Behind the WheelSteven StacyRegion President

I just returned from a long weekend at the 36th Rolex Monterey Historic Automobile Races at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca and the 59th Pebble Beach Con-cours d’Elegance. You have heard it said that few things in life are better than turning your passion into your ca-reer and this was the place to enjoy those doing so……! Mazda Laguna Seca Raceway: I imagined myself as one of the race cars that lay awake at nights at the track at Laguna Seca, imagining the next days race that lay before me and the dreams come true for the cars, drivers and diehard fans. The 3 days of wheel to wheel racing around this historic road course by roughly 450 vintage cars brought a chance to get close to them in the open paddock where you got to see the likes many famous racecar drivers of the past: Vic Elford, Jurgen Barth, Brian Redman, Derek Bell, David Donohue, Ster-ling Moss, and Hurley Haywood. This year the featured marque was Porsche. The Panameras were all over the place, both at Laguna Seca as the pace cars, giving rides to people around the coun-try side, and at Pebble Beach. Porsche brought over from Germany many spectacular cars, and there were all the numbers there from the No.1- 356 to the 550s, 904s, 962s, 908s and 911s, 914-6s to Carreras. The 917s took the win between the Ferraris and Porsche race this year. You can not understand this racetrack event until to hear the roars of the racers going by you. Taking the steep hike up to the Corkscrew turn at the top of the track is a must to see the cars make the 5 story drop like speed slalom ski racers. There were many other cars as well that partici-pated and pointed out by my expert car identifier friend that I shared the trip with- Steve Fallon. He was able at a glance to identify the many other antique cars that most of us have never seen: Alfa Romeos (what I like to call Alfred Romeros), Allards, Devins, Elvas, Aardvarks, Scarabs, etc. Steve Fallon’s involvement at the tracks for the past 50 years makes him an excellent car spotter!!!

Pebble Beach: Slightly overcast skies made it com-fortably cool and then the sunshine appeared at noon to brighten our pictures of the world’s most exclusive temporary museum of classic car fanatics. This invita-tion only event draws cars that come in from all over the world. There was no economic downturn in the numbers of cars this year, and the top sale of 7.25 million dollars for the championship 1965 Shelby Daytona Cobra broke a record at the Mecum Monterey Auction. There was the first annual Concours d’Lemons held for the first time as an “auto underclass” response to the glitzy Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, held on the dirt lots of Toro Park on the outskirts of Monterey. It was comprised of 90 automobile eyesores from Pac-ers to Pintos. The trophy for the “Worst in Show” award went to a 1980 mini Vl- the French micro-car with a two cylinder engine that uses friction to power itself by rub-bing two rollers against the back wheels. Being exempt in France as a car, it served those that could not obtain a French driver’s license. Thanks again to all our participating members and volunteers that make our club a great one!

Roadrunner Region veterans all know about the annual Chili Cook Off in the fall of every year, but we have quite a few new members who have yet to be initiated into our club ritual!

This year’s event is once again hosted by Bruce Phillips at his wonderful home in High Desert (for the newbies, just a look around the garage is worth it!). The date is Saturday, October 10, 2009...mark your calendars!

The Chili Cook Off is a “pot luck” type of event where everyone brings a dish that includes chili of some type. In the past, we have seen some pretty wacky, yet edible, chili dishes and we expect this year to be just as crazy. Prizes are awarded for the hottest, cheesiest and most creative, just to name a few The prizes will be unique and surprising! Look for food categories and directions in the October issue.

If you are a recent addition to the club, this is a great opportunity to meet fellow Porsche enthusiasts in a fun, casual and social setting. We hope you will join us! For more information, call Bruce at 505-344-0000 or write [email protected]

Keep your eyes peeled for more news about the Chili Cook Off in the next newsletter!

Now’s the time to get in Roadrunner style! We have several items featuring the custom-embroidered Roadrunner logo: polo shirts, denim shirts, twills, and fleece vests. Prices for these items range from $25 for the polo shirts to $35 for the fleece vests.

If you want to lighten up on the layering and just go for a sweatshirt, we have 3 styles to choose from: 1/4-zip black sweatshirts with the Porsche script in small lettering over the left breast, or in larger, out-line lettering across the chest; sweatshirts with the large Porsche crest; or sweatshirts with the Porsche script in outline lettering across the chest. All of the sweatshirts are priced at $30 each.

