PDHPE IS IMPORTANT

• PDHPE is very important in primary schools as it provides opportunities for the education of students to adopt lifelong healthy, active living.

• It is one of the six key learning areas in the NSW primary curriculum.

• Movement is central in PDHPE. However, it does provide a balance between movement-related and health-related skills, knowledge and understanding. This enables student to develop physically and mentally within the subject.

• The PDHPE curriculum provides flexibility to present information, understanding and skills in a way that meets students’ diverse cognitive, physical, emotional and social development attributes.

Why?

• PDHPE will ultimately affect a students performance, not only in other subjects at school, but also their life and attitude outside of school.

• PDHPE provides opportunities for applying, integrating and extending knowledge and learning from a range of earning ideas. It is not limited to just one individual subject. This enables students to transfer knowledge and make and apply decisions in a range of health and movement related experiences.

• In order to influence students and their behaviour, in regards to healthy eating, nutrition and physical fitness, it is important to provide students with the opportunity to learn about the benefits and provide them with the information they need to understand healthy choices.

• It allows students to refine their understanding and skills in relation to body movement and other objects and people.

How?• When the key concepts of PHDPE are appropriately

represented, students are capable of developing their own understanding and ability to understand more complex concepts. This is not only limited to understanding PDHPE.

• Students are taught everything that they need to know about their own personal development, safety, personal health and care, relationships and how to improve their communication and interactive skills.

• Students are encouraged to creatively sequence a range of different movement skills, enabling them to expand their understanding of movement skills and they are encouraged to learn about safety considerations and the benefits of physical fitness.

• Through these strategies, students are able to identify activities that meet their needs, interests and fitness and skill levels.

Learning

• PE offers experiential learning to students.

• Through this way of learning, students are capable of engaging in a contemporary and physically active environment that is enjoyable and developmentally appropriate.

• PDH promotes healthy, active living.

• It is a fundamental part in developing a students’ knowledge and understanding of sense of self, health literacy competencies and to build and maintain satisfying relationships.
