Do you remember your first autocross? The excitement as you prepared the day before, the lack of sleep the night before, and waking up early to double check that you have everything you need. I remember my early events many years ago. My car wasn’t ready yet, but I could hardly wait to partici-pate. The car was running, although looking rough. The body work had not been started. That was going to be anoth-er large and time con-suming project. I had decided to put very wide 930 turbo flares on my 914 body. At this rate it seemed like I would never make it out to an event. With the sheet metal cut out to allow room for the 285 wide tires to stick out the side, I decided to go to an autocross. I was greeted with many strange looks, and for good reason. It looked odd. Every-one was very polite and friendly. I just kept saying, it’s not done yet. The day my Porsche came to a Roadrun-ner event with her new body and paint was a happy one. I still get excited when a fun autocross event is on the calendar. July’s autocross starts the last half of this year’s competitive driving events. There are only 6 more autocrosses left for the year. Take a look at the 2013 points list to see how the Die Series is

stacking up. It’s not too late to add points to your score. Now that everyone has had a chance to sharpen their driving skills and work on their car, we will have July’s autocross at Napa Speedway on the 20th. This is always a very fun track experi-ence while combining the precision of an autocross. Contact Autocross Chairperson, Lee Stauffacher for more information. Before our autocross, come see a track car build on the 13th. Pat Ferrell will be giving his up-dated Tech Session for 2013. Pat is doing a meticu-lous build of a 914 race car. This will be the third year for this tech session. This will be a very spe-cial car when it is finished, come out and see what goes into a build of this magnitude. This event has everything – welding, fit & finish, body modifications, suspension, motor, wheel fitment, and much more. Learn what goes into doing a complete rebuild and modification of a Porsche.

Good friends and good food will be a great finish to this month’s events. We can all get to-gether to discuss the Tech Session, and the Autocross Die Series on the 27th at The Standard Diner for Dennis Cham-berlain’s ever popular Meet & Greet gathering. Start marking your calendars for August. It’s going to be a very busy month full of more events.

Contact Russ Kelso with PMCI for additional in-formation on the Deutschmarque Classic event at Napa Speedway. This is great event every year. If you’re not driving, it is still fun to watch. As I’ve mentioned many times, stay tuned for updates as the year continues. Hope to see you at an event soon.

For the past two years Pat has given us an interesting look into his 914 car build, as well as a primer on welding for the begin-ner. He follows that up again this year with another update on the project, including the decision making process for modifica-tions, the budget impacts, and the overall planning for a car build. This should be a fascinating discussion with plenty of time for Q & A. Plus, the 914 will either be on the rotisserie or on a dolly for paint and reassembly, allowing an up close look at this ground-up restoration. `This year’s Fiesta was a huge success and everyone had a great time! Even the weather cooperated! With registrants and co-registrants, over180 people gathered in Santa Fe for 3 and a 1/2 days of fun, competition, driving tours, and socials. We were honored this year to have Pa-rade MC, Mark Shevitz, join us and I’ll talk about his trip later in this article. Jo Martin and I co-chaired Fiesta and we worked very hard for about a year, organizing and planning everything – and we were very pleased with the results! La Fonda Hotel was our host hotel and I think they did a wonderful job of accommodat-ing us, while going through a major renovation! I joked to a couple of people that we set out to find a hotel that was being renovated, to stay with the tradition since last year’s Fiesta was centered at the Hilton. Registration/Check-in was fun and lively and everyone walked away with valuable Goody bags, posters, umbrellas and rain ponchos (complements of Michelin), and their packets. We had a huge contingent from Idaho, plus we were honored to have long-time PCAers, Fran and Bill Walker, and Alice Worrell. On to the Welcome Party! The room with the nicest views is La Terraza on the 2nd floor of La Fonda, and the patio overlooks the St. Francis

Cathedral. Registrants gathered together for light appetizers and drinks and went over their Fiesta plans with friends. We were also treated to some nice music from El Farol’s Nacha Mendez. For the Concours there were about 80 cars parked on the 4 streets that surround the plaza and it was truly a sight to see, with all of the shiny cars under the cottonwoods. There were 6 classes and the full results have been posted to the Fiesta website. Santa Fe resident, Tom Linton, took top honors with his beautifully restored 1973 Olive Green 911 T. Doug Brosveen did an excellent job of organizing and running the concours and we cannot thank him enough! Friday afternoon, there were 3 driving tours and people who were not signed up for tours took advantage of the nice weather to play tourist in Santa Fe, or go along on the Walking Tour of downtown Santa Fe. Like last year, we held the autocross at a parking lot behind the Chevy dealership on the south part of town. At the end of the day, the dynamic duo of Melanie and Paul Dodd achieved Top Time of The Day for women and men. Lots of fun had by all, and it was nice to chalk up another successful Fiesta autocross! Also like last year, the Roadrunner Region made a donation to the

