garden can be enjoyed in any season so too can it be appreciated in many different ways. Throughout the year, Dawyck hosts a catalogue of events. Coming up before the end of the season, on

November 30, is a raft of events ranging from guided walks and fungi forays to fun story-telling and crafts for children with Poppy Browne even a special Mushrooms for Minors gathering.

After any outing in the Garden – be it a solitary amble, family walk or guided tour – many will choose to pause and reflect on their visit in the warmth of the Dawyck Cafe. Housed within the visitor centre, the cafe helped secure Dawyck’s place as VisitScotland’s first 5-star graded Garden and has its strength in locally sourced home-produced delicacies. Regular patrons are well-accustomed to excellent homemade soups, tasty savouries and a delicious range of cakes, crumbles and pies. Finally, before heading through the shop towards the door, departing visitors would be well advised to spare a few extra moments for a short detour to visit 'Blueprint' this autumn’s exhibition, by Anne Rae, in the Studio – and, perhaps, sit down and view a short DVD about Dawyck and the other three Gardens of the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh.

Meeting at home, it is clear that Robina and Philip Hutton have an eclectic mix of interests. With previous Portrait, Philip’s, artwork covering the walls and an impressive book collection lining an entire room, continued learning is obviously very important to this month’s Portrait, Robina. Indeed, as a founder member of Tweeddale U3A, it is a passion that she works hard to share with others.

Born in Scotland, during the war, to a Canadian pilot who had met and married her mother whilst training locally, Robina spent her early years between Newton Stewart and Canada before her mother finally took Robina and her two younger brothers to live in London as Robina was approaching her teens. Robina embraced the opportunities to visit the museums and attend concerts at the Festival Hall, though admits that school wasn’t particularly important to her.

Leaving school, Robina took a secretarial course, leading to a variety of jobs, including a commission based job involving matching properties to renters. With two young children to support, this was clearly challenging and in 1965 she decided to take advantage of the government backed £10 passage to Canada scheme, remarking that she was looking for better opportunities for both her children and herself. Given that she only knew one person in Toronto and had no job lined up, it was clearly a brave move.

Life in Canada suited the family with its blue sky and sunny summers and, indeed, Robina’s son, Mark, went on to become a professional American Football player though she understood few

of the game terms! Employment saw her become involved in the growth of a specialist antiques and paintings removal business before she decided to better herself by qualifying in human resources at evening class. This led to a job as a personnel manager within a large insurance company with responsibility for 750 employees at head office alone. It is a job she relished, particularly within a counselling context, helping managers sort out their people problems, though she freely admits she was grateful her team were backing her up with the number crunching!

In 1990, with her father in ill health, Robina returned to Scotland, eventually becoming a tutor with Lauder College and running job clubs for the unemployed across the south east of the country. Knowing few people, she joined a singles club and, during an organised walk from the Tontine to Neidpath Castle, met Philip. The rest, as they say, is history with them marrying in 1997 and setting up home in Peebles.

Within Peebles, Robina is probably best known as a founder member of the local U3A group. Established in Peebles in October 2004, U3A is part of a national organisation for anyone who does not work full-time and who wishes to continue their education within a more social setting. From a turnout of 50 people at the first meeting, there are now 150 members who can not only attend monthly meetings with speakers but also form separate interest groups including the likes of history or science, meeting with others to share their knowledge or learning. Robina subsequently joined the U3A national board as a trustee for Scotland and set

up a development committee to encourage new groups in areas from Orkney to Stranraer, successfully establishing 18 new groups. A highlight of her involvement in the organisation came when she was invited to speak in the House of Lords in 2012 debating the crisis in care.

Turning to Peebles, Robina likes the unique High Street, over which she has fantastic views, and the layout of the town with its river and hills. She also loves that it is a town where you are bound to meet someone you know every time you leave the house and is a fan of the pedestrian crossing on the High Street, remarking that her time in Canada, where jaywalking is illegal, probably influences this. In terms of whom she admires, Robina does not hesitate to name Mary Reid who, she comments, has done a lot of charitable work including with both U3A and the John Buchan Centre, in a quiet but tenacious fashion.

Finally, we turn to what people don’t know about Robina. In 1993 she received a call from her daughter, who at that time was living in Baltimore and had decided that she wished to move her life to LA to become an actress. Undaunted, Robina set off for Baltimore where they loaded a car, a U-haul and a trailer with Sue’s belongings, her two children and two parrots and set off across country. Over eight days they passed through twelve states, travelled along Route 66, spent a night in the hills of New Mexico and covered 2,600 miles. There is the sense that this was just another adventurous opportunity for Robina in a life full of them.

