HEAD LICE
SEVERE HAY FEVER SEASON
HAY FEVER SEASON IS UPON US
Hay fever, also called allergic rhinitis, is common in
spring because it is often caused by an allergy to grass
pollen. Hay fever can occur at any time of the year as
an allergic reaction to dust mites, mould and animal fur
or hair. Symptoms include a running nose, sneezing
and itchy, watering eyes. Medication including
antihistamines can help symptoms. Allergen
immunotherapy may be a suitable treatment for
some people.
For those children who suffer re-occurring hay fever,
now might be a good time to look into administering a
24 hour antihistamine, giving some relief to these
students on high pollen days.
Head Lice just love warm weather? Why - because head lice
can reproduce more quickly in the warm weather; it actually
takes less time for the eggs to mature and the lice to molt.
This all adds up to more head lice!
If you find lice, do not worry or be embarrassed. Head lice
are a normal part of childhood - nearly 1 in 10 primary
school children could have head lice at any one time.
Most of us know what a hassle it is to treat head lice and
just how frustrating it can be when your child comes home
scratching their head yet again. But parents can fight the
spread of head lice by working together.
Check your family's hair for lice regularly - once a week is
ideal!
NUDE FOOD DAY WEDNESDAY’S
Every Wednesday for the remainder of this term we are
asking all Patto families to support Nude Food Day.
Nude Food Day is a nationwide initiative developed to encourage kids and parents to eat well and live well, and eliminate all unnecessary packaging and wrapping that goes into schools.
Choosing whole fresh food with little processing and packaging is good for the environment and is also the best choice for our health.
Patterson Lakes Primary School is committed to ensuring good health for our children and for our planet. We hope our “Nude Food Day Wednesdays” encourages a sustained healthy and environmentally friendly change to our children’s lunches and their future.

PLPS Leaders in Digital Technologies
1. Games & App Challenge Finalists
On Monday 7th November, the boys from “Operation Distraction’ went into the city to ACMI to pitch their game to
representatives from Microsoft, Unity, the Australian Children’s Television Foundation and the Department of Education.
They were one of three finalists in the Games and App Challenge in their age group, where the teams had to research a
real-world problem, design a game or app to address this problem and code a working prototype. The finals process
was to pitch their idea to industry leaders for it to become produced. In the morning and early afternoon they were
coached by Jon Yeo of Ted talks Melbourne and quizzed by the many teacher delegates at the Games and Apps
conference before moving into the large auditorium for the pitches from all the finalists and the announcements. It
was long day arriving at Carrum station by 7:30am and arriving home at 5:30pm.
They were amongst the other year level finalists from Years 6-10, who accepted the challenge and made it to the finals
as budding coders and digital innovators. The winning boy from Year 10 will have his game ‘Anxiety’ developed by
Unity into a full working game/app that will be available in the app store in the near future. The boys had a thrilling day.
PLPS entered two teams into this competition. The children gave up their free time to work at lunchtimes with Mrs
Bearup to learn text based coding languages using Touch Develop to produce their working prototype. They also had to
document every team meeting, design idea and coding knowledge using Office 365 and OneNote and a pitch video
advertisement as part of their submission.

2. Addressing the crowd and running workshops at the Kids Digital
Conference at Carrum Primary School
On Thursday 10th of the same week Mrs Bearup took 15 students from Year 6, Year 5 and 34Z to the Kids Digi Conference. These students had been working with Mrs Bearup and were asked to show and inspire other students about the fun projects in Digital Technologies they had been working on in class, lunchtime groups and during class time. Students from both Games and App challenge teams presented to all student delegates and their teachers and showed their games to this large audience (over 130 people). The Year 5’s ran a workshop in Kahootz 3D which was about how to make 360 degree virtual worlds and how to add a further dimension by building game play with several levels into a Hide and Seek type platform. Year 34Z students challenged students to think about robotics and the basics of coding as an introduction to the possibilities of the future with robotics that they could explore back in our own schools. They involved students thinking about robot vacuum cleaners, coding syntax and later in hands on activities with BeeBots and NXT robots.
The students did a fabulous job in running their workshops and presenting to large groups. They conducted themselves like real professionals.
The Year 3 Portsea Camp
There was an atmosphere of excitement and anticipation when the Year 3 students and their
families arrived at school in preparation for their first official camp to Portsea. Some children
were exuding energy, some were understandably a little nervous because it was their first time
away from home and some just could not wait to get there!
On arrival, the students were informed of their sleeping arrangements and activity groups before
meeting with the camp staff. The students got to rotate through a variety of activities over the
two-day camp. They included snorkelling, swimming, rock pool rambling, the Portsea explorer,
fishing from the Portsea Pier and beach activities.
Many of the activities were first-time experiences for the children. It was obvious by the energy
levels and the smiles on their faces how much enjoyment everyone had.
Every student was taken out of their comfort zone at various times throughout the camp and
each student accepted the challenges placed before them and passed with flying colours. The
amount of resilience, support, encouragement, friendship, courage and empathy exhibited was
pleasing to witness.
In the evening the students got to bust out some moves at the disco. Prizes were awarded to
the best dancers and it was really entertaining to see everyone having fun and enjoying
themselves. There was lots of talent on show from the boys and the girls and even some of the
teachers and parents!
Both days were action-packed which made the time go very fast. Students were constantly on
the go and were exposed to a number of unique experiences such as witnessing the super
moon and watching a variety of cargo ships and ocean liners entering and exiting Port Phillip
Bay.
The school is very reliant on receiving extra assistance from parents and without their help going
on school camp would not be possible. On behalf of the year 3 staff, we would like to
acknowledge and sincerely thank the parents, Steve Lewis, Travis Over, Afonso Lai and Andrew
Pring who graciously volunteered their time to assist on the camp.
The feedback received from the students has been overwhelmingly positive. It is fantastic to see
the amount of personal growth the children have shown since the experience. Friendships have
strengthened, confidence and self-belief has increased and many students have learned to
become independent problem solvers. The staff are very proud of the students for showing a
number of characteristics that will benefit them now and in the future.
Congratulations on a hugely successful adventure. Well done!

WORKING BEE – SUNDAY, 27TH NOVEMBER
16th November, 2016
Dear Parents/Carers
The date set for our school’s final working bee this year is for Sunday, 27th November.
We are looking forward to having as many families involved as possible to help with a tidy up of the school prior to our school Christmas concert on the 7th December.
The working bee will commence at 10:30am and conclude with a sausage sizzle at 12:30pm. The school will provide sausages, soft drinks and water at no cost to helpers. We will be meeting at the undercover area outside the Staff & Science Rooms.
The Facilities and Grounds committee have identified a number of items that need attention around the school that we are hoping to achieve. These include:
Weeding around edges of paths and buildings.
Trimming back of trees hanging over paths & seating areas.
Clearing of garden beds.
Clearing of drains.
Redistribution of softfall mulch in playgrounds.
Sweeping dust & cobwebs from portable classroom walls & walkways.
Washing some walls of portable classrooms & steps where needed.
To complete the tasks we are hoping that families may be able to supply some tools, i.e. pruning shears, bow saws, secateurs, yard brooms, rakes, spades/shovels, wheelbarrows.
If you are able to assist with the working bee, even for a small amount of time, could you please indicate on the return slip below or email me at [email protected] by Thursday, 24th November.
Regards,
Paul Clohesy
Assistant Principal (on behalf of the Facilities & Grounds Committee)