We are also featuring pins for you and badges for your car. You can order the Roadrunner pin by itself, or order a name badge with the pin on it. The pins are $5 each and the name badges are $10 each. Car badges are $25 each.

And for those wintry days when you don’t want to drive your Porsche in the white, fluffy stuff, pull up a chair by the fire and open up a great book. There’s Fred Puhn’s “How to Make Your Car Handle” and Stephan Wilkinson’s “The Gold-Plated Porsche”.

Results from Porsche+Audi ChallengeSandia Motorsports Park

Sunday, July 26, 2009DS#5: Porsche+Audi Challenge Autocross

It’s a tribute to the competitiveness amongst Roadrunner autocrossers that eight (yes EIGHT) trophies were taken at this year’s Parade by drivers from the “little region that does.” Nonetheless, it was a remarkable day that showed Porsches dominant over Audis, Corvettes, various Lancer Evos and Subaru STis and other very fast cars at DS#5: the Porsche+Audi Challenge at Sandia Motorsport Park in late July. There was a huge turnout for the event -- 49 cars -- sponsored by Kirk Maurer and Stephen Bauer. Everyone was excited to drive at Sandia on a longer course and Kirk promised it would be fast and challenging. No one was disappointed. Howard Voges (who has a 914 some-where...) drove his kart to fastest time. No surprises there. But Kirk Maurer was only a few seconds behind and the field was tightly packed. Steve Fallon was the next fastest of the “real” cars with Sean Cridland just a hair behind him. The always fast Brian Leduc was up next with the re-emergent Pat Ferrell going fast again with his lightweight 914. Telling of how fast the Porsche were going on this

wide-open course was that the fastest of the power-ful Corvettes was almost 5 seconds off of Maurer’s yellow and black 996 turbo. Doug Brosveen (who recently divested himself of the legendary Red Devil 928) was the fastest of the Audi drivers about a half an hour back (are you reading, Doug?). But we hear that he’s looking for a Cayman S to fulfill his need for true quality in driving machines and to make up some of that time. Among those who came out after long absences was the always fast Bob Tokar, Chuck Hanson (who seems to always be driving something different), and Richard Hanna, who found himself running with the wipers on because it started to rain during his run! Club president Steven Stacy drove his Cayenne Turbo S with great gusto and showed what a 500+ hp 4wd mall-wagon will do on a good course. Dana Dingham brought his beautiful 73 911T for a run. Of course many of the usual sus-pects were on hand for the day. It was a great event and word has it that the Audi guys are re-arming themselves for a stronger bid next year. Might we see an R8 on track?

The pavement was almost as hot as the chili-cheesburgers being served inside at the Calvary Chapel on August 8 in Belen, during what has been an uncommonly hot summer. Hence, some of the afternoon runners had to cope with “greasy” tires and heat-induced lethargy. Nonetheless, there’s not too many things more fun that pushing a Porsche through its paces. There was a good crowd of enthusiastic autocrossers on hand. Dennis Ledbetter managed to design a new layout for the small, but friendly lot that challenged everyone’s skills and got everyone working hard. Tom Reynolds was there with his kart and, of course ,was fastest. But then it was Paul Dodd showing great skill in his well turned-out Porsche 993. Small cars like Miatas and S2000s usually do well in the small Belen lot and that was true again with Troy Romenesho and Jim Garton stealing the next spots before Brian Leduc, Sean Cridland, and Steve Fallon came in with their Porsches. Joe Almers was again very fast with his 356, which seems to be increasingly well sorted. Ste-phen Bauer, who has been attending many DE events in Colorado this summer, brought his JCW Mini and showed that his driving skills are increasing by leaps and bounds this season. Scott Mackie is driving very

well and shows great potential. All the other competi-tors watch carefully when he shows up to make sure that he hasn’t found a set of Kumhos or Hoosiers yet.... Lee Stauffacher and Michael Galaviz led the 914 contingent, with Lee’s dad Lee jr taking a crack behind the wheel and doing quite well for his first time. Missus Stauffacher drove the 914 too and did quite well with it too! The always large and competitive Boxster contingent was on hand again for their friendly but intense competition. Benny de la Cruz once again showed his skills by leading that contingent, which included Bill Guyre, Bill Oaks, Judy Harger, and R Dayhoff. John Clark is coming to grips nicely with his yellow 911. Liz Shaw led the women’s race, but only just barely over Judy Harger who seems to be benefit-ting from some expert coaching from Mr. de la Cruz. Also on hand were the father and son team of Scott and Grey Wilburn. Scott is trying his best to enjoy his limited time of being faster, but is resigned to future in-evitabilities. James Hume is looking increasing sporty in his 911 and says his is looking for ways to go faster, faster, faster....