Chevy dealership’s charity of choice: Big Broth-ers/Big Sisters of Northern New Mexico. Good job, Brian Leduc, Fiesta Autocross Chair! You rock!! Almost all of the Saturday and Sunday driving tours were full and from what I heard, they all went very well. It’s always nice to see the beautiful scenery of the high desert, and to experience it with lines of beautiful Porsches! Terry Morgan did an excellent job of working with the other 9 tour leaders to offer such a variety of tours to the Fiesta registrants. Sunday morning was Fiesta rally morning and we were thrilled to bring back another Fiesta tradition – a Time/Speed/Distance rally. Dianne and Scott Wilburn worked very hard all spring to organize the rally and I think every-one had a great time. Louanne and Wally Sargent finished with the best score and all of the results have been posted to the Fiesta website. Jo and I spent the afternoon getting things ready for the Awards Banquet. We de-cided to do things a little differently this year, and we copied something from Parade. We placed grab bags at each table and each of the dinner attendees shared the goodies, which consisted of Porsche leather key chains, valve stem caps, lanyards, Hot Wheels, and other little prizes. For the bigger prize drawings, we had a Porsche Design suitcase, lots of beautiful items from Nambeware, lots of Porsche Design items, and lots of other prizes that had been donated: a set of tires (yes!!), oil changes, framed prints, magazine subscriptions, a spa gift certificate – you name it! Even though not everyone received

a big prize, everyone went away with some type of prize. Getting back to the name of the banquet – trophies were handed out for the competitive events of the long weekend. It’s always nice to applaud the accomplishments of our fellow com-petitors, and sometimes pick up a piece of hard-ware in the process! First-time competitor, Marc Martin, won a nice wristwatch from Butterfield’s, for winning the Ashley Carroll award. Long-time competitor (and VERY long-time Fiesta attendee), Diana Pool, claimed the Ashley Carroll award in the women’s division. In between door prizes and trophies, Mark Shevitz showed lots of pictures from his experiences at Porsche Parades, and he shared interesting stories of many of the people he’s met throughout his years with PCA. He is truly a lucky

person! I’ve been privileged to hear Mark talk at many Parades and for Fiesta, he put in lots of time and effort to create a very interest-ing presentation. What was that about Marc Martin kissing Mark She-vitz on the head?? Must have been a Canadian tradi-tion! Well, all good things must end and with the conclusion of the

banquet came the end of Fiesta 2013. The entire Fiesta team should take credit in mission accom-plished: to provide Roadrunners and our special guests from outside of New Mexico with a fun, Porsche-filled extra long weekend in Santa Fe. Old friendships were renewed, new friendships were made, and promises were also made to get together for future PCA events.

Parade MC Mark Shevitz shares his stories with the crowd

A bevy of Porsches outside one of the Fiesta drive-out venues

May 26th saw the annual running of the Fiesta New Mexico Autocross and while not trying to give away the ending in the first sentence, for those in attendance it was clearly a “Dodd, Dodd, World”. But, more about that later. Twenty of the approximately twenty six drivers that registered for the autocross arrived Saturday morning to find a short, highly techni-cal course laid out in a lot adjacent to Sante Fe Chevrolet/Cadillac. While derived from last years course, detail changes to key sections yielded a time that was about 5 seconds faster than last year’s layout. From the perspective of your author, entering a corner with just a bit too much speed, or venturing off line by a fraction resulted in a significant loss of time. For a short course, I found it challenging to turn consistently good laps. Although we continued to use the PCA’s Small Region Class structure for Fiesta autocross awards in an effort to reduce one car classes, the net result was still only four out of fourteen con-

tested classes. While that was less than hoped for, competition remained keen. IO1M was tied with SS01M for the great-est number of drivers in class, with three each. In Improved, Scott Wilburn took the win with a time of 27.023. On the Showroom Stock side, Rod Nordstrom piloting a very nice 964 C4 took home the hardware with a time of 28.045. As for the comment about it being a “Dodd, Dodd, World”, we need to have a look at the fight for this year’s men’s and women’s FTD awards. Starting with the Lisa Thomas Woman’s FTD award, Melanie Dodd, piloting the family 993 C4S, clocked a spectacular time of 26.942, hand-ily wresting the title from perennial women’s FTD winner Liz Shaw, and by almost a full second to boot. To put Melanie’s time in the proper per-ceptive, it was good enough for seventh fastest overall. I believe some man cards will soon need to be suspended. Over on the men’s side, things were

considerable tighter, as competition for the cov-eted Russ Kelso FTD Trophy was fierce with five drivers having a shot at the title. Michael Gala-viz, James Wilson, Tom Reynolds, your humble scribe, and Paul Dodd posted times in the 51 second range that were covered by a scant 0.665 seconds. Here is how it broke down:• The margin from 5th to 4th was 0.435

seconds (Michael Galaviz, 5th place)• Fourth to third; 0.150 seconds (James

Wilson, 4th place)• Third to second: 0.047 seconds (Tom

Reynolds, in Liz Shaw’s Cayman S, 3rd place on less than fresh street tires, no less!)

