    VOL. 5Sep 14-15, 2013ISSUE 37

    Twenty-fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time

In chapter 15 of Luke's Gospel, Jesus tells three parables about losing, finding, and rejoicing. The outcasts ofsociety, the taxpayers, and the sinners approach Jesus eager to hear what he has to say. In Luke's Gospel, hear-ng is a sign of conversion. The Pharisees and scribes, still suspicious of Jesus, complain about him associating

with sinners. So he tells them these three parables. In the first story, the parable of The Lost Sheep, the shepherd leaves behind the 99 sheep to search for the 1

ost sheep. When he finds it, the shepherd rejoices not alone as in Matthew's version, but with friends andneighbors. In the same way, God rejoices more over 1 sinner who repentslike the outcasts who have come tohear Jesusthan over the 99 righteous like the Pharisees and scribes.

The second story, about a poor woman who will not stop searching until she finds her lost coin, makes thesame point. Why are the Pharisees complaining? They should rejoice when the lost are found.

Finally we come to what is probably the most memorable parable in the Gospels, the story we know as TheProdigal Son. Just as in The Lost Sheep and The Lost Coin, this story (found only in Luke) is really about theseeker. The loving father is at the center of this parable. Even though his son runs off with his father's inheritanceand squanders the money, the father waits for him, hoping for his return. Upon his son's return, the father, full of

compassion, runs out to embrace and forgive him before the son can utter one word of repentance. At this pointhe rejoicing begins.

The parable does not end there. Rather, it makes one more point about the older son's reaction. This son whonever left, just like the Pharisees and scribes who feel they are righteous, refuses to enter his father's house to joinn the rejoicing. He has served his father. He has obeyed him. Perhaps it was not out of love. The father's responseeaches us that God's care and compassion extend to the righteous and sinner alike. When we are lost, God doesn't

wait for our return. He actively seeks us out. And when the lost are found, how could we not celebrate and re-oice?Retrieved from http://www.loyola.com/sundayconnection.

    Vision and mission

40 Days for Life is a focused pro-life campaign with a vision to access Gods power through prayer, fasting, and peaceful vigil to

    abortion.

The mission of the campaign is to bring together the body of Christ in a spirit of unity during a focused 40 day campaig

prayer, fasting, and peaceful activism, with the purpose of repentance, to seek Gods favor to turn hearts and minds from a cultur

death to a culture of life, thus bringing an end to abortion.

The 40 Days for Life campaign40 Days for Life is a community-based campaign that draws attention to the evil of abortion through the use of a three-point

    gram:

    Prayer and fasting

    Peaceful vigil

    Community outreach

40 Days for Life takes a determined, peaceful approach to showing local communities the consequences of abortion in their

neighborhoods, for their own friends and families. It puts into action a desire to cooperate with God in the carrying out of His p

for the end of abortion. The 40-day campaign tracks Biblical history, where God used 40-day periods to transform individuals, c

munities ... and the entire world. From Noah in the flood to Moses on the mountain to the disciples after Christ's resurrection,

clear that God sees the transformative value of His people accepting and meeting a 40-day challenge.

Based on the novel by Tim Tharp and directeJames Ponsoldt (who tackled another drinking them2012's "Smashed"), the film -- a familiar story of girl meets popular but flawed guy -- takes an indient stance toward a multitude of sins as it chartsromance between these attracted opposites.

Over the course of much angst, the audience wders whether she will redeem him before he haschance to corrupt her. High school has never seemecomplicated.

Sutter (Miles Teller) is the most popular senischool, with not a care in the world. He prefers to l- and party -- in the moment (the "now" which he "spectacular"), rather than accept any responsibili

The Order has expanded the Knights of Columbus Essay Contest to all Catholic students in public, private or parochschoolsin grades 8,9,10,11 and 12 during the current school year. The contest has also been expanded to go through tdifferent levels of competition to the international level.

The theme of the essay contest is The Importance of Religious Freedom. The contest opens the doors of young min

enabling the entrants to be creative, thoughtful and introspective in their work. The 2012 National winner received $300.

As Catholics we are called to participate in the political life of our country. This can be difficult at times because o

beliefs are often misunderstood and unpopular. Also, laws and regulations from our governments can be contrary

our beliefs and threaten to force us to violate our conscience. Discuss the challenges we face in this area, the impo

tance of religious freedom, and the idea of the Catholic in the public square.

All contestants on the local level are recognized for their participation in the contest. Participants are required to furnwritten parental consent. For entry forms and additional information contact: Timothy McCarthy at 706-831-1104.

The Knights of Columbus is an international Catholic family fraternal service organization with 1,843,587 million membe

in over 14,000 local councils. The 2012 contribution record includes donations of more than $167.5 million to charity and t

volunteering by members of more than 70 million hours of service.