Nuts and Volts by William Agnew

The Ramblings deadline’s this afternoon, but I’m here at Pebble Beach, taking in a weekend packed with automotive fun. Since I arrived here in Monterey at noon on Friday, after an across the desert blast in my 993, which incidentally didn’t overheat as it climbed the grade west of Needles where the temperature was 115, it’s been cars, cars, cars. First I went to the Concorso Italiano, a car show full of (mainly) red cars. Then I spent a full day Saturday at the Monterey Historic Races. Last night I took in the high buck Goodings Auction, where most cars didn’t seem to sell, and

those that did usually went for well below the estimated price. This morning I’ve been out at the Pebble Beach Concours, an event full of eye poppingly restored cars, just ducking out now to put together this story. The featured marque this weekend is Porsche, and our favorite cars are everywhere.

(The photo featured here is of Jerry Seinfeld’s Porsche 917, one time driven by the coolest of the cool: Steve McQueen. Back in Steve’s day actors had to make up excuses to drive cool cars. Now they just buy them. Ed.)

“Playing Hooky”

Remember When? From the Archives of the Roadrunner Ramblings, by James Hume Roadrunner Region Historian

30yrs ago. Chris Christensen wrote about test driving a 928 from European Imports noting speed, comfort and handling. Porsche was not offering financing on the $38k ride. The Board approved a one-time $5 member assessment to purchase fire extinguishers and a first aid kit for DEs. Another sign of the inflationary late-70s was a rate increase for PCA membership dues

from $24 to $30 and notice that the PCA had approved limited use of its mailing list for advertising of automotive related products. A re-print from Competition Newsletter told of the Whittington brothers putting the nose of their Bolivian sponsored 935 across the line a lap ahead of the Dick Barbour/Paul Newman/Rolf Stommelen 935.

25 Years Ago President Jerry Landt wrote of a big RRR and Zone 9 turnout at the Fiesta del Porsche. The Corrales Roundup was reported to be a success with just one Karman-Ghia trying to sneak onto the Porsche only parking area. Bernie and Anne Butterfield were sponsoring a Porsches und Mehr gathering for the RRR at the International Café on

San Mateo. Don Hess wrote of a speedometer error he experienced at the Fiesta rally that’ll need to be corrected before Chuck & Linda Nelson’s End of Summer Splash Bash & Rallye.

20 Years AgoRRR President Mark reminded all to check brakes for wear and flush the brake lines as “it is highly probably your brakes will fail” on the RRR challenge in Ruidoso. Cal Hansen wrote of his drive up to the Michigan Parade and then on to Canada. Herb Hoover’s article offered good advice for renewing / replacing sealed beam headlights.

Pat Moyle’s $50 fix for cold start backfires could save your airbox. RRR Vice-president Drew Fuller explained with a graph why a 200 hp 911 running at sea level on a 50 degree day will only produce 172 hp on a 100 degree day in Roswell.

15 Years AgoGary Smith, John Armstrong and John Stever took their classes outshining the Coloradans. RRR President Randy Bartell notes that the RRR lost access to the APD training track (lawyers) but had hopes of getting a DE in 1995 at Kirtland AFB. Ramblings Editor Tom Leavitt reported that

the Corvette Club had begged out of the annual Porsche / Corvette challenge citing “plans to be out of town.” The Alpine Mountain Region called all Region 9 clubs to send their best to the 2-day DE at Pueblo Motorsport. Bet you wish you had: Gary Smith offered his rust-free running 1966 912 with Fuchs alloys for $3,850 and also a 1972 914 2.0 side shift, front cooler, upgraded torsion & sway bars, 180lb springs, Fuchs alloys, extra tires, 0 miles on rebuilt motor with a 12,000 mile warranty for $7,500.

