Vitamin B12

B12 is the largest, most structurally complex vitamin.

It contains the biochemically rare element cobalt.

It’s involved in the metabolism of every cell in the body, esp. DNA synthesis & regulation, fatty

acid & amino acid metabolism, energy production, blood formation, and formation of myelin which acts as insulation for nerve cells.

B12 cannot be produced by any known plant, animal, or fungi.

Only bacteria and Achaea have the necessary enzymes to make it.

Therefore, all food sources rich in B12 ultimately derive it from them.

Only animal products contain B12 in a proven biologically-useful form.

Deficiency is very common among the general population (1 in 4 per Framingham study), with over half the population having

suboptimal blood levels. An even higher percentage of vegetarians are deficient. Deficiency also increases with age and/or digestive issues.

Generally, if one’s stomach isn’t producing sufficient HCL, it won’t be producing sufficient intrinsic factor either.

Both, in addition to the pancreas, and small intestine, are needed for proper B12 absorption. Numerous other

medications also interfere with B12 absorption.
