President of Pebble Creek HOA

By Dan Logan

As the oak leaves continue to fall, we are doing our best to make sure Regents Park Drive

looks well maintained. We have asked Earthscapes to send out additional crews to help clean

up the leaves. Please do your part by raking up and bagging your leaves. We receive numerous

complaints from homeowners about neighbors who never rake their leaves, or neighbors that

just blow their leaves into the street. Earthscapes will begin to trim the oak trees on Regents

Park Drive in March. Please drive carefully, as we will have a lot of heavy equipment in our

community. While Earthscapes is in Pebble Creek, they can offer tree trimming services to

our residents. Call Earthscapes today to schedule your appointment. Residents will pay and

contract with Earthscapes directly.

A problem we continue to experience is cars and trucks parking in our common areas,

easements and parks. For example, at Country Crossings Park, we spend hundreds of dollars

a month to repair grass and replace sprinkler heads because residents drive their cars into the

park or park on the easement. We recently planted palm trees on the easement at a cost of

$4800 in order to keep cars off the easement and out of the park. Although it looks beautiful,

this was money we never wanted to spend. Please keep cars off of the grass in common areas,

easements and parks. We don’t want to have to raise dues for repairs that can be avoided!

“Ask the Board “question of the month:

Question: I live in the Estates. I drive my car to the Country Crossings Park so that my

dog can run free, and my children can use the playground. There is no parking lot. I don’t like

parking in the street. Why don’t we have a parking lot there?

Answer: The simple answer is that the developer never built a parking lot when they built

the homes in Country Crossings. I think the developer was encouraging residents to walk to the

park. Currently, the board feels that a parking lot would be a huge expense, and we are not

even sure that the county would permit it. If you need to drive your car to a park, we have a

parking lot and a beautiful park behind the community center and by the tennis courts. If you

want to use the Country Crossings Park, please walk there or ride a bike.

Teddy the Turtle

Meet Teddy the Turtle. We adopted Teddy from family friends who thought he was not going to live much longer since he didn't seem to eat and never moved around. We bought a heat lamp and changed his diet from turtle pellets to freeze dried bugs and lettuce. We are happy to say that Teddy is basking in the light and swims around happily. If he keeps growing he will be upgrading his turtle condo to a turtle mansion!

Landscape Committee

March House of the Month 18719 Forest Glen Court (Pebble Creek)

PLURIS NEWS:By Dan Logan As you know, PLURIS has raised their water rates dramatically in Pebble Creek. A hearing will be held downtown so that residents can express their concern. As of right now, we don’t have a date set for the hearing. We are encouraging all homeowners to attend the hearing. Most likely, we will rent a bus, so that we can get homeowners downtown more effectively. Look for news on the Pebble Creek website, the community bulletin boards and at board meetings. Also, if you have any quality issues with PLURIS, we are asking that you go to the Florida State Utility website and log your complaint. If you have issues with billing, quality, smell coming from the wastewater treatment station, etc. please go to:

Website: www.floridapsc.comEmail: [email protected]

Phone: (800)342-3552 When considering rate hikes, the county looks at overall service from the supplier to justify the increase. In the last two years, we have had maybe 5-10 complaints. I have heard way more complaints than that. Don’t call Tina at our community center, or Angela at UPI. Go to the website to complain … that is the official state record center. PLURIS must respond if you go to that website and complain.v

The Landscape Committe met on January 22nd and reviewed plans for the coming year. The committee is inspecting sub-division entrances to determine what additional fixes/improvements are necessary. Input from homeowners is desired. Plans were made to finalize replanting and improvement of the Club View entrance. Yet to be examined are the primary entrances to the community for improvements. The plans developed by the Landscape Committee are reviewed by the Board of Directors, cost estimated, approved and then executed. There are a number of common areas that will be reviewed for future improvement. Again, input from homeowers is requested. Planting has been accomplished at Country Crossings - trees and bushes, along the right of way to restrict street parking which was becoming a hazard. v

NOTE: If you do not have a computer you can call (888) 258-2253

Now back to our story – I entered Pebble Creek Homeowners Association in the name search and found 3 different claims (total of $1,344.72). Our management company, UPI, has completed the required claim form and we will receive our check within 90 days.Good luck! Please let Tina know if you strike it rich.

If you encounter an alligator that is acting hostile you can report it to the county wildlife control office. Whatever you do, DO NOT FEED THE ALLIGATORS. It is against Florida Law

to do so, and will encourage the reptiles to become less afraid of humans!

ROTARACT CLUB

Rotaract is a Rotary-sponsored service club for dedicated volunteers ages 18 to 30, who want to make the world a better place. Their goals are self development and fellowship through service. They strive to better our local and international communities while growing as leaders and young

professionals. They meet the first Wednesday at The Green Lemon on South Howard and the third Wednesday at Avalon Heights at 7:30 pm. Rotaract is a global network of young people who are changing the world with clubs in over 160 countries. Their recent volunteer events have included:Sweetwater organic Farms: They recently helped Sweetwater Organic Farms, a community-supported urban organic farm and environmental education center, harvest and wash vegetables in order to distribute them to members of the farm and promote organic and sustainable farming. Feeding America: They went to the Feeding America warehouse in south Tampa, along with the Rotary Club of New Tampa Evening, in order to sort and pack donated food. Gasparilla 5K:

They volunteered at the 5K to distribute water to the participants during and after the event.Mud Run, Benefiting the humane Society: Rotaract members assisted at the obstacle course-style marathon. They have chosen to focus on animal welfare as their main focus of service this year.Peace River Refuge: On the topic of animal welfare, they are currently planning a day trip to Silver Springs where they can help the Peace River Refuge Forest Animal Rescue build its sanctuary. The sanctuary is in the midst of a relocation and they have contacted the owners to discuss the Tampa Rotaract Club helping build habitats for the various animals they care for like wolves, bears, primates, etc. Their Social events have included:A pancake party: Last month they had a pancake

party, where members brought different toppings and they all made their "ideal" pancakes by mixing and matching the toppings into the batter. It was a lot of fun, despite the mess!Bowling: Members went bowling (after volunteering at Feeding America) in order to promote the fellowship within their club, and show off their bowling skills, or lack thereof. Anyone who is interested in attending meetings or events please contact the club via email at [email protected], or call Richard Crouse at 386-336-6348. Or you can "like" the club's facebook page and inquire though that. v

Pebble Creek's Feral Cats Also known as a “community” cats, feral cats are born and raised in the wild, or have been abandoned or lost and reverted to wild ways in order to survive. Feral cats have been living outdoors alongside humans for more than 10,000 years. While some feral cats tolerate a bit of human contact, most are not socialized to people. Feral cats typically live in groups called colonies and have strong social bonds with their colony members. Feral cats make their home wherever they find shelter and a food source, usually near humans. There are an estimated 200,000 feral cats in Hillsborough County. Feral cats are a domesticated species and, therefore, are protected under the state’s anti-cruelty laws. Since Pebble Creek is finding these cats to be quite a problem, here are some tips on coexisting with feral cats. Essentially, feral cats belong to the community and it’s the community’s responsibility to ensure their care. Because feral cats are not socialized and not adoptable, they do not belong in animal pounds or shelters where virtually 100% of them are killed. Instead, feral cats should be humanely trapped, neutered, vaccinated and returned (TNVR) to their outdoor home. Learn more about TNVR at the Hillsborough Humane Society and why it is the most effective, economical and humane means of community cat population control. Although feral cats do not pose a danger to humans or the community, it is understandable that many Pebble Creek residents do not enjoy having them in their yards. There are simple things you can do to deter cats from taking up residence on your property.• Place a tight lid on your trash can.• Apply cat repellent fragrances in any areas where you wish to deter cats.• Scatter natural deterrents such as fresh orange/lemon peels, citrus sprayscoffee grounds, vinegar, pipe tobacco, oil of lavender, lemongrass, citronella, eucalyptus.• Physically block or seal the location the cats are entering with chickenwire or lattice once you are certain there are no cats or kittens inside. The Humane Society of Tampa Bay is committed to the well-being of feral cats Each Monday our clinic spays, neuters and vaccinates dozens of feral cats for the low cost of $15. If you trap a feral cat, please bring it to us to spay or neuter. This will help the Pebble Creek community. v

Toilets About 75 percent of the water used inside a home is used in the bathroom. Half of that is used by the toilet. Frequently a toilet can leak silently, wasting hundreds of gallons per month. The main culprit for leaks is the flapper or stop valve at the bottom of the tank. If it fails, water constantly seeps into the bowl. You can test to see if the flapper is not working properly by adding a few drops of colored food dye into the tank. Wait about 15 minutes. If color shows up in the bowl, then the flapper is leaking and should be replaced. Please be sure to get the correct flapper for your particular toilet

model. After the test, flush the toilet to prevent the dye from staining your fixture. According to statistics, it is estimated that a toilet is flushed 20 times a day by a family of four. If you don't already have an ultra-low-flow toilet, that would be a wise first step to conserving. Older models use 3.5, 5 or 7 gallons per flush. The savings will depend on which model you have. Maybe you have heard those horror stories of having to double flush each time with a low-flow toilet. Admittedly, early attempts at making low-flow toilets were dismal and resulted in repeated flushing by frustrated customers and a bad

reputation. Newer models have largely overcome these and use only 1.6 gallons per flush.

Bathtubs The average bathtub will hold 40 to 60 gallons completely filled. You can save 20 gallons by bathing in a half-filled tub.

Showers Showering accounts for about 20 percent of the water used in the home. Taking a shorter shower can save 3 to 6 gallons for each minute. By reducing shower time by 5 minute you could save 15 to 30 gallons each time. If you install a new showerhead

(maximum 2.5 gallons per minute flow rate) you will save water and still have an enjoyable shower. You can also add a temporary shut-off device at the showerhead to further reduce the flow while lathering. Showerheads are available to Hillsborough County Public Utilities Department customers at no cost by contacting customer service at 272-6680.

Sinks Turn it off. The chief source of waste at a sink is from turning it on and leaving it running while brushing teeth or shaving. Installing a low flow aerator may cut the flow by 5 gallons a minute, which will add up quickly. Free aerators are also available from customer service at 272-6680. v

Whether it was the increased hours of operation for adoptions, continued support from rescue groups and the Humane Society of Tampa Bay, or all the special adoption promotions, Hillsborough County Animal Services had more animals leave the shelter alive in

December 2012 than any one month, ever. In total, 772 animals found forever homes with adoptive families or rescue groups in December. That equates to 71 percent of all dogs and 37 percent of all cats. This compares to only 53 percent of dogs and 22 percent of cats leaving the shelter alive in

"We still have a long way to go to reach our goals, and we can't get there overnight,” said Ian Hallett, the new Hillsborough County Animal Services Director. “But it shows that we are on the right path and that the public supports us." Hallett’s main goal to