• Second to first: 0.033 seconds (Brian Leduc, your author, 2nd place)

By now, you can guess that Paul Dodd took the top slot with a time of 51.133. Well done! While they were unable to attend, much hardware and accolades were bestowed upon the family Dodd at the Fiesta Awards Banquet. As always, there are many to thank for helping make the Fiesta Autocross a success, starting with Kirk Mauer of Mauer’s collision who generously sponsored all of the Fiesta Trophies, including the autocross awards.

Of course, big thanks to Liz Shaw and Jo Martin, who, in addition to being Fiesta Chairs, also helped out with numerous event details without which the event could not have hap-pened. Next a shout out to Russ Kelso and David Porteus who stepped up at the 11th hour (almost literally) to haul the autocross trailer from Albu-querque to Sante Fe and back, and a nod to Marc Martin for breakfast burritos and coffee. As for the timing crew, kudos to Paul Dodd and Tom Reynolds who both volunteered to run timing in spite of the fact that neither was initially going to be able to attend Fiesta. And lest I forget, big thanks to the follow-ing non-driving attendees that graciously offered to spend part or all of a day in a hot, dusty park-ing lot, or otherwise helped with event coordina-tion; Doug Brosveen, Don Becker, Sam Shaw, Bob Tokar, Larry and Thomas Kwei, Amanda Torbett, Lori Leduc, and Dom Cagliostro. And lastly, many thanks to the kind folks at Sante Fe Chevrolet and Cadillac for again offering the use of their lot. See you all in 2014!

My husband Scott and I coordinated the Poker Rally for Fiesta 2012. This year, by popu-lar demand, a TSD (time-speed-distance) rally was on the agenda. So, not knowing what we were doing, we agreed to coordinate another rally. Famous last words, “What could possibly go wrong?” Jo Martin and Liz Shaw gave us a book and we researched rally rules on the web. We took the Porsche Parade TSD Rally Rules, which were very detailed, and started with that as our template. First I edited those rules taking out things I didn’t see we needed in our rally. For example, we wouldn’t have enough people par-ticipating to have 4 classes based on what type of equipment people had with them. But, I kept things like no GPS gadgets. Then Scott read the rules for an edit and we sent that out to the volun-teers for a review. Next came preparing the route. I used Google Maps to try to keep the rally to around 2 hours for a perfect time. We wanted a rally on Sunday morning with enough time left for people to make afternoon tours. At first I tried to

do something like go by all the major churches in Santa Fe, but that didn’t seem to take enough time and didn’t have any long stretches of just driving. I then took a different approach and started thinking about parking lots in Santa Fe and where we could have check points. I would have liked for people to have gone from Eldorado to Edgewood, one of my favorite roads, but that would have taken too long. So, I did a route that went from downtown Santa Fe, to Eldorado, back to the northern part of Santa Fe, then back out to I-25, then back into town on Cerillos, back out to I-25, to the 599 bypass, then back into town and ending at the DeVargas Mall. Scott and I rode the route twice. The first time he drove and I wrote the directions. Since I am HORRIBLE at telling my left from my right, that was my worse fear on the instructions. The second time we drove it on a Sunday morning so we would be in similar traffic to the rally partici-pants. So, we then took my directions, his direc-tions, and created the instructions for the partici-pants. Things we learned to improve for next

time was to have more contact with the volun-teers before the race about rules, where to meet, etc. We couldn’t have done it without their help! We also should have driven the course a third time with someone who wasn’t going to partici-pate. So, we did our best! Here are the results:

The annual new members party is always a hit, and this year was no exception due mostly to the thorough planning, organization, and ac-commodations of hosts Paul and Yvonne Teske. Due to space limitations Paul had asked that we limit the attendance to 42, but it turned out to be 48 with just a couple of last minute callers having to be turned away. The weather, as always, was a little warm. We might consider moving it up a month or back a few months for the future. But the umbrella/tent arrangement that Paul and Yvonne provided worked well. The menu of barbecue and related accompaniments hit the spot, and everyone seemed to be in a festive mood. The car show was a hit, too. There were lots of great looking Porsches, with the annual award for “best of show” going to Bill and Suzy Kaltenbach for their 1960 356B T5 Roadster. This was the first year for the Roadster, which

replaced the one year only 1959 Convertible D and continued in production until 1962. The roll up windows and higher windscreen made for a more comfortable ride than the Speedster. The top still only had one fabric layer, unlike the Cabriolet which had a padded top and was much quieter. These Roadsters are worth almost five times their original cost now. (By the way, these details were provided by Porsche whiz Bob Blackwell). The Kaltenbachs win a mounted 16 x 20 photograph of their car, to be taken at a location of their choosing. All in all, it was a great event. Thanks again to Paul and Yvonne Teske! Here’s hoping they sign on to do it for another five years……..