Physical exercise is good for you we all know that. Everyone can benefit from exercise to help improve their life and carry out their daily routines keeping them strong and mobile. But what happens when you become older, a bit more frail and perhaps suffer from age related illnesses like arthritis? Should you carry on exercising? The answer is YES unless you have been advised for medical reasons not to. The more active you remain will help your physical and mental health. As you get older you may fear exercise feeling you may hurt yourself, can’t do it, or feel you need to use equipment you are not comfortable using. You may not feel confident about going out for a walk, joining a class or exercising on your own but believe me they

can be good for you, both physically and mentally. I know whenever I go out for a walk I always meet people who smile, say hello or even stop for a chat and I can say the same happens in the local classes whether they are fitness/pilates yoga or dance. Exercise takes many shapes and forms, don’t be afraid to try something new or even carry on doing something you are already doing. The less you do the less mobile and weaker you will become. Reduce stress, have fun, keep mobile, keep strong, improve your health, how many more reasons do you need? Go for it, you may even enjoy it, in fact I know you will!

No blackbirds sing at dawn now but the robin is already marking out his winter territory, unseen, singing from the hedge or a tree at the bottom of the garden, reminding you to get in supplies of bird food for the winter. The year is turning: the hillside is gold and bronze, bulbs are ready to be planted and there is plenty to do in the garden. Everything you do now will make next spring better.

If you have planted late-flowering perennials like rudbeckias, heleniums, cimicifuga or Japanese anemones there will be plenty of colour into next month. It is a good idea not to do much cutting back until spring because many insects live in that layer of dying foliage and they are vital food for birds like blue tits, robins and other insect eaters.

Get the old compost heap turned over in readiness for mulching any newly planted areas. Mulch can be applied as long as the soil is still warm. Make a new heap of fresh stuff like spent flowers, soft stems and leaves, for example, hostas. Keep woody branches out and either take them to the tip or burn them. Later this month rake and bag any leaves that fall on the lawn; leaf mould is a great soil improver and makes excellent mulch too.

The lawn needs some attention if you can work on dry days. Raking out thatch and moss is the best way to improve the grass. Keep the grass cut short and often and apply an autumn dressing to keep weeds down and discourage moss over the winter. In poorly drained situations it is a good idea to spike the lawn and apply a top dressing of sharp sand and compost.

Leave pruning deciduous shrubs until early winter and concentrate on any conifer hedges or clipped plants that need to be in good

shape before the frosts; the cut tips will go brown if they are burnt by frost or cold wind. Remember most conifers will not grow back from old wood so trim lightly twice a year in late spring and early autumn.

In the productive garden make full use of crops that won’t keep, like beans and peas, and leave the leeks and brassicas for later. Add the stems and roots of legumes to the compost or dig them in to rot down over the winter. Under glass or in the tunnel, watch out for whitefly and try to maintain an even temperature.

Reward yourself for all this hard work with some gorgeous bulbs for next spring! Remember how you admired other people’s tulips? They are good in pots in a sunny position or in well-drained parts of the garden. I’m going to choose really vibrant colours for the courtyard which should look great against the white walls. Whatever you choose, buy the fattest bulbs you can and plant them after you have put in the crocuses and daffodils.Sheila DrummondPortland Garden Design07905 [email protected]

Many thanks to all who bought ducks for our Duck Race which was run on the Cuddy on 9th August. The water was at a perfect level to ensure the ducks kept moving at a steady pace, although it was still sufficiently fast to present a challenge to the duck “gatherers” stationed at the finish line! The three speediest ducks belonged to Jessie Dunn (no 228, £100), Ian McLeod (no 38, £50) and Brian Hinton (no 402, £25). Thanks are also due to all who came along to our coffee morning on the following Saturday. The two events together raised over £1000 for Band funds.

Our Autumn Concert will be held in the Burgh Hall on Friday 5th at 7.30pm. As readers of this column will know the Band is travelling to Germany later in the month to attend a music festival in the spa town of Bad Schlema and we will be showcasing some of the German programme in the concert. This should be an exciting event as we have included a lot of toe tapping pieces suitable for an audience of 4000 in a very

large “bierkeller” tent. The Burgh Hall is a significantly smaller venue and we will be serving wine rather than beer, however the atmosphere should be just as good and you can always use your imagination! The concert will have strong Scottish content as we will also be joined by some members of the Tweedvale Pipe Band who will play some individual sets as well as combining with the Silver Band. The junior development band will also take part in the concert and there will be an opportunity to buy tickets for our ever popular raffle. Tickets for the concert are £6 (£4 for under 12’s) and can be obtained at Keystore or from any band member.