10 Years Ago Tom & Myshelle will also host the RRR Annual Chili Cook-off. RRR President Neil Alessio pronounced the July RRR Swap Meet a success with a drive and picnic at Sandia Ski Basin for following day. Kim Harmon announced that RRR was soliciting for Driving Instructors to help the region move from parking

lot autocrossing to high speed DEs. Qualification included a controlled ego and the desire to teach others. Safety Chair Doug Brosveen outlined additional vehicle and driver requirements for very high speed (+80 mph) and all DEs. 70 year old Don Nickell wrote of returning to autocrossing after a 20 year lay-off.

5 Years Ago RRR President Russ Kelso reported on the successful return of the Elaine Gallegos Picnic with Bob McCabe’s brownies voted best in show. September’s Deutsche Marque III DE at Sandia Motor Speedway looked to be a good opportunity to get some cool weather track time. Bob Blackwell wrote of the drive up

to the Gmund West Panorama in Henderson, Colorado, with several RRR members entering the Concours. RRR’s own Gary Smith won the tractor race!

Parade is now in our near-past, although it’s hard to believe that it’s already come and gone. All the work done by Cathy, Walt and the whole RMR/AMR crew paid off so handsomely that I’m sure ev-eryone in the PCA will be talking about the Parade at Keystone for a very long time. And yet, for some of the people on the organizing committee, the work is not done yet. There are always “mop-up” issues to deal with. So, while the excitement is over, the work continues and we take our hats off to everyone still working on the success of our flagship event. Now it’s back to “normal” for everyone, or at least as normal as we ever get in the Porsche Club. I mean a summer of driving tours, autocrosses, DE’s, Club Racing and other events featuring the greatest cars and people in the whole world doesn’t really match up with what most people might call “normal.” But that’s why we do what we do, isn’t it? After all, who really wants to be normal! For me, I’m getting to spend a little time with my home Region, the Roadrunners. After a big travel tour in the spring through some our great Regions, I’ve been doing some auto-crossing on the lots and tracks around Albuquerque. August will finish up with the 38th Annual Corrales Round-up at Dave and Anne Stinchcomb’s house with all the Porsches parked under the big cottonwood trees of the Rio Grande bosque. If you’re in the area or feel like a drive, try to make it. It’s one of the longest traditions of the Roadrunner Region and just a nice way to spend a late summer afternoon

with lots of friendly Porsche enthusiasts. In the fall, I’ll be making my way up to Utah for a visit to the Intermountain Region for their Super DE and Club Race at Miller Motorsports Center on the full 4.5 mile course. I can’t wait to run my car there and to see the amazing facility. I’ve heard so much about it. It’ll also be my first time to that end of our Zone, so I’m looking forward to meeting our Intermountain members. But I have to admit that I’m also going to par-ticipate in one of my own very guilty pleasures while I’m up there. I’m taking the 964 out to the Bonneville Salt Flats for the USFRA’s World of Speed event. I don’t plan on breaking any records on this trip. I’ve just always wanted to drive a car on the Salt. Of course many of you know that I’ve ridden on a car to set a record there way back in the 80s during my ski racing days. If you’ve never been there, Bonneville is one of the great motor-racing Meccas on a par with Monaco, Indianapolis, Daytona, and Nurburgring. It’s scale is immense and the feats undertaken there are sometimes incomprehensible. Later in the fall, I’ll be making swings through the Southern end of the Zone and then back up to the Denver/Colorado springs area. So much to do, so many places to go, and so many great people to meet. I look forward to seeing you again soon.

When the Barrett House had a minor catas-trophe last month, Roadrunners were paying atten-tion. It turns out that an wayward driver fell asleep and plowed his vehicle into the Barrett thrift-store. The accident meant that the store had to close for a couple of weeks of repairs and shut down their only steady source of income. To the rescue came the

Roadrunner Region. Charities Chairs John and Phyllis Davis have done an outstanding job this year in raising money and sponsorship through the year. Pictured above are John Davis, Roadrunner Region Presi-dent Steven Stacy presenting a check for $1800 to Barrett House Director Dorothee Otero.