Die Serie #6 at Rte 66 Casino was, as usual, a great event, with an excellent turnout. The event organizers arrived early to set up the cookie cutter course and had a sudden epiph-any…”A different course = more fun”, so Tom Reynolds set out on the spot to put together a new course. This new course quickly filled the smallish parking lot, taking the shape of a figure 8 that presented a challenge to the drivers and created a sense of newness at the often used location. By 9 am the course was completed, the drivers met to discuss the events, and the sun began its relentless radiating of the site. Little did we know how relentless the sun would be this day…. The drivers started out hot, and got out even hotter before we broke for lunch, the newly paved parking lot shimmered with heat as it absorbed the remorseless heat of the sun. By 11 the first run group had finished and lunch was a welcome opportunity to escape the heat and re-treat to the air-conditioned Rte 66 Buffet to enjoy some excellent food. After lunch the group returned to the park-ing lot to resume the day’s activities and sacrifice a few more quarts of sweat to whichever deity reigns over autocrosses. It was during the latter half of this session that Michael Courtney discov-ered how hot it really was. As Michael began his third run, the red flag came out and the corner workers halted him in the middle of the course. “His tire is coming apart” came the call on the ra-dio. So off the course Michael went to inspect his faulty tire. Well, it turned out that Michael hadn’t driven the tires off the car. He actually drove the surface off the road. He had no less than 5 lbs of the sealant from the newly resurfaced parking lot adhering to his tire. To make a long story short, he managed to remove the sealant and complete his final 3 runs before the group completed its runs. By the end of the day, which thankfully

was around 2 pm, everybody was ready to go. Steve Fallon had posted FTD for the Porsche club, and there were no more massive amounts of silent adhering to the tires of the cars. Thanks to everyone for a great turnout and fun event. And Thanks to Mike Galavize for bringing out the gear, and Tom for coming out to help set up and designing a new course on such short notice. See you all out at Napa Speedway next month for the July Autocross. It’ll be lots of fun, but bring your sun umbrellas if you’ve got them.

Hi all! Even though this report is for July, I’m writing it in early June. Just a week has passed since Fiesta New Mexico 2013 concluded a fun, long weekend. The whole weekend was spectacular and the Roadrunner Region was thrilled to welcome everyone to Santa Fe. Things got started on Thurs-day afternoon, with Registration/Check-in, and then nearly ev-eryone gathered in La Terraza for appetizers and drinks. Bright and early Friday morning, we began staging cars around the downtown plaza for the upcoming Concours. It sure was beautiful to see all of the Porsches parked around the plaza. The downtown merchants and tourists appreci-ated the sight, also! We had 6 classes for judging, and lots of other cars for display-only. I was busy running back and forth to La Fonda, getting registration packets for those who were not able to pick up their stuff the day before. Saturday, as per tradition, we had an auto-cross and, like last year, we were able to hold the event in Santa Fe. The Chevy dealership in Santa Fe has been very good to us and they allow us to use an extra lot of theirs, at no cost (although we make a donation to their favorite charity). We had 20 drivers and the dynamic duo, Melanie and Paul

Dodd, achieved Top Time of the Day in their respec-tive divisions. I capped the late afternoon with a docent-led tour of ghostly locations in downtown Santa Fe. I’m not kidding – we learned of the best spots to see ghosts! Having grown up in Santa Fe, I was aware that there were ghosts in La Fonda and some other locations, but I had no idea that there was a whole population of them! On Sunday morning, lots of teams queued up to leave for the Time Speed Distance Rally and everyone looked like they were ready for an adven-ture! Jo Martin (Fiesta Co-Chair) and I got some much-needed coffee and then began preparing things for that evening’s Awards Banquet. Mark Shevitz, Parade MC extraordinaire, gave an interesting talk on his experiences and the people he’s met during his years with Parade. Jo

and I handed out lots of door prizes, which included several items from Porsche Design, art work from club members, and other donations. And not to forget since it’s one of the main reasons for the banquet, trophies were also handed out, with Marc Martin and Diana Pool winning the Ashley Carroll award for top combined score in the concours, auto-cross, and rally.

Needless to say, by Monday afternoon, I could not stay awake any longer and I took a well-deserved 4-hour nap! Zone 9 Regions were also busy in May, with tech sessions, autocrosses, DE’s, and a poker rally. And there’s more to come all summer! By this time next month, I’ll have a Parade report, and I’ll be able to report on some Region events.

Happy summer driving!