As mentioned above, we are playing a selection of about a dozen pieces of music at the concert which is part of our program for Germany. However they only constitute part of the program as we are taking nearly 50 different items of music which will be required to cover four concerts and one, possibly two, parades. Seven of the items are

German marches which we will be playing as part of a massed band’ performance involving all of the 20 participating bands numbering nearly 600 musicians. I hope the audience stands well back! The Silver Band itself will number 31 strong and includes 6 members of the Tweedvale Pipe Band. With the pipers in attendance there should be no doubt as to our country of origin and will ensure a strong Scottish flavour to our concerts. We fly out on of Friday 19th and should certainly arrive in plenty of time as our first concert isn’t scheduled until 11.55pm that night. We play a further two concerts on Saturday afternoon and evening and another one on Sunday evening plus participating in one of the parades during the day. As we fly back fairly late on Monday there is a possibility that we may get the opportunity to play at another event during the day. This is going to be a pretty intensive, but hopefully enjoyable, few days and we are looking forward to staging performances which will do Peebles proud.

Cricket NewsPeebles County Cricket Club

www.peeblescountycc.hitscricket.com

Peebles County have had a difficult few weeks in the run-up to the conclusion of Division 5 in the East of Scotland Cricket Association, losing two games and winning only the one.

They got back to winning ways by disposing of Boroughmuir at home by eight wickets and then losing to Marchmont again at home by the slenderest of margins. Another defeat away to Penicuick, now established as league champions, may at the time of writing cost them dear.

First the Boroughmuir Game. County did well to reduce the visitors to 138 all out. They had beaten this team earlier in the season but due to overconfidence or complacency they were not their usual selves in the field and allowed B’Muir to put on 138. Thanks, however, to an opening stand of 78 between Murray 41 and Waddle 45,the highest this year, the result was never in doubt.

The following week they faced promotion contenders Marchmont in a second successive home game. This was the most exciting game of the season. County lost it by one wicket. In the corresponding away fixture they had been routed by ten wickets, a game from which they failed to take a single point.

County put 149 on the board. Caddick 49 and Waddle 37 were the main scorers. Marchmont seemed to be heading for an easy victory before they imploded thanks to some fine bowling and outstanding catching by County’s fielders. Losing this game was a tragedy for if they had won it, they would have assured themselves survival in the division.

Next up were eventual league winners Penicuik away from home. County lost by eight wickets. Although this result was anticipated, County emerged

from the defeat with only one bonus point. This means that the team directly below them before play, Falkland, climbed ahead of Peebles as a result of their points gained against Edin. Accies, albeit in a defeat.

Ceteris paribis, at this level of cricket, two teams are promoted two relegated. However, the uncomfortable possibility remains that in fact three teams will face the drop. Should County win in the last game of the season at home to Falkland, whom they have already beaten, then they will survive outright.

So a pall of uncertainty still hangs over PC, and it is to be hoped that the all important weather, hitherto so good to cricketers, will stay benign enough for them to finish the job.

By the time you read this, the season should have commenced for all the Club’s teams. September sees the Club’s 1stXV start their BT National League Division One campaign with matches against Kelso (H), Aberdeen Grammar (A), Biggar (H) and GHA (A). The 2ndXV meanwhile kick off the BT Reserve League East 1 on the second weekend of September against Kelso (H), followed by Murrayfield Wanderers (A) and Biggar (H).

By the first weekend in September, the Colts will already be two matches into the Border Semi Junior League season, which continues with Jed Thistle (A), Duns Colts (H), Tynedale Colts (A) and Gala Wanderers (H). Their junior counterparts, the Under 16’s start against

Kelso (H), with Melrose (A) and Berwick (H).

In last month’s issue, we touched on the pitch improvements taking place at Hay Lodge Park, and hopefully, by the time you read this, we will be back up to the park, for both training and matches. As well as improvements outside, the Club undertook a weekend’s work in conjunction with the RBS Rugby Force initiative. This involved the junior players tidying out and cleaning the pavilion in an afternoon, before the senior players moved in the following day to paint and carry out some work to form a brand new physio room and players/meeting room, which will benefit all age groups of the club. Our thanks go to RBS for their help with this.

High School matches commence on the last Saturday in August for S1’s, S2’s and Under 15’s, with an away fixture against North Berwick High before welcoming Selkirk High to the school on Saturday 6th. Matches continue against Galashiels Academy (H),

Jedburgh Grammar School (A) and Earlston High (H).

Full details of all matches at all levels, including kick off times, can be found on the Club’s website – www.peeblesrfc.org

Peebles Piranhas, the mini rugby section for boys and girls of primary school age has also started on Sunday mornings at 10am, at the Gytes. Again, similar to the rest of the Club, they will also move up to Hay Lodge Park once the pitches are ready.

Should any readers be interested in learning more about the Rugby Club and rugby for all ages in the Peebles area, please do not hesitate to contact me using any of the avenues below.
